Former Enterprise employee checking in: him tearing apart a rental to do this and put it back together and have the Rental counter clerk not notice is 1000000% possible. These cars are checked in so fast that if you are not a car enthusiast (like myself) and not conditioned to check EVERY little nick and scratch, they never would've known anything unorthodox had occured with the vehicle. Not to mention, these cars are beat to shit for 40k miles and then sold to Gen Pop. Not saying I believe the guy with no gps tracking or video, but him getting away with what he did to a rental? 1000% believable.

@Not The Technician You don't if you have your own full coverage insurance. It all depends on your own policy and risk though.
@@jonasvalero4940 This is such a wives tale. Your personal insurance policy covers your liability of what you hit but not what you hit it with. Your full coverage of your personal vehicle doesn't even roll over to the other cars you own... let alone a rental. Sure, you're covered to your limits for liability of what you damage but you're responsible for the rental (and anything above your limits). I can promise you this having been licensed in property and casualty insurance. Get the insurance from the rental company every time.
@@goofballbiscuits3647 Lol, I had an cosmetic accident with a rental and I only gave 10 dollars in my part and told them they can deal with my insurance. Months later, claim was closed.
@@jonasvalero4940 Cool story. Some companies do. But, for every one of those, there are myriad others who aren't so fortunate. It probably wasn't worth the litigation fees for them after a cost benefit analysis. If you're with a big box brand, there may have been an agreement between those particular entities as well. Consider this: why would you ever get full coverage on multiple vehicles that you _do_ own if you were magically covered for every car you drive. Liability coverage follows you, full coverage doesn't.
Rentals are not as cut and dry as you're making them out to be. Everyone should verify with their agent what is covered with rentals before making a gamble like that. Quit pretending you know an industry because you were a customer once that got lucky and didn't get banged by an indemnity or rental company. Most people do... and dry as ya mama while they do too.

Driving cross country is quite enjoyable, it's a shame so few people ever do it.
I agree, this country is beautiful and the geoology is diverse. I did it three times: Southern route, central route, and Northern route. All three were with my four-legged best friend as co-pilot. I wasn't going for a record, but I was still making time. First time no authorities, second time a warning, and may have evaded one on the third. All three provided great memories.

I want to know how the conversation went returning the rental car. I assume there are some scars from part installation, removal, rock chips at 159mph. And the crazy high mileage he put on it
What surprises me is now a days most rental vehicles have GPS trackers, if the car starts going well over the speed limit usually the police are called by the rental company just in case the car is being stolen and taken to a chop shop. Its surprising that he didnt have any trouble with the rental company.
lxlPhantomlxl I worked for a rental car company (a big one) a few years ago and this was absolutely not the case. The people running the place were not car people, actually far from it. They didn’t care where the car had been or what it had done. You might possibly be thinking of an exotic rental car company, they take more serious measures (via GPS and G meters) to make sure their cars aren’t being used on a track. Just from your average airport rental company however, they don’t care one bit what you do with the car as long as it doesn’t return with significant damage
@vinwiki @edbolian could we get a video on this? These are some fair points and could make for an interesting story
lxlPhantomlxl on top of that, I once drove a Dodge Charger that had an alignment issue from one store to another because they had somebody who wanted to rent it. As I got to my destination I informed the manager that the car would need to be aligned. They brought it to the local chain alignment shop and informed the manager that the car had a bent subframe from somebody “most likely jumping it”. They just said “oh well” and moved on. You could get away with murder on those rentals as long as it looked pretty clean when you returned it
@@PilotJetProductions Hm, that's interesting. Maybe it just depends on the rental company. I only mentioned it because I know someone who works for a smaller family owned rental company and they track their cars. I don't know if it's because of prior issues with theft or to simply protect their assets. I guess larger companies have so much money they dont really worry about a car being stolen or anything like that. Plus they probably have really good insurence that will just pay for them to get a new one. I could be wrong but who knows. Either way the idea of doing this with a rental car is just insane to me. Not just using a rental car to drive high speeds coast to coast but at the same time stripping the insides and adding extra tanks? I'm sure if the company sees this video they would be like WTF? Is this what people do with rentals now a days 😂

If you're already doing 150+ might as well just stick to the pedal. The fastest normal cop cars do like 150 max. In this case, i would have tuned car to remove the top speed limiter in the mustang. those can easily to 175 and out run the cops@@onlysilv
@@ayushmalpeddi2793 That works especially on a sport bike where they won't spike strip you. My top speed was around 185 mph I rode fast for around a decade and never got pulled over going fast because they could not keep up. Got lucky I didn't get a helicopter I suppose that would be the only thing that could get you. I don't ride anymore though.
I feel like this story is full of shit. The fact that he went through all that prep but didn’t get a camera live run-so show the run, get scouts to verify the run. I call BS

