      Fat Guy Guns you can’t even remember when there wasn’t internet. And to say that all kids were doing drugs back in the sixties is not even close to true. Unlike today when all of today’s kids are helpless without a cell phone so the Home Depot guy is kind of correct.

      The internet didn't become mainstream until I was about 8 or 9 years old. I remember having to go to the library and lookup books and different sources on topics for school assignments, checking them out, doing the research and returning them.
      The internet has made that so much easier, literally information at your fingertips.
      The problem is, if you rent, or own a condo/townhouse, you don't have the need to know basic lawn maintenance. If you rent, you essentially don't need to know any skills in home repair.
      Only when you move into a home, where everything is your responsibility, will the individual need to take the initiative to learn the skills to fix and maintain their home. Or end up paying people to do it for them. The internet allows us to find that information, and a phone is only a tool that allows us to access it.

    I’m a millennial (20 years old) coming from a single mom household I had to learn how to do chores around the house, whether it be lawn care, installing electrical outlets and lighting, fixing plumbing from sinks or anything you name it. Of course more complicated things I would have to look up to avoid any disaster but that’s how we learn.
    Ever since I found your channel about lawn care, I have grown a passion to making my lawn look it’s very best with your tips. I invested some money to buy myself a proper lawn mower and yes I did get some looks at Home Depot from the older generation while purchasing it. Some guy stopped and asked me “You look too young to be buying a lawn mower, do you even know what your doing?” I replied with a firm yes and took off. But that’s okay because like you mentioned there’s not many people my age who are into lawn care.
    Thank you Allen for introducing me to this great hobby!

    100% loved that video. I’m 39 and my wife and I own our home here in souther California. As I’m sure you can understand, after mortgage and bills I’m not left with much left over to go and pay someone to do squat for me, be it mow my lawn, replace my water heater, install a washer and drier, fix drywall. The list goes on. I had great parents and a father who showed me the basics when it came to hand tools, measurements and common sense. UA-cam has created a great platform for creators like yourself to help inspire people to climb out of there comfort zones, or to refresh a set of skills they haven’t used in awhile. I am a massive LCN now, it goes way beyond the lawn. I see the passion and pride you take in maintaining your property on all levels. YOU sir have inspired me to continue to do the same. I’ll see you soon, in the Lawn.

    I'm 70th years of age and I could not agree more. These young men and women will turn out just fine. Just like my generation that was considered dumb, lazy and to concerned about physical things. Yes I learned the hard way but I learned when the time came. So will the younger generation. Love those kids. They bring back some fond memories.

    • @IronAndDiesel
      @IronAndDiesel 7 років тому +2

      Cheers! What ever happened to the tradition of passing on knowledge? Always felt odd younger generations are supposed to know and do everything as older generations. Going into my 30s, barely out of school for long and establishing a career, newly wed, first time homeowner, etc... I learned to learn from everyone of all ages and some folks will talk to you like you don’t know anything with a hint of a big ego. Little do they know I was the weird kid who grew up tinkering and was encouraged to do so. Plus, I tagged along with my dad with projects either at home or with a family member and friends in need. Was I an expert as a result? No way. Just had some exposure in between playing Nintendo, Play Station, and dared to be a kid on the baseball field. Today I use those experiences to carry me through now that it is my turn to grab the reigns for my home. Inside I laugh when people find out replacement water heaters, home electrical work, basic carpentry and plumbing, modest automotive repair, and a kick butt lawn (thanks AH) fall into a list of completed DIY projects appear shocked and confused because I was supposed to be dumb. Point is everyone needs to learn from some point. Whether it is zero experience to a lot of experience there is always something to share and take in. When a homeowner decides “I want to change this light fixture, but I don’t know where to start” lend a hand because why discourage someone’s motivation to do for themselves? Heck, isn’t that HD’s motto and business model? Let’s do this! Come on in DIYer, we are here to help. For all those who sit there and think “Really they don’t know how to use a tape measure! These dumb kids...” I am certain you didn’t know how to use a tape measure at birth. You had to learn also. Take the opportunity to pass on your knowledge.

      Rick Anderson unfortunately that is not true. The amount of children living in their parents homes past 30 is staggering.And kids of today don’t understand the value of earning a dollar, they believe the government is responsible for their wellbeing. Plus the fact that with illegal immigration jobs for today’s kids are scarce. I wish it was just another generation of diamonds in the rough but our education system is not even concerned with educating, more like turning them into ignorant dependant liberals!

