How we pack our backpacks and what it all weighs!

- This #short shows how we pack our backpacks for overnight trips and how it all adds up to right around 9 lbs. This is our "generic" list. For specific trips, we often add items such as extra water bottles or we swap out the tarp for a tent, which often makes the total closer to 10 lbs. Our complete gear lists for various trips are available on our website:

That is impressive how light it is!!
@@mircat28 9 lb isn’t that much
@@mircat28 I think they know it's just the lack of punctuation makes the sentence mean something they didn't want
@@BMNBtastic yeah, they probably meant the commenter said;
"That is impressive, how light is it?"
@@mircat28 they are impressed how light it is he wasn't asking.
@@mircat28 they know…
damn, my pack usually weighs 3 times that just for a weekend trip. props to y’all.
Yeah
To be fair, they’ve done an amazing job with their planning. They can carry 9 pounds when they know at the next town they have their next package waiting for them that they prepared months ago… like I could never do this, but I admire the ingenuity so much.
You pack clothes. They pack exactly enough clothes to change once and either wait until a town or wash them in a stream and dry them on their packs as they hike. Some extra socks, maybe. That's where the weight goes. Backpacking tents and sleeping bags have been heavily engineered to be extremely durable and lightweight. Even the packs themselves are light. Food weighs a lot too if you don't prep correctly.
Think kind of backpacking is super bare bones, not at all luxurious and it's definitely not for most people. They're hiking over distances that would not be possible if they were carrying much more than they already do. They're already losing weight with what they're doing.
Very few people actually hike at this level. They've distilled their years of experience into under 10 lbs. It really is impressive.
They aren’t including food weight or water weight which are usually 2 of the heaviest things. I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual weight is closer to 20 ibs a pack (which is still really impressive)
Not counting weight of water tho
Enjoy life to the fullest
No
Okay
I wish I liked any human enough to walk that long with them and spend that much time together
Have you ever thought that you’re the problem?
@@rex7471I second this. Yeah people are annoying sometimes, but I'm willing to put money on nobody being perfect, yourself included.
@@DP-no1ny literally 😭😭
Thank you so much for showing the layering and some tricks (like no stuff sack for the sleeping bag). Most forums will only list the items or show a ‘spread’ of what they include.
The genuine joy these two express in their videos is so comforting. They aren't weighed down by modern things most of us would consider necessities, all they need are just the basics and each other.
I love how you two teach fundamental basics of nomad living. It's really life changing.
Your videos are so interesting! Y’all are great. Thank you for your time! Be safe and God Bless
I love your videos. I went and did something like what you guys are doing and traveled thru Colorado where there was nothing around me but cows and mountains. It was so peaceful. Peace and love to the both of you. Have safe travels.
Them backpacking for a whole year!
Me to scared to go outside when there’s a loose dog 🤦🏽♀️
Lol I feel you tho people don’t care enough about their dogs nowadays and they let them loose and they attack people. It’s always the owners fault too and the poor dog has to pay the price.
Also other dog owners who have to literally kick a dog into a lake to protect their own dog from other dogs. My poor girl has gotten attacked five times because of these terrible owners and they almost never attempted to stop their dog from taking chunks out of her.
@@selenaparent4199 wow maybe you need pepper spray or taser. That's unacceptable
I go to bear country to get away from people's crazy ass dogs😅
This is cap. They wound survive on that stuff.
You guys are awesome! I admire your sense of adventure
Dang I carry more in my daily work bag
So
@@Lily-ev5pn so shut it
@@Lily-ev5pn I think her point was not about carrying something heavier. But that this couple carries everything they need to survive in a backpack while Annie (and many of us) feel the need to carry around 20 pounds of crap just to leave the house for work. It's a nod to the fact that people don't actually need alot of what we think we need.
Wow! My bag for DofE was around 15kg (33lbs) (before I handed off the poles for our tent to someone with a 9kg (19lbs) bag) and that was only for two days- it’s incredible how you pack everything you need but still keep it light!
Mine was like 12 for the bronze, luckily my family walks a lot ( not with that wait tho) so it wasn't actually too bad.
I love how precise the weight measurements are so that it’s fairly distributed between the both of you! The thing that tips the scale towards Tim is probably the cooking gear, but she has all the toiletries and other stuff in her bag that he doesn’t. Y’all be doin the damn thing, go offf
They seem so happy but always tired either way good for them 💚
This is so cool. I’m leaving to go to Philmont scout ranch in New Mexico for my first backpacking trip and I’m so excited
Ya'll are couple goals!
You guys are a pro thru hike team, I love it
Most my backpacking trips I had a 25 lb. base. Granted I only hiked 10-25 miles.
