The F1 Fight. In Jeddah. By Peter Windsor

  • It was a race within a race within a race: first Lewis led a Mercedes one-two; then Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen found himself P1, on new tyres, after not making a pit stop during the first Safety Car period. Then came the debris from a flurry of red flags, virtual safety cars, turn 1 skirmishes, mis-heard radio messages, a much-maligned Aston Martin Safety Car, a shunt on the straight, a pass, a re-pass, another pass, a wheel-clash, a five-second penalty for Max...and victory, finally, for Lewis and his battle-scarred Merc. Still sweating and with heart pounding, Peter Windsor in this video recalls the key moments of a race that will result in Max and Lewis facing-off in Abu Dhabi next weekend exactly equal on points.

A key detail ppl are overlooking is Max was instructed to give the position away “strategically” so there was definitely some gaming for the DRS by Max.

Why would it be anything but strategic 🤷‍♂️

    •  2 роки тому +60

Mate. Anyone would've done that, including Hamilton (as he did with Raikkonen in Spa). Hamilton lied: he knew exactly what was going on. He slowed down on purpose because he did not want to give Verstappen DRS

The point on track where Max tried to give the position back is probably the bast strategically, but poor for giving a clear indication to the other driver. They were effectively on a curved straight with the racing line a little unclear but ending up on the right for entry to the final hairpin. Max slowing down on the right could be seen as him trying to force Lewis to pass him on the left and have to take a tighter and slower line through the hairpin, to allow Max to come out with more exit speed and DRS to re-overtake on the front straight. To me that speaks to too much wiggle room in the rules for these kind of strategic moves. I propose the following options to tighten up the rules:
      1. If "giving a position back" you have to then give the other driver at least 2 clean corners of driving before you are eligible to attempt a re-overtake.
      2. Assign specific points on the track where official seeding a position can happen, and those points be chosen where there is a clear racing line for a driver to pull out of so it is obvious to the other driver what is happening. Obviously combine this with giving drivers more time (like an extra lap) to make such a move.

True. I think Lewis was very clever in completely backing off, and getting back on the track before turn 2, essentially sending the message that he could had made the corner but was forced wide, essentially making sure the stewards took note of that incident. It was a subtle move, but I think a very clever one.
What Max probably took from the Brazil incident was that he could get away with pushing Lewis wide, while Lewis thought of a way to not allow Max to get away with it.

I'm disappointed that nothing is being said about Max constantly being allowed to force his opponents off the track or go off track himself to gain or retain a position. The first red flag restart was especially bad. He went off track after a desperate lunge to regain 1st and then rejoined on the apex of turn 2 instead of right after it near the wall which was the safer option. Instead by rejoining in the middle of turn 2, it forced Hamilton to slow down and avoid him thus ensuring that he'd keep the position and allowed Ocon through as a bonus. Had he rejoined near the wall, he would have been faster and have a straighter path to the track but would have likely lost the position to Hamilton and might have been under pressure from Ocon. I also don't understand why some are saying Hamilton pushed him wide. He had the inside line and Max wasn't even alongside him initially and by the time he was it was too late. It was Hamilton's corner

It’s clear. Max slowed down drastically because he wanted to strategically give up the position to rig the drs for himself,to just retake the place, in effect, not give up the position. Lewis knew this and without knowing it was Max’s sneaky way of giving up the position, he thought max was just trying to secure drs, and tried to slow down and not go ahead to give max the drs. Now the stewards have rightly penalised him for dangerously and unusually slowing down so drastically. Yes max should let him pass but he doesn’t have to let him pass in that portion of the track, he could’ve slowed down and waited fo Hamilton to take the position whenever he does. Max doesn’t do this he wanted to force the swap before the drs zone.
Lastly, Max’s behaviour during the “swap” was very weird. It looked way too ambiguous. Usually people would move to one side not go in the middle of the tracks break to 60mph. It was weird and confusing.
I’m gonna call a spade a spade here, max is an underhanded driver who intends to win at the expense of honest racing. He will game the system beyond the intention of the rules, abuse them, to win and stay ahead.

