It’s a BMW, the upcoming repair costs were probably more than the impound bill which is more than the value of the car! I’m sorry, but it’s probably true.
for those who are curious about how he got into the trunk, if you take off the rear license plate lights you'll see a plastic cover inside. use a long metal tool like a screwdriver and pivot the left side of it to expose a thick cable on the right side. you need to get some leverage on the cable with the screwdriver and yank on it. that will open the trunk manually.
Pro tip. On a Beemer with a working battery you have to press the main unlock button first. Some cars have it in the middle of the dash and some are by the shifter on the center console. You press that first then pull the inside handle. If the battery is dead just pull the inside handle. You can pull on the inside handle all day and it won't open until you hit the unlock button first if the battery is good. On really old ones that are double locked or have vacuum locks, good luck. :) I'm an automotive locksmith. EDIT: Just watched more. Hitting the button alone doesn't open it. You still have to pull the inside handle so this was completely normal. Usually if the battery is dead they will open just pulling on the inside handle. I'm thinking the battery wasn't 100% dead. I never had one not open if the battery was completely dead or disconnected.

I appreciate the way you try and save cars. The ‘throw away’ world we live in doesn’t need to be that way. Keeping up with the jonses is why our landfills are full of almost perfectly usable items.
I commend you for making the decision to save this one. It's much nicer to see a car return to usefulness and have it driven. Of course, we wont get to see things disassembled today but you're doing the right thing. Love the channel and wish we could see more video's but I understand that you have a business to run and that takes priority over everything else.... except your family lol.
That laughter of triumph after it started brought back some OLD memories. When I was young, I used to enjoy messing with cars. And I definitely remember that feeling and laughter. 😊 It's been a long time. Thanks so very much! 😅
I always found it easier to get cars open by going for the door on the opposite side that is wedge open. you can see what your doing and its real easy to get hooked on the door handle and pull back because the angles are better
I must say, out of all the classic BMWs I own the high mileage E83 3.0si m-sport quickly became my favorite beater....it is just so useful. These N52 cars continue to impress
Mines the opposite to what most people's dealings with N52. Had to do the usual water pump valve cover etc. wasn't expecting the low compression on all cylinders tho😅
That’s the sensible, responsible, ethical approach. That car cost a lot of time, materials, energy and effort to manufacture - to break it down for parts would be a great waste of resources. If you can get it back on the road and turn a profit, then you should do just that and best of luck. Well done, Eric.
16:13 How to check the oil: You can bump up the rocker switch on the turn signal stalk until it displays "OIL." Depress the button on the end of the stalk and it will show a MIN-----MAX graphic and a little clock while it calculates the oil level (although mine always takes so long it times out and goes back to the standard display and I have to hit it again, usually 3-4 times. It's annoying).
After looking around the interwebs I finally found the dipstick on the 2014 535d although the iDrive will also tell you the oil level. Don't like having to depend on the electronics.
Like he said, you have to wait until the oil warms up for the sensor to register. To avoid the gamble he was facing, all he needed to do was a drain and fill.
I agree 💯 percent with you Eric! If a car runs, drives and functions as it’s supposed to, or will with a little effort and maybe a few $$ in new (used) parts and it can be titled and driven it’s far better to return it to the road rather than part it out and crush the carcass. This car looks promising, I hope it behaves for you and saves itself! If you can’t film an update for it at least post a note on here for us and let us know what your final decision is, inquiring minds need to know! Thanks for bringing us another quality episode and congratulations on breaking 300k subs!
Another save! Better than parting it out. You'll make more money on the intact vehicle if it's an easy refurb. Your call though. You are the auto salvage expert.
I totally agree with your business model! If the car was really physically trashed out that is one thing. I have seen people part out Oliver Tractors because they just don't want to take a little time to figure out what is wrong with them, then they don't ask the right people to find out how difficult the repair is! A bad Oliver Hydra Power is not as hard or labor intensive as a Bad IH Tractor Torque Amplifier! Good Luck!
Nothing is more aggravating than seeing a very reparable anything, be it a car or a baby stroller be ground up in the name of “business” . Thanks for the video.
Believe it or not, that specific BMW model is my favorite one. The design is simple, but at the same time, for me, at least it’s one of the best looking BMWs.
That was the same car my dad had when he passed. I kept it for a while afterwards, but it was pretty rough by the time I got it. Thanks for bringing back some memories; hopefully the next person will get to have some too.
I love these videos. Glad you hit the override button on the Noco. They have reverse polarity protection when on, so if a battery is dead the override button needs to be activated.
