My father Leonard Baca R.I.P, March 1957 to January 2021. Was one of the formen in charge of the concrete work at the Luxor and this documentary does not mention when a few floors collapsed while they were pouring concrete. I remember my father telling me about it when I was a kid.
I wish this documentary focused on the construction of the actual structure more. For instance, it would've been interesting to hear about why they didn't need a system of supports to hold up each floor until the whole pyramid was finished.

Totally agree. First time I stayed there was in the mid-90's, I was 12 and I recall they had an amazing game floor for kids, the best on the Strip, and I was blown away. Now, it's just a sad, cigarette smoke filled, pyramid.
It was a dump in 2014, which is sad for such an aspirational, expensive and recognizable property like this. They could've possibly gone after a more upscale market, but maybe the numbers didn't crunch right for that. Who knows.
I've lived in Vegas since '92. Used to go to the Luxor with my friends and go on the theater rides. As someone who's interested in ancient Egypt, I really liked the Tutankhamen museum they had. When they re-did the interior and built the two towers, I was on the crew that tore out the Nile River ride. I drove a Bobcat with a breaker on the front and hammered out the concrete. Made me sad tearing that out.

Great video... My family and I went there in early 1994 when I was 11 and it was truly magical. As a kid I loved ancient Egypt and it was so amazing to experience this. My wife and I went back to Vegas a couple of years ago and it was sad to see what the Luxor had become. Far fewer artifacts, displays, no more river ride, no more employees in period-correct dress.. The experience was nearly gone. Dumbed down into just another vaguely themed Vegas casino.
I was there thanksgiving week 1994, that place was so awesome. Driving in from LA it was fun seeing the light from before state line. The cocktail waitresses had Egyptian Togo type outfits and their arcade and 3D movies were so much fun. I like the themed resorts and buildings, they make the skyline look unique, the new places don’t have anything cool looking anymore. Last cool thing was the fountains at Bellagio. Mirage has a volcano, mgm the giant lion, Paris an Eiffel Tower etc... now they are all just high rises that look like a building from any major city in the world. Losing its uniqueness.

Yeah, I remember when it was Luxor and then the next best thing was Excalibur. MGM was also a gem but it was too big in my opinion, and the rest of the strip back then was nothing.
My brother was the plumbing/mechanical inspector there along with the MGM Grand, he got me in the plumbers union and I worked there till top-off there was a huge party when the four cores (corners) tied in at the top, we threw our plumbing Forman in the moat it was awesome loved working there. Sad to here it's gone downhill. I still have my top-out shirt!
As a high rise window cleaner in 2002 I went to the top of the luxor and saw those massive lights. We went through lots of doors and up ladders to get there. It was awesome !
MGM worked very hard to de-theme Luxor, Excalibur and MGM Grand. They removed every unique, exciting, cool and fun thing that they could. They recently removed Merlin from Excalibur (he was sparkling and visible from everywhere outside) and just left a black hole where he used to be. MGM with their endless greed, resort fees, stingy -not-really-comps, paid parking, $40+ low quality, laughably bad buffets - has literally sucked all the fun and value out of the entire city. They ran Circus Circus like a toilet. Sewage leaks, ratty old carpet with huge rips and holes throughout the casino, the smell of wet garbage and ZERO attention paid to maintaining anything... MGM is a cancer on Las Vegas.
the MGM hotels are still the only ones that aren't just generic giant white rectangle buildings, except Ceasers Palace. I'm surprised Luxor, Excalibur, and New York New York are even still there
Thanks for posting this. I ve stayed at the Luxor many times since it opened. I remember buying this video on VHS in the Luxor gift shop. Hard to believe this hotel is almost 30 years old by now.
They really have dumbed it down and it has no ambiance now versus back in the day. It is just another casino that happens to have a pyramid shape to it and that's it.
3D animation wasn't "brand new" in '93, that kind of research and experimentation already started in the early 70s. By the early 80s it already was everywhere in commercials, showing off those flashy chrome logos. :) background: being 43 years in that business :)
i love staying at the luxor! the rooms are very comfortable and quiet, the pool's great, the casino's fine, and i think the architecture of the place is really cool. and it smells nice as well.

