I am a Sri Lankan burgher now living in Australia after immigrating in 1961 with my parents and fellow family members, In 1961 with the prospect of anticipated discrimination foreshadowing poor job prospects for us my parents made the bold decision and got accepted to Australia,We were able to by working hard and long hours and many sacrifices enjoy a great future that sadly would not have been available in our own motherland Sri Lanka,Still love my motherland and sad for the Burghers still there facing hardships in their own country that I have spoken to many while travelling in Sri Lanka ,The contribution they made to Sri Lanka goes unrecognised even now,,😢😢😮❤

My mom said burghers are 'Carapothu Lansi" but inside her heart she loved them. Aunty Daffny never let me down my bad English. She taught me. Corrected me. They are the real assert we had. But unfortunately no one recognized them in our society. They never asked for a separate land. They shared the same hardships as majority Sinhalese people. But we all loved them so much. That means we all mixed up so much. Now is is very hard to fined unmixed burghers in our society. They were absorbed like to a sponge by the majority Sinhalese population.

It is a fact that individuals with Dutch heritage in Sri Lanka are referred to as Burghers, whereas those with British heritage are commonly referred to as Eurasians. In India, individuals with British heritage are commonly referred to as Anglo-Indians.🤔😏

Though "Burgher" is a Dutch word for a citizen, in Sri Lanka we don't differentiate between those of part Dutch or Portuguese descent. So the collective term Burgher is used for all.