    • @MichaelRei99
      @MichaelRei99 7 років тому +4

      Derp I don’t know what day you are from but I worked when minimum wage was$3.35 an hour. You might think that was high if you were high maybe. Here is a little lesson for you, minimum wage is not supposed to earn you a living. It is meant for young kids in school or for those who are supplementing a primary income. The fact that you think someone could have ever afforded to live off of it shows how misinformed you are or deluded or both. You desperately need to educate yourself and others like you so this problem can be eliminated in the future.

      Oh Mike come off it dude.....The cost of living is much much higher than it was when your generation was first moving out of your parents house. What did a brand new economy car cost then? $5000? Try close to $17000 now. I don't want to even get into the cost of gas (what like 0.50?), electricity, milk, home ownership...... It isn't even about minimum wage for people at mcdonalds or walmart. Wages in general are not going up as fast as cost of living is FOR EVERYONE. The reason these kids are still living at home is they have been told by your generation that they have to spend 10's of thousands of dollars to go to college to get a decent job, they were told by your generation in order to do that they have to take out huge loans, then they can't find that job in the economy your generation ruined...Your generation raised us, your generation fed us all of this bullshit lies in your marketing, your generation handed us the world/economy/society in this condition....and for the record. I'm educated, I work full time, I own a house, I own a car, I have a family, I pay my taxes, I don't take any gov't hand outs, I'm a liberal and also a millennial. So maybe drop the shit stereotypes about liberals all looking for a govt hand out...That would be like me saying all conservatives want to bang their cousins....

    Allyn,
    You hit the nail on the head, I’m in the process of finishing my basement.
    Before taking on this project I knew nothing about framing drywall electrical plumbing hanging insulation, I knew nothing about finishing a basement! My dad knew it all, he was my teacher, and my sounding board for ideas and hints along the way. He was always there to tell me if I’m doing it wrong or if there was a better way to do it.
    My dad passed away very unexpectedly in February, suddenly I didn’t have a teacher, sounding board or someone to tell me a better way.
    I turn to UA-cam and the internet to help me now, I do hours of video study to find that better way to do a simple project like how to put on a simple compression water stop. How to run pex pipe (because I don’t know how to solder copper) how to hang a door .
    It’s painfully slow trying to get the work done, and my wife breathing down my neck wondering when it’s done so we can have a 2nd child.
    We aren’t a lost generation, we are just a little behind, instead of learning these skills at 18-20 we are doing it in our late 20’s. One day those in the older and much older generation will sit back, hand the over the reigns and let us forge our own path

    Home Depot used to have professional tradespeople on staff and working the floor to show you how to do your own home improvements. They even had seminars to show you how to do projects so that you would buy from Home Depot and develop store loyalty. When former-GE 'genius' Bob Nardelli was hired in 2000, with zero retail experience, the first thing he did was get rid of the higher paid tradespeople and seminars to cut costs and 'return shareholder value.' Home Depot only has itself to blame for no longer developing it's customer base by dropping these programs.

      Having worked at HD, just for a summer at 18 admittedly, they truly didn't care about teaching me or anyone else about the products or what they're for. The training was just to "read the label to the customer" like that does anything. Everything I learned about landscaping back then was from older guys coming in to shop telling me about what works. Otherwise I was just a pack mule to move bags of mulch and sell useless products that don't help anyone. You want to know why this generation didn't learn skills: because big corps don't want to invest in us. We were just meat to the grinder. Just like the generation before us and the ones next to us.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!As a 31 y/o who had the fortune of being raised "as a man by a handyman dad who never once that I can EVER remember had to call anyone to fix anything with our houses OR cars, and who passed this knowledge to me (which he said he got from his dad), I loved this video you made. My younger brother (27) didn't pick up nearly as much from my dad, and frequently calls us for help... and he physically needs the help often, but also often just wants the instructions to learn it himself at this time.I have plenty of friends that truly don't know how to do basic shit... and to that, Home Depot (and ANY store!) should see this as a BLESSING!!! NOT A CURSE!!! This is something that makes them actually RELEVANT! Someone could go online and buy a lot of their lawncare products for much cheaper and have it delivered directly to their door... they could also get specific things that often are not available in big box stores. If someone has no clue what they are doing however, DING DING DING, they can either A. Watch youtube and learn (from professionals such as yourself!) or B. go TALK TO SOMEONE. B is where HD (and others as said) could invest those millions and get their money back... when a clueless man (or woman!!! there are plenty handywomen out there!) walks in, have trained associates that can teach and walk them through the projects they want to tackle.. someone can walk them through what they need to get the job to done, sell them the tools AND supplies they need to do it, and have a customer for life who will return again and again, if the associate does a good job!So, thank you again for calling this BS out!

