I think I'm right in saying John's policy is approx :
' zero tolerance of soil interference of any kind '....he doesn't dig. manure, etc .etc.
Just a very little compost occasionally when planting very large plants to give them an initial boost ;
And bark mulch every 5 or so years, to retain the natural soil texture and moisture ; prevent weed seed germination and as ' the best soil improver possible as it rots away '.
It is likely that his fairly unique policies re : ' nature knows best ', that results in his unusually strong , resilient and disease free gardens !
It's probably our indoctrination into trying to change the prevailing natural soil type that was designed by nature to promote life according to : local climate ; insect and whole organisms systems, that results in weak vulnerable plants, and thereby which require such delicate treatment and constant attention !
I've just been painting a plant pot. Thought I'd drop in and say, 'hi' for some hard-core gardening.
I love the natural beauty and flow of your gardens, and how you jump from one thing to another in your videos. This is just what happens to me - often I go out to do one thing and end up doing three others... and the peaceful moment at the end of this video feels familiar as well - I have a very similar wee gardening buddy! If ever I make it to your part of the world your gardens will be on my list of must-see destinations!

Great video, I have wild geranium and I reach under the plant with my hand and rip some out. As long as there is a little root or two they take!

I'm really enjoying your videos and your down to earth, tell-it-like-it-is style of explaining. Many things you've mentioned with divisions and replanting I've observed as well.
Good idea about putting sticks to mark where you planted things, I use neon pink sticks until the plants get established just so I can spot them easily.
Really enjoyed watching you work & the sound of walking on gravel. I appreciate your skilled, learned & intuitive vision. Those reconfigurations will look wonderful together - & in perfect proportion for what had been a wasted space. Love the economy in that!
You also reminded me - I recently noticed my last Astilbe seems to have been nearly overwhelmed by ferns! No time to waste & I had forgotten all about it!

It would be lovely to do a follow up video on your transplants in say few months or a year.
What do you do when needing to move partial clumps of broad-leaved grasses? Do you cut off the tops of the leaves or just leave them on? Having a ready to hand source of bamboo canes is one of the most convincing reasons I have heard to plant bamboo as I have feared it getting away from me even though it is lovely and I enjoy the sounds. Off now to Google London Pride and Fair Maids of France. What could go wrong? 😄 Thanks again John, David, and Teddy!

I propagate geraniums all the time - such an inexpensive way to plant up the garden. This year I divided a huge Geranium x oxonianum Wargrave Pink into 8 new plants, and they've all taken off :)

I have red soil, you can probably guess in in the US south. I spend just as much time trying to amend and bring the soil up to a better condition. I have to be careful my plants don’t drown.

I have never seen anyone treat plants so roughly. It works for you, obviously, but man, sometimes I want to yell "they're living things, dude!" But, yeah, it's kind of reassuring to see in a way and I have gotten a wee bit less precious watching you. :p

Do you have irrigation? How do you water a garden that big?
He doesn't water! Yup, he says he doesn't water. Except when transplanting. I guess he grows things that don't need more water than they typically get in his part of Ireland?
In Ireland you seldom have to do any watering because the weather does it for you
He said recently that he waters a plant for the first year and then after that it's on its own - roots have established by then I suppose.
Can't do that in USA with Certain plants like Azalea and Rhododendron, I neglected my plants when my brother was sick and they died, 3 Azalea and 1 Rhododendron

I use a pointed Sneeboer spade. Whey do you use a flat spade? I see you turn it to use the point of it so perhaps you have more capability with your flat spade, hmm. When I dig a hole I add torn cardboard and rabbit manure. I do not intend to come back to the same tough soil. I also use cover crops to improve my soil like alfalfa, radish, and buckwheat.I also plant torn pieces of cardboard to feed the worms. The sound of that space beating that soil is not my way to garden. Your spade sound like you are battling so really tough roots. That is a beautiful white flower collection. Speaking of Dock what are the conditions upon which it spreads? I have A LOT of it moving around my garden this year. What is it telling us about our gardens? Lol, We in America have the NERVE to call " The Devil's Walking Stick" the "Tree of Heaven". How is that for guilding BS:-) What a great technique to remove a transplanted plant's leaves to help it's roots settle. What purners are you using? Those are not Felco #2s. They look like you can sharpen them easier than Felcos. You have such a quick and intelligent sense of humor, quick witted:-) You are accomplishing A LOT of work in a small span of time. You are Type A like I am. The magician strikes again:-)
