The War Thunder players all took the day off from leaking government blueprints to remind me that the ugly sci-fi tank is based off an ugly real life tank as though that somehow fixes the fact that it's ugly. Thank you for your comments though, don't be shy!
EDIT: I don't want to disrupt my joke, but I want to add: This is the most fun comments I've read in forever, you've all got a lot of great picks (and awful, downright terrible picks too, but I respect the hustle.)

@@MrChiefchiliThe US had a very deliberate reason for that. They wanted mobile and flexible TD's to serve specifically for counterattacking. That also meant their TD's didn't so much have armour as rather more a vague suggestion of it. As for assault guns, that was very much a "lets stick lots of extra armor onto a Sherman because we're really not seeing that T28 coming anytime soon and we would like to just roll up on an annoying bunker". For most others in WWII it was very much a "find a useful hull, stick a box on top and cram the biggest gun you can fit into it", which is the Vindicator to a T. It's essentially the 40K equivalent of taking an SU-122 and sticking a dozer blade on the front.

The little thing next to Huron is called the Hamadrya. It’s Huron’s chaos familiar that allows him to better perform chaos sorcery and grants him various boons that, though unpredictable in nature, always tend to be what is needed at the time, such as protecting him from psychic attacks and allowing him to read thoughts to avoid assassination attempts. I'll be the one guy - you won't appreciate the Nob kit unless you build it. It is one of the most versatile plastic kits GW has ever produced, you could build it 10 times and never have an identical Nob, mix in bits from other kits and some minimal chopwork and every one of them will have a unique look. It's a smorgasbord of spare bits which any Ork collector will tell you is a must for a good Ork kit. And, until the new Boyz kit is rectified, it is still the only and best solution to a problem that has plagued the Ork range since the Brian Nelson revamp - Boss Nobs. The one in the 3rd edition kit is too shrimpy to work as a proper Nob, and the new kit's Nob, while better scaled, is a victim of modern GW kit design in that it's going to be a copy-paste across all your mobs with just the occasional weapon swap. A single Nob kit salvages up to 5 Boyz mobs by giving them each a unique, characterful leader that properly stands out from the horde.

I think my problem is that it's kind of not "normal". It's obviously trying to be "more heavily armored battle tech priest". As opposed to a hypothetical _actual_ "normal" tech priest that's a person-sized dude in a robe with mechanical bits peeking out. The Enginseer model looks too heavily armor plated and _thicc_ to be a "normal" tech priest, the likes of which would be found working on basic maintenance.
At the same time, it doesn't do the "armored battle tech priest" idea well either. It doesn't go _far enough_ if that's the goal. So it ends up in a weird space where it's too chunky to seem like a standard member of the faction, but not chunky enough to seem like one meant to march into melee. It's the worst of both worlds. What GW needs to do is replace this one model with two models that fill each of those roles better. (And that looks less boring).

In defense of the Vindicator, it's based on WW2 assault gun. Best example I can think of is the Sturmgeschütz (Stug 3), where it's basically an armored tank but has a short-ranged mortar instead of an actual normal tank turret used for bunker busting and accompany infantry during a siege. The Vindicator having a massive shovel here also contributes to that, being able to clear rubbles, wires and such so infantry can advance.
The main reason why they made these was because it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to weld a gun to the tank than making the turret. With the turret, you have to take into account the turret ring, and balance the gun since if it's too heavy, it's gonna take 30 mins to just turn the turret.

IDK too much about how they are _supposed_ to be used, but I could see the vindicator being used as a very close range bulldozer/tank that basically lets you drive into enemy fortifications, push all of their Czech hedgehogs/concertina wire/barbed wire/barricades out of the way with the plow, and then destroy any fortifications that might be behind with the cannon, like an exterior wall, a building, or a bunker, in the process making an opening for your troops following behind. It's definitely a bit on the uglier side tbh, but it does make sense IMO.

