Season 1, Episode 6. A mugging investigation leads to city corruption involving a councilman and the parking violations bureau.
This is the official UA-cam channel for Law & Order. Watch all of the official clips from the series, some of the best moments from within the criminal justice system, where the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders.

Man I wish sandwiches we're $2.75 nowadays.
Btw in case anyone is wondering ”ran the pad” is old time slang meaning he bribed people.
Dude thanks i didnt understand anything jaja
...let's check the car.
Man, I wanna start using that term now. I just can't think of any situation where I would...
Okay. What does frost my cookies mean
@@Jai137 It means to spread a light glaze consisting of powdered sugar, vanilla and milk over freshly baked cookies so as to add a top layer of extra sweetness, often including food coloring for decorative effect.
Or it means to make someone really mad.
I love the dynamic of two different Catholics. Logan, the more modern Catholic, and Greevy, the more traditional, old fashioned Catholic, when they have a case that has morality themes.
Max is so chill. He ate a sandwich at a crime scene and had a cigar though out the night without it being lit
In 8th Grade, I ate my sandwiches through science class videos of open heart surgery and a Caesarian section. Didn't bother me one iota. The same cannot be said for my classmates. 😆
Early/mid 90s Law and Order was top notch.
This is season 1. 1986
You mean top Noth.
Things went down hill after McCoy joined and Kincaid died
@Jojew 1988 this was episode was supposed to be the pilot episode for the series it was filmed in 88
@@KS-qr1ry I had no issue with McCoy, it's just you could tell that the writers were starting to become modern day leftists, and the show began to reflect that because his character changed.
For instance: He had to argue against gay marriage at one point to get a defendant, but he would never do that in the later seasons. He also argued for sterilization too, but the later writers had him say, "it was a mistake" in last seasons. McCoy used be rather complex, until Law and Order changed.
It's the same with SVU. Stabler and Olivia were great up until the former left, and then the show began to transition into a "believe all women" dull-fest.
Sometimes, when I watch the new SVU episodes, I just want the bad guys to win because the characters have become so stuck up.
Man that gritty camera work is amazing. It just has such a different feel than what is seen today.
Yeah the camera always moving gave it a level of realism that even today it hasn't gotten old or stale. ..
You got that right! Gorgeous!
The original pilot was shot on 16 mm film, which gives it a much grittier look. More of a documentary feel. Later episodes shot on standard 35 mm film until moving to digital filming much, much later. You can see the difference between this pilot episode and the first standard episode, "Prescription for Death."
It's SO much more realistic.
It was like a ride-along
Just noticed this: the woman who plays Mrs. Halsey also played Carla Lowenstein in Indifference...
she acted the hell out of that role. she should have gotten an emmy for playing mrs. lowenstein.
@@christinecrites835 The actress' name is Marcia Jean Kurtz; Carla Lowenstein looked so much like Hedda Nussbaum (whose case, along with Joel Steinberg--they were charged with the death of their daughter Lisa was the inspiration for Indifference) that Law and Order aired a disclaimer (which is present in reruns) that it had nothing to do with the real-life case and pointed out the outcome of the real-life case...
And, yeah, Kurtz should have been nominated, at the very least...
Oh thank you! I knew she looked familiar from this show but I couldn’t remember which one.
Yes, yes I did notice.
Yeah. I noticed that too when it started, she looks totally different in this one; the other episode they used a bit of makeup to make her look more abused.
“Since when is a ham sandwich two seventy-five?”
This hits hard.
This cast had such excellent chemistry, it's what hooked us all. 😎
Never really watched ’old’ Law & Order, but I’m loving it lately. The smokey atmosphere and grimy textured gives it a relatable feeling.
2.75 for a sandwich is a steal nowadays 🤭
$2.75 for water lol
You can still find them for that price. But they aint good lol
@@jonragan8319 Quality Vs Monetary
Not at 1990 salaries.
Nurse " You can't smoke that here." Greevy " It's not lit."
Love the dialog in this show.
As an ophthalmology person, I particularly enjoyed the wannabe paramedic shining the flashlight at the fully closed eyes.
I think it was to get better light for identification, though.
@@themermaidstale5008 😂😂😂
He is eating a sandwich and drinking coffee whilst the guy is dying lol
Hes able to multitask
Not really much of a stretch, i remember a guy during the war who took a lit cigarette out of a dead insurgents mouth and continued to smoke it. Its amazing what one can do once desensitized to the harsh reality
The reverence you’re assuming goes away pretty quick if you wanna get anything done in 12 hours.
Guys are dying all the time. Man’s gotta eat.
I remember being so understaffed in ICU after returning from Vietnam that many times I’d bring a submarine sandwich, then split it with an RN as we sat on radiator in 4 bed ICU surgical ward. I’d check on a patient still holding the sandwich, then go back to sitting on radiator and we NEVER washed our hands! That was 50 yrs ago! So dumb!
