“What’s the first thing I should do to improve my voice?” - I get this question A LOT. There are so many things you could do, but I’m going to make the case that it's NOT starting with "dialing in your support". We first have to figure out the NEED for proper support. Put simply, you need to get a gauge for 'demand' before you provide the 'supply'. Simple vocal economics :) Join me as I show you how to expose what you need to FEEL in your own voice so that you know exactly how to take your singing to the next level!

since ive started this journey into mastering my voice ive noticed that when you sing something original, not scripted or from an existing song, what comes out tends to always be pure, its like you speak from your soul
Yes, VERY true in my voice as well! And it's true for every singer who sings their original stuff. They can write and perform to their voice's strengths!
When you sing a known song, you have pre-conceived ideas of how to sing the song. When it's your creation, you don't care. You just do whatever you like to do. Personally, I like to play 2 or 3 chords on my guitar in a blues style where I can sing a wide range of pitch and intense bits followed by quieter ones.
I'm definitely in the category of people who were told "don't sing this way" I started with guttural/scream style death metal vocals then had to sing clean for college so started to take a few vocal lessons (free with someone the college brought in) straight away she focused on the pitch, it really stuck mentally and now I'm 10years out of college having to reteach myself to "not care" so much...
so many pitches I think I can't hit then I play on guitar and hit the exact same note when working out guitar riffs, my girlfriend noticed this before I did, spent a while trying to explain the way I was taught, it really screwed with my confidence over the clean singing making me limit myself even more just to "play it safe"
we started to compare it to my guitar playing (I'm a guitarist first) and she noticed I don't think/overthink my guitar playing and that's what I need to do with my voice, just relax and have fun with it, if it sounds silly so what it'll build confidence

I tried very actively to teach myself guitar in high school over 10 years ago, cause I assumed my baritone voice was shit for the music I liked, so I wouldn't ever sing anyways. I only took some singing lessons when I tried to get into acting. I got back to it a couple years ago. I would just sing basically every day whenever I was bored and I didn't care that I couldn't hit some notes or that I sang an octave too low. Just found it relaxing and tried my best. Now some people actually tell me I sing well although I never get complimented on my guitar skills. And to my surprise I sometimes find myself at a studio, jamming with people, and I'm the one to sing, cause everyone else only knows how to play guitar.
First UA-cam comment ever lol. I’m 38. Been singing since I was 5. Trained in choral music. Been playing and singing support in rock bands for the past 18 years. Current band of 10 years has had some success and billboard charting songs. Stumbled on your channel today and just want to say thank you. I’ve had a lot of coaches and teachers over the year’s here at home and nobody can help me understand and support adding a more aggressive tone to my choral voice. Watching a few of your videos has given me hope and gotten me excited about singing and progressing again. Haven’t felt like this since I was 20. Thank you for putting all of this out there to help me and others like me!

Mr. Chris idk if you read this or not, but i want you to know. i've learning from your videos for almost 2 months , doin the steps , *even though my brother said your method was really hillarious 😂 finally i can do some false chord scream and grit voice without hurting my vocal folds.. for anyone who come to this channel, i recommend you to learn from this channel. i always find that if i try and think about hitting high notes , I always tense up, but if I don't think of them as high and use a lower part of the throat but the same key, its effortless.
Well i sound good while i sing without recording myself on my phone but on phone i sound like am dying

@@blueifyy Also watch Chris's video on setting up a compressor in a DAW and generally how to set up your mic/audio. It makes a HUGE difference to how you sing and sound.
I spent a lot of time confused why i couldnt pass from low notes to higher ones easier just like you do in the song until i realized i could mix head voice and chest voice in a conscious manner, i was using brute force to get there, once i lightened up my voice goin up it was a world of difference, its easier to get stuck on the notion that power only comes from a chestier tone and neglect head voice, once you start aproaching voice like just another instrument you get new levels of control, its incredible the power your mind exerts on this process, for me this was one of those breakthrus

I think I am always experimenting with my voice even if I am not rehearsing. This really helps me, because I don't set myself under pressure. during my next rehearsal I already have some improvements.

