Been watching this from Sweden, with much appreciation. I understand the darkening of moods every now and again - I read the newspapers too - but please appreciate my appreciation: from my point of view the US seems to be all about MAGA, gun violence, evangelical fanatics, gerrymandering, book banning, racism, and on and on it goes, so it is really heartening to meet some very normal, level-headed and sense-making Americans who do what they can to go against the apparent flow. Also: since atheism is still such a taboo in the USA, I am pretty sure that there are a loads of atheists out here, keeping their head down, simply not to get into trouble. They will be heartened by what you do and maybe find the courage to speak up one day.

There are millions of open atheists in the U.S. and many more who just identify as non-religious. It's not really a taboo anymore. I've been an open atheist for decades, never really been a problem and I live in Texas.