Logan can frost my cookies any time
@YSV Rao thanks
How 'bout you let me...butter your muffin? 😎
@mike force you're just mad cause you're not pretty
@mike force ha don't make me laugh you stable not even a snowballs chance in the seventh inferno of hell
And you're just a jealous female who can't get a man to love you
force yes you are
The pilot episode being episode 6 must’ve confused the hell out of the audience back in 1990
Especially when DA Adam Schiff disappeared and was replaced by Roy Thinnes.
No wonder why I thought Greevey was looking a little trimmer than usual.
Same with Season 3 of ‘Miami Vice’-the episode ‘El Viejo’ was intended to be the season opener, but the running order got scrambled, and instead the opener we get is the episode ‘When Irish Eyes Are Crying’, which famously features the Daytona being blown up by arms dealer Eddie Kaye using it as an impromptu target for missile launcher demonstration purposes for Burnett and Cooper. Not really confusing to the unaware until the Daytona magically reappears one last time in ‘El Viejo’, which ended up being S3 EP6, well after Sonny had been given the Testarossa as the Daytona’s successor.
@Anthony Bertorelli the pilot episode came out in the Fall Of 1988 around September on CBS right after In The Heat Of The Night premiered back in the Spring around March.
The pilot episode came out in the Fall Of 1988 on CBS as a clip before NBC aired it and made it a series in the Fall Of 1990. The pilot episode was released again on October 30, 1990 for the 1st Season of Episode 6. You can tell that the pilot episode from 1990 was the same as the one from 1988. But the font type for the titles and the theme song for the intro, and credits were different. The font type for the titles from 1988 were in Impact and the one from 1990 which aired was like the one when it became a series.
This is a wonderful clip of the pilot shot in 1985. Notice anything about Greevey? Maybe 40lbs lighter? NBC didn't buy it, so it sat on the shelf for years. I think it was finally aired as episode 7 or 8 of the first season. I remember thinking, "Whoa, Greevey must've joined a gym...for a week, ha."
Hello! The pilot episode was finally aired on episode 6 which was intended for the first episode. Yeah, things did change in terms of camera quality and the character's appearance.
@op The pilot was NOT filmed in 1985. It was filmed in 1988
Yep....noticed that too...This was supposed to be the pilot, but it 6th episode of the season
Max Greevey was killed in second season premiere since his actor wanted off the show.
Ha ha
i love when the victims family argue with them while the cops try to get info and then go "youll catch them right?"
theyll have an easier time if you just give them the info they want with no fuss
These early episodes were gold!
Um, *yeah* ...Since when's a ham sandwich $2.75??? Last time I was in Manhattan, I got a pastrami on rye for no less than $15
How are you even willing to pay that much for a sandwich? That's just a sandwich for god's sake, where I live you can get one for a dollar, and for two dollars it would even be tasty - and that's in the most expensive district of the city!
@@sof_t_ Which district is that?
@@rustinstardust2094 lmao I'm not even in America, I live in Moscow
@@sof_t_ Lol - dude. No wonder! In Manhattan things are expensive...but also, NY is known for excellent pastrami. You can't go to NY and *not* get a pastrami sandwich. But hey, love to Russians. And why is it every Russian chick I see is beautiful??
This episode is old, inflation is out of control
The old camera work and gritty sound just scratches an itch in my brain. I love it, it looks so interesting.
I remember Roy Thines way back when he was on General Hospital in the early 60s. He was Jessie's husband.
Spoilers!!!
Love spoilers! Thanks!
Shame Dzundza left so soon. A flashback episode with Greevey and Cragen walking the streets together would have been sweet.
@BourgProductionsThat wasn't the only reason. He was under the impression that he was going to be the lead character, not part of an ensemble so he felt misled. Plus the second half of every episode focuses on the DA's office and Dzunda felt they were getting all the best scenes.
Some lessons learned in investigations or solving complex problems.
Keep an open mind.
Don't jump to conclusions.
Keep your partner from doing lesson one.
You can definitely tell this was made in 1988, two years before the rest of Series 1 begins and takes place. I also like to think it takes place at that time too. It makes the most sense as everybody looks so different. Max is skinny (or skinnier), Mike has longer (and better) hair, Alfred Wentworth as DA before Adam Schiff, etc. I really wish this was the pilot as it was intended as it only makes sense.
Better hair? His hair looked decent in the later episodes
I never said it didn't look good. I'm just saying I prefer his longer hairstyle here. It just looks better to me.
And Robinette doesn't have the flat top in this episode.
Didn't she plays the wife that got abuse but thinks the abuse is a sign of affection? And that she killed her daughter didi?
Yeah Carla she came back for the 11th episode of season 15
Thanks for the upload this is the original detectives that started it all. Isn't nothing like the original.
