- Judy Garland is one of the few female singers to attempt this song & she sang a powerful rendition of it on her show. Her performance is captivating ... with irresistible magic. Of all the songs Judy sang, this is THE ONE that brings a tightening to my solar plexus ... you know, the feeling in your gut when you are experiencing something special, a strong emotion. Judy gave us a part of her soul in this song, & it is seen in the expressions of her face, her eyes ... as she grabs the notes in 'Just Keeps Rollin' Along' & then releases them ... you can almost see the lightening in her hands.

The only singer who ever sent chills through me when she sang...truly one of the greatest voices. She was a natural comedian too. Loved her!!!
Strip away the stupidity of myth and gossip, legends and tales, the reason that Judy Garland continues to resonate with every new generation that discovers her is simply talent. That is all that will remain one day when everything else is forgotten.

When she gets to the part about being tired of living and scared of dying she looks so genuinely distressed. The most authentic talent the world will ever see.

she knew what she how it felt.... poor woman. One of the biggest talents ever, and she died in a run down house in London with just another loser who wanted to squeeze the last penny out of her. What a waste...

Judy Garland was a magnificent artiste. She was unique the emotion she conveys is breathtakingly moving. A true legend.
If you could ever define a career in a moment, this would be that moment. This is Judy at the top of her form. It can't be performed any better.
I can see why she got two Oscar nomination for acting.
This song has never been done better with the emotion that it needs to simply convey its message.

You know...when Other singers sing, and Other performers perform, that is all there is---a song and a performance. But, with Judy...every Moment, every Note is an Experience (to borrow the word from The Judy Garland Experience, if I may!)...she does not merely sing, isn't just a performer...she is so much more--Pure, Raw, Emotion, Pain, Joy...All of these things, that No One Else has Ever been able to duplicate. Once in a Thousand lifetimes...There Was Judy.

This truly immortal talent died broke. We burrow into everything these days. Where did her money go? She earned way more than Sinatra and Como. That's the "book" I want to see ... who stole Judy Garland's money?

Who stole her money? That's pretty simple. Her agents, her accounts, and her husband. Yes she earned millions. Her account/S didn't pay her taxes, so she owed the Government millions. I believe when Judy died Sid had a lot of money, and Judy had none.
still think this is the greatest performance of all time - nothing has changed my mind. There's just something about it.
Definitely a very worthy possibility! But my vote is for Rockabye at Carnegie. She sang it that night as if it had never been sung before and would never be sang again...Those four encores are really on the strength of Rockabye, BUT YOU GOT ME RECONSIDERING...LOL
Come to think of it...:"When the Sun Comes out" from the show is a contender as well!

This should be required viewing for those hideous over-singers on American Idol...
And the other genius behind this is George Schlatter. His five shows are by far my favorite of the entire series; it was what "The Judy Garland Show" was MEANT to be.
Young Judy Garland would not be able to sing this song like she does in middle age. This is a lifetime of pain. The problem with American Idol is that it's all young adults. Maybe if we can put some middle aged people on there to sing we would get more of this. And less autotune for sure ;)
This is TALENT, No one holds a Candle to her. She's lived every word of this song. If you watch her sing Stormy Weather & I can't give you anything but love baby. I just love this Woman. She was truly genuine.

She was who she was..no doubt about that. There will. NEVER be anyone like her!
The cut-away to the lower camera looking up was a perfect transition, at just the right moment. This viewpoint allows us to live the song on her face. I think this song and Battle Hymn of the Republic are my favorite performances from her show (although I've not seen all of them). The genuine emotion that wills her incredible voice - it is truth.

One of Judy Garland's finest moments of musical and acting genius---- a frail, torture-torn woman adopting one of the true classics always associated with a big black man on the docks, lamenting the pitfalls of his life ------ and turning it into a torch song about her own life. "Get a little drunk and you land in jail" ---- "I get weary and sick of trying, Tired of living but scared of dying!" Yes, she was the Greatest Entertainer in the world, and I sincerely believe Liza used her own ability of being a great actress to become a great singer, just as her Mama had done.
With all due respect to Liza, but, Liza was never anywhere near the talent or entertainer that her
Mom was. As a matter of fact, Liza wasn't the best singer among Judy's kids. Lorna was. And now neither one isn't much of a singer. Liza's just plain awful, and Lorna's approaching just plain awful.
Liza was talented (her voice, which was so-so is completely shot, as is Lorna's) she could dance (not a fan of modern type dance) and she was pretty good actress. Put she was no were near her mom's talent. But, then again who is?
Michael Burns I disagree that Judy was “torture-torn”. Things happened in her life that were challenging to say the least. But she had drive, passion and was a fighter too: I have read biographies about her life and what strikes me is how courageous she was in the face of personal struggles. Yes, courageous! Not only did she have to content with a variety of shady men, she also struggled with her mental and physical health, as well as financial stress, and she did all this in the spotlight of her celebrity status. Her life was scrutinised and dissected right before her eyes (as it continues to be). Throughout all the turmoil and upheaval she endeavoured to keep on keeping on working to keep afloat. She was complex because on the one hand she was a fighter, on the other she caved in to despair and terror. But I don’t see the tragic figure she is sometimes portrayed as.

and the audience sits there instead of ON THEIR feet looking like a bunch of zombies. That was a Standing Ovation performance and those clowns just sat there.
I trip on that fact every time I watch the video. My only explanation is it was so good they were in a state of shock!
It is a true Metamorphosis in ,the deviding of race ,or kind ,or skin color ,or gender ,of the Human Race ,
just to come out from an egg ,than a worm,than being dormant as a pupa ,just to emerge ,as a Human Being.
