    you wondered how this song would play on stage and the answer is it never made it to the stage. it's called first burn because it was the first draft. Lin said that this version works as a pop song you'd listen to on the radio but he would have to make this song become a full scene on stage so he rewrote and changed a few lines and added the fact that Eliza was performing by herself towards the audience and not facing Hamilton, as she was on this draft. great reaction, loved your comments!

      Thank you, Livia! I wasn't sure at the time, but I have since learned that it was a first draft never performed onstage. I prefer the private setting of the final version. Eliza's historical public reaction was not heated nor directed towards her husband, but privately, Burn makes sense. As for First Burn, I love how direct it is for a pop song, indeed, but I don't think it gels with how we receive Eliza's character to be. I admire that he shifted so wildly from the first draft to the last! Thank you for your great comment. Please stay tuned for more content coming out soon!

    Something I found interesting is that the situation I think of when I hear the two versions of this song are different.
    In the version that was part of the show, even if you're just listening to the audio you can tell that Eliza is alone, and the song is more or less her talking to herself. Even if she's posing her questions and grievances towards Alexander, you don't need to watch a video of the performance to know he isn't physically present to hear them. Burn in the show is very personal, and privet, and Eliza isn't trying to overtly confront Alexander about his behavior.
    In First Burn however it's pretty clear to me that Alexander _is_ implied to be physically present. The lines "Don't think you can talk your way into my arms," and "You can stand over there if you want," makes it pretty clear this is much more similar to what happens in Angelica's cut song Congratulations in which Angelica openly and physically confronts Alexander with his transgressions.
    So the song isn't so much Eliza lamenting and privately grieving her relationship to herself, it's her having a confrontation directly with Alexander about the situation, which is why the tone is so different.

      Thank you, Madison! I am so intrigued by that, because if you saw my Satisfied reaction, I question why Angelica is made into a main character at all, because she cuts out after that song. Then I learned that her 2nd Act song, Congratulations, was cut from the show. People seem to like it so much that I wonder if it should be put back in. The role needs a second song to round it out. I appreciate the suggestion and I will check it out!

    Great info in this vid, Dayle. Glad to learn about voices "in cannon." What do you think about how this version compares to Philippa Soo's "Burn?" I like this one a bit more because I am a huge fan of harmonies! My "First Burn" reaction is also out on my channel! (:

      Hi Doctor Disney! Thanks for asking. I think there are 3 things to think about in answer to your question. First, the version of Burn that is sung in First Burn sings Eliza's original lyrics. They are more raw, more vindictive, more angst-ridden. These are not qualities I feel Eliza in the final version of the show exhibits. So, the second answer is that I believe Eliza's character in the show is better served by the rewritten lyrics we hear in the Broadway version. I like Eliza retaining her reserve even when dealing with her anger, which does emerge, but for me, it's more powerful that she permits only one overtly expressive outcry in the song. It speaks volumes of who she is and keeps her seeming elevated, above the baseness of the situation as we would believe a founding mother to be (though Miranda has done a great job of making her human, too). Third, we have the production of First Burn as a quintet of Elizas. This would never have been meant to be included in the show (there's only one Eliza!), but rather to showcase the talented women who played Eliza along the way in the show's earlier stages. It's a brilliant composition in its arrangement and creates its own piece of music that retains the more outward expression of the lyrics apart from the constraint of needing to represent the character in the show. It stands alone as a piece and could easily be on the Billboard charts, were musical theater music more widely popular (as it once was). I hope that answers your question! I enjoyed your reaction immensely. Everyone needs to go see it, too!

    • @DayleSong

      Hi B Patterson! It's nice to see you again. For both you and Doctor Disney, let me share Britannica.com's definition of a canon (one /n/) :
      Canon, musical form and compositional technique, based on the principle of strict imitation, in which an initial melody is imitated at a specified time interval by one or more parts, either at the unison (i.e., the same pitch) or at some other pitch.
      When we repeat the same line in succession, it is a "canon" or "in canon". The most well known such piece as a form is Canon in D by J. S. Pachelbel, often heard at weddings---aka Pachelbel's Canon--although I find it to be more in the form of a theme and variations.
      I hope his clarifies further rather than confuses! Is a very simple thing, really!

    Hi, Dayle! So excited to see you react to First Burn. I wonder what you think of this as Eliza's song? I know you enjoyed it musically and you had a great time listening to the different castings of Eliza! I did too! But I wonder what you'd think of it if they used this for the broadway play instead of the Burn we know now.
    I like this song as much as the next Hamilfam-- I originally thought that Burn didn't justify the anger that Eliza would have felt at the time, when I first heard the song. But then I realized, Eliza's not the type of woman to scream her lungs out or give Alexander the verbal smacking that First Burn did.
    Burn is perfect the way that it is. It's so very Eliza and I can imagine her reacting similarly. Reigning and internalizing all the anger, refusing to show the world that this shocked her the way that it probably did.
    But I like First Burn because it shows that Eliza knows Alexander's feelings towards Angelica, but trusts them not to do anything behind her back. I like First Burn because it shows her as a mother and as a wife, her concerns for the children's future and what people would say about their family.
    Would like to know which version you think is the most "Eliza" reaction!
    Looking forward to more Hamilton reactions and analysis. Have a good one!

      Hi Claire! I am in complete agreement with you. Eliza, as she is presented in the musical, has a restrained character. She is a woman of the highest social standing and while we want to see her lash out, it seems more credible that her proper upbringing would rule her reaction. Also, the surprise at the end is that she is a title role, at least she shares the title with Alexander, and so first, she is contrasted with Alexander as an opposite (which attracts here) and second, she is being uplifted as a heroine, one of our foremothers, a Madonna figure in many ways. Therefore, she is best shown in the most upstanding light that is to reflect American values in the purest form. I think the lyrics for First Burn reflect what a modern audience wants to hear or be able to say to Alexander. What the show offers us is more nuanced. I prefer the show version for those reasons, but I very much enjoyed the creativity of First Burn as a stand-alone song using all the Elizas.

    I like this one so much better. I think it's just a tone preference for me. I just am not a fan of Phillipa's voice or maybe just her interpretation and choices which I get were for the character and made sense, but wasn't a rich sound that I like. I feel so inept trying to describe what I didn't like. She's very talented, I'm not saying she can't sing. Thanks for the reaction and I do like what you said in the beginning about the differences.

    • @DayleSong
      @DayleSong  4 роки тому +5

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts, N W. They are 2 very different songs made for 2 different forums. First Burn through its arrangement is designed to be a stand-alone song, and because of the chorus of voices, it offers a richer effect than the solo in the show. Philippa is a very effective actress, and her voice reflects the moment really well. But I think the women in First Burn have a clearer sound and easier access to their full range. Also to be fair, they are in a studio singing one song in front of microphones. Philippa is performing a tour-de-force role onstage, at least in the film, so her vocal production will veer towards storytelling much more than vocal prowess. I think she does a remarkable job communicating both the hurt and the restraint in the film. You feel for her more because she is holding back her tears and anger. First Burn is designed to impress more than elicit sympathy. Thanks for watching!

    • @nw6866
      @nw6866 4 роки тому

      DayleSong I totally get the difference, it’s just a vocal sound preference. I don’t mind the storytelling etc.and normally would go more for that over the song that impresses. I have recorded in a studio, so I get it. Thanks for the analysis. Always like hearing and reading your opinions.