Yknow, if I had a husband and we were at a social event together, I wouldn't leave without him and I'd hope to heck that he wouldn't leave without me.
She wasn’t there that guy that was standing next to his wife was…
Everybody’s favorite bagman
The dialogue in Season One was amazing!
Wow, a Chevette in the background!! I keep forgetting that it started in 1990(?).....
..and the squad cars....
Paul Guilfoyle... Lt. Brass of CSI
That lady was also in other episodes of l&o. she was a scared wife of a husband that was abusing the children, i think if i remember the one kids name was dede. good actress
that's her?? I just watched that clip 5 minutes ago!
This must be the pilot!
It is, but ended up being aired at a later date.
What's wrong with frosted cookies?
Welcome Nia... Thanks Oscar
I am going to find a use for that.
What happens when you watch Law & Order shorts and buy dinosaur cookie cutters on Amazon in the same day.
I think I remember that the Councilman staged the crime to help his career. But I may be confusing it with a different episode.
I believe it was a mob hit because they were worried he would snitch
The way this episode was shot and produced really is reminiscent of The French Connection - gritty, almost doc-like.
2.75 for a ham sandwich in 1994? thats fricken robbery
1988
Greevey wasn't that fat yet.
Starving actor. Once he got a contract he could eat again (or afford to).
@@rnash999ha ha you're so mean
Wow, when was the last time you saw a phone booth?
shes so good on this show, any role
Everyone's Favorite Bagman
why are the older episodes so much better than whats on now?
better and more creative writers
Who just carries $500 cash on them?
a drug dealer
A crook of some kind. That's one of the hints in this case that this wasn't random street violence.
Me.
People with money?
This was the late eighties and early nineties. We didn't have debit cards, and you couldn't use credit cards everywhere. That money may have been ment to last a couple of weeks. Trust me, waiting in line for a bank teller was a pain before atms.
Love thus one ! One of my Favorites
Can you upload the full episode of Everybody's Favorite Bagman from 1988 and 1990 with the end credits.
I was wondering when did Logan join the NYPD?
He was in college in 1982, so I'd say 1983 at the earliest. This is set in 1989, or 1990.
looking at the cop car, their uniforms, grainy camera, 2.75 for a sandwich, WHAT YEAR IS THIS?!
Late 1980s.
😂😂 the answers to the victims family was so inappropriate, and i thought the newer detectives were rough
Two black guys... where have I heard that before?
The Sopranos, perhaps?
This shows really gives me description about the crime in America
You can't smoke dat in here...its not lit
1:36-1:38
@YSV Rao because i got confused on what thw noise was from that part
@@madison-Roccoa-Mason-drake old radios had a "squawk" button, could be used for Morse Code or to get attention. I'm guessing Logan used it over a bullhorn on the car to get Greevey's attention. or its a function on the siren
@@c3wichman thank you for telling me about this
Classic!
My god…when this was aired, Carson was still on!
If this episode seems a little "different", it was the pilot, despite being the 6th to air.
Is the shop owner Steve Guttenberg? 0.o
Yep that's what it did to me
Did the ME actually do a pupil dilation test while the guy's eyes are closed?
Sometimes even if the eyes are closed, you can get a "flinching" or squinting response if you shine a bright light onto them.
Don't think the ME would be onsite, it would be the paramedic. The ME would only be involved if deceased.
@@VC-Toronto true.. doesn't really matter either way though
$2.75 for a Sandwich 👀
Logan And Greevey Were The Best!
$2.75 for a ham sandwich? Jeez. That’s a _great_ bargain. Nowadays it’s probably going to be $10. But this was ‘90/‘91.
The only thing I didn't like about that season was the bad audio dubbing.
74 is brooklyn not harlem!
This guy is just too obvious.
so what happen with this case?
Is this the first episode ever lol WOW!
They don't make shows like this now days. Wish they did.

U notice t similarities between Greeves and columbo??
“The black kids” lol so lame they had to put that in the script
I wonder why they hired such tall actors

Would you let Logan frost your cookies?
Phags...
Chris Noth career over!
Huh?
6:20
What does "this really frost my cookies" means?
Basically means “this really annoys me”. Similar to the phrase “this really grinds my gears” - have you heard of that figure of speech/idiom?
2.75 for a sandwich?!
Chris Noth ❤️❤️❤️❤️
They really recycle actors, this is the crazy wife on the Lowenstein case
The most jarring for me is Bebe Neuwirth being a perp in the season one of SVU before becoming the asst. DA in Trial by Jury. Or Diane Neal’s role as a perp before also becoming an asst. DA for several seasons in SVU.
"We heard it was 2 black kids" not 2 kids but 2 black ones! Lol thats how you know it was a white lady who did it. 🤣
Well you have to describe what they look like
They went on to become recurring cast members on the Sopranos