That is very impressive.
Sync is incredible on this one
why do i feel like my purse is heavier thank that 🤣🤣🤣 👍👌 that's amazing!!
This guy sounds like the “I’m blind and this is how I cook” guy
LOOOL
Hahaha and he needs a good 1 hour long warm shower he looks disgusting
I almost mistake him for that dude
No he doesn't
LMAO
The camera: “what about me?” 👁👁
👄
Probably recording on a phone
Day 3.993: what have y’all go to the bottom tip of South America and go to the top tip of (excluding the islands) unless you want to! Maybe even go to Greenland!
*heavy stuff towards on top, also get a large army ruck sack you can fit 3x as much and will be much smaller if you do it right
Wow that’s light. When I went on a trek for a week my pack weighed about 25 lbs. But that was mostly because it was spring and we were up north so I had to bring warmer clothes.
Ok renee!! Carrying basically just as much as her mans. 💪🏻
these are great tips. i think i will keep putting my sleeping bag in a garbage bag inside my stuff sack though. the extra weight is worth ensuring it is dry. it also takes up way less space
You guys are amazing. Thank you for sharing this. So important for emergency preparation.
You two are very inspiring! Keep at it!
What do you guys use for toilet paper
Leafs but not leaves of 3! Lol
Seriously note there’s bio-degradable toilet paper. It’ll break down underground when you dig your poop shovel.
They wipe each other with bare hands
Go to a hikers store or Google what hikers use.
@@mircat28 I was interested in what they do not others
@@gringa978 yea I forgot about biodegradable tp and I thought of leaves but some leaves are hella rough haha

I’m watching all your videos and I must say u guys are absolutely adorable and sum up the term “relationship goals” 💜
I remember walking around Afghanistan with 50+kg on my chest and back. Fun times! Would have begged to have a pack that light 😆 props to these two #livingthedream
You 2 are rock stars!! Much respect.
That's amazing. In 1976 my pack weighed 50 pounds. Gear has changed for sure.
What is the brand of backpack you used? Is Renee''s a different size than Tim's? TX, I enjoy your adventures and info.
Would love to see a video on the finances of this, how you afford it, total cost, etc.
I did a 12 day 100 mile backpacking trip in at Philmont Scout Camp and my pack was 45-60lbs depending on how much water I was carrying. Very impressive packing!
If you hike in the kind of wet and windy conditions we experience here in the UK, for the love of heaven pack your sleeping gear inside a plastic bag. An iron rule of hiking is that ALL packs leak eventually, whatever the makers claim. A plastic bag weighs all of 10g or so and can save your life. Their's light, and then there's stupid light...
Damn that's so light
Base weight and video editing so on point
And this is why I actually like hiking but not my school’s cadets program. Our packs weigh up to 15kg (33lbs!), along with our heavy duty boots. Rather than being able to walk and enjoy the outdoors, we’re hunched over, being crushed by our packs as we trek for miles. No wonder everyone hates it! And it’s compulsory!!
You've recently popped up on my shorts and I've seen a few videos, what I haven't seen is how do you afford to backpack for such long periods of time?
Good question indeed. It doesn't cost anything to backpack, but I guess the question is what are their other financial commitments.
@@jameseastwood4984 that was more the goal of my question, guess I should have been more specific!
😂❤love your videos!so positive and fun!plus fast!
I enjoy your videos so much.
Wow, I went on a backpacking trip at a college summer program and ended up carrying a 40lb pack for 4 days. I am 5ft and was 130lb at the time…really wish the organizers would have sent us with supplies like that 😩
He had 40 lb seems like a lot. I've been there I have shaved off quite a bit I'll wait over the years I'm at 33 lb fully loaded.
It's kind of weird that they don't put their sleeping bag in a dry bag. What do you think?
Have been geocaching along the way if? so do some videos on it!
Wow that was a lot more simple than I expected. I only learned this year that sleeping bags aren't meant to be folded but stuffed!
My school back is like 20 pounds, im impressed and jealous of how light their bags are!
Wow you guys are great
Nice idea in storing things
Wow when i went on my first hike i had like 20 pounds of gear and that was for two days you guys go across country amazing
You too are very inspiring , I hope to find a partner who loves the things I do the same way you too do 🥰
Worry not about finding a partner, but finding yourself
Do you think you guys will ever stop traveling one day
Soup recipe
Chicken/vege broth
Beef strips
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Carrots
Kidney beans
Potato
2cup a water
Garlic powder
Salt
Black pepper
Or any seasoning you prefer then just bowl add water add more if needed ☺️
Nice to share a tent
The man looks like flowki from the vikings TV show, he's may favorite character. But I was always taught to put the heavy things near the top of the pack for better weight distribution on the body.
