  • The magic continued for Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton on Sunday in Brazil, for he parlayed his P10 starting position into what may be remembered as his greatest F1 drive yet. Third by lap five, he was in front, and cruising, with ten laps to run, beating his championship rival, Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen, in front of an adoring, capacity Brazilian crowd. On his victory lap, Lewis carried the Brazilian national flag home to the pits, Senna-style - and no-one begrudged him the gesture. Valtteri Bottas, who started his Mercedes from the pole, finished third, ahead of Verstappen's team-mate, Sergio Pérez, and the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Peter Windsor in this video offers a guide to the key moments of this epic F1 day.

This was a Legend doing legendary stuff.. AGAIN. He does stuff like this every year and a lot of people acknowledge it for a couple days and then go back to dismissing his greatness and applauding some middle of the pack driver that finished p7. You do not have to like him, you can roll your eyes at what he does on social media, you can root for the new guys in F1 to dethrone him but do not diminish his accomplishments or discredit his talent. We are watching an all time great and he didn't need this win or this season to prove that.

In my eye, Max has been the better driver this year by a small, but clear margin, but I truly don’t know if Max could have done that drive(s) at this point in his career, even with machinery that is 1-2% quicker than everyone else.

What makes you a Max fan? I personally think with 9 wins, he deserves the championship but on the other side. He cant take what he gives to others. Bullies his way in overtaking but crashes out when someone tries to push him. Complains about late moves but he does it himself.
I hope next year Russell and Leclerc doesnt let him make another Vettel era.

    • @S0ulinth3machin3
      @S0ulinth3machin3 2 роки тому +8

@@florinivan693 part of the reason he gets so much speed on the straight is the drive he gets out of turn 12. It's not just the engine, turn 12 is medium-high speed. Mercedes runs less downforce than RedBull so they're faster through there and that extra speed carries into the straight. On the flip side, Max had 0.3 seconds advantage through the slower turns because of RedBull's greater downforce. It's a tradeoff, RedBull is better at a certain type of track, Mercedes is better at another type of track. Regardless, the drivers still matter. It's always Max vs. Lewis and Bottas vs. Perez is a sideshow because Bottas and Perez aren't as skilled. Bottas was running the same car as Hamilton and he went 1st to 1st in the sprint and 1st to 3rd in race. Bottas was -2 places overall while Hamilton was +25. In the same car.

I was a bit emotional as well after Lewis crossed the finish line and took the Brazilian flag. After such heroic win in Brazil, with Lewis being a Senna fan, wearing his colours on his helmet, plus the unbelievable Senna-esque performance, that gesture with the flag felt almost as if Senna's spirit took a ride with Lewis that moment, and enjoyed another heroic win in front of his home crowd once more, through Lewis. I literally stood up from my couch and applauded him as he crossed the line. What a performance! Yes, the Mercedes was fast, but come on. It takes a special driver to do what he did, especially against a very strong Max in the Redbull. This was supposed to be a Redbull track. Amazing. It's one of those rare performances in the history of the sport that one is privileged to have witnessed.

As a Brazilian, I was surprised to see Lewis take the Brazilian flag.
But we all know his admiration for Senna, that is one of the reasons he has so many fans here. So it felt like an homage to Senna, from the helmet to the flag.
And Obviously Senna is a national hero.
Edit: some people saying it was a cheap PR move. The fact Lewis has been a declared fan of Senna for basically his entire life is the difference. We all know this for years. So it seemed fitting - not a PR move, an homage. And it hasn’t started yesterday. When Lewis says “I saw Senna doing this many times”, we know it wasn’t a lie.
And I say that as someone who wishes Max wins it all at the end of this year.

You get a lot of “benefit of the doubt on the inside”, even when (as in this case) the driver on the outside has gotten largely past. But “benefit of the doubt” doesn’t mean you get to take yourself AND your opponent off the track. That simply cannot stand as an acceptable strategy, as it means “let them race” =
“Let my driver go off track combatting an overtake, with no consequences”.

Honestly though, the point regarding taking full responsibility for overtaking on the outside should only stand if the inside car is firmly on the racing line. In this case, Max had no reason to miss the apex by a half a car's width (a full car if one would take the kerb), and end up on the exit with all 4 wheels, 2 car widths outside the track. This and his constant weaving shows his racecraft and sportsmanship has got quite a bit of way to mature before being considered at Lewis' or Fernando's level.

Unfortunately as a Max supporter I do have to agree with you. I would like him to concentrate on his decisions and his fights a little better, Lewis still has the edge there.
That time when Max was in the lead and got into a collision with Ocon always springs to my mind.
Lewis said very correctly: you had everything to lose and he had nothing to lose. I hope Max looks back at interlagos not just as a “they were just too quick” situation, but also uses the opportunity to deepen his understanding of when to concede in a way that does not cause him (let alone the opponent) any unnecessary risks or penalties. Had he have gotten a 5 second penalty for those shenanigans he may well have ended up P3.
He’s ahead in the championship, he should try and avoid the volatility of unnecessary contacts, penalties and potential DNF’s if he is to win this year.

@@myaccount6905 Hamilton was most definitely in the wrong at Silverstone, but Verstappen allowed Hamiltons “mistake” on the inside to shunt him in the barriers with 51G. A ten second penalty doesn’t help you when your race is over.
If Max doesn’t turn in he survives and still gets to contest for P1. If he turns in Lewis is in the wrong because Max was on the racing line, but it makes no difference because his race is over curtesy of a 51G slam.
This is my point about Max, he drives faster yes. He is fearless, also true, and I really hope he wins his first of many championships this year. But that said, he does need have a look at his decisions when he is the one that stands to lose the most if contact does happen.
Lewis was well behind in the championship at that stage, he has to and WILL take increasingly more risks to put himself into contention. It is on Max to keep himself out of trouble and his nose clean when he has so much to lose, my only claim is that this is what Lewis does better than Max.

I just think that the stewards made a very bad decision and are now setting a bad precedent. A move like VER did could be exploited and used by other drivers to make sure no one overtakes them. VER could’ve ended HAM race. Fortunately, HAM anticipated that move and avoided collision, as usual. Now this brings me to think that RB or Max is willing to sacrifice races just to stay on top (i.e. Monza). The worst part is that the stewards made a decision (a quick one) without Max’s onboard footage. That’s just ridiculous! The stewards need to step their games up because the championship is getting more intense and not making a call on that move was quite suspect to say the least, especially after all the penalties Mercedes collected throughout the weekend.

If this sets precedence then god help anyone driving with drivers like Alonso. Lewis was turning and could make the corner and only went wide to avoid a collision. Max didn’t try. Wow, what an amazing drive by LH. After DQ and back of the grid in sprint, guaranteed LH best driving EVER. Enjoyed the batter of this race, personally I think this is the best race for 2021 season. Dramas, strategy, defense and attacking. I hope we get to see more great racing like this going forward. Peter, great analysis as always.

Max wins in a super high downforce car with crazy cornering speed. Max fanboys: "SUPER MAX!"
Lewis wins in a car with lower downforce but higher straight line speed. Max fanboys: "HE'S GOT AN UNFAIR CAR!"
Max fully deserves to be champion this year but good lord some of his fanboys are downright obnoxious.

Contrast Lewis getting on the radio and saying "Tell Valtteri to stay with me so we can get this guys!" with Verstappen getting on the radio in Austin to tell Red Bull to use Perez as a sacrificial lamp to block Hamilton for him, or Perez's request to have Max give him DRS so he can defend against Hamilton in Brazil....and Max being absolutely silent or the team ignoring it! Great stuff!
