Ed I would never cut that beautiful spike just because "The Judges" said it's not perfect. Too sad that we do not see imperfection (according to others) as the determination to be an individual, which is what truly makes special, special.
Very well said Coline but unfortunately this was an act which, in my opinion, had to be carried out and I hope a couple of growers will do their best with the divisions. Ed.
Hi Miracle Orchids. I had to split this plant because the new growths were so overcrowded that the were growing deformed. Anyhow it split into 4 divisions and pleased two forum members by giving two away which I'm sure they will appreciate. Have a wonderful weekend. Ed.
Awww the judges should really reconsider, I love that orchid. I would love to have a piece of that small Roth. That would fit nicely on one of my windows next to my phrags.
Yes these small roths are very lovely and I know of no others in the orchid world. Unfortunately I have only two pieces which I will not part with until one of them needs to be split.... maybe 3 or 4 years!!! Ed
well what's done is done...but i agree with most that it is a shame to have your plant split up..was such a heavy specimen sized Roth...but you must have confidence that you will get it back to that size again some day hehe...I personally wouldve just refreshed the media and not divided, but you are the Paph guy Ed. Good luck and happy growing!
Cheers Terry. I am no better paph grower than you are. I just had to split it because the new growths were all becoming squeezed together and growing deformed. Anyhow,, as you say, what's done is done so we have to get on with it and hope that all turns out OK. Giving a couple of the divisions to a couple of guys --- I haven't met, but I new they were after a roth . Take care, Ed.
Hi Thelma. They should all take with the good roots they have, I knew it was a bit drastic but I had method in my madness. A couple of paph growers I converse with on youtube and orchid forums have always expressed a desire to have a roth ---- so I am sending them both a division foc!!! I might add that I'm a bit soft under 'the cap' as well !!!!! Thanks for watching and have a nice day. Ed.
Interesting , thanks . As for the 'judges ' I question their judgements sometimes ! Maybe your plant was bred to have more compact leaves ? Your plant did not want to be split ! I would have just cleaned up and re potted . Be nice to see an update on how they are doing ?
Hi Scott and I do apologise for my late reply.....I have just found your comment. Splitting that plant was the worst thing I have ever done. ....I should never have done it. The plant was bred to be small and the breeder of it said it was the first time he had seen one in bloom.....just one quarter the size of a normal Roth. Sad to say it didn't make it in the long run and this is one thing I will never forgive myself for......Take care and thank you, Ed.
@@EdsOrchids , am sorry that I was right about the breeding , and a first timer at that :-( Re potting is fraught with issues as it is . Splitting any plant is the last thing I will do . I had a micranthum fall in 2 pieces , roots were not an issue , there were none ! Doing ok for now . Sadly we all keep learning . Have a good day .
Good evening Carla, I'm pleased to say the plants are doing very well. They always take anything up to a year to show any growth and adaptions to the environment. Thankyou for your comment. Ed
Beautiful species! Actually the adult plants are quite hard to get here in germany and also quite expensive. I needed one so i had to buy a young plant. Lets see how it will look in 2-3 years. Take Care!
I don't have the rothschildianums any more after cutting down on the paphs. They are indeed very slow growers but if you can get it to bloom for you in three years time you will be doing very well. Take care, Ed.

Oh dear lord! Ed please don't split it! That's the advice anyone told me about my Claire de Lune. It's been in one pot for 3 years growing like crazy and blooming 5 flowers last year. Aaand then I saw you cut the spike and my heart sank. Heh forgive me being all emotional but it's just sad because it's a super plant and I loved when you got it I'm bloom.
Hi Robert. Thanks for your comments but it was something (IMO) which had to be done to this plant. It was becoming really unkempt in appearance and the new growths had nowhere to expand to -------- I thought you might like a piece you said on many occasions that you would like a roth!!!!! Ed.

