I dont think its about beeing lazy, GW is just pushing to much product on the market. All the creatives working for GW are under high pressure to deliver stuff and at some point the quality will start to decline

Painting team doesnt talk with modelling team (spyrers were made with the idea of them getting the original bright colours for example, as the guy that made the models said in an instagram post, and then the painting team did them in the green-ish colours making people think they're just more van saar) The codex lore team doesnt talk with book lore writers (lions book vs DA codex) It's a mess

theyre building a new factory tho, huge chunks of their range are out of stock on the website and theyve just had to manufacture a million things for aos. so they probably took everything that needed significant new models and pushed it back to later in the edition.

It should have been a Deathwatch or Grey Knights range refresh. Grey Knights need literally two plastic kits to overhaul 95% of their entire roster. Would've been really easy.
Yes. As a fellow DW player I am very sad. I was hoping that may e we whould get a new DW veterans kit (maybe even for killteam or somthing with rules in 40k so that we can have that detail) and may e a new watchmaster
Would've been cool to see the Deathwatch keepers on the tabletop. With enough time and effort Deathwatch would've been awesome, but time and effort are too much for GW.
So many points to talk about in your video, and I agree with A LOT of them. The fact that the Coteaz model went through, probably, several rounds of checks before being approved points to people just being asleep at the wheel, especially management. The reuse and lack of new lore can be put down to the new three year edition cycle that GW has adopted. All of this in order to better serve their shareholders. If you’re unhappy, folks, vote with your wallet. Don’t buy all new shit just because it’s new.
@@MythicSton3 That's not going to do a thing. The real issue with SM is that GW has been stuck on 4's for decades. They need to up the S and T of all models in the range. ALL bolt weapons need at least +1S and -1AP more than they have (Chaos SM too) and the melee S needs at least +1 as well (S5 chainswords, S6 power weapons, S10 power fists, etc.)
@@JimH. Sure, and then up the points massively while you're at it. Doing all the things you're asking for at the current points cost would catapult SM to a 65%+ winrate instantly. Chainswords wounding almost all transports across the game on 5s is ridiculous, and upping the toughness to 5 across the board would invalidate like 70% of the weapon options of anything that isn't a marine.
I’m sure we’ll all sing a different tune when Emp’s Children drop, but I agree GW has been lackluster lately. They’re playing it too safe, but we pay them too much for them to play it safe.
I just hope they don't go in the nobby sound guns route for noise marines. I could stand to see a bit more of the mohawks and musical instruments. Give us some wicked fun heavy metal album cover Chaos again.
I fear for it. World eaters was OK-ish. I felt it also didn't compare to art (they have normal faces...). If they make slaanesh to soft and not about lust/crazyness/... it will be dull.
My biggest concern with this book is that it feels like a stop-gap book before squatting. I am weary to encourage anyone to start this army. Big Beasts of Chaos energy all over it.
They could have gone crazy with the Inquisitor / agents stuff. Full new range, refresh old inquisitors , new weird looking units ext. Na just repeat old units with one new unit who is worse than the old model in every way. I was ready to drop a tone of money if each set was new, now im just gonna take that money elsewhere.
Reused cover art, reused lore sections in codices, single model codex releases. No new codex roadmap in what… 9 months. Yeah, it’s lazy. They’re worried 40K would steal the AOS 4th Ed hype, so I bet we’ll see better releases as we get closer to fall/christmas.
Honestly AOS lore has bin better than 40k lore for a while sea elves fun lore, beastmen was fun bone reaper has some good grim lore too. But tbh don't play gws stuff any more more into conquest and firefight

