@@eraldway I tried that, but unfortunately HomeKit can be a buggy mess at times. I had a router change and it completely bricked my Nanoleaf products. And then an update to my smart lock caused HomeKit to desync from it, and now it refuses to pair. Same happened to my garage door opener. Now most of my smart home gear is just sitting there not being used. TBH unless smart home products can get to the point that they are 100% reliable, 100% of the time, zero bugs, literally ever (and I mean literally never have an issue, or delay, or quirk, ever), then they’re useless and pointless.

    • @eraldway
      @eraldway Рік тому +1

@@Scott-lc5kh I have never had issues with HomeKit. I never even bother using the manufactures app. Simple plug something in, connect to its device wifi, then add it to HomeKit using the code. The best part with HomeKit is that once the manufacturer drops support, you can still use the devices. For example, I have 4 smart plus I bought 4 years ago. They were HomeKit capable. Manufacturer dropped support and even shut down its app and servers. These devices now are not visible with GoogleHome or Alexa. But they still work right now on HomeKit.

I'm surprised there's so little said about zigbee, z-wave and Home Assistant. I think that the big 3 are not that popular in Europe, there's a huge market of other devices and even whole ecosystems. And Home Assistant is bringing everything together into interoperability.
I also can't wait for everyone to support the same standard, but I think I will stick to Home Assistant to manage because it is so powerful and it still allows to connect together things that were not intended to be smart - like power inverter, old-ish projector etc.

Zigbee and Z-wave still exist but are the wireless protocols, not the management or integration. Smart Life/Tuya is one of THE largest mobile RPA apps that allow for Google Assistant and Alexa native, along with many, many HomeKit bridges to integrate only HomeKit devices to also then be integrated into Google/Amazon assistants via Smart Life/Tuya. What's great about Matter is that it will open up the smart home world beyond those willing to dive into Zigbee and Z-wave hubs like SmartThings, Hubitat, and Home Assistant. So now you'll be able to set up more smart home things for your relatives who don't want something that "just works".
@Andrew - What smart switches do you have installed?
@14:44 - Or get a smart switch that supports Smart Bulb Mode! This would allow you to turn the bulb "On" from the switch while still allowing the bulb to maintain full power. The benefits of a smart bulb would allow you to have the "lights" come on at a lower level at night so that you don't blind yourself. Smart bulbs can also let you set up a circadian rhythm effect which changes the color temperature of the bulbs throughout the day.

Smart Things/Tuya ftw on cloud based RPA but the LAN function per se of matter?? 💦💦💦
Even with a hard-wired z-wave PAR sensor, that latency equates to real-world problems you have to change your normal perception of feasible solutions, for example I went to setup my bathroom lights to turn on when a PAR sensor triggers motion directly at the threshold as to avoid turning on unless someone was literally walking into my bathroom (along with only having one of my 4 lights turn on at 5% brightness and using red rather than normal incandescent color since they're all RGB), however I immediately found the latency was around 2-3 seconds you'd have to stand waiting for that PAR trigger to then start the flow; upgrading from 2.4ghz wifi PAR device to a z-wave device hardwired rather than battery operates so the sensor is always active got it down to a reasonable 1.5-2s delay but even then I had guests asking where the light switch was followed by, "ope, nevermind it turned on by itself," not knowing which, as I've experienced turned into some people knowing where the light switch was or just seeing it, flip it down/up, nothing, do it two more times quick and now you put the lights into their blinking connection mode 🤦
I had to move the PAR sensor out in the hallway rarely used heading that direction other than my guests or I other than to use that bathroom so that by the time they got to the threshold the lights would be on. Very nit-picky but I only want the bathroom light to turn on the instant you walk IN to the bathroom whereas my hallway sensor would trigger the hallway light since there's no windows and can be a dark hallway after mid-day.
      tl;dr -- I look forward to matter