That was the year I went to Vegas for the first time. I stayed at Luxor, and they were in the middle of renovations. I wish I got to see it in it's glory. Now I usually don't even go there at all when I'm in Vegas

6:48, the base of the motion vehicle of "insearch of the obelisk" is imax's classic motion simulator system called the "orthogonal motion base" instead of tilting, it would shake, rattle, and roll. The function of thr base is to move up and down, and roll back and foeward, and side to side.
It's interesting watching this while currently staying at the Luxor. (1.23.2020) Everyone's mentioning how it's not what it used to be, it's a dump, blah-blah-blah..I'm not offended by the lack of technology, etc..It's nearly 30 years old, who expects it to compete with more modern hotels/casinos? I don't. I'm just glad be away from work and home🙂
Luxor has been my favorite since it opened. It's so unique and such a showpiece. I sure miss the attraction trilogy, especially the Nile River Tour. Having that inside a hotel was mind-blowing. But, things change. I'm glad Luxor is still there and hope it remains for many years to come.
I completely agree, 100%! One-hundred-percent!!! Non-themed properties get boring within the first hour or so. Where is the magic? Being transported to far-off destinations? Layers of themed details to create imaginative worlds? I miss the excitement of the 1990s as each themed hotel/casino opened...
I take it both of you guys are not gamblers! #1 generator of income in Las Vegas gambling, #2 room suites revenue, #3 shopping spent, #4 restaurants and bars, #5 concerts and shows. Least generator of income in Las Vegas is "old attractions"
I was excited to stay at the Luxor 5 years ago. I remember it being a really nice property in the mid-90's. Needless to say, I was dismayed by the state of ruin the property was in. It was apparent that no money had ever been put into maintenance. The finishes were ratty and the elevators down right scary. Even our room, which was supposedly remodeled, was in tatters. It's only a matter of time until this place is torn down.
Just for reference, my 1994 laptop's hard drive had a whopping 40 Mb capacity. That was pretty much standard for the time. A 90 Mb file, back then, would be comparable to a 500 Gb file today. It would very likely fill up your entire hard drive.
I remember getting my first PC in like 1998 and it only had 750Mb hard drive and that was considered huge at the time. I think we paid close to $3000 for that computer.
I remember when I was a kid I was so fascinated by big construction projects and I remember the mid '90s it seemed like they were building a new casino resort every month or two it was crazy I guess the '90s was a big boom era for casinos. The Luxor, Venetian, and Bellagio I think were some of the most memorable of them all. Though I didn't actually make it to the strip to see any of them till like 2012.
I feel bad for you if you missed all the good years of Las Vegas. I missed a lot of them as well, but did manage to get the last 5 years that were still ok. A lot changed I wont get into, but its not for players and nostalgia like this is being drowned out by the owners taking many different directions. But definitely, get as much Vegas history as you can, when times were still openly fun and the games were still playable and prices/fees didnt run everyone over.
New supporter here. Very informative to see how much effort went into the creation of Luxor. I used to stay there frequently in the early 2000s. Still fun to stay in a pyramid and ride the inclinators.
I was in Las Vegas just last week. The Excalibur and Luxor have not been very well maintained, or updated, and the word is that they will both be torn down to make way for something new. I stayed on one of the top floors of the Luxor pyramid in 1996, and it was nice then, but today is extremely dated. Last week, I was at the Cosmopolitan, which was incredible. Vegas trends come and go, I guess... It's always changing. For those who still love the Luxor, go now, while you still can.
The Luxor has the Titanic exhibit including a huge part of the Titanic that was recovered from the ocean. I recommend it to anyone who is intetested in the Titanic.

