I completely disagree with you about the elktaur reveal. This is not a twist, this is worldbuilding. MW isn't a main character she's a side character. This was a story about the ripple effects from this one main event, not about the event itself.

I think the series could have been stretched for three seasons, or at least it would have benefitted from a longer season 2.
This way they could have explored more the backstories (they did my boy Zulius so dirty) and set more of Ryder and Horse's world. In the end I didn't care much for the general and it seemed weird that Ryder didn't have anyone close besides her horse.
Also I would have liked more focus on the woman cause she was badass and deserved way more screentime.

Unfortunately, it really seems like the second season was painfully rushing to the finish line at the end due to budget and deadlines. They released the first season only 6 months ago after all. Really would have benefitted from them being able to evaluate their work and polish season 2 by making a few more episodes for it. If they were given a full year and a few extra months I'm sure they could have done it.

Well I think the final episode was meant to be three episodes, hence the fact that it's the length of three episodes. But yeah I'm pretty sure they were super rushed to get the second season out. I mean the first season came out in July this year. My guess is that Netflix wanted it over and done with because it didn't get super popular on their streaming site.

That was my thought. Two seasons just didn't seem like quite enough. I think three would have been ideal but I got the feeling, after watching it, like, there was more they could have done but clearly something prevented it (budget, Netflix, etc). Also, I'm emotionally stuck on the idea of the purple haired lady princess being married to the general for TEN YEARS and the weight of that emotional trauma being so barely brushed over. Also, did she know Elk was there the whole time?! Did she only find out until the end? She said she knew they'd divided but how? ...and this is why, in the likely near future, I'm going to have to do some fanfiction I was not anticipating. -.-

In defence of Rider refusing to kill the general, Horse did a shit job at explaining why it needed to be done. I was much more hung up over how much information Horse was withholding; her talk literally amount to _"we gotta kill him, trust me trust me"_, when it could have been so easy to summarize the Nowhere King's relation to the General.
With so little information, Rider's scepticism was legitimate. To me she was just respecting the chain of command or something.

The Centaurs seem to remember the other side just fine, since all the Shaman know about the gate and many characters remember the war (and are actively hiding their trauma of it).
The human side is weirder about this, because Rider seems completely blindsided about it. Yes, presumably she was born a little while after the rift went down, but surely there would be cultural and historical knowledge of Centaurworld?
My fan theory is that the General suppressed all knowledge of Centaurworld among humans because he wanted to distance himself from his past. Remember, the entire show starts because he's trying to get his hands on the artifact, probably because he wants to hide it away somewhere so it can never be used to open the rift again.

I was disappointed that Horse was kept in her Centaurworld form rather than being a blend of both forms - such as resembling her old tough warhorse appearance but still having the white nose stripe blaze, brighter coloured coat, rainbow tears & talking tail. As I never liked the fact that she was essentially forced to accept her Centaurworld form because it was irreversibly permanent (apart when she entered the Elktaur’s memories - making it even more disappointing that she came back out of them still chibified 😑)

I loved season one, especially the music. I actually CRIED during "what if I forget your face" and got chills during "who is she" and its reprise. One big issue with season 2 is that there isn't any connection to the music. The songs felt like they were 30 seconds long, there were no reprises (other than season one stuff) and none of the songs had the deep, gut-wrenching tone and lyrics needed to be comparable with s1 songs. Even in the last episode. (Spoilers) if they had just tied all of the princess's and elktaur's songs together throughout that episode, it would have been more cohesive. Instead, I can't remember a single s2 song.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Every song in season 1 had an emotion and either a character or plot moment. A lot of the seas 2 songs come out of nowhere, the golden ripule of musicals is that your characters start singing when there’s to much emotion to talk and season 1 nailed this.

exactly, I think this disappointed me the most since I adored the music in fhe first season and really helped with capturing the emotions of the story. but in the second season, with a majority of the songs being reprised from s1, it felt like the show was just trying to remind me of the feelings i had in s1 instead of trying to build new ones

I think that they could have dropped the first 4 episodes of Horse in Centaurworld and replaced them with Rider in the human world. Because like you said, Horse got to achieve her best self in season 1. Maybe the show could focus on Rider's insecurities with Horse choosing her herd over her and (my headcanon here) how people she feels close to always leave/die. I thought it was weird that Rider had no close human friends in season 2. She would confront her fear of losing people and bond with the apple thieves + the General. The increased screentime would make the General's betrayal feel more impactful and particularly devastating to Rider.

    • @Singingshadowgirl
      @Singingshadowgirl 2 роки тому +60

Agree; they could have at least done more flashes over to Rider, let her be the B plot in those episodes. They had a decent set up for Rider having almost a father daugther want from the General, and if they expanded on it, that reveal would have been so much more impactful- along with her unwillingness to believe horse feeling less--- in denial? or mean? Idk, that scene just didn't hit right for me.

