You really have to check out the studio version of "Layla" and maybe also "Bell Bottom blues" from the album "Layla and other associated love songs" by "Derek and the Dominos" 13:22 (Clapton's band name from the late 60s/early 70s). Heck, check out the whole album. It's all great blues rock. The studio version of Layla is pure rock and clearly accentuates his painful yearning for his friend George Harrison's then wife, Patti. Clapton went acoustic and more mellow with the song Layla, as he got older. 🙂
I believe Layla is a woman named Patty Harrison, the wife of George Harrison. Patty left George, who wrote several beautiful songs about her while still with the Beatles. Patty married Clapton, but his chronic heroine abuse and other private issues ended their marriage. Eric got straight and helped many other addicts throughout his life. His beautiful tribute to his baby son, who died in a terrible accident, is a fantastic piece of music. It's called Tears in Heaven. Peace
How about his tribute to other people’s children by being so militantly anti-COVID vaccine? Maybe some parents will listen to his medical advice (he is an art school dropout after all), lose their child to COVID (still circulating) and get inspired to write the next ‘Tears in Heaven.’
This is the slowed down, acoustic version... you should check out his original version. He wrote this about Patty Boyd, who was married to George Harrison at the time. She later left Harrison for Clapton... but she wasn't treated any better and they would also divorce. Patty has probably had more songs written about her than any other woman. 💙
You owe it to yourself to go back and listen to the original. This version is cool but it's an old man telling a story from long ago. The original is a young man still burning from being in love with his best friend's wife (and has the great Duane Allman playing). Just look up Derek and the Dominoes - Layla. SPOILER; He ends up with the girl
This song was inspired by his wife and model Patti Boyd, who he also wrote Wonderful Tonight and Bell Bottom Blues about. Patti was previously married to George Harrison of the Beattles, who was also one of Eric's best friends. Yes there was a big scandal. She also inspired several songs that Harrison wrote.
Jenny Boyd, Patty's sister also had several songs written about her. Donovan wrote Jennifer Juniper about her after she overdosed and almost died in the bathroom. She was married to Mick Fleetwood.
This is the unplugged version and it's beautiful in it's own right. Some have recommended checking the album version and i agree. It'll demonstrate how songs change over the years. I suggest doing Cream's version of Crossroads. Eric is the guitarist in that song.
I don't get medical information from my guitar legends.🎉 He's a favorite of mine, but he's had some tragedies that would break your heart. The rock version of this hits hards.
It’s up to ourselves to inform ourselves of truths, which takes smarts and discipline. We certainly don’t need some “minister of truth” saying what is and isn’t. Informed consent can only work if the patient knows their stuff prior to entering docs office.
@mumbles215 I respect your confidence in your ability to make medical decisions with such confidence. Doctor's are not gods, but I found over a twelve year period with my chronically ill husband, that medicine is a field that's difficult to brush-up on when you're facing a life or death battle with a complex disease like Leukemia. I fought ferociously for my husband, but I needed doctors and researchers to help us with a very intense battle. We won for 12 years but lost the final battle when his home health care worker refused to wear a mask. I don't blame her or the hospital staff for Charlie's final three weeks, alone in a hospital where he finally died. Tonight, four years later, you sound pompous and ill- informed. I'm sure that I'm mistaken. Peace and good health to you and those you love.
The original version with Derek and the Dominos (Clapton and Duane Allman on guitar) is best IMO. Amazing slide guitar and mush more passionate version.
"Tears in Heaven" is the story of his feeling over the loss of his little boy. It will bring tears. A really good cover will give respect to the original and offer something new, something of the new performer too.
Eric Clapton was huge in the career of the Bee Gees. They had experienced quite a long dry spell and Eric suggested they go to Florida and record at the Criteria Studio and in 1970 they did just that and the magic happened. Jive Talkin, Nights On Broadway, Fanny Be Tender With My Love and so many more great songs were born. I'm forever grateful.
I had the great joy and honour to see Eric play live for the first time (I'm 68, he is a huge part of my musical life) just over a week ago. It was like listening to a Rolls Royce instead of a Skoda. Genius. Best ever? There are many possible candidates for that accolade. However what we can confidently say is that when Eric played with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, you would never ever hear anything better, because 3 better guitarists don't exist and have never existed.
Between this version and his earlier versions are like 2 total different songs. To me he reinvented his own song. I really like his different versions. In Patty Boyde's book, when she was with Clapton, he was so messed up with drugs and alcohol that he should have made it. We would have lost out on so much music if hadn't gotten clean and sober!
