Max Champion, Lewis (still) brilliant - by Peter Windsor

  • It looked, for a while, that the finale would pan out into some sort of orderly, even predictable, ending: Lewis had been in charge of the race since the start. But then that 2021 X-factor settled upon the Yas Marina Circuit - a Safety Car with but five laps to run. Mercedes kept Lewis out on track; Max stopped for a fresh set of Pirelli softs. Given the accident mess - Nicholas Latifi's Williams had hit the wall - and the five lapped cars sitting between Lewis and Max - Lewis's win seemed assured. Then Michael Masi, the Race Director, obviously under pressure to ensure that this race (and championship) did not end behind a Safety Car, seemed to change the goal posts. First, he told the drivers of the five lapped cars that they needed to stay behind Lewis (and in front of Max). Although this is contrary to the regs, it is probably in the power of the Race Director to make this call. Either way, it still looked good for Lewis. Then, a few minutes later, realising that the accident debris had been cleared faster that at first thought, Masi made another call - this time for the five cars to unlap themselves. Crucially, though, Masi did not then instruct the other three lapped drivers in the race - Daniel Ricciardo, Lance Stroll and Mick Schumacher - to do likewise, thus creating confusion up and down the pit lane. Out on the track, with one lap remaining, Lewis, on his old, hard Pirellis, was a sitting duck. Max won that last-lap sprint to the flag with consummate ease.
Because of these Safety Car inconsistencies, however, Mercedes at the time of video posting have issued a formal notice of protest. Given that this race was a championship decider, it's very unlikely that any verdict will affect the outcome. It means, though, that the 2021 World Championship - a 22-race marathon - has ended on a note of confusion and argument. Which, of course, is probably an appropriate summation of the feel of the year as a whole.
In this video Peter Windsor looks back at the race - at the first phase, led by Lewis Hamilton; at the Safety Car drama; and at Max Verstappen's championship win.

It was Mercedes team decision fault. Max was going on about his tires for ALOng time and the refused to put him. Even with his pace he still could have won if they pitted him during the first vsc. You can’t get mad for a safety car restart with the lapped cars passing. That’s normal. Mercedes team seems just too sterile an operation to gather much sympathy, and after seven championships many people were just cheering for the challenger. But it's been demonstrated again and again that Hamilton is not only the more complete driver, he's also as fair a driver as there has ever been at this level, and he's using the platform he has won for purposes more noble than himself. Max was gifted the championship in the end. He didn't deserve to win it this way. He's deserving of a championship, but NOT like this. NOT in a fabricated manner by Masi. F1 has lost ALL credibility...especially if they judge correctly that the regulations and rules were breached by the stewards....if (when) they likely rule that the result can't be changed. It's a shame really. Such a great and epic season concluded in such a shambolic way. How on earth could Mercedes have calculated that the rules would be broken by the stewards to allow Max to gain such a distinct advantage and be all but handed the title? Mercedes and Lewis dominated the last 4 grand prix...including Abu Dhabi. Max was holding on for dear life to get his title. Mercedes got absolutely screwed. This will go down as the single most contentious and unfair result in F1 history...and quite possibly all of sport. I guess we now know that rules and regs are subjective. Next year will be absolute chaos since no one can expect the rules to actually be applied. Remove Masi with immediate effect and never under any circumstance let him manage professional motorsport ever again.

