  • This video aims to address a common question in the modern lyre community: Why are some lyre harps strung backwards? I'll answer the question "Are there left-handed or right-handed lyres?", "Which is better suited for players of specific hand preferences?", and "How do I choose the right string orientation for me?"

    I'm one of those who can play either lyre, left or right, equally well. It only takes a minute or two to make the mental adjustment. What helps is that I've never thought of lyres being left or right. I know. I'm weird, but I embrace my weirdness! 😸

      @@SamanthaonMars - Wow, thank you! But I don't really see it as a talent. It's just something I can do, maybe others can too if they try. I'm not ambidextrous in any other way. Can't write with my left hand, for instance. I wish I was half as talented as you are!

    I didn't know there were two different kinds. I guess I chose the right one by default. 😁 I wouldn't stand a chance with my left hand. Jeez, we all know how tough even a signature can be with a non dominant hand. 🫣 Great video my friend! I continue to learn things from your channel. 👍 👍 🤚↔️🖐 🪽 👩🏻‍🏫

      Great to see you here! How was your UA-cam detox? I didn't know about the two kinds either. It was only after getting 4 lyres did I realize the difference, LOL. Luckily, my lyres were all in the same orientation otherwise I would have a hard time switching around (until I got my fifth lyre - the transparent one - arranged in the opposite direction...)

    • @LoneTreePeak
      @LoneTreePeak 11 місяців тому

      @SamanthaonMars Well it's been a semi detox I suppose. I feel bad for keeping comments unanswered on my page for too long, so I've been trying to catch up on responding to visitors. I made some new music during my time away and organized some footage. There's just a lot of hours of material to go through at this time. My last trip was very heavy on recording. More than ever I would say. My job is to cut small clips and hope to fit them into a video at some point. There were many places we recorded at. I've done a lot of thinking about video concepts, and the tracks I made were inspired by the footage and experiences. A lot of it is very repetitive listening, and trying to visualize how to arrange it all. One of my biggest struggles is deciding if I should make one music video per area, or a small video that shows all places briefly.
      One good thing about making your own soundtracks, is that you can use the video as sort of an instrument to go with it if you like, so I have to find a way to keep it interesting. It's fun, just very time consuming. Sometimes I listen to the same track for hours trying to decide. When it's just music and no video it's much easier, but I like to make use of the footage I have so that's where most of the time goes. Audio and visual alchemy. 😵‍💫 A lot to unpack here. 😅
      Wow 4 until you spotted the difference? It would've probably took me much longer lol. That transparent one is cool and unique. I'm already wondering if it can glow under a blacklight. 😆 If so, I'm sure I would try to have blacklight lyre sessions to set a vibe. 🟣 🪽 🎶

    I've seen multiple people in the comment sections on this channel ask "can you play this song on a seven string lyre?" The answer is yes. (I will be posting this comment on every video so everyone can see it)
    I had the same problem so I tuned my lyre to be E F G A B C D so I'd be able to play almost any song on this channel. The only problem in tuning the lyre this way is that you can't play 2 of the same notes on the lyre on higher cords
    Example: (G G') When that happens just play the singular G note
    if it looks like this: G G' -Just play the G note twice
    Sometimes, certain songs have lots of different notes in multiple keys that you may be unable to fit onto your lyre.
    Random example, you might need EFGABCD C’ B’ A’ for a song, but you only have 7 strings. First, you can just play C instead of C’ or you can experiment and possibly use D because it has a higher note, and it may sound better (or worse) but you can try that out.
    Secondly, most songs use two hands, usually with one hand as the main melody, and the other with the background melody or beats. If you use both hands for the main melody, you can remove the extra background notes but that will take lots of time. If you want to play a song but the previous method didn't work for you, you can tune your lyre to be able to play the main melody. It may not sound whole, but it is identifiable. (think of it like those piano tutorials on youtube, the easy versions have the main melody but most of the notes are removed to have the most basic sound)
    It works but you may have to occasionally tune the cords for certain songs that are higher or lower pitched of your song. This way works (for most songs) and I know because I learned a few songs already.

    Great video. Very informative and concise. I'm gonna go to a music store next week and see if they have a lyre I like so this video comes at the perfect time. Can you recommend how many strings I should go for as a total beginner? I'd love to have 19 or even more strings but I'm not sure if those lyre would be too difficult/complicated.

    • @Michael-bv4kv
      @Michael-bv4kv 11 місяців тому

      Having less strings makes it more diffucult because you have less notes available. Take it from somone who has been there.

    • @SamanthaonMars
      @SamanthaonMars  11 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for the positive feedback! :) As to how many strings to get for a new lyre, it depends on the type of music you want to play. I play a wide range of music and the 16-string is a great all-round option. I made a video where I compared the pros and cons of three common 16-string lyres, which might be helpful for your upcoming visit to the music store: ua-cam.com/video/m3z4OBTDTDQ/v-deo.html . 19-string is a great option too, giving you a slightly wider range without being too overwhelming. 20 or more strings I think are better for people who have experience with music, so that you know how to utilize all the extra strings. If you're into historic music, then lyres with fewer strings are more suitable. For example, the 7-string or 10-string for Germanic, Greek, or ancient music. I'm not familiar with historic lyres. The general rule is to get a lyre that matches the type of music you like to play.

    • @Michael-bv4kv
      @Michael-bv4kv 11 місяців тому +1

      @@SamanthaonMars You should make a video of a 7 string lyre and try to match the historic style. The issue I had with a 7 string lyre is that there are no turorials on it of ancient style music. You are the only channel avalible.

    • @SamanthaonMars
      @SamanthaonMars  11 місяців тому +1