I wonder, would Eric Clapton ever play live any song the same way twice? He seems so organic when he plays…it’s like a reflection of his talent, his age, his mood maybe where he’s playing or what time of the day it is? 😂
I love me some slow hand Eric Clapton. Seen him free after hurricane Katrina in New Orleans I've listen to him my whole life. The band Cream, White Room was the first one I remember.WOW!I was 3 😁 and Crossroads and He's awesome 🎸 player and close to BB King ❤❤
I admire musicians that can still play and sing are still entertaining in their 60s and 70s.They could just kick back and enjoy life and not ever worry about money. They just have performing in their blood.
His fast version of this song was a big hit before he came out with this short version. I like them both very much. The story behind it is sad to me. Patti Harrison, George’s wife, left George for his good friend, Eric. Things didn’t work out her Patti and Eric either. But George and Eric remained friends.
I'm with you about Eric being a real stand-up man. It's such a shame that our society won't listen to people who actually navigate real pain and trouble, as opposed to fakes and show offs.
I love Eric Clapton, and yes this is his song. The original was not laid back and jazzy, but a screaming guitar rock song. My favorite song of Eric Clapton's is, Bell Bottom Blues, which is from back when He was Deric and the Dominos as was Layla. Bell Bottom Blues was about the same woman. Layla was a girlfriend who was passed back and forth between Eric Clapton and one of the Beatles, I forget who. Here is one you should definitely take in. The song is, Poor Elijah - Delaney & Bonnie w/ a younger Eric Clapton ua-cam.com/video/AatumCGNAM8/v-deo.htmlsi=XIPH7Gt1vwlr5Djq
Eric Clapton is 79 years old now and was in his first band at the age of 17. He started out amazing and has only aged like wine. Maybe because he doesn't still have long hair and has to strut across the stage, but he can carry this into the present and is still worth giving your attention to.
I love this version, but the electric guitar version is very very different. Eric Clapton is a true legend, an honest all time legend! He is known through 50-60 years of the music industry as one of the absolute best! He has been at the forefront of so many music innovations, they’re uncountable!
This is Eric doing an acoustic version of Layla which he did in 1970. This is a different acoustic version then did in 1993. And yes, this song was written about Patty Harrison wife of George Harrison of the Beatles, and how he wanted her but you don't go after the wife of a Beatle. She eventually left George and married Clapton.
The difference between sampling and doing a cover is that sampling is usually uncredited, whereas if you do a cover, the people who wrote the music and lyrics are fully credited with having done so. The lack of credit given is why people dislike sampling, not the sampling itself.
When a track is covered the original song writer will still be credited and will still get their share of the royalties. Sampling ... not always, and therefore can be more controversial.
One of the founders of country music, Roy Acuff had a hit song called Birmingham Jail. I was singing it one day and realized the melody was on top of old smokey.
Dude. Listening to your content about all these songs has been enlightening. I grew up listening to a lot of the rock and country you're reacting to and it just WAS. I never really looked for live versions or wondered what the song was about very often. Just enjoyed the jams. You've got me going back thru my life long catalog of favorites critically and paying closer attention.
The Album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was written to win the love of his best friend’s wife away from her husband. It is one of the most emotionally fueled collections of songs ever. Clapton’s guitar work on those pieces did their intended job, ended his close friendship with George Harrison and also ended Harrison’s marriage. Rock and Roll has some strange powers sometimes.
There’s a video where Eric Clapton first plays tears in Heaven live. Which if you weren’t aware, is about his little son who fell to his death out of a window. So he just reaches over and grabs his guitar. No auto tune, no lip syncing, and delivers this beautiful, emotional masterpiece. It’s a MUST WATCH! I’m getting chills just typing about it
Layla's a very strong memory of mine, leaving school late after my guitar lesson, a mate called me into the main hall where he'd been setting everything up for the 6th form Christmas disco later that night. He asked me to sit on a chair in the middle of the massive space and check out the sound system. What song is it? I asked, Oh, a new Clapton one. Calling himself Dereck and the Dominoes, but it's Clapton really. Two seconds later and that famous riff is blasting out sooo loud. What a literally unforgettable experience.
In the 60’s, graffiti stating “Clapton is god” was seen all over Englands subways and walls, all because of his guitar brilliance. He also has a song called “Tears in heaven” and in relation to the time his son was killed falling from a multistorted window, Beautiful.