The rules are meaningless. Max is NOT the champ. We have NO champ for 2021 IMO. I'm actually sad for Max. He didn't deserve to have his first championship under such circumstances. 1. Peter, your words aptly summarize just how unfair this Masi-influenced race was: “I’m down because it wasn’t a straight fight, in my view…. It’s kind of odd when the guy that has dominated the race, made a great start on the dirty side of the grid on hard [sic] tires, loses it on the last lap not because he has made any mistakes at all.”
    2. Interesting observation that Mercedes didn’t lose this championship on the last lap of this race. If they look deep within, you said, they’ll realize they lost it because Red Bull gave Max a better car than Lewis’s Mercedes for the first half of the year, so Merc have themselves to blame. Well, Peter, turn that statement around! It only points to how incredibly well Lewis drove over the entire season as a whole, and why he didn’t deserve to lose the championship because Masi chose to intervene and hand it to Verstappen on a silver platter.
    3. On the issue of relative popularity, you noted again quite perceptively: “Max Verstappen seems to be a much more ‘popular’ driver now than Lewis Hamilton, and Red Bull seem to be a lot more ‘popular’ than Mercedes…. I mean, you don’t hear Max getting booed very much. You hear Lewis getting booed a lot. Why is that? I have absolutely no idea. I don’t see anything in Lewis that deserves a boo at all.”
Peter, for those of us who are black and live with this kind of thing continually, there is very little mystery in it. I rarely ever complain about racism. Indeed, I've been labeled “an apologist for imperialism” by other black people who feel that I go too far in defending white culture. That said, I need to be frank and say I've seen and felt raw blatant racism up close and personal both in my native Africa and in the 40 years I've spent in the United States-at Harvard, at Yale, at Johns Hopkins, at the Aspen Institute. How many times has Lewis not driven spectacularly well, better even than Max, only for Max to be voted “Driver of the Day” given the sheer number of his fans, many of whom seem to be convinced with Pentecostal certainty that they have found their Great White Hope? Lewis might be a Brit, but that is not what many people see first.
Even Sergio Pérez (!) received twice as many votes for “Driver of the Day” as Hamilton did today. Seriously, guys? Perez, true, is similarly a person of color-but crucially-he doesn't drive for the team that sinned in hiring the black guy. That’s the difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if many who voted for him did so in large part because of the extremely aggressive methods he used to take 8 seconds out of Lewis’s progress in a single lap.
Besides the normal pressure of competition, Hamilton has to cope with a great deal of pressure many don’t see-not only from those who oppose the social causes he stands for, but also from those uncomfortable with the image of a black Formula 1 champion. The symbolism of the white-versus-black parallel that Christian Horner recently drew between Verstappen and the Irish heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, who famously defeated the African-American boxer Deontay Wilder in October, was not lost on any of us.
All of which gives me even deeper respect for Lewis’s greatness as a driver. He didn’t deserve to lose the 2021 championship in this way.

    • @JamesJozef
      @JamesJozef 2 роки тому +2

Firstly, the term “great white hope” is usually reserved for instances or sports that are historically black dominated. F1 is very much the opposite, so to even begin to put that label on the situation at hand is ridiculous.
To assign this racial narrative to what we’ve witnessed this season does a great disservice to the sport. Lewis is a generational talent. Like all generational talents, he has detractors. People hate Lebron, people hated MJ. Schumacher experienced similar fan backlash throughout his career, yet he was not a visible minority. 99% of the hate Lewis receives is born out of jealousy, not any sort of racial bias.
The FIAs policing of driving standards over the season has been extremely inconsistent and problematic, but to insist there was some racially or politically driven plot against Lewis is ludicrous.
Congratulations to Max and Lewis both. I look forward to watching the rivalry unfold further. It’s nothing but positive for the sport as a whole to see Lewis challenged like this after so many years.

Honestly, i don't think it would make a lot of difference when it comes to popularity if Hamilton would be white.
I personally don't have direct preferences for Verstappen nor Hamilton. But if you would ask me, it would tell you that i think Hamilton has hardly any personality and is simply boring to watch racing. Although the racing part isn't completly his own fault. But it's simply not very entertaining if you know that all Hamilton has to do to overtake 95% of the field is drive within 1 second of an opponent and then simply press the DRS button on the next straight and the superior topspeed of the Merc will do the job. Sorry, but theres simply no racecraft behind that.
Verstappen simply looks better in this regard because with the RedBull overtaking opponents isn't that simple especially once with a Merc PU in the back.
Also when Hamiltons radio is broadcasted on the TV, in most cases we hear him complaining about something. Tyres are crap, Safety car is to slow, to much water on the track, tyres are cold, why we use this tyre compound and not the other, why don't we do the same strategy as..., they are to fast i can't follow...yeah no shit sherlock. As if everybody in your own team wouldn't have noticed that already...
I would say Hamiltons main problem when it comes to popularity is that he gives the impression on TV of a personalityless snowflake.

Mercedes “lost” support much like Ferrari did during its dominance. RB have been a popular underdog as the only team who took it to Mercedes over this period. Don’t underestimate the non-English F1 followers who have grown tired of the constant Hamilton worship in the UK based (dominant) F1 press. At times it feels like the other 19 drivers are forgotten. I believe there is some push back and demand for more balance in the general coverage. Having a non-English F1 WDC will hopefully restore this.

