    Through all your videos I've learned that a lot of the most well-known singers tend to do a lot of things people usually tell you isn't "desirable" when singing, like being nasal and making "ugly" sounds, like the crow voice you mentioned here. You're the only vocal coach I trust because your not afraid of these things

    Freddie was a very dynamic singer, he used a lot of different colours and textures within his voice. He almost never, just sang a phrase, he usually added something to it. He was fantastic at interpreting music. The dynamic use of his voice along with his interpretation for music, tone and the power in his voice are the reason he is the best. There are thousands of singers who can hit good high or low notes, hitting a note does not make you a great singer. The way in which you interpret your music and your emotional expression are what makes you a truly great singer. I would have liked to see songs from the 80's as well, because Freddie changed his style from the 70's to the 80's and he changed again in the 90's.

    The thing with Freddie and his dynamic in his voice will be harder for some people to reproduce is because Freddie was all about feeling and delivery of the song. He didn't really think about technique. First learn the notes light, after you can hit them easily give your full emotion to the song, which is musicality what not everybody has.

    Chris,
    your Free Voice Lessons were incredibly awesome and I had a lot of fun watching you and trying these exercises.
    I´ve had singing lessons in prep for a lead role in a musical production our school did over the course of the last year.
    The shows went great and I was able to hit a bunch of f4s on stage pretty easily, but I found myself struggling with said pitches ever after. However...
    At the end of the 3rd video of your FREE COURSE I was singing f#4s with ease. You even got some g4s out of me before my passagio kicked in. lol
    But those were EASILY THE BEST ONLINE SINGING lessons I´ve had so far.
    Thank you soooo much!

    I’m a lifelong, diehard Queen fan. Freddie’s voice is pure power. It’s like he didn’t know what to do with it half the time. It was just so aggressive and dynamic. Brian May said when Freddie would double his vocals, he would sing so perfectly in tune with himself that he would phase the dub out. So he would have to purposely sing slightly out of tune to keep that doubled effect. Crazy. On another note, listen to Freddie’s voice gradually become damaged over the course of their albums. When you get towards the end, his compressed head voice vocals are much more obvious than his early years when he could still belt higher notes. This is super apparent in their live at Wembley album where he sang completely different notes to stay away from the higher register.

    • @KentStJohn-vn6bq
      @KentStJohn-vn6bq 4 роки тому

      Didn’t know that about the smoking, but who’s to say he wasn’t doing more of this compressed falsetto on some of those tracks? Especially Hitman. I always attributed his damage and limited range from strain, not smoking, but maybe it was a combination of both.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 3 роки тому

      Wembley is bad example he was sick at that show, he was sick and did 2 conceptive shows. Queen 1986 Magic tour was actually very good. Your voice changes over time, and especially male voices. People think because Freddie's voice had that light and youth sound in the 70's that he was singing very high, he wasn't really that high. His voice was just high pitched. His vocal range improved in the 80's. He voice gained a lot more weight and power. That not vocal damage. Queen's style also changed, they did a lot stadiums in the 80's. It is difficult to even hear yourself on such a large stage, and when you running all around the stage. Freddie preferred more chest voice belting. He could belt higher chest notes during this time in the 70's.
      In the 90's he was dying, his voice lost some of it's power, but he recorded his highest chest notes just before death. Freddie is one of the few singers who never lost any range in his voice, despite the fact that his voice became far more heavier. He went from a lyric tenor to a dramatic tenor.

    I think these tips are for advanced singer, who have a good foundation already, because if you haven't it's easy to damage your voice and health trying to make that "crow" voice and other things. For example, I often go falcetto before in some of his parts, when originally there was more powerful mixed voice, because i was affraid to singing these higher parts based on chest voice. So main tip for singing Freddie's songs is to have a strong chest main voice and if you're unstable in that, then you are in trouble and it is better to not trying his tricks without a good foundation.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 роки тому +27

      Well, Freddie does this on some of the examples I’m using in this video so it’s probably more pronounced than usual, but when I’m practicing I do this consciously to ground my voice in my chest resonance. It’s kinda like working a muscle in it’s full range of motion. Keeps things flexible and well oiled. :)

      Well, when you're singing, there's a lot of tension put on your rib cage, and you're letting the air out very slowly. That's how Support is done., Especially when you're singing very intense notes like a belting or whatever. So when you're finished, all that tension gets her released , and that's the result. It comes out all at once. All the air that you were holding back so you could push it out gradually against your vocal cords.

    Nice. I'm going to make Freddie covers of popular songs now while wearing a Tim Burton outfit and rocking the "banana tree" wig.
    Also, 18:22 made me tear up... Definitely rare for a sort of expressionless nerd like me. That hurt in all the right ways.

    Thank you so much. I've been researching this for a while and all the videos i find are people who have an opinion on how to do it with no actual idea.
    your breakdown hits all the right points i was looking for that go from the rasp to falsetto and choices and why he used each at that time. I'd love to see a follow up of this one

    People talk about Freddie's voice as if it were a consistent thing, but, anyone who followed the band's album progression, as each album was released over the years, would note that Freddie's voice changed...
    Fellow Queen fans who watched them live and heard their albums consecutively upon release debate when the change happened, but for me Freddie's voice was 'purer' in earlier albums, and the his trademark 'growl' seems different, sometime between Night at the Opera and Day at the Races I think Freddie's voice was developing his 'growl'...in the previous albums Freddie's rasping rocking growl seemed to be similar to the way other singers of the day produced their hard rock sound singing...I'm not sure what's going on, but for me to get that sound I'm 'distorting' my voice via the back of the mouth/top of throat.
    His later stuff seemed to be more and more a different quality of raspy growl, which I think is what is being represented in this video...I've read in other places that some of his signature tones resemble throat-singing from parts of the world...and I do believe that is what the majority of his later sound was about.
    That said, I remember in an interview somewhere, it was a write up in a magazine, I think, where Freddie had stated that he took up smoking to give his voice more growl, and improve his lower registers sound...wish I could remember where it was that I read it.
    I remember when he took up smoking he mentioned in the Fan Club magazine that a lot of people said he'd ruin his voice with smoking, but in the Fan Club magazine he said that it was a load of bull! He didn't mention singing specifically in the Fan Club article, but said he'd taken up a "a bad habit...smoking" and that he took the habit up because everyone around him smoked.
    The thing is, though, that the late Jim Hutton (Freddie's husband) had said a few times that Freddie really "chain-lit" cigarettes, rather than "chain-smoke" them, and that although it looked like Freddie smoked a lot, really he didn't actually inhale a lot...and that it seemed to be a nervous habit to keep having one alight.

    Great video it helped me make me sound better like Freddie mercury now i think there won't be another Freddie mercury because you need the same genetics as freddie but you need to stand up and not necessarily scream but push all the air you have and know you're limit and listen to you're voice if you don't you can damage your voice