Goats on the car = good luck to make him the current GOAT of Cannonballing
TRUE STORY: I had the privilege of preparing a new Mazda RX-7 for the 1979 Cannonball Race. All that I did to the car was a new Intake Manifold,Holley Carb, Headers and a humongous Fuel Cell under the rear hatch glass. We had an extremely talented driver. The fuel cell turned out to be defective and started to leak from a seam halfway across the country. With all the fuel grief,we still managed to finish 6th that year........Tough gettin' old. All I have is memories.......!!
How can I do this myself ?
Charlie Christie but what an awesome memory. I won the 40th anniversary event last year
@@MayaLXiX You will have to ask Fred Ashmore. I haven't been involved in the Cannonball in a very very long time......
Surprised he isn't waiting for the statute of limitations to expire before he talks about it.
What is the statute of limitations regarding this situation?
You can't be arrested for hearsay.
@@Pheatan you definitely can what are you talking about?
You can be arrested if you admit to breaking the law and are specific about it. He’s on the verge of specific.
@@VictoryAviation He specifically stated that he went across country in less than 26 hours and that he had cruise control at 120 and he had it pegged at 159 and that he ditched the cops.
Hey I know this guy from the C2C group! Fred Ashmore! Congrats, Fred!
Out of staters: "What is a Maine?"
Me: (sipping blueberry juice out of a lobster shell) "Hell yeah bub, he friggen sent er', wicked good job"
As a truck driver, I can attest that radar and cop activity decreased tremendously. None in Ohio. PA Staties ramped back up in June.
I also went across the country when I got laid off, and there was NO traffic and no caps. Awesome.
No video or GPS logs? No co-pilot? He was able to spend so much time removing the seats and adding gas tanks, but spent zero time making sure there was any kind of proof? $140 and about 10 minutes of work he would have proof. The whole story should be dismissed on this alone. It didn’t happen.
This man literally told cops to step up their game. Not only did he set the fastest solo record, but he also solidified it by making sure that nobody could do it ever again! XD
Thanks alot, gotta wait for the next pandemic for my shot.
That magic 24 hour 00 minute record breaking run is coming. Can’t wait for that day. If it’s a solo run too, oh my god that’ll be insane.
I highly doubt it'll ever come. This was the guy who ran it solo and gave no fucks, ready to go to jail, with only one fill up. And you think his time will be beat by almost two hours? Average top speed of almost 117mph? Nah.
Jake Thompson you have a point tho

I did it in 22 hours in a Toyota Prius.
I feel like the next natural progression is the car equivalent of aerial refueling, car-to-car refueling without stopping. xD

yup, pull up behind someone and do a train system with a flex hose and high speed pump. Even if you can maintain like 60 in the slow lane doing it, this would still cut a ton of time
@@Hyperious_in_the_air all this without getting caught by the cops lol
@craigcusteau right, was mostly joking about this but in theory I guess you could have a little boom that comes out of the front of the fueling car, and modify the fuel tank to have the filling cap in the back
You know its big when you hear about this on your radio even! Great video Ed
Upex what radio station was it on
I'm not buying it, without documentation, it's not the record. I can't believe he thinks he can say, trust me I did it. And we're supposed to buy it, Nah.
They always say “you need to do this” but never “we need to do this”
Let me get this strait,,,, you reserved a Mustang GT, from a rental car company .... and that,s what you ended up with ?? That is amazing , great job !
eric wsmith You have to remember, almost no one and I mean NO ONE is renting cars during Covid. I live across from a racetrack parking lot and they have filled it with at least 1000+ rental cars sitting on the lot collecting dust.
@@javierriccardi --wonder how many of those cars in the lot are "reserved" for some other place around the country. The last time I rented a car , they sent me out to space 24-b ( or something ) for car "X" .... no car was there , they could not find it...I ended up with car "Y" .. And i did not care car what I drove ,, Hertz could not even get me the car they gave me ....50 feet from their own parking lot !

this could bring on a new style of cannonball. the car has to be rented from enterprise in nyc and returned to an enterprise in portofino using the timestamps on the receipt. it would change the game up you have to use a basically stock car any mods you do will be on your time so the faster you slap it in and run the better. could be real interesting
Great idea for somebody else. Cuz im to old.
I don’t know how you get a time of 25:55, but that is insane.
You can get better time
For exmple they take too high hp cars instead of taking one car which spends like 7 liters and still can go 120 mph all the time. Bmw 525d or 520 d audi a6 2.0 or that sort of cars
@@locasenior8229 you don't do 7l at 120mph with any car... They need more power for extra weight of the tanks. He reached 157 and couldn't reach the 180 he wanted to take advantage of... Those cars are probably also electronically limited...
A8 with the 4.2l V8 Diesel. There you go, easy.

"The sooner I get out of California the better"......My thought as well every time I've had to visit that state.
So many simple ways to get at least some validation but we’re going with “trust me bro”???
I mean, if you set it up correctly, it absolutely is possible to run cameras the whole 25 hours without having to monitor them. If you went into without a camera, then surely it doesn't matter much if something goes wrong and stops recording with a camera. Don't have to worry about monitoring it then. Better to at least TRY than not try at all.
Camera's are evidence that can be used against you in multiple jurisdictions. Say you get busted and they share the footage with other departments. You are looking at multiple charges in multiple states. I'd rather not have video evidence of myself breaking the law in 10+ states.
@@Long-nd8bq Except that wasn't his reasoning for not recording
I cant front; Kovid + empty roads was a beautiful thing. If there was ever a perfext time to do a run would have been 3 months ago.