First time viewer of this channel from Europe here. I am really surprised the trick with the unlock button works on this car. The two 4th generation VW Golfs I had between 1998 and 2006 were already designed to lock the door handles and disable the unlock button when the car was closed from the outside with a key. However, when a key (with RFID transponder) would be detected inside the car, the car would allow the door handles and button to be used as a safety measure to allow persons in the (closed) car to exit. (It may have also used the occupancy sensor in the seats, but I cannot remember testing that properly. And I am not saying something else wouldn't eventually be able to open it.) The trick with the airbags would never have worked on that car. (And for those that are worried: in case of an accident or airbag deployment, the car would unlock the doors automatically to allow the occupants to flee the car.). Every single (European) car I had since then had this feature as standard. So I would be really surprised if a more recent BMW would not have the same countermeasures in place. In 2006 we locked ourselves out of our American rental car in Canda and a local car dealership was called by the rental company. The super friendly service guy used the same trick with the airbags and the unlock button inside the car to open it. We were happy because it saved us a lot of hassle and costs, but at the same time we were flabbergasted this was even possible, knowing how our own European cars would have locked us out indefinitely. Is this due to different regulations in the USA that require these buttons to be operational at all times?
Great mid-week video! Yup, agree the decision is a good one based on available information. As more data is acquired, other paths may need to be taken.
Just an FYI, remove the old keys from the immobilizer memory. While working as the fleet mechanic for a tow yard our local locksmith in a small town left the old keys programmed on an Audi S8 that my boss was now the owner of, the original owner saw their car at the local Vons and decided to "reclaim" their S8 that they forfeited to the yard using their old key. Sheriffs arrested the OG owner and gave the old key to my boss as well. Some vehicles have a fail safe that force all previous keys to be wiped and all the current ones need to be present for the reprogramming but not all vehicles do this.
Fun video! It's interesting to see more of the kind of things you have to deal with in your "real" job. And saving a car versus crushing it is the right decision almost all of the time. I hope we see a Part Two on this car, just to see how far you have to go (or will go) to make it salable again.
Enjoyed that one Eric, even if we never see that car again it would be good to know what happens to it. Certainly seems to run sweet just there in rhe shop. Obviously you can't film everything that you do but this was a bonus and a good bit of midweek fun so hopefully we get more like it. :)
Some cars like my VW won't allow you to unlock from the inside (using the button) when it was last locked with the key/fob from the outside. I tried helping a coworker who locked her keys in her Toyota and when you pull the inside handle using that tool you had it would automatically re lock itself and set the alarm off
FYI on tye door side storgae compartment. Run your hand towards the front if the car. There is a small slot or space. Normally keys get placed there. I bought a bmw and deal said it comes with 1 fob. When i brought it home and checked all comparments, the 2nd fob was in that location.
seems like a great car to save. it runs great seems clean enough. sure it could have big issues once you get it up in the air.. but you've made your money on it regardless with that engine alone.
I put heavy heat shrink tubing on my lock out kit rod when the silicon tip falls apart, it doesn't grip as well but it slides in tight door gaps easier and lasts longer.
As always, I do really enjoy all your video's, the cheekiness and editing is always spot on. Keep them coming Eric! And I'll catch you on the next one!
Not sure if Eric did some video trickery there or not,, but the wheels will turn on there own and straighten back out when you pull a vehicle like this and the steering wheel isn't locked. I didn't believe it myself until the first time I towed a car using a towbar. And yes,,, I found out the hard way what happens if you don't unlock the steering wheel.. lol
N52's were gimped from the factory. put the 3 stage disa manifold from the X3 3.0si or the e60 530's on it, send the DME to Turner Motorsport, they'll flash it, you'll get like 260-270 HP from it. really makes the car come alive. and its not a turbo POS n5x. Really quick NA 3 series. I loved mine
BTW--you can do a basic oil level check (too low/OK) before starting the car while in the acc. position on these E90s. (apologies if you already know this)
This was my 1st visit to your channel and I'm very interested in seeing this one through the end. I get it it's business decision, but I just hope you see it through for a profit.
Get a piece of steel brake line, run some wire through it making a little loop at one end and some wire at the other end that you can hold with your hand. Use the little loop to lasso the door lock knob, pull it tight with the wire on the other end and lift up.
It wouldn't be an I Do Cars video without a wrecked Miata somewhere in the shot.
No waterpump olympics, though. Bummer.
Or epic dipstick wrestling matches.

I know you do cars, but i like this video as the others you open motors, nice one!
Thanks for the mid-week upload Eric, always look forward to your vids.
Believe it or not, that specific BMW model is my favorite one. The design is simple, but at the same time, for me, at least it’s one of the best looking BMWs.
Happy for you!! It's like Christmas morning every time a car comes in
Did you check for keys above the visor? That's where they always find them on TV.
Or fiddle around with a couple of wires under the dash! Eric is obviously a amature
Glove box?
I like the car saving vids as much as the destroyed engine tear downs. Have a lovely day.
That was the same car my dad had when he passed. I kept it for a while afterwards, but it was pretty rough by the time I got it. Thanks for bringing back some memories; hopefully the next person will get to have some too.
Great call to save this one. Show us progress in the future when you have time. Thanks for sharing
These are always an interesting departure from the tear downs. It'd be interesting to see some of the most unique or oddest cars you've acquired.
You are a good man Eric, kudos to you and your team.
