If you grind the head of the screw off cut a slot in it with a Dremel or something like that and turn it into a flathead screw to get it out to replace it
I have a Native 10 Slayer and they have a system to add wheels to it that flip over on top of it when you're in the water. Makes it so easy to drag around and I imagine prevents a lot of those scratches on the bottom.
A lot good tips here. Pro tip #22...you can also put a dab of Permatex Anti seize on any metal threads. It won't rust and allows easy removal. Same stuff I use during a break job. I've used jb weld and flex seal but yes you need prep. Love the pvc tricks
Have you considered keelguard type tape. I have used a thing called PEREGUARD. You can apply it to those areas that are put through the ringer. I give this product 9/10. After 2 seasons I just have to replace a small area at the bow. A hairdryer is all you really need to apply it securely!
Nice behind the scenes video. Thanks!
Hey, John! Flexseal works good for a basic bottom covering more so than just rubberized undercoating. Also, there are several very good you Tube videos how you can make inexpensive , but tough as nails, skid plates from PVC pipe. Heat it up with a torch or hot air gun and you can form it ( with hot gloves on!) to the shape of the nose or corners of your kayak where its worn out. Then use 3m waterproof, double stick tape to put it on and it will last a LONG time! To remove it for a new one, just heat it up so the tape glue softens, and then pry it off with a screwdriver or pliers . Then heat more PVC pipe and make a new one as needed. You will have to totally remove any undercoating before putting the PVC skids on. I just bought a Pelican Catch 100 fishing kayak and plan to make skids of PVC the same way to put on the hull before it even gets worn. That way it maintains the integrity of the original kayak hull... ...Part 1: " ua-cam.com/video/TC-NOYGHsco/v-deo.html "
I just bought a feelfree moken and it's got a permenant wheel built into the skeg
Lots of miles on that old Kayak
I use kydex on both our kayaks, big rig and her yahoo. Mostly fishing on Norris the rocks get rough. So far so good with it.
Don’t cut the screw heads off. Take a dremel and cutoff wheel, carefully cut a groove for a flathead screwdriver. Easy peasy.
I have not needed to repair anything on my kayak yet but all the articles I’ve seen mention polarizing the kayak shell material with a propane torch before trying to use any kind of adhesive or sealant on it. So if the undercoating doesn’t stick it’s because polyethylene resists bonding to things without treating it first. Rhino Liner or other truck bed liner might stand up better than undercoating.
Thanks for sharing this John. I've been wondering about this with my 106 pdl. Hopefully that stuff you sprayed on it works well. 👊👍
I got a PDL 120 on Craigslist in Colorado for $1600 with the wheel cart! Nice to see you abusing yours and it comes back for more. Old Town makes some damn fine boats for the $
Don't forget our Fall Creek Falls State Park trip!!!!! Glad I didn't flip my kayak!!!!! Wooooooo weeeeeeeeeee
Very helpful, thanks!
Well done
I've worn holes in the bottom of 2 different kayak brands in under a year. I now install kydex on the heavy wear spots. I fish almost strictly rocky rivers.
I used that spray-on undercoating as a pickup bed-liner once. It was not at all durable and a mess to clean up.
I’ve only owned my kayak since august and I’ve already put it through the ringer. Nothing too bad tho. I’d appreciate if anyone has a scratch repair/ protection tips
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing. I had no idea. God n
Bless you and your whole family.....🙏❤🙏❤🙏😊🙂😀
Next year If you want to work on the bottom of that boat with a heat gun or torch you can get a lot of those scratches and cuts smoothed out. Be sure to take an electric pressure washer to it first to get all the dirt out of the gouges and scratches. Hopefully you can get that bed liner off too. It's part of my annual winter maintenance on my kayaks.
Also please ignore all the comments of using JB weld or flex seal or tape on the bottom these boats are made with HDPE plastic and you can literally just melt HDPE from a 5 gallon bucket into any gouges or cracks and make a stronger repair with the same plastic than any of those other type fixes suggested.
Caught me a big Brook Trout yesterday here in Tullahoma.
Interesting DIY !
Put oil on the bearings in the pedals ever now and then and they will last longer
I also have an old towne. I absolutely love it. Where can you buy the skid plates? And are they all the same? (Interchangeable)?
I believe those peddles are a 5/8 wrench 🔧
Probably 304L stainless steel as far as the hardware.
Come on john
You can also use JB Weld to fill deep scratches &/or those worn corners on you kayak...Check out " ua-cam.com/video/bgMuLETaleE/v-deo.html "
Put some grease on those peddles. I have been riding bikes all my like. It will be easier to take off next time.
Could you glue a piece of outdoor carpet on your pedals? I have heard that it works. Could you use the stuff that the guy on TV sells? He even made a boat!
Flexseal
I think you left in some footage you might have meant to cut out at 7:38
Heres a video on using JB Weld and Flexseal on a kayak hull : " ua-cam.com/video/D61_CFKxroo/v-deo.html "
I wonder if you can use some kind of plastic filler or epoxy to fill all those deep cuts in?