Me too! Early-to-late 90s was the best. Before the BO-ring glass & steel curved monoliths rose on the Strip, we were welcomed to Paris! Venice! A king’s castle! The Wizard’s MGM! the Big Apple! The ultimate pirate’s village! Exotic island retreat! Monte Carlo! Aladdin’s place! Visit Caesar’s place or take the kids to the circus! I miss those days more than I can say... (And I lament it to everyone.)
Went to Las Vegas for my Bday once, stayed at The Luxor (in the pyramid part). In my room, I could have sworn i felt the building swaying, like it was gonna fall in on itself. Apparently I was subconsciously feeling it, because it reminded me of the cruises I took as a kid.
This pyramid is the most iconic location in Vegas, idk how the fuck the could ruin it so bad! Someone with brains and vision needs to take over and give this architectural wonder the life it needs, and cries our for!
My friend and I always included a stop at Luxor when we visited Las Vegas in the 90s. There was a photo booth there (only one I've ever seen) that would first take a picture of us individually and then print out pictures of our "children". Did that for a number of years (and still have those picures).
As a Vegas native watching this thing being constructed day by day as a kid I was so curious what it was like on the inside. Other properties had exterior attractions worth seeing but very little reason to go inside (as a kid anyway). The Luxor's design pretty much made going inside to see it for yourself a must, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

We have stayed there off and on but everytime we go there they lately they have lost some of its charm. They should bring back many of the original sites, the Nile River, etc.

I remember the Lazer show in front of the Sphinx, untill the airport put an end to it. I remember going on the boat ride around the casino, that later got removed after only three years. I remember the blast from the past ride and that was amazing as a 15yo teenager back in 94. The luxor is a unique casino.
I like the atmosphere inside the pyramid. It's a little darker, and a sort of muffled feel. Probably due to the extreme volume swallowing up sound energy. I stayed here once and definitely enjoyed it. When I first went to Vegas in 2002 I fell for it. It Will always have a special place in my mind.

I stayed there in 2005. It was in sad shape. The drapes were water stained, the halls by the elevators smelled like urine and the carpet was worn out. I felt like I was staying at Binion's in downtown, but Binion's was a lot older so you expect that!
Ahhh, my memory isn't as bad as I thought it was. I used to live in Vegas back in the 90s and I swore there was a boat ride inside the hotel. But when I went back it wasn't there and I was wondering if I remembered incorrectly. But there it is in this video.
I stayed there in 1994 and it was pretty cool. I had a jacuzzi suite. The elevators were called inclinators. And the Nile river ran around the inside of the hotel. I visited years ago in 2012 and that uniqueness was pretty much gone. They took out the Nile completely and you could not tell it was even there. All dried up. I asked what happened to it and the guy who worked there said it was trouble from the start.! The boats always broke down and too much maintenance and cost to keep. It was a unique hotel back then but today it’s kinda forgotten.
Walked through it for the first time recently and I was amazed. Even if it's been neglected and lost much of its theming, it remains an impressive sight to behold
In my town we can't build a bathroom in less than a year. I am always amazed how quickly they can put up these properties. The stress that must be placed on these project managers must be mind bending.
MGM Resorts almost completely took away its appeal as an actual mega resort. It is now a watered down casino and hotel; Taken away much of it's original Egyptian themes. The Luxor Hotel and Casino, at it's time, was a architectural marvel. I could only imagine how large the casino was when it opened, and before they took away much of the casino floor to occupy entertainment venues. I was always stay here when I go to Las Vegas!
From 1995 to 2001 I was a very frequent visitor of the Luxor. I was there enough that the valets on the north side knew me on a first name basis. I knew the crew at the sushi restaurant and the sundries down stairs knew what my 'usual' was. I had a suite in the towers or had the jacuzzi suite. I was fun while it lasted.
So the simulator and Nile river isn't available to ride today in 2021? All that work should be restored if possible! So cool! I was able to stay in a suite at the Luxor on my wedding night back in 2005. It was so beautiful!! The slanted ceiling was awesome.
This is downright amazing. I visited the Luxor yesterday but they removed most of the "enetertainment" aspect of the hotel/casino. I think it's because it's outdated technology but still, they could've replaced it with something else.
It’s only because 90’s/early 00’s Vegas is long gone. When MGM and Caesar’s started buying up all the properties on the strip they became big corporations. There isn’t really an independently owned casino here anymore. MGM has let the Luxor go downhill and are always constantly talking about tearing it down.
I remember back when they first built Luxor, and Vegas was still a small city, the sand dunes that would build up on all the cars on the ground floor, and only, parking lots of Luxor and Excalibur. Beyond that there was only desert.
I hope they update the rooms soon. I had never stayed there until October last year. Honestly, the room felt like a Motel 6. It was dated and dirty. The table had graffiti carved into it. There were so many stains to the carpet at first glance I thought maybe there was a pattern. It was sad to see such a beautiful casino with such awful rooms. Same with Circus Circus. Having the adventure dome and arcade is a fabulous selling point until you see the rooms and parking areas.

