I never really thought about it until now, but Tony Hale as Buster was probably the largest stretch as a performance in Arrested Development. And he executed it flawlessly. Seeing him here, I would love to see him play a detached executive in something similar to Tom Cruise's role in Tropic Thunder. I could see him nailing it as Jeff Zucker in a recap of the new Late Night Wars covering Conan's stint on the tonight show. I could see him nailing Steve Ballmer if he beefed up a bit.
I love Tony hale so much! What a treat to be randomly recommended this - with the king Paul F. Tompkins! Love Tony as Buster & also Gary on Veep. Love Paul in Bojack Horseman and as my fave guest on the Off Book podcast ❤
Paul, either you switched sides, or you are showing us this in reverse, what is the deal? Are you trying to confuse us? That's okay, awesome interview as usual!
@@Zack29810 I disagree. Seinfeld is too vapid for me. All it is is bits with zero narrative. You can watch Seinfeld episodes in any order, and it's not going to make any difference. I like AD, though, but I just think LS is more relatable.
Sucks that season 4 (and 5, maybe) ended up being such a bummer. All the introspective questions about "is Netflix going to be watched in the same way as television?" ended up not amounting to much. Also, Buster always seemed like the character with the most limited range of possibilities, I thought his character was underused and his moments have never been extremely funny. But Tony Hale is a nice dude.
I love this show, Paul F. Tompkins, Tony Hale, and alcohol. That being said, I wish they would say what drink was chosen by the guest. I know I heard grapefruit, so I'm assuming vodka and grapefruit juice, with an optional variation with club soda. Well, anyway... hail Satan.
You are really gonna make a man who thought the blue on the map was land the president of the company. Do you know what I have had it with this family..
Tony Hale is probably the sweetest, nicest man in show business. i can just feel rays of love coming from him. i can listen to him telling a story for hours
"If you're not practicing contentment where you're at, you're not going to be content when you get what you want" So true, Tony. I went through this with my job, and it led to the worst bout of depression I ever had. Now I hear other people place all their hopes in one remote event or goal, and I feel for them. It's good to strive towards goals, but sometimes you've got to teach yourself to appreciate where you already are.
@@joseph-zoramcbride4029 I'd say you're right but only since one has gained the thing they imagined they wanted only to be forced to confront the fact that it isn't.
Sorry this is two years late, but my God off duty Tony Hale is so relaxed and cool and good looking! Actually I can't stand it! Thought he was a goofy, awkward guy like me who'd made good and a huge success, turns out he's just very good at imitating being a loser.
What a lovely interview. Tony Hale is a delight and Paul F. Tompkins is an excellent interviewer- he kept the interview moving but didn't talk too much and was really warm. Subscribed.
The Buster/Gob/Tobias comedy ensemble are the 3 funniest characters together on any TV show, ever. But Arrested Development ALSO gave us George Michael, Maeby, George Sr, and Lucille. All super funny as well! And Michael Bluth -- a very funny character in his own right, but the lead/straight man -- tied them all together perfectly. Hardly ever found Lindsey funny; a lot of actresses could have played her (did like her chicken dance though). The rest were irreplaceable.
Agree, but I did like Lindsay and Portia's portrayal of her. She served as more of a conduit for a lot of Tobias' stories as well as some of Maeby's. I do think she was a necessary character and she did have quite a few funny moments
@@protoname_ Portia plays her perfectly. I'm not so sure she would have been easy to replace because there's more going on with Lindsay than meets the eye
Paul, I know this is several years later. But this series is incredible. You are an amazing interviewer. The setting is perfect, and your demeanor really puts people at ease. This venue and format is so much better than anything on late night television.
I love Paul more than ever. Glad I caught onto this show late in the game. :) Lots of amazingly funny genuine interviews to enjoy. Tony Hale is the best. So humble and talented.
Great interview, really good stuff. Devoid of Hollywood fluff. AD fan coming late to VEEP, and I have to say Tony Hale is once again a highlight of the show. JLD is amazing, and Tony is playing on yet another level.
one thing i love about arrested development is how they would load up the screen with sight gags, like the time they were doing an intervention for lucille and they all got drunk and then lucille walks in and buster waves at her from inside the fireplace.
Anyone else really want to know what this blue, gelatenous, liqued that Matt Damon was eating? No? Am I going to get murdered for asking because I shouldn't know? I should call my mom and tell her I love her, shouldn't I?
Great to finally watch a Tony Hale interview! We never hear much from him during AD cast ensemble panels. He's so thoughtful in his replies. Really pleasant to watch.
I'm on S2 Ep11 and so far my favorite Buster moment was after Lucille walked in on him having sex with Lupe, She fired her than bought a robot vacuum. When she couldn't find the vacuum, she went into Buster's room and caught him with the robot in the bed. I laughed for about 20 minutes after that.
Am I the only one that when they see Paul, or Doug Benson, or Rob Hubell *sp*, or Loni Love, etc. all they think is VH1 I love the 70s, 80s, and 90s???? I miss those days.

First time I saw his acting was in Chuck, and even as an antagonist, I just couldn't but love his comedy. One of my all time favorite actors!

Malory Acher Is Malory Acher the actress who plays Lucille Bluth?
Wow, the interviewer is really good! Great questions, nice ability to go with the flow, very good sense of humor.
Oh my god Paul asked about the Matt Damon gel cubes. I love that story from his stand-up. This makes me so happy.

So funny! One of your. Best interviews!
This is his second drink since he was nurcing

Amazing interview. subscribed.
Tony's acting as Buster was so damn convincing. I kept forgetting it wasn't real....
Second best US sitcom ever made. The best is The Larry Sanders Show though. Nothing can touch that.
The Larry Sanders Show is good but Arrested Development is better. Seinfeld is also better.

I'm still wondering what movie he was talking about where he played a manipulative person. It's just so against his "type."

Maybe it was the 11 months in the womb...Doctors say there were crawl marks in the uterus...
What was the drink they were having?
