I recently met Jerry Portnoy at an event in Portland. To this day, he still gets choked up when he tells the story of the first time he played with Muddy. Funny Thing: During the event I attended, Jerry, Magic Dick (J. Geils Band), Lee Oskar (War), and Mark Hummel (Blues Survivors) all played together on a song, each one taking a turn. Jerry went last and taught a master class in both simplicity and the power of anticipation...by holding a single, high note for two full verses! It was amazing to see these other masters, owning every inch of their harps, only to have Jerry blow them all away (figuratively and literally) with one, long note. The man is...just...WOW!!!

It is unbelivable how many GREAT harp players went through the Muddy Water's Band. It is a list of greats..from Little Walter,Paul Oscher,James Cotton, George Smith,Carey Bell, Jr Wells. I was lucky enough to see every one of them.Yes..an OLD blues fan.

Yes, and a side piece with Butterfield on "Father's and Sons".
A great session with Mike Bloomfield on guitar. Sometimes the guest players are better than the regular band.

Wow! All of them? Lucky you. I used to go to Boston and find the funkiest black, blues bars in the worst sections of the city. I'd go in by myself--only white in the bar-- only WOMAN, in the bar...and just groove on the music. No one ever bothered me...although I got some surprised looks. I was quite pretty back then too. But I was just there for the music. Everyone got the message and respected me. And I certainly respected them!

I think I saw him 15 times, perhaps more. When I remember one of these concerts, the first thing to come is that heavy, huge, deep soud coming from Calvin Jones and Willie Smith. The band litterally sat on that sound. Heaven. And the magic " delay".

Muddy Waters a musical journey felt like I was sitting in the backseat going along for the ride muddy was on his game he knew how to drive a band. You couldn't do nothing but respect that man when he walked out on the stage. Willie big eyes my favorite Blues drummer of all time incredible. James Cotton open the show I'm thankful to have been there to see hear them I believe it was 1979 thank you so much for sharing this.

I love Muddy! I was lucky enough to see him live 9 times in the 70s and 5 of those times Johnny Winter jammed with him. Does it get any better than that? I think NOT! Both Johnny and Bob Margolin are still kicking ass all over the place and you should see them play whnever you can.

I came to hear Muddy and Jerry, but I'm absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the drummer. Has to be one of the coolest dudes of all time, and and I'm really diggin' how joyous he looks playing those drums!
As a longtime Muddy fan and blues harmonica nut, I would have loved to have seen this performance live!!

As I saw them guys many time, I can attest that le drummer, Willie" Big eyes" Smith & the bass player , Calvin" Fuzz" Jones, played together, a magic pair of aces. The Muddy waters style " Play with delay", as he said, sure they did, to the limit.

Oh, when the sun rose this mornin'
I didn't have my baby by my side
Well [Incomprehensible] know where she was
Well, she's out with another guy
Well, don't the sun look lonesome?
    Shadin' down behind the trees
Well, don't the sun looks so lonesome
    Shadin' down behind the trees
Well, don't your house look so lonesome?
When your baby packed up to leave
    Well, alright
    Well, blow wind, blow wind
Blow my baby back to me
    Oh, blow wind, blow wind
Blow my baby back to me
Well, you know if I don't soon find her
My heart's gonna be in misery
    Well, alright, alright
    Oh, goodbye, baby
I don't have no more to say
    Oh, goodbye, baby
I don't have no more to say
Go ahead and have your way

That is a great version of Blow Wind. I saw Muddy play with these guys often. They were so on and so relaxed and the best live blues band around. JB Hutto and the House Rockers were hot too, but did not play east coast as often as Muddy.

My father loved the guitar so I naturally grew up loving the guitar. Today we have so many incredible blues guitarist that you just can't say that just one of them is the best. During the 50's, B.B. King was noticed because he did not use a slide to play the guitar. During that time, that's all you heard, slide guitar. He tried something new and the world of blues loved it. Thank you B.B. King and thank you to all musician's.

This music, right here, is where bluesicians, and the like, get to sharpen their pencil, and do some good quality woodsheddin' ! This is the school of hard knocks. Rhythmical unity, the pocket, takes precedence. The dialects, of the blues, have to be earned. In most cases (not all) it is a life lived. Muddy was a pioneer who helped pave the way...and the Chess brothers had great ears. This is great American Music!!

I've been a fan of the blues since the mid 60s when I first heard The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I've always liked Muddy but it's only been the last few months that I've really devoted time to listening. I'm a near life long Albert King fan.
Anyway, I've owned "Muddy Mississippi Live" for years and what's always stood out to me is the drum work and of course piano. I've long been a Pinetop Perkins fan.
Who are the guys in this lineup? Of course I know Pinetop.

i had the extreme pleasure of meeting muddy, and this lineup. i lived in boston at the time with ronnie earl (who i knew since college).
we went to see the band at the old 'jazz workshop' in boston around '76.....and because of ronnie, we got to go into the dressing room between shows.
hanging out with muddy and the band was just surreal!!!
