The impact that John Saunders has had on a lot of us small machine shop entrepreneurs cannot be understated. I am glad that John has a successful business, but I do miss some of his older videos including the shop tour and Wednesday Widget videos.
I've been running a machine shop for nearly 10 years, and I attribute my success to UA-cam machinists like Ox Tool, NYCCNC, Abom79, and Edge Precision. They've inspired me SO MUCH to jump into this trade with both feet and run with it. I've always been interested in metalwork and machining, but I learned from them that I could be a pro if I humbled myself and learned what I didn't know. More great inspiration here! Thank you.
Another great shop tour. This guy Brad is the real deal, and I can relate to a lot of what he says. I've been at it 45 years, slowing down a bit now at 65 yrs old.
Seen the writing on the wall 20 years ago. I worked for a small company for 22 years and was head machinist. They got purchased by a large corporate company and the sooner or later they were going to get rid of people to save money. Made up business plan, started networking with suppliers I knew already. I found a location, 1500sq ft, 200 amps 3 phase power, large bay door off the beaten path. Purchased a new cnc mill and put my 1 month notice in. Now 3000sq ft with 6 cnc's doing small production. Few more years left and sell off everything and retire.
This is an incredible video. As someone who is working in corporate america with the desire to go out on his own, this is everything. Thank you for sharing
The part everyone always leaves out when they give the cool guy talk about leaving corporate America, is the only way to fund this BS is a decade of working in corporate America.
Brad bought some chasers for the geometric threading heads from me when I was closing down my shop in the US and moving to Europe. He has come a long way!
@ yeah, it’s been a while. If you want I would let you tour my shop, I have a mix of USA/Euro machines, and I believe the viewers would love to see what I do.
I've been a one man shop for 35 years. All I did was work. 10-12 hours 6-7 days a week. I own, clear title, a 8K building on 12K sq ft. of land in the so bay of LA. Aero space stuff. One off stuff, no production. Now I'm getting out at 66. It was fun but long days. Stress also but yes worth it.
I quit my Job 2024 March and started my own machine shop in Bulgaria with a friend. We are just starting a UA-cam channel and just got our first contract. I hope this year we can buy our first mini CNC machine. This video resonates so much. Thanks for the video. Also, guys make sure you apply for Fusion for startup it's much cheaper, otherwise, we would not have been able to manage. There are so few of us that are into this work, but it means a lot.
👣👣👣👣I really don't have time for a 45 min tour but from the looks of this shop, I'm really impressed. I'm sick of seeing people whine about filthy shops saying they are too busy to clean their shop. Or saying a working shop is messy with no time to clean. I see shops on YT that I can tell has clutter that hasn't been moved in years resembling an episode of american pickers.. A person who takes this level of pride in their shop and machines, is a shop you can depend on to do exacting meticulous work from a person who has a great work ethic. A shop that's a dedicated mess for years on end with nothing but lame excuses is a shop who has an owner that's lazy and will routinely use words like good enough, close enough in regards to their sub standard work. Even more well known YTers have a habit of the ol' close enough schtick. Oh, so sorry if anyone reading this was offended, go clean your shop, if you even have one... 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣
This guy gives me hope!! I am working on doing this same exact thing. I have bought all my machinery first so not a ton of overhead. I just need to figure out how to get that first few parts for a customer.
Well, laid out workspace. How often do you actually use the South Bend and Turret lathe? Are you keeping them because you restored them or do, they actually bring in revenue? Shop is impressive. Stay well, stay focused and congratulations on your success.
Crazy. Brad completely disappeared from UA-cam and here we find he has a successful (and really large [for a garage]) shop... I thought maybe he just gave up or something.
Ditch the Bridgeport and buy a simple 3 axis conversational control bed mill. Guaranteed you will not regret it. This is not coming from a salesman but a guy who has been very successful with this strategy.
If you decide to “do it” and are married , make sure your partner is going to be alright with all the time you spend on the business. They may like the money you bring in but will complain about how much time you spend on the business.
Great point. I’m always curious how the work family balance goes for business owners. The last couple guys I’ve talked to seemed to be in sync with their families which is awesome.
Yea sorry about that. I put a note about that on the screen. Nothing I could do to fix it after the footage was taken. You’ll have to watch the video to hear Brad’s reasoning!
Daaaaam....Brad nails the intro and what your own shop life is all about. Well put Brad

Thank you for this! Brad's early restoration videos on UA-cam got me started in machine restoration and machining!

Yep, he’s doing well! He mentioned that he’s on Instagram lately - maybe check over there for more updates to date posts.
Do you have ISO or NADCAP certification?
How can we get pricing on those campro machines. Interested in a 40-20-20 linear mill.
Where are you located?
@ Delaware

Is that the “basement guy”?
Yes!
I must be getting old. You haven't seen a manual turret lathe before.
lol, that or I'm not as observant as i should be. I've spent most of my time as a tool/machine rep in the CNC world.