Just a few suggestions-try some Asian dehydrated meats! You could include pork floss, bonito flake, dehydrated anchovy/sardine, these are all economical and lightweight!
I think they stave away from it because they eat so many calories a day and it has to be very fatty and heavy caloric meat. I've seen them eat nori sheets tho..
I’m too much of a stickler for being clean to do this, but I applaud that you guys look happy!
Yall got the lightest kits I have ever seen last time I went back packing I was carrying around 55lbs for 15 miles a day man
I’ve learned so many things watching your videos
Looks like the hyper light pack. They are amazingly light and pricey. But so worth it
Based on the pack's weight shown and on their website gear list, I'd say they have Zpacks Arc Airs. Lighter than Hyperlight packs.
HOW did you stuff the WHOLE sleeping bag in and still have room?! You guys got some SKILLS!
Love your video!!!!!!! Do you have more videos? I'd love to see more!!!!😊😊
Nicely done folks.
I had a trip for 10 days at philmont scout ranch and my pack weighed about 60 at most and 50 at least, this is impressive (I also have diabetes though so I have more)
Hi! How do you charge your filming stuff and your phone?
Portable chargers maybe
Small solar panels are relatively cheap, but I don't know how well one of those would keep film equipment charged. If they use a satellite phone then it would probably produce enough power
@@lunaireac5212 how do they charge the portable chargers? Unless they stop at restaurants and petrol stations to charge them? I highly doubt that tho because they said they were in the middle of no where
@@hannahcullinane-burgess5983solar panel portable chargers or crank device chargers,
I've been out here five years and three winters and no end in sight
My toxic trait is thinking I can do this
Y’all are cool keep on working hard
What you have to realize, is alot of you over pack (I'm guilty as well) and also their food is dehydrated, they only have to carry one bottle of water with a filter since they can fill it up. They are truly down with what they have, the only thing is they keep their clothing to a minimum
Props to you guys though for sure, 9-10 pounds compared to my 45 pound rucksack is amazing
Walking 30 miles a day while carrying a backpack is incredible
I hiked the sawtooths with a 75 lb bag when I was in highschool, only part that was worth it is knowing that I could do it with that weight
Wow. Sub 10lbs! Talk about UL. It always amazes me when people hike without a bladder. I’m so scared to even try and just rely on a bottle with just my sawyer.
That’s AMAZING how light you pack! My work pack weighs more than your pack!😬
Wow, I'm impressed 😯
This helped so much!
I love your videos
I love the sleeping bag idea, mine didn’t come with a stuff sack so I’m definitely trying this.
Hey! Where’s your bear spray? You should BOTH carry a can of bear spray placed on the outside of your packs where you can grab it and use it readily! Y’all will be traveling through Grizzly country, and that spray works against mountain lions, moose and human animals as well! I’m looking forward to following your journey!
Damn that’s light as hell
You guys have beautiful energy
You guys r amazing!!!
You need 2 lbs per day of food for thru hiking, my 3 to 4 day food bag is 6 lbs. That bag was tiny and I only weigh 127 lbs. You must not be burning too many calories or you are in town a lot. The food is the hardest thing to condense.
I really want to have a life like this with my life partner !!!
Dreams ....
You are lucky
Keep it up !!!! ☺☺☺
I love survival and all was wanted to go capping in the Canadian rockes
That is really ultra light...what type of backpack are you using
There must be some editing magic going on here because how the heck did all that fit AND stay so light? I watched it all (twice) and am still amazed
OMG I have a lot to learn!! Thanks for sharing your experience and info! I just don't want to look like the Beverly Hillbillies when I go down the trail!!! Lol 😂
Am amazed at how small your food packs were. Enjoying you two but, what are your trail names??
You guys are my hero ❤️
So just curious? Coming from someone who’s grown up in Montana, what do you guys bring for self defense? Just wondering for your guys well being. My lady an I think your trips are badass! An what you guys do is really unique!
Another question is why don’t you guys pack more meats? Any particular reasons?
I love this couple 💖
Shared weight is a blessing! 😂 Still impressive if one were to carry the tent and cooking pot on their own.
So light!!
Do make a backpack with the essentials you want or wanted in your journey
I bet you guys have crazy stores
you guys should do tourist attractions i guess you could call it. make it like a thing where people can walk with you guys all the way and call it a “marathon” or something
This is actually a really dope way of living.
WOW!!! 9.1 lbs - that is great. Are you guys going to do a live?
I wish i could get my pack that light
