  • The Future of Life Award honors those whose overlooked actions have steered humanity away from disaster. Read more about the award here: futureoflife.org/future-of-li...
The 2022 Award goes to eight heroes who helped to reduce the risk of nuclear war, by catalyzing, developing, and popularizing the science of nuclear winter.
In the event of a nuclear war, smoke and soot, lofted into the stratosphere by nuclear firestorms and spread around the world by jet-streams, would block enough sunlight to create a ‘nuclear winter’, devastating global agriculture. Scientists predict that the resulting famine and civilizational collapse would kill most people on Earth.
This video tells the story of this discovery. It’s a story of how the world learnt that nuclear war’s impacts were even worse than we previously thought, but it’s also a story of hope, of scientific discovery, collaboration and outreach bringing about positive political change. After all, it was the bilateral scientific acceptance of nuclear winter which helped persuade both Gorbachev and Reagan to reduce their nuclear arsenals.
Decades after that reduction of arsenals, Nuclear Winter has unfortunately faded from public consciousness. But by remembering the work of these pioneering minds, we can better inform future decisions and hold our leaders accountable.

Every article reporting on calls for escalation over Ukraine and Taiwan should IMHO comment on what would actually happen if things went nuclear, and ask what's being done to reduce this risk. The less we talk about nuclear winter, the more likely we are to create one.

A bit of a disconnect there Max, the US is not going to give any such weapons to the Fascists running Ukraine, nor is Russia going to use theirs in any scenario in Ukraine. Please don't diminish your standing with random fear mongering. I had a college roommate in 76 who left MIT because the whole place is one giant defense contractor, I wonder what you think your machine learning is for but military application? Helping single mothers pay for a root canal rather than having an extraction?

@@johnsmith1474 Russia is becoming more desperate and procuring ICBMs to use in Ukraine, as a result the US is deploying Patriot missile defense systems and no Ukrainian can operate these systems without years of training so, it will have to be Americans operating them. Nuclear war is an inevitable consequence of conventional war with Russia, it'll start with tactical nuclear weapons and quickly escalate to strategic. In every DOD simulation, this is the end result when tactical nuclear are used either side.

It's because nuclear winter is bullsh!t. Its premise is false since it's based on data from volcanic eruptions which are chemically completely different animals to fires caused by nuclear blasts. Also, the amount of nuclear weapons tested in the atmosphere during the 50's should have caused noticeable cooling if the hypothesis had any grounding in reality, which it doesn't, the best comparisons we have are forest fires, which don't cause cooling.

I've been aware of this for 40 years, so find it sad that many people haven't heard about it or need a refresh. Maybe we should put the whole world on pause to view this and internalize the message? The nice cosmopolitan accent in this video certainly makes the message palatable. It's clear as a fractal when you look at boxers get into a ring that eventually punches are going to be thrown, so we're not in a good position with all of these ultra-powerful weapons moving into the future. (By the way, today's news informs us that there was yet another mass killing in the USA today - it's only a matter of time before something happens. When not if.

@@gameragodzilla Disarmament of Nuclear warheads can't be realised by one such state. No such state would be willing. It has to be realised across the globe. You are right in saying that 'science to build nukes exist', but so does the science to build biological weapons exist. The difference is bio weapons are non existent (one can say that). It is all about the state will to get rid of Nuclear warheads, like bio weapons. Nuclear war isn't war with swords. It has the potential to wipe out human race (MAD). World won't be at peace unless and until we have WMDs free World!

@@tyrepiste What are you talking about? Covid-19 exists because of a Chinese bio weapon lab, even if they just call it “gain of function research”. Also, Saddam used chemical weapons against the Kurds in Iraq back in the 90’s.
The only reason chemical and biological WMDs aren’t as common anymore is simply because nuclear weapons are way better, so resources are spent building and maintaining those. It has nothing to do with “will”. If nukes didn’t exist, we’d be pointing lots of biological and chemical weapons at each other.

The 2nd time I walked outside today, I was IMMEDIATELY hit by burning nostrils and the horrendous smell one gets when working around Clorox too long. It immediately went away when I came back indoors. Window about 20ft away remains opened.

I have been hit several times with energies that made ZONE OUT & DIZZY; phone was also interfered with. In ways, made me think of several BLASTS.
Thus far TODAY, I've NOT received energies that knock me out, as if I was in surgery, like happened several times yesterday.
I have yet to resume the various things which did my blood so well these last years. Perhaps within the next week or two?

OH ... I came here after touching a researcher in video I recently shared about Mississippi River.
Possibly 2016 is when John at the Crossroads told me that water in this general area of state, or possibly just below the dam, tested FAR WORSE than the problems in Michigan.

Frankly, the sense of cosmopolitan common interest, presented here has been lost after the Cold War - having been replaced with another wave of ideological zeal that turns military conflict within the context of a 'security competition' into *_a war of religion_* .
The current question can't be, anymore how to demonstrate the low survivability and thereby folly of nuclear procurement and deployment - but solely _'how to bypass deterrence'_ and _'how to mitigate the effects of nuclear winter'_ for a sufficient portion of a population - much the way, how e.g. Isaac Asimov had imagined his 'Foundation' series...
That is *_what we will be going to do_* - not negotiating any conflict of interests or an outright 'othering'.
