This was the first version Lin wrote for Burn. They decided it was too angry for Eliza and not heartbroken enough.
Which is such a shame, I think the anger here would have been a well fitted final straw moment

@@averybisexualbookworm well its also giving Eliza a tranquil fury vs the outspoken anger she has here- I believe her tranquil fury is more appropriate for the show given what we’ve seen in the musical, and historically, we don’t know how she reacted to the affair, so giving her anger a muted heartbroken reaction feels more /right/, while Angelica can be her outward feelings
@@Psychoinnocent so well stated! I've seen reactions to "Burn" where people say she's not angry enough, and they are disappointed in that being the song written for her. It irritates me because that's making Eliza's feelings about what we want and not who she was. Any version of a song will only be able to speculate that, but people calling for her to be angrier is them being in their own feelings about it. Sometimes it can be hard to recognize we are making it about ourselves when we get caught up in what we want for someone because of our our own feelings.

I do think the other burn was better for the actual show, but I do wish the lines “your enemy whispers so you have to scream” and “when will you learn that they are your legacy, we are your legacy” are absolutely amazing and should have been kept in. I like this version better overall but I think the now burn is better fit for the actual show.

I love the lyrics of first burn but personally I don’t like the harmony they are all good singers but I don’t like the harmony so if it was just 1 person I would love it a lot better. But I love both burns so :3

I actually prefer First Burn because it really portrays the anger Eliza rightfully feels in finding out Alexander cheated on her
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. As a song I prefer First Burn, but for the context needed for Eliza in the Hamilton production as a whole Burn is a better fit because in that moment she would have felt more than anger and I think Burn is more layered in the portrayal of the pain, hurt and betrayal Eliza would have felt along with the anger

to put it simply, First Burn is a perfect encapsulation of her character, including her anger and pain contained in a single song, while Burn is the perfect song in telling what she emotionally went through from beginning to end

I always thought that the weakest part of burn was not mentioning the children. so in first burn when eliza says "explain to the children" i get CHILLS

I’m not sure if you’re aware Hannah, but all of these women played Eliza either on Broadway, Chicago, West End, or one of the touring companies! Rachel is the OG west end Eliza! And Julia Harriman performed with Lin in Puerto-Rico! Oh and Shoba Naryan was the OG Eliza in the Philip company! Ariana was also the OG Chicago Eliza, I’m not sure about Lexi however, I think she might have played Eliza once Pippa left

I think that you can also interpret the title of First Burn that that was the first burn that Eliza was going to suffer from so many more things that were going to cause pain and suffering to her, I did not think that the title of the song was because that It was the first version of Burn but rather the title of the song was because of what I just said. agreed! first burn was my introduction to the musical so it’s obvious i have a soft spot for it and i’m not ashamed to admit i like it better than burn, but if there’s any part that first burn was lacking it’s the entire ending starting with “the world has no right to my heart”

Sorry to bother you but a suggestion I have for a future reaction is pretty much any song from the musical "We Are The Tigers". It's so good and not as popular as it should be. Although all the songs are amazing I would suggest "Wallflower", "Don't Even", or "Before The Breakdown"! P.S I really enjoy your videos!

I was lucky enough to see Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza on the West End, and she stole the whole show, she's like a Disney princess.
My partner and I saw it in early 2019 before I ever listened to the soundtrack and I was blown away by Rachelle and Allyson! Wish we could get a West End soundtrack with them on as well.

It’s part of the Hamildrops, those are different versions of the ones in the musical, all those women were Eliza’s in different companies of Hamilton: Arianna, Shoba and Julia were part of the tours, Lexi was the replacement of Philippa and Rachelle was Eliza in the West End.
Btw, love your channel 💜 you should react to Carrie Hope Fletcher, Rachelle Ann Go, Patti Lupone and Frances Ruffelle singing a medley of Les Mis, it’s beautiful!

All of these women have played Eliza in different productions of Hamilton and Lin has talked about how they all bring different emotions and portrayals to the same numbers and how all of them enrich the musical in such a wonderful way. This was the first version written of Burn, deemed too angry for a moment when Eliza's supposed to be heartbroken more than anything else. I find it incredibly satisfying.

Yes! This was an earlier version. But it was decided that they wanted a more heartbroken version rather than an angry version.
I mean, the anger is there in the Broadway version but in this one, it’s more pronounced. This one is all about calling him out and throwing his mistakes at him. The Broadway one is more about her being “you broke my heart and announced it to the world, so I’m simply done.” Both are beautiful. But this one just has more power
"Your enemy whispers so you have to scream" and "And when the time comes, explain to the children the pain and embarrassment you put their mother through" are my favorite lines. I love the way the word "mother" is said.

'First Burn' is as it sounds. It's the first version of 'Burn' that Lin wrote, but he scrapped it because it seemed for too angry, vengeful and snappy for Eliza's kind and forgiving character. He decided rather than leave it to be forgotten to re-write it for a group and put it on the 'Hamilton Mixtape' album.

It’s called first burn because it was actually the first version of the song, but the people writing decided it didn’t fit the character’s personality. I REALLY love this version, I actually sang it with four other people in choir for a performance bc we loved it so much!

Okay, but it's just great they have five Broadway Elizas singing this together. Phillipa Soo is and always will be my favorite Eliza and favorite voice of the entire cast, but this was amazing.

It’s his first draft of burn sang by 5 “Elizas” from Broadway, West End (Rachel) and national tours. Rachel Ann was also Gigi both in West End and Broadway before she took over Eliza on West End.
The one you said that sounded like Phillipa is Rachelle Ann who originated Eliza in West End.
She probably is the best Eliza right after Phillipa for me coz she brought anger to the character and a whole new take on Eliza as well, I just love how perfect her casting was.
