How to Reuse an old CRT TV with Modern Equipment

  • Hi, this video shows you how you can reuse your old CRT television and have new equipment plugged into it like a laptop, Blu-ray player and a Nintendo Switch.
For approx £15-£20 you can set up your old CRT to take the place of a broken flat screen until you save up enough money to fix or replace it.
I show how to connect up HDMI equipment to the CRT TV using Scart and Composite.
    Many thanks Vince

Difference in picture quality between those Scart and Composite to HDMI converters isn't noticeable because that cheap scart converter outputs composite signal. RGB Scart would look a lot better but sadly those cheap converters doesn't output in RGB.
Edit: And Composite is the second worst input on CRT TV's. RF < Composite < S-Video < Component < RGB Scart (or Component if you have an HD CRT) < DVI/HDMI (only on some HD CRT's)

Never cared for those HD CRT TV from the early-mid 2000s.. Super heavy for the trouble it's worth.. A friend of mine had one manufactured in 2004.. It may have lasted 5 years before it started having problems.. Even the cheapest flat screen TV these days is much better than that... I bought an Emerson flat screen back in 2015 from Walmart, and it was around $120.. It's on all the time, I never shut it off and it still works like a charm.. Most people probably have thrown those out and bought a flat screen by this day in age.. Now on the other hand, I love classic TV sets from the 50s into the 80s..

All the 16x9 CRTs with YPbPr inputs in the USA are HD sets which have input lag and no scanlines 🤢

Great video but have noticed that the Blu-Ray player has Composite ports, also that CRT most likely supports NTSC and/or 60Hz alternatively you can use your PlayStation 3 and even modify it to play all Blu-Rays and DVDs, hook it up via either Composite, S-Video, RGB SCART or Component, Retro Gaming Cables sells S-Video, RGB SCART and Component Cables for the PlayStation 2 and 3 with the exception of Component Cables are compatible with the PlayStation 1. RGB SCART and Component Cables do not adhere to video standards as long as the display in question support the refresh rate this being a UK I’d guess 2000s CRT will support 60Hz PAL60 at the least (which the Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Xbox and Xbox 360 all support) while the PlayStation 2 in 60Hz mode supports NTSC 3.58 so if you’re not using RGB or YPBPR (usually Component or D-Terminal) on a 60Hz compatible TV make sure it does support NTSC 3.58 otherwise you’ll get a black and white image, same will be said for any console you choose to import from Japan and/or North America as well as NTSC DVDs and VHS tapes, there is also NTSC 4.43 but not many devices support it. I’m aware that a very few North American CRTs support 50Hz but will need Component Cables to show in full colour depending on the set

I see you had an S-video port on that CRT, that would have done much better than Composite especially in text sharpness. HDMI to S-video adapters tend to have Composite ports too since the audio still uses that same RCA connection.
SCART is kind of funny since I've seen models of PAL TV where those 21 pins only do Composite, weird but true. Being from NA you think it's all RGB SCART but I guess it just costed too much to put in all PAL TVs.

    • @loganjorgensen
      @loganjorgensen 3 роки тому +2

@Por Qué? That's what is funny about SCART, internally the hardware can only be Composite rather than RGB by default because it's just a port type. Sure you need the right kind of converter but S-video is superior to Composite especially for text.

      2-Component

So, I had a question- I tried the HDMI converter for playing an android based retro emulator box ( emuelec) on old CRT tv. The result was quiet okay, however I did see flickering. Did anyone know a way to reduce the flicker ?

Refresh rate. Depends on what OS you running and if your TV supports at least 75Hz

That acer lcd display isn't expensive on the used market, if it breaks down. Any other used lcd on ebay or amazon for a price like the converter can replace it these days.

I was born in 2008, I grew up with CRT TVs, they're very neat devices! Especially ones released in 1987 - 2007, my family had a (likely 1990s) NEC CRT TV in the living room of our house and it worked great but I don't really get why did they replace it with a fucking LCD. Hopefully we have another small but not portable Toshiba CRT from the 2000s and I'm thinking of hooking it to a CPU for use with a computer, any attempt of breaking a CRT back then also meant a broken hand instead of a broken screen but LCD is a fucking lazy invention.

would you figure that if you connected a CRT via AV to HDMI upscaler it's the same resolution as if you connected via HDMI only, I'm referring to the few CRT's that actually have the HDMI input...
