  • Did Dwight Yoakam inspire one of country music's snarkiest hits?
    #DwightYoakam #DwightYoakamSongs #Opening Act
In 1990, Mary Chapin Carpenter performed her song "Opening Act" at the CMA Awards. The lyrics (seen below) painted an unflattering picture of a country music star, but was it based on a real experience.
Years later, Carpenter would explain who inspired "Opening Act" and admit that she really did not want to perform it at the CMA Awards. Many people thought she was referring to Dwight Yoakam because of the lyrics about balding and tight jeans.
    Do you think it's true?

Mary Chapin Carpenter, "Opening Act" Lyrics:
You don’t have a backstage room of your own / You just have feedback in your microphone / ‘Cause you don’t get a soundcheck / ‘Cause you’re not worth the time / You’re gonna have to face it / You’re no better than slime / You don’t know me, I’m the opening act.
There’s a cold cut platter and beer for the crew / Don’t get the impression that there’s any for you / ‘Cause you’re at the bottom of the pecking order / Even the bouncer at the door comes before you / You don’t know me, I’m the opening act.
The right attitude will get me such a long way / An optimistic view will make it OK / When some fool in the front row yells, You Suck / I’ll thank him profusely and get ready to duck / I don’t have a hit in the Billboard charts / I don’t have a limousine that stretches three blocks /Ready to take me from door to door / Just like that asshole I’m opening for / He doesn’t know me, I’m his opening act.
Now I’m not going bald, so I don’t wear a hat / Tight jeans don’t fit me, I’m a little too fat / I can’t sing like a frog blowing farts through his nose / So I don’t expect you’ll like me, but that’s how it goes / Now for 37 minutes I sang out my heart / I was so damn nervous I just wanted to barf / This is my career, and I’m paying my dues / If I ever get rich and famous, I’ll guess I’ll be an asshole too / ‘Till then, you don’t know me, I’m the opening act.

I wasn't born yet when Mary performed it, but I can tell by reading the last verse, and I love Dwight!

At least she learned how to treat her Opening Act, I saw her in concert with Radney Foster and she came out and did backup vocals on his song "Nobody Wins".

Great song, MCC! It's definitely about Dwight Yoakam. A band I managed opened for Dwight years ago, and Dwight and his road crew were just miserable to us. No sound check, no respect, just complete and total jerks. They didn't even let us load our gear onto the stage until the doors were open and the audience was already walking in. One thing that made us all laugh, though, was that his band and crew all called Dwight "Elvis" behind his back.

I worked at a country music station at the time, and the on-air crew pretty much all agreed it was about him-including our morning drive jock, who had worked at the Palomino Club in LA and had met him several times. His experience with Yoakam when fans weren't there mirrors yours.
One clue that wasn't mentioned in the video is "I don't have a limousine that stretches three blocks", a year after he had a hit with "Long White Cadillac."

sure it sounds like him but it sounds like a lot of country singers, mentions a hat, tight jeans, and nasal singing. but that fits a lot of singers actually. that's kind of the cliche of a typical country singer