Originally done early 70's, by Derek and the Domino's of which Clapton was a member. You should check the original version with the group. Much more on the rock side. ❤
Loving your reactions to old school rock. I'm 55 now but had much older brothers and sisters so was brought up and a strange mix of motown, northern soul, rock and metal.. although I listen to all genre's.. rock and metal stuck firmly .. have you considered reacting to Uriah Heep.. Come Away Melinda is imo their best track. Also.. Stealin', July Morning, Gypsy, Easy Livin', The Wizard, Look at Yourself are all awesome.. I think you'd like them. Keep up the fantastic content.. love it 🤘
Layla , he recorded this under the name of Derrick and the Domino’s,The full electric version is better. Also great guitar players please checkout Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple.
He wrote it for Pattie Boyd, who was married to George Harrison of The Beatles & fell in love with her after going to their home. Pattie got a part & met George while filming A Hard Days Night! Saw it at 6 as we 4 kids (one 12) walked to the cinema 4 blocks away. Unique b&w movie, teens screaming..
The story of this song is crazy. Its just one of many songs both he and George Harrison wrote about Patti Boyd. I wont spoil it because theres a lot to unpack but its worth diving into.
In regard to Santana, 1969 Woodstock performance of Soul Sacrifice and later, the Smooth video, featuring Rob Thomas. Both so worth the watch and listen.
This show I believe was at the Royal Albert Hall. This is essentially a cover of the original rock version of this song. Of course he’s covering his own song, but doing it in a different tempo and scaled back to an acoustic version.✌🏼😎🇺🇸
This is a good version of "layla" very melancholy (he did lose his girl)...... check out the "Layla" live at Madison square garden's.... there is where you FEEL the passion of the song!! other greats are Eric GAles with Joe Bonamassa "john henry" is an epic guitar battle!!! , Santana- "black magic women"....... Gary moore--"the messiah will come" or "i'll sing the blues for you", Joe bonamassa with Beth Hart "I'd rather go blind--will melt your face.....lets go 40.....
You need to react the real original Rock version of the song from the 70s it kicks butt. In the 70s Eric was in group Derek and the Dominos when he first sang this Song that he wrote as a real rocking tune this is the acoustic version from the 90s MTV Unpluged Show. Also listen to Eric singing to the song (I Shot the Sheriff) a remake of Bob Marley's hit song.
You have to hear the original layla it's a fast version! About George Harrison's wife who he tried to woo away.. also Wonderful Tonight is about her. You may not know the story about Tears in Heaven his young son connor died he fell out of a high rise window very sad.
Eric Clapton is legendary and Layla is one of his biggest hits. I am so happy to see rap & hip-hop fans opening their minds to other music genres. Misheard lyrics ("mondegreens') are ubiquitous - every time I hear Madonna sing "San Pedro" I'd swear she's singing "Last night I dreamt of some bagels".
Clapton reinvented his own song when he did that 2nd version of Layla. The original was most definitely a banger, but I love the calmer version, too. Both are great for different reasons. As for Clapton's 💉 injury story, it not only is true, but he was hospitalized & almost died. In addition, Van Morrison joined Clapton in an offensive against the mandates, etc. Total respect for both guys.
Clapton turned 79 at the end of March. This is the thrd version of Layla I have heard. The original, hard, hard rock. Then in 1992 there was an almost elevator music ballad that he created. This one fits neatly in between... a pop rock ballad with attitude. Clapton is one of the original guitar heroes, having appeared with a handful of bands in the 60's and 70's before striking out on his own.
He is alive. He's a living legend.
Eric Clapton is a legend
You really have to check out the studio version of "Layla" and maybe also "Bell Bottom blues" from the album "Layla and other associated love songs" by "Derek and the Dominos" 13:22 (Clapton's band name from the late 60s/early 70s). Clapton went acoustic and more mellow with the song Layla, as he got older. 🙂
Yes, the studio version has a much faster, rock tempo.
I believe Layla is a woman named Patty Harrison, the wife of George Harrison. Patty left George, who wrote several beautiful songs about her while still with the Beatles. His beautiful tribute to his baby son, who died in a terrible accident, is a fantastic piece of music. It's called Tears in Heaven. Peace
George and Patty I think we're still together when this song came out.