Max fans should be honest across the board - Max is great but he doesn’t have the car to win the championship easy enough before last two races also Lewis is a great driver too and he drives at a very high and consistent level and proves he will work hard with the team on improving the car - he actually drove most of the test laps for Mercedes’ test of the 18 inch tires for next year’s Pirelli tire and test happened on the Monday after the Imola race. I am so tired of all this nonsense by Max fans - it’s Motorsport and if you don’t have the car even the best driver cannot win. I am just reminding myself that this is F1, probably at par with rocket science. To put an F1 car on the track is already an achievement. Bringing back the car to the finishing line is another feather in the cap. Repeating it through the season, wow! Now you end the second last in constructors championship, you are in the game. You are now start taking points, albeit single digits, for your drivers, you are highly respected and sponsors sign bigger deals. You are part of the F1 also run conversation.
You are getting drivers on the podiums. You are the heart of conversation.
I can go on but the point is that when you have a driver with 7 championship titles, most number of qualifying pole positions, 103 wins with 2 teams, you have to step back and appreciate what and who we are looking at.
Peter's comments are fair and amazed with his details but extremely diplomatic. Racing with Max, Lewis would have failed many times over and probably could have handed over the 2021 title to Max few races ago but here is Lewis; he is the master of the game. ! Like you said he can make these incredible moves on track like he did on the second restart. When HAM passed him with DRS though that dive from Max was basically a carbon copy of the Brazil situation. Sometimes you just have to cede the position, but Max just refuses to. I honestly think the Monza crash with HAM was another situation where Max refused to give in. I am not a Hamilton fan but each time Max makes one of these over the line defensive moves it makes me respect HAM more. He has done a phenomenal job staying out of trouble despite all these encounters with Max. Max always says the experience factor isn't important in the championship, but he is proving himself wrong with the moves he makes. HAM continues to remain disciplined and let his pace on track do the talking, which I respect him for. That being said I hope Max wins the championship next week with a clean result. If HAM wins he has definitely earned it no doubt.

I’m dutch and verstappen fan. I really want max to win the championship, and really can’t stand lewis. But the driving of Max the last three races has been appalling. Nothing wrong with hard defending, but braking too late and running wide or throwing your car alongside on the outside as last desperate attempt and leaving the track every time lewis tries to pass him these last races has nothing to do with hard defending. It is if we crash we crash attitude and that’s not ok. Mercedes and Lewis are faster at the moment and then as max always says “it is what it is”.
If you are faster or as fast and make a mistake and someone is going to pass you I could understand these moves, but in current F1 and with the drs if someone is that much faster he will pass you in the end.
In the beginning of the year lewis seemed to be cracking under the pressure a bit, making silly mistakes, but I think in this part of the season the experience of both Lewis and Mercedes is shining through.
I still want Verstappen to win the championship, but not like this.

Take the onboards with Lewis chasing Max. 300kph or so around blind bends with the Red Bull fleeting in and out of view. I kept thinking that at any moment that Red Bull will reappear but will be facing sideways or pointing backwards in a sea of carbon debris and smoke, and Lewis will have no chance whatsoever to avoid it. This circuit is far too dangerous. We were lucky this weekend, but if there isn't improvements made on this track I'd fear about future races here.

Max was penalized again for brake checking Hamilton with a second 2.4G brake (an additional 10 sec time penalty). Verstappen tried to strategically brake, forcing Hamilton to go through the DRS detector ahead of him - this would give him DRS on Hamilton, allowing Verstappen to deploy DRS and re-overtake Hamilton. When Hamilton refused to take the bait, Verstappen then stamped on the brakes a second time, causing Hamilton to run into him. I would not be surprised if Verstappen deliberately smashes into Hamilton on the last race as this would give him the championship based on race wins. We shall see! And that penalty didn't "change his grid position" as he was fast enough to overcome that by beating LeClerc. Just like Max was fast enough to overcome his penalty in Jeddah.

@@Dalisu87 You are right about one thing though, we can't imagine the FIA treating Mercedes with kid gloves because we don't need to. They've ACTUALLY been doing that for years.
Best example, it has allowed 8 years of Mercedes domination without changing any major rules. After 5 years of Ferrari domination (and it wasn't this one sided for all those years), FIA made major changes to ensure that Ferrari stop dominating. They did the same when Red Bull dominated for four years. Look at when the rule overhaul came for Mercedes, after 8 straight titles (this year's constructors title is done, regardless of who wins the drivers title).
Hamilton was clearly at fault in Silverstone and he actually took Max out in a truly life threatening crash. Where was the consequence of that for Lewis? He got the second most lenient penalty and conveniently repaired his damages during the Red Flag. Which makes his whining over Max changing his tyres in the Red Flag in Saudi even more hypocritical.
He also went on to eat 26 points off a 33 point lead. What consequence did he suffer? That is basically an incident that won him this year's title, or at worst, nullified all of Red Bull's early season pace advantage in one swoop. Where was the consequence for that penalty?
Why wasn't Hamilton given a penalty for not slowing down during double yellows in Saudi? Why wasn't he given a penalty for almost crashing into Mazepin in practice?
The FIA is a joke but it's pretty evident who gets treated with kid gloves more.
As per the offer, the FIA wasn't offering RedBull any benefits, Max was demoted from 1st to 3rd for illegally gaining the position off track, which is standard.
Later in the race, even after he gave the place back, they still gave him a 5 second penalty before adding more penalties in the post race investigations. I don't know how they treated him gently according to you.

Equally, even though open to everyone, these tactical “light “pit stops under safety car restrictions or “free” pit stops under red flag conditions just don’t seem right.
What would happen in NASCAR if for example, you examine the car under the red flag and notice the tyres are shredded? Do you change them and then start at the back for the restart?

