I am a teacher and a novice sailor and you did a marvelous job explaining and demonstrating the various charting options. I have been on that Noaa web site and you showed me a bunch of options...thanks so much!

migrating from one boating lifestyle to another and a big program i am working on, i have for the past 10 years watched every educational sailing video i could find, many times. non as, or more often than yours.
might stop in to shake a hand and give a personal thank you, if that'd be appropriate.
for what its worth, everybody that comes to me for education gets sent to ya'll and a very select few other youtubers for education and a couple for safe entertainment
we are putting on a huge program the bon voyage will be from your region.

Excellent point about potential weakness of keeping electronic chart view zoomed out. I struggle as a single hander, managing the boat, while navigating. I heavily relay on electronic charts. I should be keeping position on a paper chart as well, in case of loss the chart plotter. I keep a separate hand held GPS as a means of back locating the boat on a paper chart.

I’d appreciate more information about electronic devices for navigating. Specifically things like smart phones or tablets. I’m concerned that especially WiFi enabled tablets (such as iPads) that do not have internal GPS capabilities may appear to function with the various navigation apps and may give uses a false sense of security when they’re out of WiFi range (or even when they’re tethered to a smart phone and they’re out of cell phone coverage). Thanks.

Which is why they are no longer printing paper charts. Almost all commercial shipping has removed all paper charts from their ships and boats because the electronic navigation has been shown to be safer. You can download chart updates on a weekly basis and more frequently if needed, no need to correct your charts anymore. And people made lots of mistakes when it came to converting from true to compass and in measuring things on paper charts.

I am getting informed about navigation and to me the example of the racing crue is not really useful.
They are pros, they know how to use the tools, and rating involves not having time to react .
I would prefer more information about region and accuracy.
For me,the great advanrage is the interactive part of electronic.
When tech comes to a point where every single ship cruising around is uploading actual data about the recent situation.
When a recreactional sailor is ging to places where the charts are not accurate,he or she can decide to upload their radar and sensor data etc from the place to provide actually information. This for me is the future of e navigation.
Like we can Update things on gmap as local guides.
And paper ist still patient and already outdated by the time you get it printed IMO.

Paper doesn't run out of batteries and doesn't have electronics that fail. To be out and about with a single electronic device when it is all you have to navidate with is pretty much nuts so now you need at least 2 chart plotters or maybe 3 with one held in some moisture proof container at the ready with fresh batteries. My biggest peeve is they don't do the 'big view' too well. You have a little screen with no overall picture and zooming in/out is a pain. You have to keep going back and forth and tracking the details in your mind.
The point on the racing crew is they didn't see the detail at all because they were crossing an ocean. It had noting to do with reaction time and everything to do with the zooming in/out issue mentioned above. A paper chart would have shown the shoal and they would have seen it. The electronic one required them to zoom in over each little bit of the route to see the shoal. Ideally newer software will show hazards as you approach them so you can avoid them but obviously their software did not.

I found opencpn unusable. I struggled with it for a few hours and it would constantly hang and change zoom or have mixed levels of zoom. I am going to give it a 2nd chance in a bit with someone else who uses it but for now just using navionics. I opened it up and it just worked how I expected out of the box. I am sure there is a learning curve there as well but it isn't in getting the basic app to even work.

Possibly there is a problem with your computer... I have used openCPN successfully on four different computers with no problems at all including an old Win 7 PC, an old Win 10 Laptop, a recent Win 10 Laptop and a new Win 11 PC... All worked just fine with openCPN and none of the issues that you noted... T

Why bother with electronic chart plotter if it is so risky? Asking for a friend.
