That's the downside to all the hi def, high tech, digital 4k Ultra cameras used today. It glosses and glams everything up so much that it's almost impossible to capture a classic "gritty" aesthetic like directors and cinematographers used to be able to achieve using traditional film cameras. Even worse is the decision to try and compensate for that by using less lighting and darker color palettes. Now when they try and acheive "grit", half the time they only accomplish creating scenes that are just difficult to see.

Law and Order was so unpolished back then, and the pilot was the most unpolished of them all, that's why it was so appealing. Hardly recognizable from the later seasons and SVU.