Peter, we all need to acknowledge that F1 has a serious problem that needs to be corrected post haste. How can we have regulations that are cherry picked how and when they’ll be applied all in the name of “creating a good show”? How can we trust in a steward system that should be impartial but clearly isn’t? I think those who have been watching all season clearly see that had Lewis pitted and Max was the one who stayed out, it’s guaranteed the race would have ended behind the safety car. Simply because what we now have is what they have been trying to manufacture all season.
F1 will continue to loose true, diehard fans if this kind of thing continues to happen. This is not a Red Bull nor a Mercedes issue… it’s a F1 problem.

There is a big part missing from the comments so far - when does the race director get to decide who of the drivers can race and who can not. By only clearing the cars between Lewis and Max, the race director stopped any challenge from other drivers for the race win! Could have Carlos or one of the other drivers challenged Max and Lewis for the race win if they were directly behind Max? But they were not given the chance by the decision that was made. by the race director. This is a big wrong - Max and Lewis are not the only drivers or teams in the race so it has to be the same rules for everyone no matter who they are. If the same rules were applied, then all the lap cars would have to be cleared or none of the laps cars! If this is the case - the results would have been different - fair for one, fair for all.

F1 is on my mind. The blatant teifing just witnessed this morning has all fans of the sport shaking their heads. Lewis Hamilton n Max Verstappen had a great n competitive race. Lewis made a fantastic start n led the race from the start until the first incident where Max typically drove Lewis off the track forcing Lewis to rejoin across the run off with Max crying that the lead should be handed to him. The stewards later told RB n Max he never had the lead n all Max had done was typically force Lewis off the track n the race proceeded with both Max n Lewis changing tyres n Lewis building a lead up to over 12 seconds until Perez slowed Lewis to try n give Max a shot. Lewis eventually passed him but lost time to RB bringing Max closer but the Lewis gradually moved away again to gain an almost 5.5sec lead with most fans n the commentators giving the race n Championship to Lewis as there were only approx 3 laps left. The only two incidents that could change anything was a convenient crash n a safety car leading to a full stop of the race. At this point in the race Lewis had caught n lapped 4 cars at this point n had built up a big lead. Bearing mind Lewis's tyres had done close to 26 laps at this time. Somehow in the session stop Max was allowed throw new reds( The fastest tyre)n the four cars plus the approx 5.5 second lead were taken away from Lewis because the race director saw fit that somehow as he said to Mercedes "It's called motor racing". So here's what happened in fact:
1)Lewis Hamilton's graft for 55 of a race meant to run 58 laps incl his 5.5second lead was taken away.
2)He was heavily disadvantaged in that he had tyres 26 plus laps old.
    3) He had caught, passed n lapped 4 cars in order to maintain his lead.
    4) He had only 3 laps left to run to become World Champion again for an record 8th time.
    5) Max on the other hand did not have to pass anyone as the cars Lewis had to pass were conveniently instructed out of the way by the race director n stewards.
    6) Max was therefore given a huge advantage with no distance to make up as he was virtually placed very very close to Lewis.
    7) Max had brand new reds tyres on the fastest for sprints.
It was a simple thing to pass Lewis with this one sided situation created by the race director n the stewards making a mockery of the race, the sport n anything that you could call decency. To his future loss, Max Verstappen n Red Bull demonstrated that they have no decency or sport in them n took advantage of this "position". Had Max had any he would have made sure he simply finished the race in second place acknowledging the blatant barefaced teifing that was instigated by the race director, stewards n maybe Red Bull n dare I say Latifi. The soft crash was very conveniently timed. My hunch is a huge case of collusion n fixing of the race. I've never seen the stewards n race director break a sport. Mercedes n Totto Wolfe need to look at all of this again in detail. The race director n stewards put a big dent in formula1 this morning. The Race Director n the Stewards Stink. F1 right now stinks. This was orchestrated, Lewis Hamilton did no wrong n had virtually won the race. If the race was stopped they would have had to declare him the winner. How Verstappen can sit with himself n say he won is beyond me. He clearly knows he didn't. Red Bull had a hand in this. It stinks of the 3 "Win At Any Cost"Stooges, Verstappen Snr, Marko n Horner working with Masi the race director n the race marshalls. Collusion of the highest order. Well raced Lewis your the Man!