I have to disagree with your take that the Defiler was "We made the soulgrinder worse". Yes the model is old and hasnt aged well. But calling it a worse soulgrinder is doing it a diservice. Maybe your aware of this already but: The Defiler predates the Soulgrinder, coming out in 3rd edition. The Soulgrinder came out with the first Chaos Daemons codex near the end of 4th.
I was in high school then, just getting into the hobby. This model comes from a time when Chaos was just Space Marines but with Daemons on the side. Some say that's still a problem, but at the time the meme of "they're just regular marines with spikes" was the reality. I didn't play chaos for that reason, but I remember the Defiler fondly. At the time its concept was unique and stood out among the rest of the Chaos Marine line up. If you didn't want to run daemons, it was one of the few non-characters you could run, to which the loyalists didn't have an obvious equivilant. On top of that, Apocalypse hadn't comeout yet. The other largest vehicles, w/o forgeworld, were the landraider and the monolith. The big spider tank stood out next to the rhinos and russes. It also was fun to use in the original Dawn of War.
So then the Demons come out with their first codex with their new models and heres the Soulgrinder. GW ripped the top off the defiler and slapped on a generic demon torso with a sword and called it a new unit. They made a demon centuar out of one of Chao's few truly unique models. They watered down what made this tank special and the Defiler's been slowly forgotten since.

I absolutely loved the Defiler in DoW, it was my favourite chaos unit and tbh i very much preferred them to dreadnoughts.
They look slightly goofy, but honestly they are terrifying if you think about it.
They had an howitzer, a twin autocannon and even a flamer... not to mention the fact that unlike their bricky counterparts the dreadnoughts, defilers looks like a warmachine instead of a Bobcat excavator with legs and weapons.
I can imagine being ambushed by defilers in a cave or high ceiling structure where they are hanging silently on the ceiling like spiders, and next thing you hear is a rattling noise and see a flash. They open fire before dropping down on helpless spacemarines, literally dismembering any living beign they manage.
Also Defiler is a pretty dope name when you got those giant ripper claws.

So the Vindicator is really designed to bring down fortifications. It's a siege tank. It doesn't really need to aim much, you just point it at a bunker
The dozer blade is so it can push through whatever rubble remains of the thing you pointed it at

It is, when you realize that WH40k is basically "World War 2, in space", makes whole lot of sense. I wasn't sure id have a particularly strong opinion on this, however: the vindicator, i can see your compaints with it, IF, it were being used as an MBT like a predator, or APC like a rhino, but the Vindicator was built for a purpose, and that purpose is to make walls go away.. in short order. That gun is a short barreled mortor, it is a rear loading breach cannon that lobs bit, fat, meaty H.E rounds short distances into fortifications, and the dozer blade is to remove the rubble away and sheild the advancing inventry storm to follow. An extreamly neiche machine that suffers horribly outside of that very spesific function.
Additionaly, i am a farily big fan of Crisis Suits. but im also a fan of Gundam, soooo take that as you see fit. I also did not know that the T'au guns on ships were actualy drones that functioned as detachables. I thought it was just GW recycling ready ily availuble parts and allowed the turrets to rotate.

Good video; for the sake of engagement, I'll note my main disagreement, even though you kinda gave the matter a pass: I actually think that the drones slotting into the Sunshark is a relatively clever design. It's like omnipods in Battletech: the drones can hypothetically provide different functions, like additional markerlights, more guns, or shield enhancement, and just having the drone docks makes for good interoperability. That's not actually reflected by the game rules, but, yanno, hypothetically.

The vindicator is not based on the sturmtiger, it’s based on every single assault/siege fighting veichle. It’s a stormpanzervogn. It’s meant to be an infantry support unit and if you look at stug 1-3 and panzerkampfvagen 1-4 with the short gun it’s the same. It’s a short barrel that fires a large caliber explosive round aka large anti infantry round. It makes perfect sense. We even have bulldozer style attachment for tanks to clear mines and debris.
The vindicators only weakness is the shitty ww1 British tank track design and large flat panels at a 90 degree angle that offers 0 protection from an AT round.

I can already list them off for my faction(s):
Space Marines goes to the old firstborn models that needed updates 20 years ago. Shit like Ezekiel, Sanguinor, or Sanguinary Guard or any of their 90's era stuff is atrocious (aside from the Box Dread, that thing was glorious). I can also see why the Desolation Marines are considered the ugliest by some people, but that's mostly because of their wack-ass guns, not their overall sculpting. And even then, the missile launchers can be fixed in a myriad of ways.
Knights is EASILY the Acastus Asterius. Something about that bulbous frame and teeny-tiny head _really_ doesn't look right, and its weird sideways-facing elbows are absolutely ridiculous. It does not look like it can hold up any of its guns without its thin-ass arms snapping. Weirdly enough, the version used in Adeptus Titanicus actually looks good. I have no idea what exactly changed, seeing as how a side-by-side comparison yields no significant differences between the two, but it just looks _better_ somehow.