I think a big part of it is the 3 year cycle they're insisting on. It's not giving them enough time to do a proper job. They need to slow down & finish things before moving on
That's why I've switched to a lot to the specialist games. They have much longer timetables. Yeah, it might be awhile between new releases. But I'm actually happy when they do. Unlike 40k
I can't remember where i saw this comment but i feel it sums up a lot of my feelings for almost all the new releases for 40k and AOS as well as other games. "It is next to impossible to feel excited for a New Codex/Army Book especially when we know they are going to be errated almost immediately and a single Model" and a single model no matter how nice a sculpt such as Genestealer Cults is all we are getting
I mean to be honest you can tell there is a current level of corporate disfunction within GW that hasnt been seen before, in the past its been rough but we are in new territory.
I imagine that GW is going through massive groupthink. This model got presented and no one has the balls to say 'that's shit!'. Corporate culture on the retail side sounds Orwellian enough, that I'm definitely starting to believe it's also spread to the design end. I hope the designers find it feasible to jump ship or take lead on the business side, because the MBAs who are pushing out underwhelming box after underwhelming box are going to squander the growth.
Take off the thunder hammer, inquisitor seals and bolt pistol and the new Coteaz looks like a Stormcast Eternal. In fact, I'd say he looks more like a stormcast who someone kitbashed than he does an actual 40k model.
Imperial agents is one of the most unexplored and underrated factions in all the game. They have so many different facets and angles you could approach it from . This faction would be hugely popular if it got the attention it needed
Lazy is exactly right. 40k just prints money, why put effort into it? The level of releases and new models for AoS is wild, they're beautiful. 40k (and especially 30k) are just phoned in. Still missing so many basic infantry kits for 30k and it's been years.
There’s a problem in the U.S. that CEOs and their leadership want employees to “make it better” and then don’t provide any direction. Sad to see it infiltrating GW TOO.
I don't know if I would say they are lazy. But I would argue that we are getting disappointing releases because the team are spreading themselves too thin. When I started the Hobby as a kid, they had Fantasy, 40K, MESBG and Bloodbowl. I took a break and when I retuned. they had AoS, 40K, MESBG, Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest & Horus Heresy. Since I started up again, we also now have Kill Team, Legions Imperialis, Warcry, Old Worlds and Underworlds. That's 4 to 12 games since I started. It's tripled. It seems with each new game, there is less of the rest. Maybe not, but it seems that way and so we get more half arsed releases because they don't have time to make models at the same rate they could before. They are overstretched.
I think we missed the point that a chapter specific space marine list now has the opportunity to buy 4 codices to field an army. 1 generic marines, 1 chapter specific marines, 1 imperial knights, 1 agents of imperium. 240$ of books to field an army and flipping through 4 codices. I can't wait!
As a Deathwatch player, I can't help but agree. One actually new model for the Agents is an embarrassment. The Ordos Xenos box is more Kill Team than Inquisition. It's fucking shocking. This on top of a gutting of the Deathwatch rules is beyond lazy.
10th edition was the best edition because it got me into Horus Heresy which has been so much fun. I can't ever see myself going back to 40k ever again at this point.

Fully agreed there mate. Just as I said yesterday, this is really strange for such a massive company. When you look at the guys who make excellent 3rd party models, they are usually from one to few guys, they make more releases than gw on monthly bases. There is no excuse. They seem like they're incapable to run their own shop. Warhammer + is a great example. Now I love warhammer 40k. It is something I enjoy with my friends very much. I will continue to look onward for brighter days but something needs to happen. Lion came out more than a year ago and 0 lore has come out about him since. I can't understand how is it possible that they haven't capitalized on that.
I suspect that GW wanted to keep Coteaz on a certain sized sprue so design choices were made. Though how they managed to make literally every part of the model objectively worse (or at the very least more plain) is beyond me. If you compare the old model, Each individual part is lessened. Shoulder pads, fur mantle, knees, chest plate… all made simpler or less ornate.
first born marines always felt more... flavorful. Like even the basic tactical squad felt like they had more character compared to the new intercessors.
Primaris of each armor type are the same model reposed. Since people love them GW understood that they can lower the effort on anything they do... And this whole edition is just pleasing the competitive crowd which is killing the hobby aspect of the game. Everything is being set up to be able to quickly iterate for the matched play balance. Simplifications, unit cuts,... and with this as main focus of the work the lore itself and its implementation into the game is just an afterthought.
Val is literally the voice of reason in 40k. The new lazy coteaz mini just seems to have been created to sell the box to move the old stock included in the box 😅 They should have at least waited for new greyknights before releasing these sets.
The Coteaz model is like half an inch taller than the Grey Knight Terminators he's standing next to in the box art. It's actually a bit funny how much Gdubs doesn't even pretend to care about certain factions.
I doubt it. To say AoS doesn't sell anywhere near as good as 40K is an understatement, however if you turn out to be correct I wouldn't be surprised. Nobody's knows why GW does the things it does. Not even GW

I tried to come back to the game at the end of 9th/beginning of 10th and have been nothing but disappointed. I've started playing AoS simply because that team deserves my money with the amount of actual effort they've put into it
I'm really shocked that they didn't add the Scions/ Stormtroopers to that book. I feel like that was a huge miss. I would have been the number one customer for this book if it did it

