Wow Wow... Its so interesting to find an amazing percussionist, legendary "Messai Murugesh Thatha" aka I.S. Murugesh. who replaced the band member Ghatam player - T H Vinayakaram. Messai Murugesh Thatha is a multifaceted personality from South India, He acted in many South Indian films during 80's, also he was an ace percussionist in film industry those days, he performed many solo percussion acts, he use to appear on TV shows as solo percussionist, actually he was a dynamic replacement for this particular show or may be the whole tour we don't know. He immensely matched the band's high standards. Check out his interesting solo in the 5th track on timeline 59:14, in this short solo he used various unconventional materials as percussions (coconut shells with metal finger ring, sand paper, glass bangles, bamboo logs etc). There is no Tavil on his solo, its Nagara (two separate kettle drum) its a common folk instrument exists all over India. And the very first instrument he used on this solo is Tundhana - single string instrument this exits in almost all the folk music tradition all over Indian with various names. Let's Salute the Great Person!!! :-)

Saw them one week before this show at the Royal Oak Theatre in Detroit, Oct. 30, 1977. The BEST concert I ever saw!
The orginal Shakti (band) had an unmatched energy and feel. I do believe much of it was the chemistry between McLaughlin and Shankar.

actually, those studio recordings, arent studio recordings at all, at least first album was live, they didnt even have songs worked out, just blasted outwards :)
Marvelous Master piece. Every music lover should hear this.Language no barrier. Became a fan of L Shenkar after hearing Shakthi album. But Vikku vinayagam was part of it. Here I.S.Murugasan, also known as Meesai murugesan (Mustache murugesan) was known for creating beautiful music from unorthodox materials. Here too, he used Coconut shell, Saw etc. Watch timeline from 1.00.35 to 1.01.12, he used Coconut shell to produce that master piece. I still remember him doing these stuff in Govt tv channel National Tv (Tamil) during 90's.My Childhood memories.

Great to find another Shakti live recording. I hear reminiscences of "Rolling and Tumbling" in Danse du Bonheur.
Listening to this music today after almost 30 years !!!! Has a cassette copied from a CD which I lost many years ago. Amazing experience !!!!! Thank you for posting this.
I've been listening to Shakti since 1975 but I never got the chance to see them live. I live in Philadelphia but was 3 months into college out of town on the day of this performance. Unsure how I've missed it all these years but I'm deeply grateful finding it. It's no contest the best quality live recording of Shakti I've ever heard. Bravo to the sound engineer. The quality is really, really quite impressive.
@aaronrosenbloom2722: I think they're on their 50th anniversary tour this year if you're still interested (minus L. Shankar on the violin, but still!)!

I totally agree. He was in his own zone for violin. Oddly, I believe he needed someone his equal (JM & ZH) to push him. Such is the case sometimes with the highly gifted.

In Danse de Bonhear, it actually sounds like Shankar has drone strings on his violin. Perhaps he is just plucking the open strings at the end of every phrase.

@@joeblow8380 JM is comping all sorts of stuff behind Shankars Danse du Bonheur solo, but starting from 5:05 or so, I do believe Shankar is plucking, banging, bowing some of his open strings also. The sound is that of the body of a violin. It is especially evident as Shankar does a sort of trading 4's starting around 7:10.

What's the instrument that sounds like a single stringed soup can sliding on a broomstick?
I played the sample of it to Dr Trichy Sankaran, who says it's a South Indian folk drum, similar in design to the Nigerian talking drum. We're not sure of the name yet

Various Percussion been used on that solo. 1) Tundhana - single string folk instrument, 2) coconut shell played with metal finger rings, 3) Nagara - two kettle drum, again a folk instrument, not tavil. 4) Kanjira. All been played by a South Indian multifaceted personality Messai Murugees Thatha aka I.S. Murugesh.

He had to return to India during the end of this, their last tour.