Hi, Thank you for the video. It seems to me, that you are very excited about this Matter. But I am afraid you are over estimating the capabilities of this standard.
    Please do some fact checking.
Matter is supposed to provide “common language” to enable direct communications between Full Matter Devices. As any language it has some limitations - to keep it simple for now, it is a very basic language. Only primary functions of devices will be supported. Using light bulb as an example, you can turn it on and off, adjust brightness and color temperature (if supported), but there is no support for music mode or any dynamic scenes. To enable more advanced features you will still use proprietary APP. Moreover, not all device types are supported - cameras, video doorbells, robovacuums, big appliances and many other are excluded for now. Media streaming devices and smart speakers are getting support, but not in a way you have assumed . They are becoming Matter Controllers (not to be confused with Matter Devices), so you should be able to use smart speaker to control Matter Devices, but not visa-versa. Asking Amazon to play something on your Google device is not on the table, at least for now.
Matter relies on Wi-Fi and Thread as a communication protocol (both of them support IPv6), Bluetooth is used for device commissioning only . But not all devices that use this protocols are Matter compatible, and all devices relying on other communication protocols (ZigBee, Z-Wave, etc) can’t talk directly with Matter Devices. For example, Philips HUE relies on ZigBee, and had not unveiled any plans of abandoning this communication protocol. As a result, only Philips HUE Bridge will become Matter Device, no other Philips HUE products are getting Matter support, at least for now. The bridge will expose ZigBee devices to the Matter network acting as an “interpreter”, but you are not getting any benefits of Matter (no direct device-to-device communications). Also, if you do not use Philips HUE Bridge (use some alternative hub, or direct control from your phone using Bluetooth) you probably do not get any Matter support at all.
Many companies are taking similar approach. Aqara has already obtained certification for its flagship hub, so old ZigBee sensors will be exposed to Matter, plus they have announced new P2 Thread based Motion and Contact sensors with Full Matter Support. Yeelight will support their Pro line of products (Bluetooth based) via hub OTA update, plus we are getting some new Matter certified products. Unfortunately, situation with their Wi-Fi based products is still unclear. Majority of companies have not yet unveiled their plans in regard to this Matter. However, some have decided not to update their current product to Matter in an attempt to sell you a new one (similar otherwise) instead. TP-Link is not going to update any of existing Wi-Fi based devices, instead they are introducing new Matter compliant products. We will probably see new Tapo & Kasa products at CES 2023. Nanoleaf is now taking similar path.
There is only a handful of Full Matter Devices available right now. EVE have Matter certification for EVE Energy (plug), EVE Motion, EVE Door & Window. More devices are on the way for 2023.
That said, I still believe that there’s a great potential in Matter standard, but we should keep our expectations reasonable.

The newer bulbs can be paired directly to your phone by Bluetooth, but I want to say it's limited to like 10 bulbs or something? You can even pair bulbs directly with a single Hue dimmer switch. But you don't get automations or anything, since when you are outside Bluetooth range the bulb is isolated.

One of the big question that still remains to me, is how am I supposed to invite android users to join my HomeKit home, and how interconnectivity between the different home apps (Google, Amazon and Apple) will work, as we are supposed to be able to control 1 home with all the different assistants using Matter. However I see no such options on any of the Apps currently. So Matter does seems to work with devices, but not fully implemented when it comes to home Apps ?

Depends. If you want to run thread you will need a thread capable hub.
If you follow some other UA-camrs that cover smart homes they have great explanations.

*SMART BULBS* over smart plugs. My particular brand of "smart" plugs suck... 😂. They go offline more than they stay online (I have a very well planned wireless network so I know it's not the problem). Got rid of them for smart bulbs - success! I also learned the hard way that it is more practical to buy the 100 watt DAYLIGHT bulbs as there are times when a well lit area is necessary (looking for that spider who got away 👀). They can be dialed down to 60-40...watts if one prefers a lower level of light or even a range of colors/temperatures. Some of the switches don't support dimming, too.

  • @PythonPlusPlus

I like to explain it like this:
At the moment, every company that makes smart home ecosystems, has their own language. So if a company wants to make a smart home device, they have to teach it the language for every ecosystem they want it to be compatible with. Matter provides a universal language that every ecosystem has promised to speak, so when a company wants to make a smart product, they only need to teach it one language. This is good, because it means every smart product in the future will be compatible with your ecosystem, no matter what ecosystem you have.

I will never use a cloud-based automation service until their EULA recognizes that all data collected from my premises belongs to me and they only have a limited license to use the data to provide their serves and can't use my data for any other purpose. As computers get faster, a private cloud and feature rich system that duplicates the cloud-based Alexa, HomeKit, etc. features should be feasible. Matter unifying the protocol seems like a step in the right direction.
