Why do you have inalienable rights in America?
As a landscape photographer, l love VISITING ldaho, it’s very beautiful. As an atheist, I’d NEVER live there.
I live here in Idaho. I know what you mean. It’s getting kinda crazy here.
Born and raised.
I lived there for 35+ years. I left 5 years ago and haven't regretted it for a second. It's gotten even more extreme since then.
As a Wiccan, I definitely concur! There is a growing number of states where sadly even the idea of visiting is enough to give me the heebie-jo-jeebies, much less living there (Fuhgeddaboudit!), and after the slew of ultraconservative laws passed there of late Idaho definitely makes the list!
Thats what is great about the USA you have a choice and people should have the ability to live with like minded people that was the entire point of the Europeans coming to the "new world "
Idahoan, born and raised. I see how crazy it’s getting here, and it concerns me. I want to do something about it, (besides make comments on Facebook) but I’m afraid of what could happen to my family and my home and my livelihood if I speak out in public.
thats what they want
We live here too and feel the same way.

It's also good for your mental health to know that you're among others who feel the same way.
I used to work for a police department in a major tourist city in California and I don't know how many officers or command staff who could not wait to retire with their guns and move to Idaho - specifically Coeur d'Alene. That was their dream.
With their generous California pensions of course. So the godless ones will be funding the 'self-reliant' Christian nation.
I don't imagine you're surprised by the notion that police
work attracts too many bullies and social conservatives.
I've often declared there should be much more deliberate
screening and action to limit that. "Sensitivity training", indeed!

"Last time we mixed Religion and Government, People got burned at the stake". This is my new bumper sticker!!!!!!! I need a second that says something about how religion was used to justify slavery.
How about, Exodus 21:20-21
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
I want one that reads “Science is flying us to the moon. Religion flies us into buildings!”
@@dragondancer1814 So TRUE!!!!!! Love it!
Actually the last time we mixed religion and government, we got Israel and nazi Germany.
Luckily, one of the two was destroyed before they could aquire nuclear weapons.
I live in Idaho, just south of the city of Boise. I almost didn't move here from Spokane Washington because I was worried about the racism. It was prevelant in the Spokane area and of course in North Idaho. I have since learned that Idaho has historically been pretty liberal. We had one of the first Jewish governors. As an Atheist, I am not out. I don't tell people that I am an atheist. Many know that I love metal/alternative music and have collections of skulls but I can't tell them that I don't believe in god. It's so sad. I was not raised religious and also not in this area but from an early age I knew not to tell people. Like it's some crazy secret!
Moved here from Oregon for the inexpensive houses (at the time lol). I thought how different could it be from Oregon? Boy was I wrong.
@@hildy208 I just hope the Greater Idaho movement doesn't get any headway. The last thing we need is more people that are conservatives

One of my pet peeves is that Idaho has a smaller population than the city I live in, but they have two senators. I don't think this was the vision of the Founding Fathers. They imagined the U.S. would be made up of states of similar size and populations.
The Senate was SPECIFICALLY placed to make sure each State was equal regardless of population differences, that way each Governor would think were was some sort of "equality" and the rural farms would join the Union instead of siding with King George. The Senate was also seen as an easy WEDGE for the rich to support the New National Constitution, since they could most cheaply and simplistically control the Senate. And certainly the rich in each state would make sure their favored pro-rich Mercantilist representatives became the Senators.
"They imagined the U.S. would be made up of states of similar size and populations." That's ludicrous.
N. Dakota, S Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas in total, have fewer people than my city and they have 8 Republican senators.
yes, it was.
If the states did not get equal representation
in at least one of the two houses of congress,
the constitution would not have been ratified.
Each of the thirteen former English colonies
were all independent countries then.
The Founding Fathers knew all too well the perils of marriage of church and state (Church of England), and they wanted to ensure it wouldn't happen in the United States. ☮❤
Yes, indeed.
They kept all the tax breaks though, now Judges are who decide what are "State-Accepted" religions to get unfair tax benefits/deductions.
The Founders also knew about the witch burnings in Massachusetts.
Founding fathers put in the constitution of only implying to prevent a single dominant religion. Having religious based views with laws is allowed. Sorry if you don’t like to hear what hutch and state separation really is but that is the meat and doesn’t mean what you wan it to.
The writers and ratifyers of the Constitution
included the 10 amendments to constrain Congress,
including the establishment of a national religion to
protect different churches in different states. And note:
the leaders ( the elite) were not believers, but mainly
followers of the trend of the time, Deism.

A small band of Muslim dissidents managed to take out three of the largest buildings in NYC, along with the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania - along with 4 large jet airliners and several thousand American lives.
The event caused the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, added TSA security to airports, and locked cockpits along with "Sky Marshall's " on board many domestic flights.
Politically motivated supporters of a man (who is the equivalent of an old, angry Taliban cleric) in the USA managed to get inside of the Capitol building and nearly into the chamber occupied our elected officials. I shudder to think about what might have happened to them if those angry dissidents had found their way inside the Senate.