Inspired by you I started reading out loud some random text like news articles as a part of my head voice warm up going from head voice to chest voice and vice versa like in this video. It sounds utterly silly but it really seems to work at the same time :D

Ok.... A couple things I've noticed about myself...
**Some notes I can sing in both "voices". How do you choose which to use?
**How do we change to another voice on the same phrase without cracking and without changing volume? B/c certain parts of my range I can just put out more volume. That's been my main issue my entire life. And yes I'm supporting.

I'm trying to learn how to sing since a while but I didn't notice a lot of improving on my voice... until I discover your channel ! I really love how you explain how to sing with pictures (not just : "Do this sound and that's it"). I already feel better, with a stronger head and chest voice.

It would be awesome to see you explore Steven Wilson's voice. I always thought his style of singing seemed so effortless until i tried singing some of his material. He has a certain control over his voice that seems practical yet maybe there's something more behind his voice that i don't know. Songs such as Trains from Porcupine Tree or Hand Cannot Erase from his solo are some prime examples.
Regardless, great videos, super practical and informative , keep up the good work.
On the prog side of things would love to see Chris tackle the many sides of Mikael Akerfeldt as well. That man has a gorgeous and powerful baritone but capable of amazing restraint too. Not to forget his pretty falsetto and his infamous death metal scream.

One observation in my mixed voice
I'm still kinda learning to control and I know I cannot go higher than c5 but thats not the point. The notes that I sing high become raspy. So I'm wondering if there is a way to avoid that unhealthy rasp or is it because my voice is damaged a bit or not warmed up?
most likely warming up will help that. I know it does for me BIG TIME

Hey Chris! Great stuff as usual! Your approach is so accessible and just makes sense. Love learning from you. I do have one question: how you get proper articulation while in your head voice? I find that the pronunciation of my words can lose shape and structure a little when I’m in head voice.

Hi Chris, I can reach my vocal fry whether high or low but I can't turn it into a scream and in fact end up hurting my throat (I can do false cord screams, however). Do you have any tips for how I can make that transition easily?
Hi Erkut, I think I can help you. I understand you've learned how fry works. The idea of fry is a good starting point but how to make the scream is a different concept with the element of fry. Chris always talks of bearing down and really pushing from your stomach (poop muscles as he often refers to.) Take a deep breath and block it from coming out in your throat. If you push really hard from your abs and let go a little of the block sensation in your throat, some powerful air should come out. If you add the fry on that, you should be able to scream. Place it right though, drink lots of water, and try to relax your throat aswell, intense is great but tension not so much. Good luck!

How do you feel about vertical vs horizontal breathing
I think the natural approach is to focus on output instead of intake but keep your posture in check... then let your breath happen. :)
When you are singing in your headphones is it low enough that you can hear yourself in the room in those semi opens? Or is the vocal quite loud, if you can hear both do they not sort of compete while tracking?

If I didn't have severe anxiety (can't sing in front of people (even parents)) issues I would challenge you, I would be your white whale that made you die feeling like a failure as a teacher .... ha as I'm writing this i'm hearing "wait, don't judge yourself,," then I hear 'him' from powerpuff girls say "wait for me and I'll wait for you..." Seriously though I can't sound this bad because I think people are listening and laughing ... they are but that's besides the point, how do you not care? that's what I need to learn from you the most. I hold back and my throat tightens and now I think I have serious polyps because of cookie monster singing :( and will most likely end up sounding like a seagull very soon if I don't learn proper technique. I can't do live video even if I had monies but I can send a video for you to laugh at with your friends?

Hi Chris, I have a question, when I'm singing almost always after singing instantly or after a while I feel my throat a little hot, is that normal? what am I doing wrong?
Heat is GOOD.. just not discomfort or pain!
Some of that is normal, but it sounds like a vocal placement issue! Have you checked out my free voice course? I go into more of that there! It’s linked here in the description of this video.

Another great video! I was lucky to find this channel back before it had 10000 subs, and I believe that I have seen nearly every video. I am so much greater of a vocalist for it! I can sing nearly anything I want, and my vocal coach told me that I am a first baritone (she's also great, a very open minded vocalist, especially when it comes to range.) Both of these singers are VERY dynamic, and emotional as well. I'm not sure what the legalities/permissions regarding reacting to The Voice performances on UA-cam are, but if it works! I would love to see your take!