Ever since Primaris Space Marines debuted I dreamt of various conversions or a total revamped model of Inquisitor Coteaz.. bruv, my inner child is actually SO sad to see this. My nostalgia is SO crushed at the lack of.. everything, regarding the result of the new model and I am grateful you said what you said and addressed it how you did.
I gotta say, I've played 40k for 24 years and I've recently stepped into Age of Sigmar with Seraphon, Ironjawz and Skaven and man I'm loving the models and simplicity of the game. I'll always be more drawn to 40k, but loving the different feel and models at the mo
I'm relatively early into my venture into the hobby. I'm enjoying the head first dive I've taken into the lore, getting some minis and taking a crack at getting paint on plastic. I see it from your perspective as well, but I have so much to catch up on, it just doesn't have the same implications for me at the moment. I hope the way things have been happening change so that you get your excitement and joy back, because someday I see myself in your shoes of still being a part of this wonderful hobby years down the road and I want it to be even better then. At least we have SM2 coming to satiate all our desire to dive into the 41st millennium.
10th lost a lot of character by trying to copy Age of Sigmar's homework. If you are only going to release one new mini it can't be ugly with boring rules. The rules people do get feel like a downgrade from the free rules in the case of Custodes and GSC. It's a great time to be an AOS player entering 4th and that isn't how I felt entering 10th.
Completely agree with every take - In regards to the sculpt - it is executed very well but it is obvious whomever was art directing or creative directing did not create/maintain the ecosystem for the artists (concept art, trust to the artist, enough time, etc.) to have the coteaz model really shine.
Will say I love the feel of the new codex a lot, bringing back the feel of the old codex daemon hunter with some open ended unit options is an amazing thing and brings a little bit of that conversion bait heresy is so wonderful for back to 40K
I have to admit, I'm a bit bummed out, since I my heyday of REALLY being into the Warhammer lore was back in the mid-2000s, when GW was really focused on the Inquisition, with two codices, their own specialist game, and several banger novels. Inquisitors are just fucking cool, and are honestly perfect POV characters and fan-entrypoints into the setting, since they can move around freely and aren't just, you know, MORE space marines. (And yes, they are ruthless bastards with questionable motives, but hey, that SHOULD be part of the deal when you get into a horrific dystopia.) Anyway, here's my personal wishlist: - New modular Inquisitor kit. - One or two new assassin types w. kits. - Imperial stormtrooper kit (OR inquisitorial upgrade sprues for Tempestus Scions) - I'd honestly love some kind of Crusader squad (as in the henchmen turned into a squad type, not the Black Templars, lol) or something like Frateris Militia or something. - MAYBE some kind of new fucked-up secret special weapon, like a bunch of daemonhosts linked together or something unlocked from the vaults or Terra, I have no idea, lol. This is entirely optional. - Honestly not much more, not asking for the sky here.
I feel like they've tried to re-imagine power armour for someone that isn't a Space Marine. He shouldn't look like a Space Marine Captain with Thunder Hammer so i get what they're doing with the chunkier, less refined armour but even trying to give them a little with that the pose is still weird and his face is just... bad. I don't think it's laziness. Sometimes bad sculpts happen. For the rest of the release GW haven't hyped it beyond saying *redacted* was coming in summer though that still feels slightly off as a tease for a single miniature codex. They don't have reveal shows for a single codex unless it's something really big so the Monday morning community post doesn't seem that out of place. Whether the whole release could or should have been something more is another matter but the pattern is fairly set now for releases being either single miniature or a big range refresh/expansion where needed. There are quite a lot of fairly new minis in the imperial agents range, this is just bringing them together.
It's also possible that they sent the sculpt out to all the painting UA-camrs and they all said "I'm not doing a video on that, it's rubbish" so they just quietly dropped the announcement rather than doing a live stream that would be just full of comments about how ugly the Coteaz mini is.
I also wonder if the *redacted* codex was a placeholder for one of a couple of options. If Skaventide wasn't being well received they'd bring on the hype with a reveal of a new Blood Angels codex and range refresh but if it was going well they'd just let this slip out to fill the space.
I feel like if the Inquisitors had come with a command squad or something and then packaged that with other units. That would have felt like a proper army release