oh dear! yes please that's a wonderful offer from your side! Can't think how to repay you for it though.
No need to repay me Robert I know it will be going to a new home and you're young enough to grow it and watch it bloom again. Just pm me with your address again and I'll take it from there. Ed

Ed you are too kind! Should I send it on the Orchid forum ?
Ah, Rothschild's slipper. The rarest orchid on Earth, and thus the most expensive. It's only found in one place, a particular mountain in Borneo. It can take up to 15 years to bloom. All that time, perfecting itself. A lifetime for six perfect flowers.
Mount Kinibalu is the mountain and it's all a matter of patience if you want to keep these beauties.......they don't require any special treatment to grow them......just don't let them dry out. Ed.
Hi again! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My biggest paph (about 40cm across) is Vanguard glaucophyllum x rothschildianum. Hard to find information on, do you know about that plant or do you have one? I think it is a multi floral?
Wow!! thre days and I haven't replied to you....please accept my apologies. Any plant containing rothschidianum is definitely a mulri=floral plant. Rothchildianums come from an area in Borneo near Mt Kinabalu and I believe that the ground in this area is rich in magnesium. so that should give us a little information of the plants requirements. The area also is the area for Sanderianum which are both known as the King ( roth ) and Queen of all Paphiopedilums They love warmth, good air movement and never let them become dry. Sorry again for the delay....take care, Ed.
@@EdsOrchids thank you so much for your knowledge, I am very excited about my paphs, both growing new leaves and my big one a new fan. Please do not worry about the delay, I am so grateful for your knowledge, take care
😥 you're a brave man Ed, I wouldn't have divided that beauty!! How's you recent eBay purchase phrag spike coming along? Mine is still there and coming along, another one had just started but I think it's failed which is a shame.
Hi Fiona, It just had to be divided all the new growths were tightly crammed in a small area. The popowii has just opened both blooms and they are looking OK I'm hoping the sepals will get a little longer though. Ed.
Have you ever tried to grow paths in that sort of how it's called glass fiber or something of the sorts it's like fluffy media I got few paths in that median and im not to sure if the plants like. I thinking to plant it regular bark but the problem with bark i keep my paths always in water so it decompose to fast. IT was funny moment to see then you said so now we have 3 divisions and sudnetly one division split apart and here you go now we have 4 Hehe, Do you plan to sell any those divisions? I would be happy to buy one. Thanks Ernesto
Hi ARTPOP. I have never heard of growers keeping their Paphs in water...… Yes for Phrags but not Paphs. Paphs should be kept damp and watered when approaching dryness, They should be planted in an open mix which lets in loads of air. Sorry Ernesto I gave two of them away and kept two for myself.May have a look at them on my next video. Ed.
@@EdsOrchids oh I see I think I just mixed it up though I received some Paphs before that was kept really wet in that fluffy media and roots on the bottom of the pot was rotten. Thank You anyways and looking forward to see more videos of yours. 😉
I just sent you a message about this Orchid that you're working on right now that's her!!! since I am talking into my phone and I don't know how to pronounce her name I'll just call it her but now I know her name and I'm excited because you're about to teach me how to grow her I hope and I just received a message from you but I have not read it yet tell your wife she better be careful cuz you have a true admirer out in Tampa Florida😁😁😁

I'm curious by the "dragons Blood" you use. Is that an oil or a soap? Would I use cinnamon instead? Boy, I cringed when I watched you cut off that flower spike.
Hi Aprille, Dragons Blood is the red sap of the croton lechleri tree from the Amazon. You have to use the 100% unadulterated sap for the product to be most effective. It is available in the UK from eBay and I suppose the USA eBay will be the same. It's not over expensive and comes in 30ml dropper bottles for well under $20. Cinnamon is OK although I have not had the same results with this as with the 'sap'. Another big Paph lover ....... brilliant. Ed.
Fascinating, I really appreciate your skill sorting your plants.Gives me courage to maybe have a go when my plants flourish like yours ! 🤔🤞
Thank you Helen.......I just treat all my orchids for what they are.....plants!!