I think both Horner and Marko have brought the sport in to disrepute with their comments and accusations of cheating - which they have never acted on. Just this weekend, Max was publicly saying that if he was driving the Merc, he would have won the championship by now, that Lewis is scared of his tactics etc. I don’t recall Nigel, Damon, Ayrton, Alain, Michael etc every declaring such arrogant swagger. I am unsure whether they really should overturn the result, unsure whether Mercedes should pursue this in the court. Lewis was in the better car on the day and should have won, would have won. spot on - Race Director manufactured a situation to have the top two race to the line for the sake of TV appearances. Once they'd said 'no unlapping permitted' they could have brought the SC in in time to have a race, but without the manufactured advantage to Max. Lewis had earned a lead fair and square; RB put Max behind the lapped cars by choosing to pit for softs (a fair gamble, they had nothing to lose) but for the RD then to deliberately move the road-blocks out of the way rewarded the gamble directly rather than letting it play out. The only fair finish would have been to let them race with the backmarkers between them; or to have followed the 'unlapping' rule properly to make all of the lapped cars go by. The RD didn't do that as it would have taken too long, into the final lap and the SC would have been out at the finish. Far better would have been to Red Flag the race instead of the SC, tyre changes either for anyone or no-one while stationary - then race the final 5 or 6 laps or whatever it was from a rolling start.
A great season, a great race - a bureaucratic finish that leaves a bad taste.

In 30 years of being a devout F1 fan, watching every race I could live, I have to say today is one of the, if not THE, biggest load of rubbish I've ever seen.
How can Michael Masi directly interfere in the race like that, making up the rules as he goes which gives all the advantage to Max who was 12 or so seconds behind Lewis at the time of the incident that brought out the safety car? If you are going to directly interfere like that, you have got to consider the situation both drivers are in. It is completely unfair otherwise.
Now, if the rules were followed and there was a lap or so left to run once all safety car restart procedures (I.e. all lapped cars having joined the back of the pack) had been completed, then it would be pretty much fair game. But they were not followed here, Masi made up his own rules and effectively handed the championship to Max on a silver platter.
Now, apparently there's a rule somewhere that allows the Race Director to interfere with the safety car How he sees fit. So based on that, Masi has effectively decided to hand all the advantage to Max, rather than ensure everyone is on equal terms tyre wise. You simply cannot engineer a race result like that, which is what he pretty much did, it must have been obvious that Lewis was a sitting duck. It really does stink this of corruption.
In the "Winner takes all" race, as it was heavily promoted as, Lewis dominated it and was the deserved winner, only to have Masi directly interfere to a point where it was extremely unsporting.
I thought Masi, like all of us, wanted a fair race. Instead because of him we got the complete opposite. I thought the race at Jeddah was a farce, this was a complete sham, and Michael Massi is an utter disgrace.

Another great summing up from Peter.
Never been a fan of any particular driver or team, have just loved watching F1 since the 70's. Both drivers have shown how incredibly talented they are throughout the season and either one deserved to win the Championship, Today, nothing against Max and RB but Lewis outpaced Max throughout the race, not withstanding the early incident, and with out the safety car would have presumabely wonbarring any mechanical issues, although Max was catching there was to much of a gap to catch and pass before the flag.
However I dont think the decisions made yesterday have done the sport any favours. The end seemed a blatently manufactured result. I also feel that if the position of the drivers had been reversed it would have finished under the safety car still giving Max the win. Now whether this was done for commercial or other reasons we'll never know or ever find out. Conversely if it had been Lewis that had been given this decision RB would also now be going through the appeals process.
As to repercutions not sure, If Massi goes or not is down to the ruling authorities in the FIA. However a shake up seems to be warranted whether that means the same stewards at every race to promote consistancy then so be it. Depending how all this goes I could also see the potential posibility of Mercedes taking the ultimate desision and just walking away from the sport, hopefully that will not be the case.