I'll agree that the new Coteaz model pales in comparison to the old one for sure. The thing is, though, I do enjoy the concept of the Inquisitorial agents army. It's great for people that want to soup together a bunch of more niche factions that normally wouldn't be able to be a part of the main 40K game. Not only that, but it's great for Kill Team players that wanna make the jump to finally start playing 40K. If you've got a bunch of these kits already, you can just team them up together, buy a couple extra kits to pad everything out, and you've got your army for 40K and it all makes sense in the lore!
My biggest issue with Games Workshop is as follows (from the perspective of a new tabletop fan): In 2020, I purchased the latest edition and built my army using the additional codex books. It was expensive, but I was satisfied. - Now, a new edition has been released. With inflation and Games Workshop raising prices to extreme levels, I can barely afford to keep up with yet another new version of this game. - My friends can't get into this fantastic franchise because it's too expensive. Games Workshop has made it difficult for new players to understand what to buy and how to start playing, despite all the changes to the website, codex databases, etc. - The new releases are just okay. Why did we have to wait for some epic factions like the Imperial Guard so late in the cycle, only for it to be sidelined because they released yet another new version of 40k? - Content creators are complaining (for good reason) about the difficulties in promoting Games Workshop's new IPs in both tabletop and video games. - They are finally licensing the 40k IP to competent game developers, and we are about to see some epic new video games in the universe, along with a major new TV show on Amazon. So why did they release this pointless Warhammer+ streaming service? - They are banning everyone's fan art and videos. In some cases, Games Workshop has become more evil than Nintendo. How can anyone be more evil than Nintendo?
So my idea for fixing the model when building it, would be to move the hammer to his open right hand so its a similar position to the old model, and then for his outstretched left hand that was resting on the hammer instead have him holding a decapitated daemon head, im sure its not hard to find a bunch of random bits that can add more character to the armor from misc sprues laying around. As for the Eagle model, replace the ruin piece with the body of the decapitated demon and make it look like the eagle is taking off from the headless corpse

They think 40k fans will gobble anything up because they will and do. Its been plainly obvious since the Desolation squad came out that Gdubs does not give af anymore. That kit looks awful. Ffs half the primaris range looks awful unless you spend huge amounts of money on upgrade sprues. People buy it anyway. They just did *another* price increase which means basic infantry squads in the US are $75 after tax. That's $2 per *gram* and I still have people trying to tell me that the prices are reasonable. No, they are not. The prices don't even make sense as the HH marines are just as big as the 40k marines now and are cheaper per gram. This is in addition to Gdubs lowering the points so you have to buy *more* models to even play the game. Forcing the cost per army higher even before you factor in their endless price increases. I keep up with the lore but until Gdubs changes their business practices I'm done. I play with 3d printed models using one page rules. I'll come back if they start being reasonable again.
Well said, based on what Val has warned the Sang guard an Astrowrath the grim will be downgraded. But the sanguiniary and Lemartes will be absolutely legionary. So at least we will get really good models and then the rest really plain.
As a huge Inquisition fan. (GK Deathwatch, Stormtroopers armies, plus lots of customized henchmen) I'm still really salty since they brought out Agents of Imperium codex for 7th then nuked the entire Codex line in place of Indexes the release of 8th just 6 months later. I want the good old days of Daemonhunters codex where an Inquisitor HQ choice was buffed by his retinue, with increases of WS, BS, Ld, Initiative and strength for various henchmen in his retinue so you could have so much fun making your own Inquisitor and squad.
Yep the new model kind of looks like an over grown baby in power armour. They could have made inquisitorial troopers and released that seeing that their what inquisitors generally bring with them on missions alongside members of their retinue
😂😂😂 Deathwing Terminator helmets look like Grey Knights. Risen look like primaris with cloaks, instead of 30k veterans. Azmodai looks squaty from the distance. All of them have less heraldry\ornament\accessories. Kroot look fine But hounds come in boxes of 5.
The dark angels were terrible. Lost so much personality, detail and options. The kroot were great. Kind of feels like xenos generally let the people there who are actually talented and creative really flex their muscles
Corteaz looks so weird compared to his previous model and the grey knight beside him looks so tiny and out of proportion, they really need a whole chapter refresh
I'm gonna wait for the codex release - this will make or break whether I'll step out of Indexhammer/Combat Patrol lists. I still love the idea of fielding a mixed army for fluff; really hope there is some consolation there
They could/ should have made Inquisitor-lord Fyodor Karamazov, a centrepiece model. Make his 'throne of judgement' much bigger (his old model was 3rd ed small scale) on a dioramic base with some scenery and minions. -so, a inquisitor codex equivalent to the 'Triumph of st Katie' or 'Szarehk the Silent king', etc. …but no they sent him to legends because they have no creativity. >:(