Yep sure is
How about his tribute to other people’s children by being so militantly anti-COVID vaccine? Maybe some parents will listen to his medical advice (he is an art school dropout after all), lose their child to COVID (still circulating) and get inspired to write the next ‘Tears in Heaven.’
I'll never be able to hear Tears In Heaven without crying.
This is the acoustic guitar version. You need to hear the original. They are very different.
Listen to tears in heaven by Eric Clapton
Definitely tear jerker that song gets me every time knowing the story behind the song of the passing of his young son
Don't get me wrong, the acoustic version is nice, but the original with the electric guitar hits differently!!!!
This comes across more as a lullaby.
The Original has more emotion than any one song should be able to hold.
"Hits differently" is putting it mildly! 😄
And it has that fire slide guitar with Duane Allman. A totally different vibe from this. The original is my all-time favorite song.
Both versions are amazing but for different reasons.
You gotta check out Cream. Clapton was the lead guitarist, Cream is sometimes called the first "super group".
His live electric version is legendary.
BP was talking about cover songs in the intro, and a very strange way this is essentially Eric Clapton doing a cover of his own song.
His original version in the early 70's was amazing. Derek and the Dominoes.
I so appreciate this slowed down acoustic version. Absolutely mesmerizing. That said? I prefer the original rocker version he started with.
That means she's for the streets!
I love Eric Clapton. Awesome artist and great guitar player. Love this song! Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤❤
This was a remix of his song for the MTV series Unplugged. It’s almost a different song. The original was a pure rocker.
This isn't the unplugged version as that is my favorite version. He was far younger when he did that unplugged set. Great rendition at any rate.
@@leonardwashington6456 I understand this is a different time but the MTV version was the first time he slowed it down as an acoustical version.
He is recognized as one of the best guitar players ever. Nick name Slow Hand.
You owe it to yourself to go back and listen to the original. This version is cool but it's an old man telling a story from long ago. The original is a young man still burning from being in love with his best friend's wife (and has the great Duane Allman playing). Just look up Derek and the Dominoes - Layla. SPOILER; He ends up with the girl
..and then leaves her..
Totally true
It doesn't matter if you sample or cover. What is important is giving credit.
Yes! Give the original artist their credit
It’s about Eric C’s love for George Harrison’s wife, Patti Boyd. It’s quite a story and George H wrote Something about her.
I love Eric Clapton... You Look Wonderful Tonight!!
She must've been some lady! 🤣🤣
George went to their wedding, with Paul McCartney and Ringo. . . . .
@@wesalker3479 It was a true show of love and friendship on the side of both Clapton and Harrison in my opinion.
George met Patty when The Beatles were filming "A Hard Day's Night". She played one of the fans that was on the train with them.
Disagree! It still peeves me-I’m an RN, and misinformation is a HUGE problem in today’s world. We fight it all. The. Time.
This is great, but the original is way better! If u end up checking out more by him, one of my favorite songs is Change the world! ❤
The original version with Derek and the Dominos (Clapton and Duane Allman on guitar) is best IMO. Amazing slide guitar and mush more passionate version.
You with your heart ripped out? Tears in Heaven.
🙌💯 Cane here to say this
Definitely you need to check out Tears in Heaven. Grab the extra large box of Kleenex.
"Tears in Heaven" is the story of his feeling over the loss of his little boy. It will bring tears.
A really good cover will give respect to the original and offer something new, something of the new performer too.
Eric Clapton was huge in the career of the Bee Gees. Legend, he is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 3 times. Part of the Yard Birds and Cream and as a singer/song writer.
I love this slow version of Layla , if you liked this one check out the original Layla by Eric Clapton & band from 1969🔥👍🔥🔥
Now you really need to check out the original "Layla" when Eric was with Derek and the Dominoes. Totally different vibe!!
Yes, a hero for speaking out! Van Morrisson too! Love them both!
Both of them are awesome musicians AND human beings which is more than I can say for the creators of Covid 19 and its vaccines!
Love me some Eric Clapton ❣️❣️❣️
I had the great joy and honour to see Eric play live for the first time (I'm 68, he is a huge part of my musical life) just over a week ago. It was like listening to a Rolls Royce instead of a Skoda. Genius. Best ever? There are many possible candidates for that accolade. However what we can confidently say is that when Eric played with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, you would never ever hear anything better, because 3 better guitarists don't exist and have never existed.