    • @augustday9483
      @augustday9483 2 роки тому +40

Yeah Rider was sorely lacking character development and screentime, I believe. Aside from Horse caring for her, we never really get an opportunity to dive into what sort of person Rider is, and how the situation is affecting her.
We know she's a child soldier who lost her parents to minotaurs. There's a lot of potential there that could be expanded upon. The apple theives were kinda interesting even though they only showed up for like 5 minutes and contributed nothing to the plot; how about they become friends with Rider over a couple episodes and actually help her infiltrate the minotaur fortress? How about Rider spends more time with the general, and as Squicade said, he starts to become something like a father figure to Rider and she bonds with him over that. That'd be very interesting, and would make the betrayal during the finale WAY more impactful.

Definitely, more time on the human world would have given much more impact to the season end and twist. It would also help the world-building, which felts lacking this season.

I was about to say! I really like how sad and almost pitiful the Nowhere King’s backstory is that it makes you feel sorry for him, yet you know what’s coming to him. It makes you feel sympathy for him, but it still keeps you away from wishing for a redemption arc. What he did was horrible and no redemption arc could “fix” it. He really was just a tormented soul who hated himself so much.

SPOILER/ Nowhere King ending good parallel for Horses Story
I Feel like the twist with the General worked due to how it represents self hatred that the Elk centaur had for himself. The General and the Elk are the SAME BEING but the human half had so much disdain and disgust for its animal counterpart that her tried to drown it and then, when he realized it wouldn't work, PUT HIS ANIMAL SELF IN A CAGE WITH NO LIGHT AND NO ROOM TO STAND FOR 10 YEARS! (Can you imagine hating yourself that much!) They hinted that the Elk centaur resented being a centaur because th centaurs never took anything seriously and the humans just viewed them as help but the lengths the Elk centaur went to in the short time he was on screen was frightening and very moving in a very empathetic way. The Princess said it best in the final lullaby- he is a pitiful creature.
The Elk Centaurs story also connects back to Horse and her transformation and relationship to Rider. Horse bever doubted that she and Rider were equals UNTIL her body became less tough and strong and more squishy and cutetsy. Horse learns to love her squishy body second season (lamenting it when she reverts back to her buff self in the Nowhere Kings mind) and trusts in the fact that Rider will still know her and love her no matter what form she takes. Horse had her doubts and depression from these changes but confirmation from her herd is what kept her strong.
The Elk Centaur never felt connected to the other Centaurs nor did he feel good enough for the humans which is why, aside from obviously going mad being locked in a cage, he made horrible choices based on his insecurities before eventually becoming the monster that is the Nowhere King.

There is no way Rider would trust in the General more than Horse, especially since she didn't even know what he looked like until a few days ago and Horse had just got out of visiting the Nowhere King's mind. Honestly, the twist just made me wonder more about TNK and his goals. Like, I rewatched the rift pt2 and came to realize that I have no idea what he wants. In the rift, his only goal was to leave, which makes sense considering how he's been isolated and locked up for god knows how long. When Magic lady shows up, he basically surrenders to her, thinking she will 'set him free', what free means is varied. He was willing to die by her hand. Even when he traps her, he's incredibly gentle compared to all the other times he did so.
In season 2, however, we have no clue what his goals are. He makes monsters but as far as I can tell, doesn't attack anyone. His minotaurs did when he was trapped but I don't know if they did in season 2. The only time anyone was hurt on the human side was when the general attacked him. Even in the flashback, there is no clear explanation as to what TNK was actually doing. The general orchestrated a war just to maintain 'balance' but at this point, it feels like TNK was defending himself, creating an army to keep from being imprisoned again.
I'm pretty sure that's not the impression the show is going for since they present TNK as the big bad. But as far as I can tell, he hasn't done anything proactively so...

TBH, had they spent just one episode with rider and the general, telling the story from his perspective on the realm before the war, his love for the Princess and the war, it would have gives much more weight to the ending, given some necessary characterization to rider and added some needed world building.