It's absolutely lazy. Inquisitorial henchmen in all 3 boxes (2 sets in one!), stuff from other armies in the box (and yes, Deathwatch is another army, even if now they're just generic Space Marines), only one Assassin (and the least popular one at that). The Imperial Agents Boarding Patrol was better than all three of those boxes. 20 Navy Breachers + Starstriders + Assassin - lots of models, thematic (Rogue Trader and their boarding party), not a big can of soup. It felt like its own army.
I still obviously really like 40k but I agree, a quite a bit of stuff just feels lazy and so lacking these days. Codex lore that's so much lesser than it used to be in previous editions where we used to get stories and in-universe documents and full descriptions for units, codex lore just being copy & pasted from previous versions for the most part, models like Coteaz that just feel like they couldn't be bothered and didn't know what they were doing... there's just been several decisions that feel like there's no passion and care from them. Like, The Leagues of Votann were released 2 years ago. They still don't have a novel, because they just didn't think a new army being added was a big enough deal for a novel at or near their launch. They've still had basically no involvement in 40k to make them feel like they're actually part of the setting. It's as if they gave no real attention to doing things properly, released their models, and then forgot about them beyond the occasional reference. Even when they get their new codex I'm not expecting it to do anything about the big lack of league lore and that they NEED to have a lot more to establish them properly, because it'll most likely just be the same lore as their codex has at the moment with a few slight additions. It's just such a shame.

You said it Valrak, a lazy release. One new model (Poorly Designed), no new Stormtroopers, No Primaris Scale Deathwatch, and no Inquisitorial upgrade Sprues. As to the Battleforces, Old Coteaz model is better (Just bought one from Element Games), got the priest and the navigator from ebay at under £10 each. GW seem like they are trying to fail.
I was really hyped for the Agents of the Imperium boxset, because it was something different. New Assassins, distinct Ordos, Deathwatch. I just wanted new models for each of these. It would be an instant buy for me. Combining the kill teams is cool, but its just not as cool as new models and making the range seem alive and invested in. The possibilities for new cool models and unique sculpts is a lot more tangible when not dealing with Space Marines and Orcs for example (both of which I love) but you have opportunities to go in ways those ranges can't go with Agents of the Imperium. Maybe next edition, eh? :D

@@MythicSton3 That's not going to do a thing. The real issue with SM is that GW has been stuck on 4's for decades. They need to up the S and T of all models in the range. ALL bolt weapons need at least +1S and -1AP more than they have (Chaos SM too) and the melee S needs at least +1 as well (S5 chainswords, S6 power weapons, S10 power fists, etc.)
@@JimH. Sure, and then up the points massively while you're at it. Doing all the things you're asking for at the current points cost would catapult SM to a 65%+ winrate instantly. Chainswords wounding almost all transports across the game on 5s is ridiculous, and upping the toughness to 5 across the board would invalidate like 70% of the weapon options of anything that isn't a marine.

My biggest concern with this book is that it feels like a stop-gap book before squatting. I am weary to encourage anyone to start this army. Big Beasts of Chaos energy all over it.
They could have gone crazy with the Inquisitor / agents stuff. Full new range, refresh old inquisitors , new weird looking units ext. Na just repeat old units with one new unit who is worse than the old model in every way. I was ready to drop a tone of money if each set was new, now im just gonna take that money elsewhere.
Feels like Agents Codex are a second thought in general, just to convert Kill Team/spinoff players to big 40k and also to placate old time fans.

That's why I've switched to a lot to the specialist games. They have much longer timetables. Yeah, it might be awhile between new releases. But I'm actually happy when they do. Unlike 40k

I imagine that GW is going through massive groupthink. This model got presented and no one has the balls to say 'that's shit!'. Corporate culture on the retail side sounds Orwellian enough, that I'm definitely starting to believe it's also spread to the design end. I hope the designers find it feasible to jump ship or take lead on the business side, because the MBAs who are pushing out underwhelming box after underwhelming box are going to squander the growth.

I don't know if I would say they are lazy. But I would argue that we are getting disappointing releases because the team are spreading themselves too thin. When I started the Hobby as a kid, they had Fantasy, 40K, MESBG and Bloodbowl. I took a break and when I retuned. they had AoS, 40K, MESBG, Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest & Horus Heresy. Since I started up again, we also now have Kill Team, Legions Imperialis, Warcry, Old Worlds and Underworlds. That's 4 to 12 games since I started. It's tripled. It seems with each new game, there is less of the rest. Maybe not, but it seems that way and so we get more half arsed releases because they don't have time to make models at the same rate they could before. They are overstretched.

