It can be done, but it is a little easier, and less expensive if you do it more than once, to have adjustable push rods. He did remove the rocker boxes. What I didn't see him do was replace bearings or clean out screen sock.
What an excellent presentation -- I feel like I now have a thorough understanding of camchain tensioner removal and replacement. I have a 2003 Dyna Low Rider and at 32,000 miles my inner shoe was completely worn out and broken. I caught it in time and based on your Part 1 and Part 2 videos I have completed tensioner replacements. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
One of the Best Twin cam Cam Chain tensioner replacement videos on the Net, definitely a must watch video for those attempting to do this work on their Harley, Great job, thanks for making this Video.
Absolutely fantastic video. I have an old twin cam with a ton of miles so I have done this a bunch by now. Your video is the best I have seen to date, and you explain the engine timing procedure very well, something that most of them skip on. Thank you so much for this!
@@delorean1 I have a question. When I remove camplate it will be marked as it comes out with locking tool in place, I'm leaving oil pump in situ, when I reinstall do I still need to do the aligning process, or will it be in line still as I have removed it?. Thanks.
Great Video!! Although I am still afraid, I will get everything apart okay, But, when it comes to putting everything back together, Oh boy!! My Shovelhead I had back in the mid 80's was the last time I attempted to work on my Harley. I also had a great friend that rode and worked on Harleys forever. He had a garage at his house and every tool imaginable. A great friend that helped me anytime I needed it. Then in 2000 I bought an 883 Sportster that was brand new and only needed maintenance which Harley would do, because I moved away from my buddy. A few years later after selling the too small 883, I bought a low rider which Harley Dealership also did the work on, this was back in 2004. Since then, I haven't ridden until last month when I went and bought a 2001 Dyna. I have hardly any tools and no friends that can help me, also no money since I became disabled and can't make the money I used to make!! So, I HAVE to learn to do this myself or sell the bike I just bought. Which selling it is out of the question since I'm way older and disabled, if I sold it I'd probably never ride again!! So, this video really helped! So far, I haven't checked for wear on the tensioners, since I don't ride much at the moment. Now it's time to buy some tools a bit at a time so I can at least check the tensioners before I ride again. I need sockets, wrenches and the gaskets to check them. Get that done hopefully this month, and just keep watching these two vids over and over again, so if I need to replace them, I'll have a better understanding of what is involved and hopefully get the sucker put back together correctly!! Rding makes my old, broke, disabled butt feel a heck of a lot better!! No way would I even attempt this job if I had not seen this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

