  • The seventies was a great time to be alive with possibly and collectively the best music of any other decade ever. Even some bands we associate with the 60s made their best music in the 70s (play Beatles/bob Dylan/or dead in the 70s)
Both layman and critics alike still heap high praises on bands like LEd Zeppelin, the who, also British, who else? The doors, even the BeeGees.
But what about those bands everybody loves to hate. They may not really be so bad, but for whatever reason…. Haters gonna hate.
I’m your host - Nostalgic Nick - and today we’re highlighting some of the worst bands of the 1970’s. Now Don’t go breaking my heart! Please give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel so you never miss an episode! Now Let’s take a “Walk on the Wild Side” to see who was the worst musical group of the seventies.
Warning: We’re all friends here and musical tastes of course vary. If you think we missed a real stinker from the 70s, please add them in the comments. And, if you think we include someone who shouldn’t be on this list, give me the song that will change my mind! I’m always looking for new, old music. Now let’s dance.

Amen to that! to me all music genres have nose dived since the late 70s, main reason it has become to corporate, to homogenized and to little artist driven. It peaked in the mid 70s, and by the 90s has gotten worse like a rocket sled on rails to the musical wasteland of today.

How Genesis could be on a list of the "Top 10 Most HATED 1970s Bands" is beyond me, especially for that decade when they were at their best. With the departures of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, they "sold out" in the 80s but were still better than a lot of bands.

Love them or hate them, you have to respect what Genesis did. Mastering quite different music styles takes guts and talent. How many other bands went from Prog to New Wave to Synth Pop to Space Rock and did it successfully? Queen and Rush are two others I can think of who adapted to the music styles of the day and remained successful, but there aren't many who did it as well as Genesis. And don't forget FIVE of the members of Genesis also had successful solo careers. How many other bands can say that?

After they left what remained of the band reinvented themselves into a far more radio friendly pop-orientated band with Phil Collins on vocals. Sadly, most people under the age of 40 will have never heard Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Selling England by the Pound etc. and they only think of Genesis in their second incarnation. Rupert Holmes may have been a solo singer, but he was in a 1970's band. That band was The Buoys from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and their big hit was 1971's "Timothy", which was controversial for being about cannibalism. Disc jockeys, of course jumped all over the song and played it with promotional glee.
The real reason for Daryl Dragon & Toni Tenille's divorce was that Daryl ("The Captain") was suffering from neurelogical disease (he's had the disease since he was a child and it affected his eyes, making him stare with bug eyes whenever he was photographed without dark glasses. As a result, The Captain was very camera shy, which is why he rarely smiled, and wanted to mainly wear dark glasses in front of photographers.) The Captain was so sick by 2015, he had to go into hospice in an assisted living apartment, and it was considered a liability with many medical bills, so the couple agreed to divorce so The Captain could retire in solitude and die. He finally passed away in 2018. Toni Tenille was by The Captain's side when he died. The Captain had two sons who played in the comedy punk rock band, The Surf Punks, who were best known for their comedy surf song "My Beach" in 1980.
Edison Lighthouse was sometimes confused with Canada's band, Lighthouse, a band who hit in 1971 with "One Fine Morning" and "Sunny Days". While Lighthouse was considered a real working band since 1968, Edison Lighthouse was considered a studio group who had one bubblegum pop hit in the US, and were compared with groups like The 1910 Fruitgum Company and Crazy Elephant.
While many rock critics disliked Phil Collins over the years for leading Genesis during their hit period phase in the late 70's and 1980's, they loved Peter Gabriel, especially after he left Genesis for a solo career. "So" from 1985 is still considered a classic album from the 80's and the song "Sledgehammer" is considered technically innovative for it's video effects at the time. "Shock The monkey" from 1982 is a pretty good catchy pop song as well.
I'm surprised KISS isn't on this list. They were loved by the fans, but loathed by the music critics. Gene Simmons could be a bit of an asshole at times. Also missing is Ted Nugent, who is also a nasty SOB when he wants to be, especially in his right wing pro-gun phase, which he remains to this day.