Thanks for showing/teaching us this end of the business. Your parts recycling business saves people money and creates way less waste. Win/win!
I love these videos. Glad you hit the override button on the Noco. They have reverse polarity protection when on, so if a battery is dead the override button needs to be activated.
Thanks for sharing! I'm not a BMW guy, but business is business.
Eric I personally think the mix up of content is great. Keep em coming, you're doing great
I enjoy your content. I do also very much enjoy watching cars being brought back to the best they can be. I hope you do that with this one.
And I am not saying something else wouldn't eventually be able to open it.)
The trick with the airbags would never have worked on that car.
I'm the guy screaming about the mustang but even I think you should save it if you can thanks man keep it up.
PS congratulations on 300,000!
I believe that's a HUGE win!!
You are gold. Thanks
Northridgefix could help you with electronic obstacles.
Would enjoy seeing a part 2 of this!
Even though it’s a BMW I think you hit the jackpot on this one
Just an FYI, remove the old keys from the immobilizer memory. While working as the fleet mechanic for a tow yard our local locksmith in a small town left the old keys programmed on an Audi S8 that my boss was now the owner of, the original owner saw their car at the local Vons and decided to "reclaim" their S8 that they forfeited to the yard using their old key. Sheriffs arrested the OG owner and gave the old key to my boss as well. Some vehicles have a fail safe that force all previous keys to be wiped and all the current ones need to be present for the reprogramming but not all vehicles do this.
Really like these tow lot vehicle videos, especially when you win!
I tried helping a coworker who locked her keys in her Toyota and when you pull the inside handle using that tool you had it would automatically re lock itself and set the alarm off
I love the exclamation points on the notifications of the topdon. "Please wait!" LOL
Congrats on 300K.
This is a great story Eric, good one. Keep em comin.
Good video! Hope to see how this one ends. As always, entertaining and educational. I appreciate your business sense too. Thank you!
Excellent mate!
Thanks for the educational video.
Absolutely great video. Your comments and "go for it attitude" make me laugh. Great entertainment!
One of the best NA 6s ever made if it has a b30. AWD is a nice bonus. Good buy I'd say.
Good shout.
If you don't do another video, please let us know what you do with the car. Love these videos It's interesting to see how your business works!
It has a Missouri front plate and an Illinois rear plate... typical for st louis!! 😅
So if you park halfway on the bridge, you're legal in both states? 😅😂😅😂
@wernerdanler2742 that's a daily occurance around here too!!! LOL
No Blue?! I guess you love him so much he got Valentine’s Day off. Great vid! Thanks for all you share with us!
Great video ! I like these non tear down videos
Awesome video) definitely a saver😊
Great video! Love the engine teardowns but these 4 wheeled puzzles are golden. 👍
If that thing has a usable title, that's likely a score for a good flip. Nice find!
Great video keep up the great work
I have a feeling that BMW would be close to perfect with a new front bumper and a good detailing inside and out.
Thanks Eric, another enjoyable video. I've got a 2007 E83, which I enjoy, so if you get a chance to do more on this car I'll be watching!
Definitely worth saving , as I remember you need to tell the car when you change the battery , have fun
Seems like a keeper (not parted) so far. I’ll keep positive thoughts for it!
What a sweet little ride. I hope you can get it back on the road all in one piece.
I put heavy heat shrink tubing on my lock out kit rod when the silicon tip falls apart, it doesn't grip as well but it slides in tight door gaps easier and lasts longer.
Congratulations on 300K subscribers 🎉
As always, I do really enjoy all your video's, the cheekiness and editing is always spot on. Keep them coming Eric!
And I'll catch you on the next one!
n52 / e90s are amazing. This will be a cool daily beater! Smooth driving and comfy seats.
Mid-week goodies!
very nice of the wheels to magical turn themselves when approaching the door and then straighten out when entering
Very good shout.
The Jumper cables were a good find. Save it it still has 50,000 miles in it. but change the oil right away. 4 wheel drive for the winter. that's good.
Good job, sir, this looks like a nice car, and your strategies and resourcefulness are admirable.
BTW--you can do a basic oil level check (too low/OK) before starting the car while in the acc. position on these E90s. (apologies if you already know this)
I also like these kinds of videos! Great work, was interesting to see the key programmer.
Thanks for taking us through your new adventure!
Save it! I wish I had my 328 back. Best car I ever had.
The intro was priceless!
lol, love the dice on the forklift. Never noticed those before
Finally, a GOOD use for a Insurance co profits strap.
I liked your confidence with the BMW. This 3 series inline 6 is easier to maintain in my opinion. Lot of life left in it. 😊
This was my 1st visit to your channel and I'm very interested in seeing this one through the end. I get it it's business decision, but I just hope you see it through for a profit.
Also you should use the posts under the bonnet to charge or boost it ,risks of blowing modules !
Get a piece of steel brake line, run some wire through it making a little loop at one end and some wire at the other end that you can hold with your hand. Use the little loop to lasso the door lock knob, pull it tight with the wire on the other end and lift up.