My only opinion that is spoiler-free about season 2 is: RUSHED. I don't know if it was fault of the team, or maybe of Netflix giving them not enough time and resources... but it all feel very rushed in the last episoded and how some charcters development is either non-existent or very quick-done even in singular scenes in the first episoded where there are also very dragged comedic scenes that in the complex felt like robbed time from more important plot points, which would not be a problem if they had then more episoded to balance off with them... and then the animations... oh boy, in season 1 I was so hooked on the quality of animations even in the more comedic and the little details...
    ON A SPOILER NOTE:
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ...
they sure did Wammawink dirty this season... they kinda saved Glendale with the cold-taur episode and her backsory, but I feel like they could've explored more the whole "voice in the tummy-portal" to truely express at the best her "funny but deeply unsettingly clever character" bit...
I stan the hate for Derpelton... his backstory was very well done but the whole "parent of lizard minotaur" was really weird and half cooked at the beginning only to be pretty good in a snap of fingers at the end...
and Rider should've stayed dead... the whole ending song felt a bit weird for me, seeing her well, alive and happy felt more strange than heartwarming... but oh man if the Nowhere King backstory was so good, they really could have used more time to flash out the General so that we could care more about him in the big reveal...

    Spoiler alert ⚠
So I have a note about your #1 problem with the finale:
So personally the way I received the messaging of The No Where King's human half getting zero character development goes back to the song The No Where King sang right before he separated himself from being a centaur "Draw out the beast, part of me. Let it find a way of it's own. My body can no longer be it's home." contrary to the No Where King's belief the "beast" part of him was never the Elk, it was the human, the general, the one who gave into carnal desires of lust and greed, and so tried to murder his other half, and upon finding out it wouldn't work imprisoned and torchered his other half, and then blamed him for the abuse by calling him "gross", those moments were the generals character development, as little as we were lead to care about him is exactly how we should feel about him, because he is and always was the true beast, the reason that Rider felt differently is because it's the only way she knows how to feel, it can be nearly impossible to accept that everything you've ever known and fought for was a lie, no matter how little you personally know your leader.

    • @Nightengale90

Totally agree with all you just said! The General really was the 'beast' in the end!

I guessed that Rider wouldn't die, but that's because I thought Stabby was FORESHADOWING. Stabby was..stabbed. In the first episodes, its clearly dead, limp and unresponsive except when the knife got removed and replaced. Then it starts struggling, finally even talking. We know one of Horse's first signs of being affected by Centaurworld magic was talking. When Stabby transforms like Horse did, he can remove and replace the knife in his back as he pleases. And how did the General 'kill' Rider? By stabbing her.
It seemed to make sense so when she was just revealed to be fine, no explanations, that was a plot twist to me.

Of course, this is all disregarding the final few episodes and the big finale, which I absolutely loved! Only thing about the finale I didn't like was the fakeout with Rider's death. Like seriously, you have this whole, VERY moving and very powerful song that is very much setting up that Rider is dying, and then have her appear to straight up DIE ON SCREEN (NGL I straight up gasped when that happened)... and then next scene she's fine except for a bandage on her head?! Where Wammawink is always the one who protects and provides and nurtures and comforts but she's feeling low and cast aside for most of the season but no one every comforts or provides for her. I kept waiting for Horse to stop being so ego centric and notice Wammawink is ALSO going through it (I really thought the Becky&Jeffica song was foreshadowing about that) and comfort her, but it just never happened. My only real problem with that is due to how obsessive The General is with the Woman, they would also have to make her the mother, and I can see how they wouldn't really want to do that.
Plus, I won't lie, it is pretty refreshing having characters who are unrelated to the Big Bad, and are more dealing with the after effects. At this point nearly everyone has to do that in some manner.

If given the time I feel as if they could of had something more complete?
The nowhere kings story, for me, would have been a lot more inpactful. If they might have showed him, the real conditions of the cell. Try and put us in the headspace through horse, and her magic powers of dreams (past)
Seeing her even briefly struggle in there, or start to go crazy or just even a little upset with noises that wont stop.
I understand love makes you do crazy things, but flat out genocide and avoiding your mirror self? Too much

The first 4 or so episodes; my friends and I really felt the drag.
I think the lack of character development and connection to the darker elements/mystery of the world really hurt those episodes. Same with the songs.
Like I really enjoyed some of the reprises- it made the first and second season feel really connected- but it always felt like songs didn't commit hard enough or just stopped to soon.
I did quite enjoy the finale and the Last Lullaby felt like the major song hit for me; which thank goodness-- very important moment for a song to hit.
Precedent I did really like the near return to form of the later half of the season, the return to form was nice, but man, I really wish we got more of Woman and the mystery before the finale. Just an inkling of it per episode maybe.
Even using Horse's backstory magic throughout the first few episodes would have been more. Then we could get a closer look at her interacting with each of the herd, changing how she interacts with them, and a highlight on that consent issue that Wammawink brought up! Serious boundaries were crossed, and they could have done a really neat argument/look at "when is it worth it to cross a friend/someone's comfort zone? Is it ever worth it?"

That last lullaby song though before the witch ends the villain...holy shit I have that on repeat. I cried over and over again.