I was an engineering student at UNLV and got to tour this structure multiple times as it was being constructed. Exciting times!

That was the year I went to Vegas for the first time. I stayed at Luxor, and they were in the middle of renovations. I wish I got to see it in it's glory. Now I usually don't even go there at all when I'm in Vegas

6:48, the base of the motion vehicle of "insearch of the obelisk" is imax's classic motion simulator system called the "orthogonal motion base" instead of tilting, it would shake, rattle, and roll. The function of thr base is to move up and down, and roll back and foeward, and side to side.

Luxor has been my favorite since it opened. It's so unique and such a showpiece. I sure miss the attraction trilogy, especially the Nile River Tour. Having that inside a hotel was mind-blowing. But, things change. I'm glad Luxor is still there and hope it remains for many years to come.

Last time I was in Luxor was 1996. It was awesome to walk around back then. Now all the new casinos just look the same with no uniqueness.

I completely agree, 100%! One-hundred-percent!!! Non-themed properties get boring within the first hour or so. Where is the magic? Being transported to far-off destinations? Layers of themed details to create imaginative worlds? I miss the excitement of the 1990s as each themed hotel/casino opened...

I was excited to stay at the Luxor 5 years ago. I remember it being a really nice property in the mid-90's. Needless to say, I was dismayed by the state of ruin the property was in. It was apparent that no money had ever been put into maintenance. The finishes were ratty and the elevators down right scary. Even our room, which was supposedly remodeled, was in tatters. It's only a matter of time until this place is torn down.

I love how ahead of its time or state of the art everyone is saying Luxor was. now today it's woefully outclassed.
Just for reference, my 1994 laptop's hard drive had a whopping 40 Mb capacity. That was pretty much standard for the time. A 90 Mb file, back then, would be comparable to a 500 Gb file today. It would very likely fill up your entire hard drive.
I remember getting my first PC in like 1998 and it only had 750Mb hard drive and that was considered huge at the time. I think we paid close to $3000 for that computer.
I remember when I was a kid I was so fascinated by big construction projects and I remember the mid '90s it seemed like they were building a new casino resort every month or two it was crazy I guess the '90s was a big boom era for casinos. The Luxor, Venetian, and Bellagio I think were some of the most memorable of them all.
Though I didn't actually make it to the strip to see any of them till like 2012.

I feel bad for you if you missed all the good years of Las Vegas. I missed a lot of them as well, but did manage to get the last 5 years that were still ok. A lot changed I wont get into, but its not for players and nostalgia like this is being drowned out by the owners taking many different directions. But definitely, get as much Vegas history as you can, when times were still openly fun and the games were still playable and prices/fees didnt run everyone over.

New supporter here. Very informative to see how much effort went into the creation of Luxor. I used to stay there frequently in the early 2000s. Still fun to stay in a pyramid and ride the inclinators.

Those elevators are nightmarish 😳
the elevators are the coolest part of the hotel would of been nice of them to focus on those more versus the weird Egyptian space battle.

