Tristan, thank you for being so systematic and clear in your presentation, I’m a newbie, but you help me understand and learn the home security language. Thank you
Hi Tristan! Thank you so much. I understand it better now. I like the way you are story-telling things, together with the joke-aside. haha. Keep it up! Looking forward to learn more from you.
Best reality summary that I've seen!!! As a developer I can relate to your depiction. So many protocols (languages), and so little and out of date documentation.
Great explanations. I’m glad my search brought it to me. The Musk Speaker ad was too much geekiness for me but I’ll take it, and don’t get me wrong I loved the presentation style. Cheers!
Great video! Another thing that speaks for the future of Thread is that other buildings automations standards like KNX, DALI and BACnet also will be using Thread as a new wireless protocol.
Thanks for the explanation. When you talk about projects like Home Assitant, how would you make that work since something like a Raspberry Pi SBC wouldn't have the proper radio. I suppose you'd need some sort of bridge? Or maybe you're referring to the future?
Very interesting and clear video thank you! It's very interesting to see how the market is moving. Actually I'm working on something close to matter but also compatible with devices internal bus. This is allowing hidden electronic boards to be also accessible from the outside world! We are studying how to be matter compatible...
@@SmartHomePoint yup. Say I have heard that the thread isn’t performing or is robust as claimed to be. Is that true ? Or is this just teething period of a new technology being headed for wider adoption
I think it's probably just teething problems tbh; it's quite a bit of new technology for everyone to integrate. Fundamentally, Thread and Matter are good - so hopefully it is just initial issues. 🤞
Thank you very much for your video! Will Thread be backwards compatible? For instance, if make smart home now, with Router (that can be smart home hub as well) and several iot devices on zigbee, When Thread becomes reality, would i need to change all the equipment?
Thanks 🙂 It unfortunately won't be backwards compatible in that sense, no. A ZigBee hub won't magically support Thread in the future - they require different chips at the hardware level unfortunately. However a ZigBee (or Thread) hub can be upgraded to support Matter, because Matter is a software protocol.
Thanks, glad you liked it 🙂 Thread isn't necessarily better than other languages (ZigBee offers many of the same benefits as Thread, for example). Plus ZigBee, Bluetooth, Thread and WiFi are all part of the Matter project. So in that sense, what you say isn't 100% correct. BUT Thread and Matter were developed around the same time, and Thread is seen as the main language for Matter, so it does mean that Matter and Thread are a good pair (and Thread is probably the most forward looking smart home language). Hope that doesn't confuse things further 🙈😅
Great explanation of these two new terms. A little ambiguous in exactly if you can have matter without thread. Like some of the past concepts, choip, etc., seems these two methods seem to be gaining ground. I’m unhappy that companies are still fighting standards & hoping that more adoption becomes the norm for the sake of Home Automation.
Fun fact. My first thread devices - nanoleaf bulbs won’t be getting update for matter, instead nanoleaf will release new version. So I have bulbs I can only use with HomeKit for now. Maybe I will integrate them into homeassistant somehow
I have a reliable ASUS router and only Apple devices in home. I had all Philips Hue lights and they were great but you need the hub therefore making the response time for the lights noticeably slow. I recently upgraded to Nanoleaf bulbs and light strips that don’t require a hub because the HomePod mini and the Apple TV support Thread. So, cutting out the middle man, the Nanoleaf lights respond instantly.
That's awesome 🙂 Being able to cut out a central hub/bridge is always nice. This is definitely the benefit of Thread - since it's IP based, it will be easier to include in a variety of household products like smart speakers and routers.
There is one thing that you didn't explain correctly I think. For thread you don't need a hub, you need a border router and there is a difference. All IoT devices that are permanently plugged in to a power outlet can also be a border router. So if you have - for example - just one smart plug that acts as a border router as it's side job then that's all you need for your thread network. No dedicated hub for that.
Sadly, you actually have to own a 'local' hub that Matter people failed to tell the public... Even though Google max hub can do matter/thread, the max hub is completely useless if the Internet ever goes down!!! It is not matter compliant!!! So if your hub can already is a local hub why do you need matter???
This was the best explanation of matter I've heard!
Tristan, thank you for being so systematic and clear in your presentation, I’m a newbie, but you help me understand and learn the home security language. Thank you
Thanks for the comment, glad you found it helpful 🙂
Absolutely the best explanation of how Thread is the protocol of the future. Concisely detailed, thank you.
Thanks, appreciate that, glad you found this helpful 🙂
Very clear and concise explanation! Thank you very much.
Crystal clear explanation 👏🏼👌🏼
Good clear video 😺😺😺

you're so good with explaining, thank you so much!
Thank you for explaining. Very helpful.
No worries, glad it helped 🙂

Haha thanks, glad you liked the video and totally-official-and-legit Musk ad lol 😆
Thanks for this! Perfect explaination give me more! Subscribed 😊

Thanks, and great point - thanks for pointing that out. That's true, and another big tick in the Thread column for sure.
Thank you very much for your explanation!

No worries, glad you liked it 🙂 That sounds an interesting project, I wish you luck on getting it Matter compatible 🤞
Pretty good explanation
Thanks, glad you liked it 🙂

@@SmartHomePoint yeah true. Fingers crossed🤞🏾

thanks for the great video. One question based on what I understood, Thread outruns other "languages" simply becuz it was written in Matter, correct?

Thanks, and yes, it's still a little unclear at times - but I'm hoping that it's clearer in 6-12 months 🤞

Oof, that sucks. Nanoleaf have usually been quite forward thinking too. It sucks if they won't easily support Matter. Thanks for the update 👍
Thats not by accident.. if they can sell you 2-3 times the same device it is a win for them.
I have a reliable ASUS router and only Apple devices in home. I had all Philips Hue lights and they were great but you need the hub therefore making the response time for the lights noticeably slow. I MUST have the Musk Speaker!! Does the sound come out of the ears?
Two years later, what are your thoughts.
But it doesn’t make zigbee obsolete yet. It will be long before it will support so many devices as zigbee.
Yes that's true, good point thanks. ZigBee will be around for a long time for sure. (Heck, X10 is still going strong in some markets).
Didn’t really explain why you have an issue with using “Matter/Thread”. People lump them together because they go together 🙄
dw i'n hoffi coffi iawn 😁☕
Rwy'n cytuno 😅

What's with the patch on the back of the Musk smart speakers head? 🤣
Uhm... it's a... secret 😬
You left off Southern English, and Klingon.
Kinda like you calling Z-Wave.. Zed-Wave.. instead of its actual pronunciation "zee-wave"
Hah thanks. I'm a Brit, so it would be illegal/treason to say "Zee" for Z 😬 Well, maybe not illegal, but definitely not encouraged for us Brits 😅