I think we missed the point that a chapter specific space marine list now has the opportunity to buy 4 codices to field an army. 1 generic marines, 1 chapter specific marines, 1 imperial knights, 1 agents of imperium. 240$ of books to field an army and flipping through 4 codices. I can't wait!

As a Deathwatch player, I can't help but agree. One actually new model for the Agents is an embarrassment. The Ordos Xenos box is more Kill Team than Inquisition. It's fucking shocking. This on top of a gutting of the Deathwatch rules is beyond lazy.
10th edition was the best edition because it got me into Horus Heresy which has been so much fun. I can't ever see myself going back to 40k ever again at this point.

Fully agreed there mate. Just as I said yesterday, this is really strange for such a massive company. When you look at the guys who make excellent 3rd party models, they are usually from one to few guys, they make more releases than gw on monthly bases. There is no excuse. They seem like they're incapable to run their own shop. Warhammer + is a great example. Now I love warhammer 40k. It is something I enjoy with my friends very much. I will continue to look onward for brighter days but something needs to happen. Lion came out more than a year ago and 0 lore has come out about him since. I can't understand how is it possible that they haven't capitalized on that.

I suspect that GW wanted to keep Coteaz on a certain sized sprue so design choices were made. Though how they managed to make literally every part of the model objectively worse (or at the very least more plain) is beyond me. If you compare the old model, Each individual part is lessened. Shoulder pads, fur mantle, knees, chest plate… all made simpler or less ornate.
GW has been doing less ornate for a while now. Just check the Primaris.
first born marines always felt more... flavorful. Like even the basic tactical squad felt like they had more character compared to the new intercessors.
Because they had! Lots of different helmets, shoulders and other bits to give them character in the box
Primaris of each armor type are the same model reposed. Since people love them GW understood that they can lower the effort on anything they do...
And this whole edition is just pleasing the competitive crowd which is killing the hobby aspect of the game. Everything is being set up to be able to quickly iterate for the matched play balance. Simplifications, unit cuts,... and with this as main focus of the work the lore itself and its implementation into the game is just an afterthought.

I tried to come back to the game at the end of 9th/beginning of 10th and have been nothing but disappointed. I've started playing AoS simply because that team deserves my money with the amount of actual effort they've put into it
I'm really shocked that they didn't add the Scions/ Stormtroopers to that book. I feel like that was a huge miss. I would have been the number one customer for this book if it did it
as far as I'm concerned, you're speaking for me too ^-^. Inquisitor Coteaz was the first model I entered in a local painting competition back in like... 2007, I think. Ever since Primaris Space Marines debuted I dreamt of various conversions or a total revamped model of Inquisitor Coteaz.. bruv, my inner child is actually SO sad to see this. My nostalgia is SO crushed at the lack of.. everything, regarding the result of the new model and I am grateful you said what you said and addressed it how you did.
I gotta say, I've played 40k for 24 years and I've recently stepped into Age of Sigmar with Seraphon, Ironjawz and Skaven and man I'm loving the models and simplicity of the game. I'll always be more drawn to 40k, but loving the different feel and models at the mo
I'm relatively early into my venture into the hobby. I'm enjoying the head first dive I've taken into the lore, getting some minis and taking a crack at getting paint on plastic. I see it from your perspective as well, but I have so much to catch up on, it just doesn't have the same implications for me at the moment. I hope the way things have been happening change so that you get your excitement and joy back, because someday I see myself in your shoes of still being a part of this wonderful hobby years down the road and I want it to be even better then. At least we have SM2 coming to satiate all our desire to dive into the 41st millennium.
10th lost a lot of character by trying to copy Age of Sigmar's homework. If you are only going to release one new mini it can't be ugly with boring rules. The rules people do get feel like a downgrade from the free rules in the case of Custodes and GSC. It's a great time to be an AOS player entering 4th and that isn't how I felt entering 10th.
Completely agree with every take - In regards to the sculpt - it is executed very well but it is obvious whomever was art directing or creative directing did not create/maintain the ecosystem for the artists (concept art, trust to the artist, enough time, etc.) to have the coteaz model really shine.
Will say I love the feel of the new codex a lot, bringing back the feel of the old codex daemon hunter with some open ended unit options is an amazing thing and brings a little bit of that conversion bait heresy is so wonderful for back to 40K

