this is the best muddy waters song in my opinion. i used to rock out to this song when i was a kid. my parents had the blues going all the time. so this shit just takes me back.
Never forget Willie Big eyes Smith and Calvin Jone's work. On stage it was HUGE. And thanks for Luther GtrJr Johnson with this nice guitar solo. Strong and delicate. As the whole band.
This is one of the best blues videos you'll ever see. You've either got it or you haven't and these guys swing! They are so enjoying it and that easy confident expression on Muddy Waters' face - King of the Blues, Jerry looks a wee bit nervous, but who wouldn't surrounded by these blues giants. Check out the original studio version 2 mins. & a bit complete with clavi type electric piano. Fantastic.
the one.....the only.....mr. muddy waters.......have mercy....i saw muddy live many times.....the crowd went totally nuts every time.....chicago blues, nothing like it.....
Please , listen to Fuzz and Big eyes. everything was on their shoulder. And they were STRONG. The sound here, even excellent, has nothing to do with the one of concert. This pair was like a troop of Jumbo planes landing on you.
Oh yeah, I love this song! This is great to see, too, because this is the year that I met Muddy and this band at that time...July 4th, 1976! Lord, I miss Muddy, Pinetop, Fuzz Jones and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith! I'm so happy that we still have Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson and Bob Margolin. I see then as often as my gig schedule allows me to.
Agreed , his harp break during Champagne and reefer puts the hairs on your neck into action. If you can watch it live anywhere you see luther twitch and turn like a shock goes down his back too :-)
Hi William…thank you so much for posting these videos!!! Les taught me how to run sound & I worked with all of these guys before the formed the Monday Night All Stars when Les was still doing sound & playing at the Stanleyville Grille & so many more & it’s so great to hear them after so many years…I have board tapes I made of them floating around somewhere lol. Thanks again ☮️❣️😎🙏
I first heard this song about 30 years ago in a bar. The band was really having a good time playing it, and their performance of it was great. I've loved the song (and Muddy) ever since, and it always makes me smile. I have to admit, though, I thought for quite awhile that the lyrics were referring to a mule that "done broke down."
Ah, the double entendres used throughout make this a song Victoria Spivey could've sung...set in a Ray Charles" What Did I Say?" mode. The guitar solo by Margolin is so tuneful, well structured, it can be hummed easily. One of the best blues tunes.
'Muddy was the best Bluesband leader ever. He controled it all, and looked relaxed on top of that. But don't let that fool you. Great musicians all of 'em. The drummer is something else. Just try and copy his style. It won't work I bet you.
hey, im brazilian and this song is amazing man. hahahahahahahahahahaha blues is great hahahahahahaha the guy of the harmonica man. hahahahah very good very good.
I had a little corn I put it in a sack I get to the mill And had to bring it right back What's the matter with the mill Done broke down What's the matter with this mill Done broke down I can't get no grinding Tell me what's the matter with the mill Some people said that a preacher won't steal I caught one down in my corn field What's the matter with the mill Done broke down What's the matter with the mill Done broke down I can't get no grinding Tell me what's the matter with the mill One had a bush and one had a peck The other had the cornfield round his neck What's the matter with the mill Done broke down What's the matter with the mill Done broke down I can't get no grinding Tell me what's the matter with the mill Done broke down Done broke down You don't know the way I feel I got some more weevil in my corn field What's the matter with the mill Done broke down What's the matter with the mill Done broke down I can't get no grinding Tell me what's the matter with the mill
huhuh sorry, I'm not from english speaking country, so I was trying to be smart... guess it hasn't worked that well lol :) but it's stil kinda strange nickname since there is the instrument that is called harp :P
I was hearing "what's the matter with the mule?" then looked up from my work to see the title and realized it was "the mill." Great tune! Stiller? Seinfeld? From some angles, Portnoy looks like Jon Stewart. Do all Chosen People look alike? I DO NOT MEAN THAT IN A FUCKED-UP WAY; it's a feeble early-morning joke, K?
The one and only Master !
Very hard to believe that after listening to this high quality....... somebody invented Rap
Spot on!
this is the best muddy waters song in my opinion. i used to rock out to this song when i was a kid. my parents had the blues going all the time. so this shit just takes me back.
this was recorded in Dortmund, Germany by German TV guys. thanks soundguys, brilliant and clear as day. thanks!
When I was a kid, I was into Big Band Jazz. My mum got mixed up and bought me a Muddy Waters CD for my birthday. Never looked back!
What a crew!! Portnoy,Muddy,Perkins
Johnson on other guitar, big eye Willie in drums
Never forget Willie Big eyes Smith and Calvin Jone's work. On stage it was HUGE. And thanks for Luther GtrJr Johnson with this nice guitar solo. Strong and delicate. As the whole band.
powerful Chicago sound

