I've always been curious about a KBG dominant mix but all the region specific mixes (both big box and specialty stores) are roughly a 80/15/5 mix of Tall Fescue, Rye and KBG respectively. Second most popular alternative is carpet bombing with perrenial rye (5-7 lbs/1000) every fall and just trying to win the battle with volume (most of the local lawn contractors do this). Very few predominantly KBG lawns. I think part of the issue is that we get such sudden and heavy rainfalls once you get into Sept that waiting 21 days for germination would lead to too many casualties. Lots of poa trivialis contamination as well which is then exacerbated by very wet Springs.

2:36 over your left shoulder: You probably already know this, but you have Resurrection Fern on your palms! They are awesome native plants and they are endangered. They shrivel up when it gets dry and look dead, but they spring back to life when it rains. I was super excited when I got a small patch on mine when I first bought my place. It's huge now. I think a lot of people remove them thinking it's a dead thing. But I'm a plant nerd, so...probably no one else cares lol
Our neighbors go in together renting an aerator for the day. A one day rental can get about 5 lawns completed and costs very little for each homeowner. Of course the rental agency may not like this approach.
Those stumps, two methods I use that make my day easier, pull with vehicle, or bury the saw in the dirt and cut the roots, about 6-8". It will dull the chain fast, you'll get about 4 or 5 cuts in. but for a small job, and $10 to sharpen the chain if you don't have your own sharpener it's worth it.
Just started watching your videos in late spring. I live in SE Michigan. I’ve got two applications of Milo down. My grass has never looked better in the 26 years I have been here. By this time in August it is brown and dried out. I use it on my backyard too. It has even seemed to help with keeping the lawn from dying after my dog does her business. Thank you !!!
For small bushes I use a sawzall and a diablo pruning blade. Cuts through dirt and roots in seconds. I saw the hard work and dedication on your project. Excellent!
your videos (and my new neighbors stares and head shakes) have converted me to the green side. now i find myself lying awake in bed watching these videos getting me pumped for the morning so i can get out there and tackle my sad little lawn. i think milorganite owes you some checks because its one of the first things i bought after seed and a quality sprinkler (i did do a soil test prior to fert, it needed nitro desperately but shockingly it was very high in phosphorus)
We moved into a new house that was built last year and the front lawn was pretty barren. Now it is green, but about half of it is crabgrass. I put out crabgrass killer, which is working and next week plan to spread some topsoil and overseed, but I am worried I am getting too late of a start here in North Missouri, but since the highs are around 90 everyday, I am going to go for it.
I use a sawzall like a trencher to cut around stumps and get all the small roots. get the shovel under it, move it around a little and then you can cut the tap root. stump gone!
For 2 years now, I’ve put a thin layer of Milorganite on my back yard to help keep the deer away. They eat my garden and fruit trees. This has worked about 95%. Still that occasional rare stubborn deer. But this light layer does nothing to green up the yard.
Anyone else think this guy is under rated I mean I guess not cause anyone who knows him subs and follows his art to the letter. I suppose I just think he needs a bigger following. But then again us lawn nuts are few and far between

In Texas, I put down milorganite 2x so far this summer and leave my grass at ~3in. Nice and green! Noticed my neighbor just had his lawn guys give his lawn a crew cut, while it's still in the 100° range, and exposed lots of brown patches... my lawn definitely stands put compared to his. I tried the Lesco like the guy at HD was recommended.. no more thanks to Allyn!
You took out the root ball the hardest way possible. Trick use a demolition recipicating saw with pruning blade. Cut in circle. For larger roots do circles and dig a trench between the two circles. I hope this helps you next time.

back up a bit on your circle when diggin out those stumps. its a bit easier on your back and the soil. youll remove a lot more dead matter and roots to reduce the chance of grubs and cinch worms and other insects. wont have to swing that axe so much and its a bit better for the soil to restore itself.

Going to Aerate Labor day weekend and reseed, Starter Fert and Milorganite. Just confirming, anyone can answer, When you say pounds per 1000sqft, i need to calibrate my spreader to drop that many lbs per 1000 and then run the rest of my property at that setting. 3lbs starter, 7lbs seed 5lbs Milorganite.

That LESCO 16-4-8 only has 3% iron compared to Milorganite's 5%, but it has a lot of sulphur to lower the PH and allow the iron to be taken up. I've used both products together in the past on my St. Augustine with good results on Florida's empty sandy 'soil.' Before LESCO became John Deere Landscapes and now SiteOne, they had their own version of Milorganite from Bartow, FL. Don't know if it's still available. Also, check with your local municipality to see if they sell or give away dry sewerage. I can remember my dad getting it and having to help spread it when I was growing up on the Space Coast. Is that the new HD on 64 & 75?
The milorganite has saved me big time, I have to get 5 bags for around70 instead of the other garbage breaking the bank. It does smell weird though, but it works.