This is amazing

He seems so organic when he plays…it’s like a reflection of his talent, his age, his mood maybe where he’s playing or what time of the day it is? 😂
I love me some slow hand Eric Clapton. Seen him free after hurricane Katrina in New Orleans I've listen to him my whole life. The band Cream, White Room was the first one I remember.WOW!I was 3 😁 and Crossroads and He's awesome 🎸 player and close to BB King ❤❤

Best place in the world is where. ERIC CLAPTON is playing. 💯🎵🔥👊
His fast version of this song was a big hit before he came out with this short version. I like them both very much. The story behind it is sad to me. Patti Harrison, George’s wife, left George for his good friend, Eric.
Things didn’t work out her Patti and Eric either. But George and Eric remained friends.
As others have mentioned, PLEASE check out the studio version. Completely different songs, same lyrics.
I'm with you about Eric being a real stand-up man. It's such a shame that our society won't listen to people who actually navigate real pain and trouble, as opposed to fakes and show offs.
Check out “Layla” by Dereck and the Dominos. It’s still Eric Clapton but, a whole different vibe. Done very early in ECs career.
I love Eric Clapton, and yes this is his song. The original was not laid back and jazzy, but a screaming guitar rock song. The audio of this is so much better. It's beautiful and his rock version is exhilarating!
I agree.....its a beautiful song, so laid back, soft, casual, jazzy and a bit bluesy too.
One of the best acoustic guitar solos of all time!
You need to listen to him do this with Derek and the Dominoes.
Eric Clapton is 79 years old now and was in his first band at the age of 17. He started out amazing and has only aged like wine. Maybe because he doesn't still have long hair and has to strut across the stage, but he can carry this into the present and is still worth giving your attention to.

This version doesn’t hold a candle to his unplugged performance. He absolutely rips that guitar apart.
My favorite guitar playing by Eric Clapton is for the Phil Collins song "I wish it would rain down"
Check his song Tears In Heaven he wrote after his son died falling out of his apartment window, he was in about eight other bands also
I think the “one thing” 2020 made me appreciate Eric Clapton even more! Thank you for the awesome reaction!
The difference between sampling and doing a cover is that sampling is usually uncredited, whereas if you do a cover, the people who wrote the music and lyrics are fully credited with having done so. The lack of credit given is why people dislike sampling, not the sampling itself.
Yeah, the original is a total rock song. Hard.
If you like Eric Clapton “Tears in heaven” is a must. Based on his grief over his son’s death. Heartbreakingly beautiful.
When a track is covered the original song writer will still be credited and will still get their share of the royalties. Sampling ... not always, and therefore can be more controversial.
About the "V" you're right. You're smart guy. Crazy that we have to deal with self-censorship.
@GuitarPlayersFun, yep totally agree!
One of the founders of country music, Roy Acuff had a hit song called Birmingham Jail. I was singing it one day and realized the melody was on top of old smokey.

No. This is at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
I love the original hit Layla by Eric Clapton it was a great song , by him in Derek & the dominos. Love him in the group Cream 🇬🇧
Clapton has saved more Lives than that thing could ever hope to. Crossroads , rehab Antigua...
2014, far and middle east leg of Eric Clapton's tour. Someone made a documentary out of it called Planes, Trains and Eric
check out claptons wonderful tonight
Eric plays in Phil Collins' video Let It Rain Down, fantastic song 😁
I listened to his music when I was young! All of his bands were cool, and he's still cool with these people, too!! 💋💋💋😻😻😻🍹🍹👵🐺🖖🌵
In the 70s Eric was in group Derek and the Dominos when he first sang this
Song that he wrote as a real rocking tune this is the acoustic version from the 90s MTV Unpluged Show.
Eric Clapton is an icon. Listen to Tears in Heaven. Have your tissues ready. Love your reaction!
Jeff Beck is a friend and peer of Eric Clapton and they have played together on stage.
Clapton writes a lot of his own material but does a lot of old blues covers. This is beautiful but the original is an unbelievable piece of music.
The studio original is the BOMB!! That's the one who really should have reacted to.
His song Old Love performed live at Madison Square ; amazing song and guitar work from Eric
Eric plays this song in several ways this is the slow version and he goes all the way up to 15 now that's a banger
I got to see Eric Clayton with Blind Faith many years ago and also got to see him with Mark knopfler. He is soooo good.
The song has really changed from when it was 1st put out. I loved the original version for decades
Eric is a man with principles and it appears that you are too. You stand above the level of your pears.
I think that it's the ultimate compliment to the original artist