Absolutely one of the best bands of all time!!! Not a blues band then, since or now that can compare, compete, or beat. Muddy's King!
the one.....the only.....mr. muddy waters.......have mercy....i saw muddy live many times.....the crowd went totally nuts every time.....chicago blues, nothing like it.....
What a band!! Bob Margolin, Pinetop, Portnoy....this is my fav lineup of all of Muddy's bands, possibly excepting when Cotton was in there
Please , listen to Fuzz and Big eyes. everything was on their shoulder. And they were STRONG. The sound here, even excellent, has nothing to do with the one of concert. This pair was like a troop of Jumbo planes landing on you.

I love this tune! Bob Margolin's solo turns totally BAD ASS at 3:38 right through to the end of his solo! What a great feel!
Augh, I'm obsessed with Muddy Waters...
Jovana Fung me to!!!
He's high up there for me as well.
Saw them guys about 15 times. Addicted. No rehab. Muddy's was pure magic.
The king.....

This is no pickup band. These guys played a long time with Muddy ...and each other. Sounds it!!!

Muddy and Jerry are Great!
Pure gold!
So.. I saw Muddy live about 10 times 77.78.79……etc.. He was the master….his bands SWUNG…all R&R bands must bow before him…
Me the same. And same feelings. Don't tell me, Mr Ferranti, that it was southern France !?
What snappy drumming :))
Muddy was the baddest-ass there ever was. And always loved Jerry Portnoy's harp work.
Fantástic! 😊
Beautiful solos.
Unbelievable! Joyous! That's where it's at people!
Jerry Portnoy

Muddy Mississippi Waters was a master !
ho visto dal vivo nel 1983 a NY questo gruppo : suonava in un piccolo locale della lexington ed era stupendo. viva muddy.

Always loved this, sublime sound 👍
Always liked Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin. was lucky enought to play support act when this band was in Australia. He had that great fat strat tone

He controled it all, and looked relaxed on top of that.
But don't let that fool you.
Great musicians all of 'em.
The drummer is something else.
Just try and copy his style.
It won't work I bet you.
Add the bass player, they play very close, Big Eyes and Fuzz, and on real concerts, it was like a squadron of 747 jumbos landing on you.

I had a little corn
I put it in a sack
I get to the mill
And had to bring it right back
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
What's the matter with this mill
Done broke down
I can't get no grinding
Tell me what's the matter with the mill
Some people said that a preacher won't steal
I caught one down in my corn field
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
I can't get no grinding
Tell me what's the matter with the mill
One had a bush and one had a peck
The other had the cornfield round his neck
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
I can't get no grinding
Tell me what's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
Done broke down
You don't know the way I feel
I got some more weevil in my corn field
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
What's the matter with the mill
Done broke down
I can't get no grinding
Tell me what's the matter with the mill
Almost correct lyrics . But I think it's "One had a bushel and one had a pack" (?)
Haha I'm with Dharma up top, I thought it was a "mule" that done broke down! Thank you for the correction!

R.I.P Pinetop!
We are in the minority here, but I agree. For one thing it's the first incidence of the genious "Can't help it, the girl can't help it rhythm EVUH!
that guy on the harp lives near me i no him well
Jerry Portnoy is great
HAY 20 QUE TIENEN 1 CORCHO EN LOS OIDOS