There is something that happens to a fan base to hate someone that dominants a sport. I can remember reading and seeing in person the hatred towards Lance Armstrong, prior to all the doping scandal being understood -- and let's be honest, most of the top riders were doping at the same time Armstrong dominated the Tour d' France (TdF). At the 2004 TdF, Alpe D'Huez ITT stage race, Armstrong was on his 6th TdF title run. Police and other officials warned Armstrong of death threats prior to the stage race. During the stage race people were spitting on him as he rode up the mountain. Imagine 600,000 people on the side of the mountain road with no fencing or barriers to keep the riders safe -- what a brave ride. I think Armstrong's dominance in the sport and hatred in the cycling fan base, contributed to the UCI's ability to retrospectively negate Armstrong's 7 TdF titles. The UCI's retrospective negation of Armstrong's TdF titles is an important point, because even though many other TdF title winners later admitted to doping during their TdF race, the UCI took no action to negate those TdF title winners. To me it is similar to the reason the FIA were able to allow such a bad ruling in the final 2021 F1 title race to stand, and retrospectively they effectively negated Hamilton's 8th title win. It was easier for the FIA to allow a bad call towards Hamiton than upset Verstappen's fan base. It would be interesting to have a social science professional write about this phenomenon of dislike or hatred towards domination in sport which could allow for bad rulings to stand.

I felt quite accepting of the result at the end of the race and text a few Dutch friends my ‘congratulations’ but the longer I think the worse it sits with me. For Mr. Masi to break safety car protocol to effectively allow for a TV finish is absurd. It would have been fine had he let the lapped cars overtake earlier and one would simply have to say ‘that’s racing’. However, to let past some lapped cars and not others resulting in Max not having a driver behind him at the restart that could give him any trouble feels very wrong. I can totally understand why this will drag on legally but ultimately F1 has to clean its act up. These new, exciting and aggressive young drivers will need a strong stewards room for the future otherwise F1 will become more about drama and less about the sport that I love.

    • @cpf6125
      @cpf6125 2 роки тому +3

Masi was effectively rectifying his own mistake. I think people are focusing on the wrong part and missing the real controversy. What really messed things up was the original call that "lapped calls shall NOT be allowed to overtake" which was truly bizarre. It broke all precedent. We've never seen that happen before and it makes no sense as Latifi's car had already been removed from the track. Then two long, slow laps passed by in that situation and Masi was left with the choice between letting it finish behind a safety car (or restarting with the lapped cars still in place) and being accused of breaking all safety car precedent and blatantly favouring Mercedes - which would imo have looked even worse than what actually happened - or doing what he did and letting just the first five unlap themselves BARELY leaving enough time for a single lap of racing.
I completely agree that it was (another) embarrassing incident from Masi/the FIA but it was one of their own making and I feel like a lot of the anger and controversy is directed at the wrong aspect of it. Had it had been correctly handled we would have ended up with two or three laps of racing with all the lapped cars at the back of the pack and Verstappen would almost certainly have still overtaken Hamilton. What really decided the race was the Merc/Red Bull pitstop decisions gambling on whether there would be a safety car or not. Of course it's horrible luck for Mercedes but it's just as much a part of racing as an unexpected puncture or a yellow flag ruining your quali lap. The final result that we got - one lap of racing with just five of the lapped cars unlapping themselves - was at that point the lesser of two evils and was as close as possible to what "should" have happened after the initial fuck up had been made.

@@cpf6125 I mostly agree with you. The track took a while to clear so I understand the uncomfortable delay in allowing lapped cars to pass. Had it all happened sooner the F1 community would have simply had to say ‘racing is a crazy sport!’. My real objection is that I feel the decisions made were outside of the remit of the race directors responsibilities. I’m sure he would argue differently. My understanding is that the race directors job is to ensure the safety of all on and around the track and to implement procedures as set out in the FIA regulations. In those closings laps these seemed not to be the reasons for the decisions. It is hard for us to say for sure but the lapped cars initially not being let through might (I’m playing devils advocate here) have been justified by something that is part of the race directors responsibility (safety) but the later decision to let some cars through and to pull in the safety car earlier broke two sets of protocol and was done for reasons such as ‘we need to finish the season on track for TV purposes’ etc. Sadly I see no other way to explain the decision making and that is a motivation that is, as far as I understand things, not within the race directors remit.
Whichever way one looks at it in terms of who deserved to win this championship the reality is that the race director has basically (through difficult circumstances) been given the undesirable responsibility to decide who the champion driver will be for the season, depending on which choices he makes. I hope F1 can find regulatory solutions to fix something like this for the future so decisions are made on track and not left to the whims of an individual in race control.