22:05 I think Lewis ran him off wide because the previous time that Max "let Lewis by," he did it right before the DRS section. So Max let Lewis by, and then immediately retook the position. So I thought the 2nd time that Max let Lewis by, Lewis wanted to ensure he covered off any trickery from Max. Also, it was weird to me that literally the **very instant** that Hamilton hit the back of Verstappen's car, Verstappen floored it and took off.

    • @NardKoning
      @NardKoning 2 роки тому +11

Honestly, what I think is that the touch was unintentional, but this happened:
      1. Both drivers know exactly what they are doing w.r.t. DRS line. Max keeps slowing down gradually at first, but stays a bit in the middle so Lewis has an unfavourable line. Lewis doesn't go for it cause he understands what is happening.
      2. At this point, if Max just drives off Lewis will easily take him into T1. Max decides to brake to force a gap, and then immediately accelerate away. Imagine what happens: Max brakes suddenly, forcing Lewis to react, Max by that time is already accelerating, kinda like a safety car restart. However, they actually ended up colliding instead. This is what I think the plan was.

@@utsa04 In F1, braketesting is easier to get the front car DNF 'cause if the back car has enough speed, the front car's rear wing, gearbox or rear suspension can easily be damaged, whereas in that case the back car may only need to change a front wing, unless the back car would would have suspension damage. (It's different from road cars braketesting anyway). You take 2018 Baku as example: Max also retired by his own aggressive defense over Daniel. But in Saudi Arabia, there wasn't enough speed. And even if by breaktesting, Max could cause Lewis' front suspension broken, Max would likely have rear suspension damage or else, too.
So to me, I don't think Max has any reason to breaktest to create a Lewis DNF. If Lewis DNF at Saudi Arabia is really what Max want, he would have force Lewis into one of the wall.

Max was given a 10s penalty after the race because he shouldn't have braked there (2.4g's of braking apparently). If max was genuinely letting Lewis pass, he would have pulled over to one side very obviously then slowed down - even after the collisions he would have let Lewis go passed instead of just driving off and leaving the carnage behinds.. I too think he wanted to cause a crash so they both DNF or Lewis had to change his front wing. Max would just say he was slowing to let Lewis pass as if he is innocent. Max is supremely talented, but I find his driving to be a complete turnoff because he drives like a bully who needs to overdrive the car (Kimi? Alonzo at times? Tsunoda when he sees a Mercedes’?) rather than the supreme talent he is. It’s classless and entitled and I wonder if he needs to shunt his father like Hamilton did in order to reach his real potential. If he were at Ferrari or McLaren, this style of driving would’ve been tempered a while ago, but Red Bull seems to encourage it for their own benefit in points rather than for their brand reputation for racing and subsequent car sales; the Vettel years with Webber are a prime example for me. Peter has being very kind in his description of Max’s driving this year.

  • @dzelpwr
    @dzelpwr 2 роки тому +4

The Max brake check incident was a bizarre one. I don't think Max necessarily wanted Lewis to rear end him, but there definitely was a strategic reason on Max's part on why he was trying to let Lewis by just before the last corner. Because that last corner is rather slow, Max should in theory be able to tuck nicely behind Lewis, but then draft him and maybe even get DRS down the front straight so he could make another run on Lewis back into turn 1 if he allowed Lewis by at just the right location just prior to the last corner.
It's both satisfying the stewards' ruling to give up the position but also giving himself the best shot at retaking the position as quickly as possible. At least that's how I see the logic in his mind working.
However, he did a poor job of this. As he slowed for Lewis, he was nearly in the middle of the track and from Lewis' point of view, he had no idea what the intentions were or if Max was going to swerve one way or another because he did not stay to one side of the track or another, he was in the middle, maybe also to force Lewis into a poor line through the last turn to again, give himself a better chance at a good corner exit to draft Lewis and potentially retake the lead very soon after letting Lewis by.
If Max had stayed closer to the curbs on the right, it would give Lewis that much more room to work with and make it more obvious what his intentions were. But him braking hard right in the middle of the track was definitely a WTF moment. Or, if Max had done the safer thing and simply let Lewis by on the front straight, it would have been a lot more obvious.
But that's not Max. He's not thinking about being safe, he's always thinking of "How can I serve the penalty while still maximizing my shot at retaking the position?" It does make things interesting, that's for sure. But it also contributes to his reputation as eschewing common sense in favor of shear aggression to win.

good read and globally agreed. But i still do think everybody forget's about the couple of hundred meters before the "brake-test". Max was already really slowing down on the exit of 25, and throughout 26. Then when Lewis didn't overtake him Max was like: c'mon get it over with, why are you staying behind? So yes at that point both of them will be thinking about the DRS line, but that happens as a result of the doubt Lewis had what was going on.
i think it's just an example of the MB having the clear overhand on pace, so Lewis can drive at 98%, and RB has lost a lot of ground pace-wise, so if Max still want's a shot at the title, he needs to drive at 102%