I have to admit, I'm a bit bummed out, since I my heyday of REALLY being into the Warhammer lore was back in the mid-2000s, when GW was really focused on the Inquisition, with two codices, their own specialist game, and several banger novels. Inquisitors are just fucking cool, and are honestly perfect POV characters and fan-entrypoints into the setting, since they can move around freely and aren't just, you know, MORE space marines. (And yes, they are ruthless bastards with questionable motives, but hey, that SHOULD be part of the deal when you get into a horrific dystopia.)
Anyway, here's my personal wishlist:
- New modular Inquisitor kit.
- One or two new assassin types w. kits.
- Imperial stormtrooper kit (OR inquisitorial upgrade sprues for Tempestus Scions)
- I'd honestly love some kind of Crusader squad (as in the henchmen turned into a squad type, not the Black Templars, lol) or something like Frateris Militia or something.
- MAYBE some kind of new fucked-up secret special weapon, like a bunch of daemonhosts linked together or something unlocked from the vaults or Terra, I have no idea, lol. This is entirely optional.
- Honestly not much more, not asking for the sky here.
I feel like they've tried to re-imagine power armour for someone that isn't a Space Marine. He shouldn't look like a Space Marine Captain with Thunder Hammer so i get what they're doing with the chunkier, less refined armour but even trying to give them a little with that the pose is still weird and his face is just... bad.
I don't think it's laziness. Sometimes bad sculpts happen.
For the rest of the release GW haven't hyped it beyond saying *redacted* was coming in summer though that still feels slightly off as a tease for a single miniature codex. They don't have reveal shows for a single codex unless it's something really big so the Monday morning community post doesn't seem that out of place.
Whether the whole release could or should have been something more is another matter but the pattern is fairly set now for releases being either single miniature or a big range refresh/expansion where needed. There are quite a lot of fairly new minis in the imperial agents range, this is just bringing them together.
It's also possible that they sent the sculpt out to all the painting UA-camrs and they all said "I'm not doing a video on that, it's rubbish" so they just quietly dropped the announcement rather than doing a live stream that would be just full of comments about how ugly the Coteaz mini is.
I also wonder if the *redacted* codex was a placeholder for one of a couple of options. If Skaventide wasn't being well received they'd bring on the hype with a reveal of a new Blood Angels codex and range refresh but if it was going well they'd just let this slip out to fill the space.
I feel like if the Inquisitors had come with a command squad or something and then packaged that with other units. That would have felt like a proper army release

I'll agree that the new Coteaz model pales in comparison to the old one for sure. The thing is, though, I do enjoy the concept of the Inquisitorial agents army. It's great for people that want to soup together a bunch of more niche factions that normally wouldn't be able to be a part of the main 40K game. Not only that, but it's great for Kill Team players that wanna make the jump to finally start playing 40K. If you've got a bunch of these kits already, you can just team them up together, buy a couple extra kits to pad everything out, and you've got your army for 40K and it all makes sense in the lore!
A miniature designed by committee
My biggest issue with Games Workshop is as follows (from the perspective of a new tabletop fan):
In 2020, I purchased the latest edition and built my army using the additional codex books. It was expensive, but I was satisfied.
- Now, a new edition has been released. With inflation and Games Workshop raising prices to extreme levels, I can barely afford to keep up with yet another new version of this game.
- My friends can't get into this fantastic franchise because it's too expensive. Games Workshop has made it difficult for new players to understand what to buy and how to start playing, despite all the changes to the website, codex databases, etc.
- The new releases are just okay. Why did we have to wait for some epic factions like the Imperial Guard so late in the cycle, only for it to be sidelined because they released yet another new version of 40k?
- Content creators are complaining (for good reason) about the difficulties in promoting Games Workshop's new IPs in both tabletop and video games.
- They are finally licensing the 40k IP to competent game developers, and we are about to see some epic new video games in the universe, along with a major new TV show on Amazon. So why did they release this pointless Warhammer+ streaming service?
- They are banning everyone's fan art and videos. In some cases, Games Workshop has become more evil than Nintendo. How can anyone be more evil than Nintendo?
So my idea for fixing the model when building it, would be to move the hammer to his open right hand so its a similar position to the old model, and then for his outstretched left hand that was resting on the hammer instead have him holding a decapitated daemon head, im sure its not hard to find a bunch of random bits that can add more character to the armor from misc sprues laying around. As for the Eagle model, replace the ruin piece with the body of the decapitated demon and make it look like the eagle is taking off from the headless corpse
Put some Stormcast symbolism on the new Coteaz and then the model starts making sense >.>'