The fact that Idaho is the second most Mormon state doesn't help matters at all.
The Mormons and the Evangelicals are not necessarily on the same page. Evangelicals often disparage Mormons as not "true" Christians and the Mormons are only in favor of government/church fusion when they are the ones in charge.
It's also the second most "red" state, slightly behind Mississippi... But not for long at the rate people are moving there.
@@tvtothepoint, Marjorie Taylor-Greene doesn't want the Blue State newcomers to "bring their woke values" and wants a five-year moratorium on their suffrage.
Actually there are more Mormons in California than in Idaho and Mormons live in the eastern part of the state. Their numbers decrease rapidly in Boise and north to the Canadian border.
Lived in so. central ID 12 yrs. We watched a town just over the river deteriorate under the influence of Free Staters moving in, getting onto school boards and local govt commissions, then blocking road repairs, schools improvements, health regulations for CAFOs, etc. My husband, who uses a motorized cart, experienced this new christianity persomally on our final 2 shopping trips to that town's Walmart: a handful of shoppers followed hom around, deliberately blocking both ends of an aisle so that he was repeatedly hemmed in. Fortunately, our town soon opened its own big box store and we never had to shop north of the river again.
Sorry l don’t understand what’s going on. I’m Australian and over here we have a few religious whackos but this Christian nationalist thing isn’t a problem. I don’t understand how not fixing roads and schools or basically abusing the disabled or not having health regulations is somehow “Christian”. What’s the logic there? How do they relate that to Jesus? How do they justify it as a Christian thing? It just seems bat shit level crazy. I mean, not fixing roads will actually kill people.
Stay vigilant for secularism at local and public places where democracy rules
This is very concerning- we're luckier in the UK, but still, Christian nationalism does loom, at least a bit.
robert: That is why they are already defunding public libraries in some places in. the USA. They can not, legally, censor them as they can with public school libraries. So they are just strangling them by cutting off public funding.
Should not Christian nationalists have a place in a democracy? Democracy is for the people… right? Are we all supposed to just pretend that we want to live next door to each other, and accept other people’s lifestyles? If that is the case, then what is the point of FFRF? What, it’s okay for atheists to promote and defend their agenda, but it’s beyond the pale for Christians? It seems to me that there are bigots on both sides of the spectrum.
@@thegentlymad5769 We just don't want Christians using the force of government to give Christians rights that we can't have.

I lived in Idaho as an atheist for decades and I was attacked physically, violently and repeatedly. The people there are against human rights, public education and honest sincere conversations about ethics, morality and equality. Idaho is becoming more extreme with an influx of people from other states bringing hate filled agendas. The gentrification of the entire state is happening now and it is a real threat to this nation's democracy. If you believe in equality and justice for all do not turn your back on the extremism of a state with a small population because it has grown by 50% in the past few years and the people there are selling military surplus and advertising this on billboards. If you believe in the constitution and the first amendment then stand up now before the conservatives put that on the "used to be" list along with Roe v. Wade!
I'm atheist and nobody attacks me....
You're most likely a POS.

I recently purchased an e-book by Sarah Posner titled Unholy: How White Christian Nationalists Powered The Trump Presidency And The Devastating Legacy They Left Behind. I've only read a few pages--now I need to finish it. I'm an atheist in WA state and this is a dangerous movement imo and the fact that it's right next door geographically is upsetting.
It is in all states, not just iDAHO.
From across the pond: how on earth has a supposedly modern country allowed religion to strangle it?
it's more the red states, not all states. the west coast and hawaii are ok and so are the new england states. so far.
The white conservative Christian nationalist movement began in this country in 1789, and though most followers of it are the minority, they are very vocal and are the majority in the government. The plan, as laid out in Project 2025, the 900+-page blueprint for conservative action, will pretty well take us to a Christian theocracy, where all citizens will have equal rights----------as long as they are Christian and the right evangelical Christian.
Not surprising that the “don’t tread on me people” want to tread on everyone else. Funny how that works.
I no longer live in Idaho. I do love the mountains. But it's getting hard to even visit. They are in love with their guns.

"Christian nationalism" is an oxymoron. Jesus did not preach nationalism to the people. He preached repentance and the Kingdom of God, not loyalty to a flag or a constitution. Nationalism can easily become idolatry and result in a legalistic theocracy.
Oh my, How I DO wish it was, their own Private Idaho and the rest of us need not be troubled by them.
No way. I have to deal with these crazies on a daily basis. They're flocking here like flies on poop, which is what this beautiful area is fast becoming because they lack the bascis of civilized social skills, like picking up your own trash.
So do we.
Christian nationalism has nothing to do with Christianity. It's just a loophole for those who use their beliefs as an excuse for their bias and hatred toward others whom they judge to be not as perfect as them. They have apparently lost sight of the fact that Gawd is the one who does the judging, not mere mortals like them.
Christianity has many oppressive fundamentalist forms. Christian scripture is full of horrible passages that can be interpreted as supporting an oppressive authoritarian culture.

This was interesting, I got a kick out of the title 'ask an atheist', as if thats somehow an expertise now:) "Ask a bald guy" would be next, but I'm joking.
From what I've seen of other areas, religious dogmatism usually proliferates in areas of economic abandonment by capital investment. In North America thats rural places which are basically used for resources, then abandoned when the resources are gone. HIstorically the population is disposable, and brought in initially from other areas and not meant to put down roots, thats why you see ghost towns all over.
Some stay, and essentially the religious extremism comes FROM the economic disenfranchisement, becaues you DONT see it so much in urban areas or rich areas.
So the issue in america is whether such populations were well known to be created by policy planners and capitalists who simply abandon entire demographic and geographic areas as what they now call 'zones of sacrifice'. In other words, are these the predictable consequence of modern american capitalism? I don't know, but it 'seems' to be true, and if true it means that the danger is NOT 'them', its the makeup of the federalist system of corporatism which CREATES them, because if the modern economy teaches nothing else, its that human beings are becoming less and less necessary as producers in the economy, particularlyt he resource economy which is rurallly located. So the problem is only going to get much worse.
The/our federal government needs to cut off all federal funding of all state that have out lawed abortion. And I think a national divorce is a great idea.