I am concerned about how Max's father found his way into your video. That's very disappointing and unfortunately reflects your year long struggle to manage an ingrained bias. PS: Lewis often gets booed, not because he isn't loved and respected by all F1 fans, but frequently because of the obvious bias of the British Media. The rest of the world, gets urked by your inability to be truly unbiased. It is a global sport and it's future doesn't revolve around the UK.
Also, you are perfectly aware that Horner's comments were taken out of context. That you would repeat it is sad too. Again I understand the emotions and I empathize.
I would agree that the FIA cocked this race up royally (no offense to the British monarchy). Guess what? They also cocked up a series of races including the Saudi Arabia race which Lewis won. Was there heartbreak then... Nope, it was glossed over. Why ... because secretly the British Media want Lewis to win, while maintaining the veil of neutrality.
    That said:
    1. Congrats to Max and Lewis on an absolutely brilliant season. They were both deserving of the championship before the race and that shouldn't change after the race. It's not Max or Horner's fault that the Admin tripped over themselves.

Peter, thanks for your mostly objective analyses throughout this amazing F1 season! As Max fan i’m deligthed that Max secured his maiden F1 championship. I also feel for Lewis who deserved the win in Abu Dhabi, but he was unfortunate with the safety car. However, when you summarize the whole season i think Max delivered every single race. The first half of the season Lewis made more mistakes (Imola, Monaco and Baku) and there was Silverstone where Mercedes could repair Lewis his car under the red flag after his major shunt with Max. It felt unfair that he’d go out and win that race after the judgement of the stewards that Lewis was the most to blame. The “orange army” didn’t forget that one, and the celebrations after the race when Max was in hospital for medical checks. That’s where the boo’s come from, but that has to stop. Lewis is a legend. Max and Lewis need each other, and i’m looking forward to more wheel to wheel racing. Would be nice when other teams can be in the mix as well!

@@donsolis12Lewis and Max have proven that they drove this season in a league of their own. I believe that both drivers make their cars look better than they really are. In quali Max beat Lewis, but as a F1 follower you must know that doesn't always mean that's the same story in race pace. Red Bull had less downforce on the car to cover the straight line speed of Mercedes. That comprommised their race pace because the tyres went off quicker then Mercedes. We agree that Max is a young boy, but none of that can be said about his driving which is very manly. Max is currently the only driver on the grid that can put on a fight against Lewis, and attack where he doesn't expect it. For the sport it's a blessing in the sky, because otherwise it would have been another dull season. Without Max Lewis would have won the championship easily and vice versa. How they really compare to each other? You can only tell for sure when they are in the same car. But that's not gonna happen. All the credits to Lewis who should have wone the race last Sunday. He must be gutted how it all went. But i stand with my opinion that Max is a deserved champion when you take the whole season in consideration. Like Hamilton said in Baku: "remember it's a marathon, guys". And a few moments later Lewis completly missed the first corner after the re-start because he accidently touched the wrong button on his steering wheel. Looking back that mistake cost him the 8th championship. A missed (or robbed) victory in Abu Dhabi would have been water under the bridge...

The difference between the cars was a lot bigger than the results suggest. The reason it was as close it was because of Max. It was so obvious when Lewis could overhaul those cars in Brazil with apparent ease and still win.

Lol. And yet Hamilton wasn't even in the top three in any speed trap at Brazil, while Gasly topped two of the speed traps with his own Honda. Verstappen was slowest in two of the traps, but he was .3 seconds faster than Hamilton nearly every lap through the sector 2 infield. Bottom line, RBR just blew their setup at Brazil by emphasizing slow corner downforce and Mercedes and Hamilton got the balance right. No magic engines, all of which are homologated along with their customers, two of whom are firmly in the bottom half of the field. And if RBR really thought that a new engine could make such a difference, they were always able put their money where their mouths were to take the 5 place grid spot for a new engine themselves. They should have been able to race to the front just as easily as Hamilton with their own new rocket, if any of that were true.