I was in Las Vegas just last week. The Excalibur and Luxor have not been very well maintained, or updated, and the word is that they will both be torn down to make way for something new. I stayed on one of the top floors of the Luxor pyramid in 1996, and it was nice then, but today is extremely dated. Last week, I was at the Cosmopolitan, which was incredible. Vegas trends come and go, I guess... It's always changing. For those who still love the Luxor, go now, while you still can.

The Luxor has the Titanic exhibit including a huge part of the Titanic that was recovered from the ocean.
I recommend it to anyone who is intetested in the Titanic.
It's one piece of metal and some artifacts like dishes. The rest is badly made video clips and tasteless and cheaply made (but expensive) merchandise.

Me too! Early-to-late 90s was the best. Before the BO-ring glass & steel curved monoliths rose on the Strip, we were welcomed to Paris! Venice! A king’s castle! The Wizard’s MGM! the Big Apple! The ultimate pirate’s village! Exotic island retreat! Monte Carlo! Aladdin’s place! Visit Caesar’s place or take the kids to the circus! I miss those days more than I can say... (And I lament it to everyone.)
It’s sad that the Luxor has lost a ton of its Egyptian charm on the inside.
It is a dump. the rooms are better now but still poor AC and the hallways, elevators and public areas need alot of work.

Went to Las Vegas for my Bday once, stayed at The Luxor (in the pyramid part). In my room, I could have sworn i felt the building swaying, like it was gonna fall in on itself. Apparently I was subconsciously feeling it, because it reminded me of the cruises I took as a kid.
Come to find out it was and still is actually sinking in the ground.

This pyramid is the most iconic location in Vegas, idk how the fuck the could ruin it so bad! Someone with brains and vision needs to take over and give this architectural wonder the life it needs, and cries our for!

Stayed at the Luxor about 15 years ago. You could stay there for a week and never leave the building and not run out of things to do.
My friend and I always included a stop at Luxor when we visited Las Vegas in the 90s. There was a photo booth there (only one I've ever seen) that would first take a picture of us individually and then print out pictures of our "children". Did that for a number of years (and still have those picures).
I remember that! Had one that made me look like a dog..sorta..haha

When I first came to Vegas in 1994 the Luxor dominated the strip, and they shined that spacelight full blast all the time. It was something.
As a Vegas native watching this thing being constructed day by day as a kid I was so curious what it was like on the inside. Other properties had exterior attractions worth seeing but very little reason to go inside (as a kid anyway). The Luxor's design pretty much made going inside to see it for yourself a must, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
MGM took over and made it into another one of their cookie cutter casinos.
How so? the hotel is identical to when it opened with the exception of the water ride

Spent Six Months next door at Excalibur Pool for eight hours a day witnessing this Incredible structure being built up to the Apex.
I remember staying at the Luxor in spring of '94 and my wife and I loved it. We loved the Nile River, everything about ancient Egypt. We have stayed there off and on but everytime we go there they lately they have lost some of its charm. They should bring back many of the original sites, the Nile River, etc.
It’s amazing how much it’s not like this anymore. Pretty much all the special effects are gone . No lazer beam eyes or rides . It’s too bad . What a place it once was !
I remember the Lazer show in front of the Sphinx, untill the airport put an end to it. I remember going on the boat ride around the casino, that later got removed after only three years. I remember the blast from the past ride and that was amazing as a 15yo teenager back in 94. The luxor is a unique casino.
I like the atmosphere inside the pyramid. It's a little darker, and a sort of muffled feel. Probably due to the extreme volume swallowing up sound energy. I stayed here once and definitely enjoyed it. When I first went to Vegas in 2002 I fell for it. It Will always have a special place in my mind.

I stayed there in 2005. It was in sad shape. The drapes were water stained, the halls by the elevators smelled like urine and the carpet was worn out. I felt like I was staying at Binion's in downtown, but Binion's was a lot older so you expect that!

