He's too humble. Tobias is the character I have the most trouble possibly envisioning being pulled off by anyone else. It's one of those totally unique synergies of the perfect actor for a given role.
I'm glad he knew that part wasn't for him. The show was well casted and I feel like every person was perfect for their part, not many shows you can say that about, and I'm glad he fought for his character. It showed he really cared, and knowing it's David cross, it's not really a surprise.
David Cross rules. Some comics come off as fake and then there are ones like David who you know wouldn't sell out or put you down unless you really deserved it.
I guess you never watched Mr. Show? I envy you. You have a literal mountain of comedy gold that you have yet to see. Watch Mr. Show and thank me later.
I have to say Tobias Funke, is my favorite character on AD. My favorite! He makes me laugh so hard. I would love to see more of this character, say in a fathers role. Funny Man.
David D It blue my mind. That wasn't a typo either! As for the comment, it hurts to think about it. I just think it means he was 30 weeks younger in this video than he was 30 weeks before 5 years ago from when this video was posted. Meaning he hasn't aged and looks the same. Come to think of it, I doubt what I said makes any logical sense. I'm not clever enough to figure it out. Maybe Absolute Radio were paying homage to the irreverent style humour of the show?
Billy Roadhouse Potato Elephant Um, yes he does age. He looks a hell of a lot older here than he did on Mr. Show. His facial hair is getting greyer and greyer all the time, his bottom teeth have become misaligned (a common sign of aging if you pay attention). Maybe because he's always been bald, you think he doesn't age, but if you look at everything else, he's aged as much as anyone has in the last 20 years since Mr. Show.

It's not just that he nailed the part, he really puts a lot of subtle gestures, voice changes and so much more making it hilarious. Those comedy "rules" they gave to him are beyond ridiculous, the mustache was perfect
last part about top down decisions never working. Apparently with 'always sunny in philidelphia', The show was going to be axed after the first season but Danny Devito expressed interest in joining. The cast protested, and said you cant fuck with the original chemistry. The Network said its either Danny or the shows axed. They reluctantly agreed and the rest is history.
Always Sunny is such a strange show for so many reasons. No part of it should work in theory, yet all of it is fantastic in practice. It really defies convention
Gail? That's gotta be Gail Berman, who was not just a "producer" but actually president of entertainment at Fox those years. Having won the moustache war against that complete moron is a huge victory because she was NOT any kind of rational person - she is the one who attempted to wreck Futurama, Firefly AND Arrested Development, one of which she successfully did murder and tried to butter it over with sweet words afterwards. Seriously, signing a contract with Fox during her reign was a death sentence for your project unless it was immediately profitable (which character driven stuff rarely is). AD was lucky to even get to be aired in order...
I can't believe that producer or whoever she was had "rules" for men in comedy, and that one of those rules was no facial hair. Someone like that needs a psych assessment. And also needs to not be in charge of humor.
Those rules are obviously stupid, but I think the spirit behind them is to make the performer as expressive as possible - not hiding the face or the body.
So many creators get their work ruined by the process of executives who know best. Takes a special person to be a manager so they don't have to actually do the work.
Te das cuenta que el chabon toma en serio lo que hace, y que verdaderamente le importa. Porque seguramente si elegía un personaje principal iba a ganar más y estar más tiempo en pantalla, y no fue eso lo que le importó. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It's mind boggling to me that people can be this arbitrary and be successful when so much money is on the line. It's not like they wanted him to shave because his face would look better for lighting purposes. It's not like it was a character question - if anything the moustache enhances Cross's depiction of Tobias in a number of ways. It was just because this set-in-her-ways producer just categorically didn't like facial hair in comedy, and was too powerful to be questioned about it.
I’d have loved to see him play Gob, but Tobias was made for him. Feel like he was perfect for both roles really, Gob would’ve been pretty different but it would’ve worked well for him
Wow, I never thought of it before, but maybe that's what initially threw me about Tobias. When I saw the AD pilot last year for the first time, something seemed off about Tobias' character to me, like he didn't belong on screen. When I saw him in his very first scene, I instantly disliked him (came to love him, but... first impressions). Maybe my reaction was being confused by the moustache, because you don't ever see it on comedy shows.
Andrew Rivera He didn't have those in his first scene. I'd already had my impression of him when he was being introduced. It's now been almost two years, but I recall disliking him from the moment his photo was revealed and he was mentioned to be Linday's husband. I'm a big psychology guy, so I'm really interested in the possibility of psychological cues (e.g., mustaches) immediately colouring perceptions of people.
