Hadn’t played guitar since I was teen in the late 90s. Bought a guitar during this whole pandemic and I’m kinda lost as to how much things have moved on. This helps a lot.

Another reason for going without the amps is that it really helps control the stage volume. Volume wars on stage are a nightmare.

Really there’s no volume control on a amp simulator? As long as there are guitar players, there will be volume wars.

@@shanemcconnell1736 The sound guy can easily turn down the gain on the board and counteract anything that a guitar player does with his amp sim. A Marshall stack blowing everything off the stage? Not so much.

@@Riffman42 80s I played in big bands with roadies and light man and sound man always at least a four-man crew, lots of monitors, now I plan bands with no sound man so nobody’s adjusting anything but me on stage and I use a 15 and a 20 amp together, it’s loud, but it’s not that loud, it doesn’t push air, besides, even if we had a sound man, I would never completely trust anybody with all my sound in the room, but that’s just me, I know it was just me because I became a musician, but have to show for me when I was a kid was staring at the gear, when I see those gigs were all the gear is hidden and there’s nothing on stage. I’m waiting for Frank Sinatra to walk out.

It’s interesting that so many people are so opinionated against using modelers and a straight recording setup.
I for one embrace all the new tech available. As a young player with a low budget, it sucked having to scrimp and save to buy a half decent amp setup and be limited to whatever tone you could get from that and your collection of pedals. Then lugging all that gear to practice or gigs. And if you ever wanted to record it required a whole other subset of gear that was also very costly for the average consumer back then.
In the amp days, your budget decided a lot in your progress as a musician. With all the free tools, learning and equipment out today people can learn and develop their sound without being restricted by whether they could afford a huge collection of gear or not.

Paul Landers of Rammstein played two of the largest venues in the world (Olympic Stadiums of Berlin and Moscow) last summer with just his signature Sansamp fly rig going straight into the board. Interestingly according to Tech21 his PL1 model is really popular with country players for its crisp clean sounds.

I went into a recording studio last December, and ran one lead into my Mesa Boogie, and another lead into a Line 6 pod, which then ran two leads out of that, so it was like recording three guitars at once! It sounded amazing!

I use a Mooer Preamp Live with a Line 6 HX FX into a FRFR Speaker (Harley Benton 1x12). The sounds are awesome, I can get all the classic super expensive, Marshall Plexi chewy sounds, plus I can really sculpture a sound and know that what I get out of the headphones is what comes out of the speaker.
The Harley Benton speaker even has it's own inbuilt IRs so I don't need the Mooer Preamp, and can just use the HXFX straight in.
I used this rig yesterday in a gig and was super pleased.
With the Mooer Preanp Live , it is basically a little Kemper so I can even tone capture and download preamps.
Everyone should have a digital rig.
Modern technology is great. It isn't 2010 anymore, so embrace it, though to be fair, I was quite happy with the Beringher VAMP2 for ages and before then too and got some killer tones out of this rig, longbefore digital modelling was popular.
The Vamp2 even now sounds pretty decent through the FRFR speaker.
What I learned over the years is it doesn't take much to get a good sound.

Tank-G with my own selections of amp models and IRs... one guitar... and then straight into the mixer and PA. I've gigged this system and it works just fine; when there's no mixer/PA I go into the aux input of my Orange combo so I'm just using the nice clean PA stage of my combo. It helps that the Tank-G has 9 banks of presets - I have 3 guitars I use regularly and I assign 2 banks to each guitar and have a few for experimentation; works perfectly - and when I can't be bothered... that's why I bought an Orange combo....

I ran a pedalboard with a crate power block 150 watt solid state (very small) head, a vox stomplab g2, wireless receiver and pedal power. Then ran to my orange 2x12, marshall 4x12, or if it was a nice venue straight into the pa. Did a lot of regional and national runs with that rig and I'm glad this topic is being brought up. Turned a lotta heads with that setup. Nothing special but great budget tone that lasted years and made tight backlines and fast change overs much easier. Also YOUR DRUMMER DOESN'T WANNA HELP YOU CARRY BOTH OF YOUR 4X12s.

I've been using the Strymon Big Sky HW with speaker simulate and then post processing as needed with various amp sims in my DAW, seems to work well most of the time - but sometimes only an amp has the secret sauce (at least for now). REALLY looking forward to Strymon coming out with a more sophisticated Amp sim than the Iridium, maybe with larger Big Sky enclosure - the Iridium has many good settings but I do think there is still room for realism improvement.

I was thinking the same thing. If you're using a power amp pedal you might as well just use an amp. I would think it would add more unwanted sound and would in turn you'd have to get a noise gate on there as well to counter act the power amp pedal.

I have had a Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 for awhile now. Nice piece of kit and it's analog. I pair it with a Tech 21 Power Engine 60 for practice, but I can go direct to board with it...or use the PE as a monitor along with direct. I just recently got a Mooer 005 micro amp pedal along with their Baby Bomb 30 micro power amp. I run the 005 into the PE60, but the Baby Bomb allows me to go into an old-school cabinet if I want. That 005 pedal sounds amazing. That said...you still need effects pedals, connector cables, power supplies, and that PE60 is heavy and I don't want to carry it anymore LOL.
So I'm looking to get at the very least a Headrush FRFR-108, but I want to get the new Line 6 POD Go for the ultimate in versatility and portability.

I ended up grabbing my digitech rp pedal, turned on the amp and cab simulators, plugged it into the p.a. and finished the gig. It actually sounded pretty good out of their massive system! Why would you need a "Power amp" if you were running straight to FOH? you'd be sending them a powered signal and you could blow up their board... I think the "Lingo" for this digital revolution is causing some communication issues. So, a preamp and a power amp is called an amp head. Is he talking about a power amp Sim? If so, that is not a necessary component.

The next step in these days will be gigs without even stages and audiences and in 10 years guitar solos without guitars.

It's a shame you're such an asshole! I own a professional recording studio with a large tracking room, a locker of premium mics and an assortment of quality presentations and outboard gear. When these plugins and modelers start delivering the same results I'll start using them. As for actual professional musicians! They have learned to settle for convenience.