For season 2.. I spent so much of the time looking at it and going What the Actual Fuck is Happening rn. It definitely had some moments that made me laugh and all but the songs were like... Lol look we're so silly let's have this music as the characters basically just talk lololol.
But, the finale genuinely made it worth it for me! The mentions of the general in the first one did show a bit more loyalty but that can easily be missed. The twist genuinely got means I thought it was clever still.
I agree it definitely wasn't as good and the songs were DEFINITELY lacking but I still loved the finale

In the Nowhere King's origin in the flashback scene back when he was a centaur, who was in love with this woman and though he could seperate himself so he could be human but things didn't turn out as he plans. So I guess the General is the true villian in this series all along.

I feel like even a few more lines from Horse and Rider just admiring the General, talking about his feats in battle, maybe even a funny hint where Horse is talking about him and the herd is horrified at the violence but Horse is in complete awe as she recounts his deeds and that would have made the twist hit a little harder because he has some sort of reputation

Season two songs really dropped the ball till the last two episodes. I can barely remember what any of them were about unlike the first season where i still sing and listen to them all the time.

I wanted to love season 2 as much as I loved season 1, but I've had a hard time for basically all the reasons you gave. I feel like you get it! It's like they wanted to skip ahead to the climax, remembered we need a middle to get from beginning to end, and then spent time on all the wrong, most irrelevant things. I don't remember any of the new songs, and I felt like no one really learned anything new. It's a messy conclusion to something that started so strong...just like my first drafts haha! But I love the show and I love the characters and world. It's been a while since something has felt like it was made with me specifically as the target audience, and I loved feeling that within the first 5 minutes of the very first episode.

Why wasn't the themes of the finale prevalent throughout the entire show. Centaurworld is at its best when the two world's aesthetics and themes are juxtaposed against one other. They had the opportunity to cut away to the human world at any time but only used it in I think two episodes pre finale? Three if you count the one fully in human world? They could've easily replaced more of the meandering plots of early season 2 with more B story to set up Rider and General.

I loved the finale and the twist so so much, that was an Epic piece of storytelling. But I agree with SarChor, I do think about the fact that if we had been given more time with the General as a father figure to Rider, then that gut punch would have been boosted to soul destroying. I wouldn't have just been crying, I would have been on the verge of hysterics. Still can't believe that a show with that many fart jokes (including the Elks introduction in NKs mind!!) pulled off such an incredible finale.

i binged the first season right before i watched the 2nd and yeah the first couple of episodes weren't my favourite either i would have loved it if they spend more time during those episodes with rider and with horse and ched forming some kind of friendship that doesn't involve backstory magic,,,they could have also given whammawink a conflict with the war storyline since she is a war orphan

The last episode i didn't like very much because how rushed it felt. I would loved to have a new song for the nowhere king and maybe find out how Doug found all those mini's or at least some explanation.

I don't have a problem with not caring about the general. The backstory wasn't really a story about the General. It seemed more like a story about the nowhere king and his perception of the general.

    • @Folomus

But without a perspective on the general, we are missing half of the picture of our villain. :/

    • @leaf2690
      @leaf2690 2 роки тому

@@Folomus I don't see the story as hero vs villain. I see it as character development explicitly contrasted against fear and stagnation. That's been the main theme since episode 1, and the Nowhere King is literally a stag.
I don't even think it's a twist for an unknown character like the general (or even rider) to behave a bit chaotically.

Yeahh season 1 was way better, i wish the sad moments it had werent interrupt by comedy so often thats what it felt like anyways.
But there is a few things i liked about this season like Glendale she is totally my fav so i was satisfied with the moments they have her, she got more screentime this season than s1 and a longer solo song so im satisfied with her lol same with Ched and i liked how they gave him more depth, Durpleton and stabby where really adorable for me their relationship might be weird but also very cute, i also like how they also showed the human world in some episodes but i didnt like how they did Wammawink this season did the person who worked on the episodes dislike wammawink or what? seriously she deserved better smh specially in that second episode (which was terrible i really hated that episode) it feels like they went backward in her character arch they did her dirty, and the final? holy shit it was so good i dont mind it was very long, the nowhere king backstory was very deep and you could at least feel some sympathy for him, i felt so bad for the elk (spoilers ahead) also its heartbreaking that the woman was the one who killed him since all the backstory they had together it just made it more hurtful at least for me.
And Rider death? i was sobbing so hard when horse was holding her and singing it broke my heart but then a few seconds later we learn that she was still alive?? what?? so all that was for nothing? im sorry but i do think that leaving Rider death would have been impactful but yeahh this are just my thoughs i dont think there is gonna be a season 3 sadly because i did wanted to see this characters more