They think 40k fans will gobble anything up because they will and do. Its been plainly obvious since the Desolation squad came out that Gdubs does not give af anymore. That kit looks awful. Ffs half the primaris range looks awful unless you spend huge amounts of money on upgrade sprues. People buy it anyway. They just did *another* price increase which means basic infantry squads in the US are $75 after tax. That's $2 per *gram* and I still have people trying to tell me that the prices are reasonable. No, they are not.
The prices don't even make sense as the HH marines are just as big as the 40k marines now and are cheaper per gram.
This is in addition to Gdubs lowering the points so you have to buy *more* models to even play the game. Forcing the cost per army higher even before you factor in their endless price increases.
I keep up with the lore but until Gdubs changes their business practices I'm done. I play with 3d printed models using one page rules. I'll come back if they start being reasonable again.
Like i said in live chat i firmly believe this release was either managed by a small team or interns.

I'm still really salty since they brought out Agents of Imperium codex for 7th then nuked the entire Codex line in place of Indexes the release of 8th just 6 months later.
I want the good old days of Daemonhunters codex where an Inquisitor HQ choice was buffed by his retinue, with increases of WS, BS, Ld, Initiative and strength for various henchmen in his retinue so you could have so much fun making your own Inquisitor and squad.
Yep the new model kind of looks like an over grown baby in power armour. They could have made inquisitorial troopers and released that seeing that their what inquisitors generally bring with them on missions alongside members of their retinue

They could/ should have made Inquisitor-lord Fyodor Karamazov, a centrepiece model.
Make his 'throne of judgement' much bigger (his old model was 3rd ed small scale) on a dioramic base with some scenery and minions. -so, a inquisitor codex equivalent to the 'Triumph of st Katie' or 'Szarehk the Silent king', etc.
…but no they sent him to legends because they have no creativity. >:(

Btw agree that GW is getting lazy on 40k, from models to Codex, the passion just get lower and lower🤦🏻♂️just look at Sydonian Skatros, it's just...ugh🙄
It's absolutely lazy. Inquisitorial henchmen in all 3 boxes (2 sets in one!), stuff from other armies in the box (and yes, Deathwatch is another army, even if now they're just generic Space Marines), only one Assassin (and the least popular one at that).
The Imperial Agents Boarding Patrol was better than all three of those boxes. 20 Navy Breachers + Starstriders + Assassin - lots of models, thematic (Rogue Trader and their boarding party), not a big can of soup. It felt like its own army.

I still obviously really like 40k but I agree, a quite a bit of stuff just feels lazy and so lacking these days. Codex lore that's so much lesser than it used to be in previous editions where we used to get stories and in-universe documents and full descriptions for units, codex lore just being copy & pasted from previous versions for the most part, models like Coteaz that just feel like they couldn't be bothered and didn't know what they were doing... there's just been several decisions that feel like there's no passion and care from them.
Like, The Leagues of Votann were released 2 years ago. They still don't have a novel, because they just didn't think a new army being added was a big enough deal for a novel at or near their launch. They've still had basically no involvement in 40k to make them feel like they're actually part of the setting. It's as if they gave no real attention to doing things properly, released their models, and then forgot about them beyond the occasional reference. Even when they get their new codex I'm not expecting it to do anything about the big lack of league lore and that they NEED to have a lot more to establish them properly, because it'll most likely just be the same lore as their codex has at the moment with a few slight additions.
It's just such a shame.

You said it Valrak, a lazy release. One new model (Poorly Designed), no new Stormtroopers, No Primaris Scale Deathwatch, and no Inquisitorial upgrade Sprues. As to the Battleforces, Old Coteaz model is better (Just bought one from Element Games), got the priest and the navigator from ebay at under £10 each. GW seem like they are trying to fail.

I was really hyped for the Agents of the Imperium boxset, because it was something different. New Assassins, distinct Ordos, Deathwatch. I just wanted new models for each of these. It would be an instant buy for me. Combining the kill teams is cool, but its just not as cool as new models and making the range seem alive and invested in. The possibilities for new cool models and unique sculpts is a lot more tangible when not dealing with Space Marines and Orcs for example (both of which I love) but you have opportunities to go in ways those ranges can't go with Agents of the Imperium. Maybe next edition, eh? :D
the new butter man and bird look like they didnt even sculpt anything but rather they just slapped a bunch of premade assets together and called it a day.