I watched it being built daily on my way to work at the Mirage. They had a hell of a time with the windows. They kept falling out. Tough build.
I was told to stay here at Luxor, but I stayed at Biff’s Hotel where I was robbed.
I was really impressed with Douglas Trumbull's Showscan technology. I saw that show on every visit to Vegas until it closed. I miss the old Luxor.

Ahhh, my memory isn't as bad as I thought it was. I used to live in Vegas back in the 90s and I swore there was a boat ride inside the hotel. But when I went back it wasn't there and I was wondering if I remembered incorrectly. But there it is in this video.

@Blake Davlin The walkway around the exterior of the casino was widened and now you just don't know it was there.
The boat ride was also considered to be haunted from the workers who died in construction.

Nothing lasts long in Vegas what once was new and incredible soon becomes overshadowed by the latest greatest thing.
I stayed there in 1994 and it was pretty cool. I had a jacuzzi suite. The elevators were called inclinators. And the Nile river ran around the inside of the hotel. I visited years ago in 2012 and that uniqueness was pretty much gone. They took out the Nile completely and you could not tell it was even there. All dried up. I asked what happened to it and the guy who worked there said it was trouble from the start.! The boats always broke down and too much maintenance and cost to keep. It was a unique hotel back then but today it’s kinda forgotten.
Walked through it for the first time recently and I was amazed. Even if it's been neglected and lost much of its theming, it remains an impressive sight to behold
It was so cool to visit as a kid in the mid 90's. Unfortunately, too many obnoxious, low-class, pothead guests ruin the experience today.
In my town we can't build a bathroom in less than a year. I am always amazed how quickly they can put up these properties. The stress that must be placed on these project managers must be mind bending.
MGM Resorts almost completely took away its appeal as an actual mega resort. It is now a watered down casino and hotel; Taken away much of it's original Egyptian themes. The Luxor Hotel and Casino, at it's time, was a architectural marvel. I could only imagine how large the casino was when it opened, and before they took away much of the casino floor to occupy entertainment venues. I was always stay here when I go to Las Vegas!
From 1995 to 2001 I was a very frequent visitor of the Luxor. I was there enough that the valets on the north side knew me on a first name basis. I knew the crew at the sushi restaurant and the sundries down stairs knew what my 'usual' was. I had a suite in the towers or had the jacuzzi suite. I was fun while it lasted.
This place smells like a giant cig. And trust me, I’m a huge fan of second hand smoke!
All that thought and effort and it’s just changed every few years. Titanic museum I think was present the last time I walked through.

I was able to stay in a suite at the Luxor on my wedding night back in 2005. It was so beautiful!! The slanted ceiling was awesome.
The river was gone before I stayed there in 1999. So disappointed. You couldn't have seen the river in 2005!
This is downright amazing. I visited the Luxor yesterday but they removed most of the "enetertainment" aspect of the hotel/casino. I think it's because it's outdated technology but still, they could've replaced it with something else.
It’s only because 90’s/early 00’s Vegas is long gone. When MGM and Caesar’s started buying up all the properties on the strip they became big corporations. There isn’t really an independently owned casino here anymore. MGM has let the Luxor go downhill and are always constantly talking about tearing it down.

I have a friend that worked on the Luxor he said they took short cuts on the light it was to difficult to deal with so it may start sinking over time.

I remember back when they first built Luxor, and Vegas was still a small city, the sand dunes that would build up on all the cars on the ground floor, and only, parking lots of Luxor and Excalibur. Beyond that there was only desert.

I hope they update the rooms soon. I had never stayed there until October last year. Honestly, the room felt like a Motel 6. It was dated and dirty. The table had graffiti carved into it. There were so many stains to the carpet at first glance I thought maybe there was a pattern. It was sad to see such a beautiful casino with such awful rooms. Same with Circus Circus. Having the adventure dome and arcade is a fabulous selling point until you see the rooms and parking areas.
Yea I can remember the very early days of the hotel. I have a picture of my dad standing beside one of those 20 ft tall statues.