    I know this is an old video and my comment may be overlooked... but I had to take a moment to congratulate you on your humble outlook on this topic with "generations". You hit the nail on the head about knowledge being passed down to people through needs. I just inherited a house at 31 years old!!! I worked... lived on my own... saved... and my apartment never had a lawn... let alone a need to own a drill. I could just phone the 24/7 apartment maintenance guy I payed for. Fast forward 3 years... I have a house... a camper... a dog... twin boys... a wife... and am slowly acquiring tools and skills learnt from online like your channel. Just because I am a mid 30 year old doesn't mean I lost something in life in my early years... I am exactly where I want to be and accelerating at an amazing speed! I am older and wiser starting off on the right foot and learning from the "generations" before me. If I started building things at an earlier age I would still be using a wheel barrow and my back would be jacked up from all the stress... instead I use a Gorilla dump cart and use lighter alluminum tools with proper lifting techniques. I am exactly where I want to be and will not be looked down on for having to google "how to have a good lawn by the Lawn Care Nut" at the age of 32. Thank you for all you do and I will continue to be humble to others in there journey. Take care man!

    Allyn, THANK YOU! I was skeptical when I saw the title of this video and concerned that this would be another bashing of my generation. I am 31 years old and I consider myself handy, but certainly far from all-knowing or mastering home care. UA-cam is my shop-class, its the place I turn to for lessons, guidance, tips, and tricks for everything. I grew up in a big city in the 19th floor of a 35 story apartment building. I never had a lawn until I bought my first house in the suburbs. Yes, I played soccer and video games as a kid, but my lack of knowledge about lawn care was not due to my preoccupation with those hobbies...I never had a place to learn and grow because I never had a lawn. There are many other people out there like me who are either just beginning or aiming to perfect their basic skills. I appreciate your tips, and I continue to watch your channel and learn more about how I can make my lawn green, lush, and beautiful.

    I'm 47 and grew up in a single-parent house [mom raising 5 kids] and we had to do chores but like Allan says, the "interest" wasn't there. Once my wife and I bought a home....then 2, then 3, then we started flipping homes, you have to learn. You learn because now, you have an interest. I bet you Allan couldn't care less about his lawn when he was younger but the passion comes over time. I've been a "lawn care nut" ever since I bought my first house. No neighbor of mine was going to outdo me in that department. I like my neighbors....but there's a line to draw...and the lawn is it. I've never commented on your videos but felt compelled today - because I agree with you 100%. Great job!

    I personally would never listen to anything said by a marketing person. They typically know very little about the product that they have been hired to market. So they tend to resort to inflated specifications and superfluous words to impress the ignorant enough to purchase their product. That only works for so long.

I guess I am a Millennial as well (29 years old) but I do take the time to do things myself like do my own lawncare, run my own data cables in my house after the house was built, how to build a privacy fence, etc. Its really all about the person and how motivated they are and if they take pride in their home/lawn/etc. I love the fact that when people pull up my street and see my kick ass lawn and kick ass privacy fence they say "ohh dang they have a nice house/yard!" Every time I get a compliment for my yard I think "Thanks LCN!"

    Nicely said, I’m new to your channel and I am enjoying each an every video.
    I’m 28 now and coming from a family of 3boys and 3 girls growing up i played mainly football and track and field. I was always one to be doing things around the yard or in the garage working on the cars with my dad. I remember complaining to my dad about why I had to do these things, why I couldn’t just be a “normal” kid. His response was always that one day I’ll understand and I’ll thank him. I was always upset but I did it anyway.
    When I was 21 I had my first son, that November my father passed. A year went by and I soon bought my first house. That was when I began to see everything I learned from my father growing up was to set me up for success. You see I never got the opportunity to thank him properly. I guess what I’m trying to get across is that we are all kids. As we grow and mature we will eventually learn these simple things in life.
    Sorry for the long comment just wanted to show that not all young people are clueless.

    I am a boomer. Members of the Greatest Generation showed me a LOT about tools. There are tricks about using tape measures and neat ones at that. A fellow boomer was helping me install a kitchen at the high school ball field. One of the pre-cut floor joists would not fit as intended and I wondered if it was wrong or if the building was out of square, so I had him measure the joist to compare to others. He said; "It's 16 feet, 5 and a quarter inches --- plus one or two of them itty bitty quarters..."