@@delorean1 It did. I actually needed tensioners. I caught it literally just in time. There was a big chunk missing sitting in the bottom of the cam chest. Nice video. I think I'm going down this path so i appreciate it a lot. Lots of miles on my 05', the previous owner had it done about 40k ago. Bike is pretty tired though so im contemplating a 95 kit, this inspection might be the deciding factor.
What is your recommendation on doing this when there are adjustable pushrods installed? Would it just be easier to take rockers off and leave the pushrods adjusted the way they are? Or do you have another video detailing pushrod adjustment when reinstalling? Great video btw!
As an outsider, having never owned or ridden a Harley I'm wondering if it would be possible to redesign the cam layout in order to put an intermediate gear between the cams and eliminate the inner chain, apologies if this has been suggested before, I'm new to this channel.
When the pushrods are at the lowest position how do I know if its at the lowest on the compression stroke Edit: looked at the service manual I see whacha did it just states to make sure the lifters are flush with the top of the crank case cover. Like you did.
If you don’t have the centering tools just slowly snug the the 4 bolts little by little after turning the motor through 3 rotations. So 3 rotations loose. Then run them in until they touch the plate. So finger right basically. 3 more rotations of the motor. Then snug them down some. The service manual says how tight. 3 more rotations. Then final torque. That’s how we were taught by Harley in school. Also. The chain and sprocket don’t have to remain EXACTLY as they come out. The only part that matters is you don’t flip the chain around which would cause it to spin opposite of the way it spun before it was taken out. That’s not good. But if it’s not on the same teeth of the sprocket that doesn’t matter. They don’t stay in the same spot while it’s spinning anyway
I would have thought the school would have used the centering tool. Its the same one I use for my shovel head tappet blocks where centering is crucial for cam alignment. I know the chain the sprocket alignment isnt crucial, but there is some old lore about quicker wear if you dont keep the sprocket on the same spot. Not sure given todays QC if its still applicable but a lot of folks still do it out of habit.
Great detailed video! Would you be willing to do another one on lifter and cam wear on the TC 88s? I have mine out and am not sure if they need replacing or not. Thank you so much!
Aside from clear and obvious damage, there are specific parameters for wear of both the cam lobes and lifters, this video shows the removal to get to both of them.
Exactly. If he's just going to sell it. Who cares. But if he's keeping it. The bearings should have been replaced. BECAUSE , they fail just as often as the Tentioners 🙄
Did this last winter. I suggest if anyone is doing this, to upgrade to the shoes made with Stanyl Polyamide the ones from "Cyco Gaskets" and not the stock Harley crap. Also, always replace the crap Harley INA inner cam bearings with torrington bearings. Always good practice to upgrade Harley parts because Harley engineers have shit for brains!
What do you mean . When you say slack in both bolts on one Revolution one at a time. Are torqueing at 15 ft lbs then spinning the gears then setting the final torque ? Thank you. I'm going to be using this video to maintenance my bike.
Can anyone tell me where I can purchase one of those inner tensioner removal tools? Please and Thank you. Also a big thank you for the great 2 part how to video. Very helpful!
Nice job, I'm buying a used 2000 night train with 20k miles, I'm getting this checked before I ride her much, is there a "at mileage" check this by Harley for the twin cam?
Great videos! But now I ran into a problem maybe you can tell me where I went wrong. I started this project to replace oil pump thought it had gone out originally. Come to find out it was one of the tensioners. Followed along with you to replace mine on my 05 superglide fxdi. I got everything put together and tried priming as you did but wasn't getting pressure. Got the gauge out etc. Unbolted everything all over again. I had my wave washer in the pump in wrong position. Fixed that bolt everything back up. Got oil pressure now but not firing. Has a weird hollowish tone to it when it cranks. Gonna take it all back down a 3rd time but hoping maybe you have an idea on what to look into as I tear it down. Any advise would be appreciated.
you covered pretty much everything and this is the budget way. No expensive 'upgrade' kits- just fix what's broken. Love it. You didn't replace the inner cam bearings but from the vid- they looked okay. Thanks again for making these vids.
I'm going to pick up my 03' 100 anniversary Soft Tail Springer and have not given them the check yet. I'm definitely going to ask them if this procedure was done on my bike and if not I will leverage it against the final price OR AT THE VERY LEAST, make them ((give me)) the kit to do it myself. It has 13000 miles on it and part of me wonders if the previous owner trashed the engine from not doing this. I'm used to changing slingers in an old bmw slash 2, so this will be a piece of cake. Great video. I subscribed on the spot. I wonder how much the shop I'm buying the bike from would charge for this service?
looking at the new Harley chain tension-er installed it looks like the same plastic that was the original problem. Is this an graded part with a fix or installing the same old problem

Adjustable...... You can leave the top end on, and remove the pushrods.
Nice video. Would you recommend upgrading to hydraulic tensioners, or how often would a person need to replace these spring tensioners?

thank you for sharing this video, greetings from Italy
Excellent delivery. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Extremely professional and helpful
Glad to hear that!
Hey man. Would it be possible to rent your tool to remove the chain tensioner. Nobody makes or has them in stock anymore.
Excellent video. It was a great help. Thanks so much for posting.
You're welcome!
As an outsider, having never owned or ridden a Harley I'm wondering if it would be possible to redesign the cam layout in order to put an intermediate gear between the cams and eliminate the inner chain, apologies if this has been suggested before, I'm new to this channel.
When the pushrods are at the lowest position how do I know if its at the lowest on the compression stroke
Edit: looked at the service manual I see whacha did it just states to make sure the lifters are flush with the top of the crank case cover. Like you did.
Great video. Very well done and 100% informative. TY !! 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Its recommended to replace the bearings when doing that
If necessary, though not required.
Exactly. If he's just going to sell it. Who cares. But if he's keeping it. The bearings should have been replaced. BECAUSE , they fail just as often as the Tentioners 🙄
@@randymiller5008 Hi dummy.
Great video. To the point. If you don’t remove the oil pump do you still need to perform the pump centering procedure?
No need

I’m told they are on eBay. A bit hard to find right now.
@@delorean1 Thank you
Great video. How many miles on the bike before replacing?
Nice job, I'm buying a used 2000 night train with 20k miles, I'm getting this checked before I ride her much, is there a "at mileage" check this by Harley for the twin cam?
Well done. Good narration and excellent presentation
Thank you kindly!
This is a superb video. So helpful. Thank you for posting.
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful.
you covered pretty much everything and this is the budget way. No expensive 'upgrade' kits- just fix what's broken. Love it. You didn't replace the inner cam bearings but from the vid- they looked okay. Thanks again for making these vids.
You're welcome, I tried as close as possible to follow the workshop procedure.
Thank you. Great Video
I had asked a couple other questions but found the answers below in the comments.
You are welcome!
Textbook work. Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Keep the videos coming great job explaining the procedure
Thanks, will do!
Great video , step by step Make it look easy man !
Thanks 👍
looking at the new Harley chain tension-er installed it looks like the same plastic that was the original problem. Is this an graded part with a fix or installing the same old problem
