Just a few weeks ago, I scored a "very nice for it's age", 05 5.9 Cummins with the g56 behind the motor. Mine like yours, without the gear vendors, it screams like a banshee with the 3.73 gears at highway speeds. The plan is to do the same to mine next spring, towards summer. Right now it's in the middle of winter here in northern Indiana, and being my brother and I would be doing the install ourselves, and under a shade tree. Warmer weather is a must.
Man, I have never shifted my 5.9 at 3000rpm like you are doing at the beginning of the video lol. I shift at like 2000 when unloaded and cruising around, 2500 if i'm towing heavy and need the power. I'd feel like i'm going to blow something up taking it to 3k.
Great video James! Definitely appreciate the time showcasing your setup. I don't know how many times I have tried finding a hidden 7th gear while cruising at 75 MPH on the highway. lol Did you have to modify the drive shaft at all to utilize the gear splitter?
Did you have Gear Vendors install it? I'm assuming shorten driveshaft? Are all the gears spread fairly evenly or is there any overlap when splitting. When splitting do you just flip the switch and back off the throttle? I've been looking into this for while but never pulled the trigger.
Any body have a idea how much this would run ? I have a rebuilt 48re done before i bought my truck is it worth doing it or should i focus beefing up my trans first, im on 35s no tune and banks nonster ram intake , and k&n , yea it can " tow" like nothing but unloaded man this thing is in the slow lane to keep it from screaming, thanks guy
Hi Daniel, I sold the truck. As noted on the video, the unit was $3,200 new and you then need to have your drive shaft shortened and balanced. Worked great gearvendors.com.
James, we have a 2006 Ram 3500 4x4 5.9 crd Cummins 6spd and looking into the gear Vendors U/O Drive for our truck. What length would be needed for the new driveshaft?
Hi Matt, I don’t have that truck any longer. I had a fellow in Cincinnati OH install the Gear Vendors overdrive, and they sent the driveshaft out for machining. You don’t need a new shaft, you will just have a machine shop cut the old one, install the yoke and re-balance. Doesn’t add much cost. Take care.
I just bought the same truck you have this is my first diesel and 4x4 I own I noticed in 6 gear going about 60-65 I'm almost at 3k rpm this isn't normal is it? Thanks in advance for any help.
@@jrlinco93 The engine should be revving just under 2000... Part of it could depend on whether you have single rear axle or dually and the gear ratio in your axles.
I wouldn't. And there shouldn't be any need to if you're obeying towing speed limits. I only use OD while towing with my NV4500 if I have a very light load, flat ground & can maintain rpm's at 1,800 or higher. You're just asking for trouble otherwise.
Just to clarify for anyone who may be interested, gear splitters work for every gear. So when he said "7th gear" it would technically be 12th

That’s rad!!! I never thought to put that behind the 6speed! When I have my 04.5 with the NV5600 it droned so bad while towing nice work great video😃
That's what I have now! Was considering this set up. It's not recommended to use double overdrive (7th, lol) when towing.

I don’t have it but my truck without this is operating at 21, 22 hundred rpm’s.
Have you had a change in your fuel mileage with the lower RPM's?

Same. Most likely because his truck is all stock. They're pretty choked down in stock form

@@jrlinco93 it could also depend on whether or not you have gremlins of any type roaming around... aka electrical, etc.
Can you use the OD well towing a 18k 5th wheel??
Not if the transmission has factory overdrive. Double overdrive is not recommended for towing

Sorry, but I sold the truck. No issues at all for 20k miles and ran if for three or four years.
Your truck has 4:10 gears not 3:73 my rpms are the exact same as yours at those speeds
Agreed my 05 has 3.73 auto on 275/70/18 tires I'm at 2000 rpm at 72-73
Yours must be an auto. The auto overdrive is a lot better then a g56