I have a disaster lawn. Kansas City, MO, so cool season and hot season combined (in my opinion). No grass grows under large tree. Lots of weeds. Never aerated. Mostly clay soil. Retired and very little money that can be spent on lawn care. Did just buy a new Toro super recycler with Toro engine because the Honda engine on my Husqvarna died. Should my first goal be to eliminate weeds? I’l like to improve soil quality, but not sure how. Thinking maybe spreading compost? Total yard 18,000 sqft. so will have to concentrate on one section at a time. I vegetable garden in back yard, but may have to spray chemicals around anyway, but want to work on front yard first. It’s mostly on a medium steep slope. 30 degrees maybe. Top soil gets washed off onto sidewalk which is totally covered since I’ve let it go, but want to clean it up this year.

When she mows - she rides. Those stump makes you wish there was a gas power hand saw that cuts into the ground to extract small stumps. Only other option is a saws all with a long blade.

I live in northwest, havecnever seen milorganite. I wish we had it, would love to try it. I totally have an "old school" lawn and it's sparse and plagued by creeping bent grass. I will try some overseeding this fall. Thanks.

I noticed you didn't mention anything about dethatching.. is that something you avoid in the fall altogether Allyn?. What product etc would you recommend that's close to Milo for you fans North of the American border who are missing out?!.
You only need to dethatch your lawn if you have more than a half an inch of thatch. I think if you need to do it then spring time is the time to do it. The thatch usually decomposes over winter if you aerate in the fall.
Milky spore for grubs? Anyone ever try it first before going with the synthetic chemical option such as Grub-Ex or Bayer All Season Insect Control? St Gabriel company is probably the easiest version of Milky Spore that's sold at a lot of local independent nurseries. I want to try that for the first time instead of the usual Grub-Ex because I want to avoid harming the beneficial insects in my yard that are also natural predators to the grub worm and larvae (e.g. worms, ants, bees, micro-organisms, etc.). I live near Chicago and heard some people have great results from it. The key reason to use it is that it's an organic option, not a man-made synthetic chemical. I love using organic fert such as Milorganite and I still use chemicals for weeds and pre-emergent granules in the spring & or fall, but it's always best to have mother nature in mind first and think about the long-term consequences of what we throw down on the lawn. If anyone has feedback on Milky Spore for grub worms please let me know. Thanks!

When i lived in Ft Myers back in 2003, it rained at 3p every day during the summer like clock work.
Allen you need a flat bladed digging iron! It will help you chop roots and pry those root balls out, along with some shovel work.

I love all your videos!!!! I use Milorganite except for the final fertilization of the year; then I use a winter fertilizer from Fleet Farm.

Those stump makes you wish there was a gas power hand saw that cuts into the ground to extract small stumps. Only other option is a saws all with a long blade.

I live in northwest, havecnever seen milorganite. I wish we had it, would love to try it. I totally have an "old school" lawn and it's sparse and plagued by creeping bent grass. I will try some overseeding this fall. Thanks.

I noticed you didn't mention anything about dethatching.. is that something you avoid in the fall altogether Allyn?. What product etc would you recommend that's close to Milo for you fans North of the American border who are missing out?!.

You only need to dethatch your lawn if you have more than a half an inch of thatch. I think if you need to do it then spring time is the time to do it. The thatch usually decomposes over winter if you aerate in the fall.

Milky spore for grubs? Anyone ever try it first before going with the synthetic chemical option such as Grub-Ex or Bayer All Season Insect Control? St Gabriel company is probably the easiest version of Milky Spore that's sold at a lot of local independent nurseries. I want to try that for the first time instead of the usual Grub-Ex because I want to avoid harming the beneficial insects in my yard that are also natural predators to the grub worm and larvae (e.g. worms, ants, bees, micro-organisms, etc.).
I live near Chicago and heard some people have great results from it. The key reason to use it is that it's an organic option, not a man-made synthetic chemical. I love using organic fert such as Milorganite and I still use chemicals for weeds and pre-emergent granules in the spring & or fall, but it's always best to have mother nature in mind first and think about the long-term consequences of what we throw down on the lawn. If anyone has feedback on Milky Spore for grub worms please let me know. Thanks!
