Remember the days of early "LGR Thrifts" when there were literally *dozens* of CRT monitors and televisions selling for extremely cheap at every single Goodwill? Man, I wish I had gotten around to picking some up from back then. Thankfully, I have one amazing (and GIANT) CRT monitor from my old Dell Dimension. It's held up extremely well, especially for being a monitor used on a weekly basis for decades. They built them to last.

One discouragement was/is paying recycling fees, and also possibly the necessity of transporting it to a recycling facility, or arranging for a pickup($). It's not only the electronics, but the glass itself has lots of lead. The ability for manufacturers to used leaded glass was grandfathered in, they were a special exception. I saw way too many on the sidewalk/front yard with big "FREE" signs. Actually, local Goodwills in Massachusetts refused to accept CRTs in the early 2000's. I'm not sure where you live where they did accept them. Maybe they were getting several other states' garbage?

I wouldnt be surprised when old CRTs become too scarce and overpriced, that some chinese factory would start rolling out some basic tubes again catering for the retrogaming market. Gonna take a while though, as tube TVs are very inefficient for transportation. You can fit so many more flatscreens in same size container than tubes. So the demand for product needs to be high enough to make it profitable.

@@HughJaeness Old CRTs, while still fairly cheap, are still a limited resource, and they're bound to fail at some point. Replacing caps is lot of work, but still doable, but if anything worse fails, then it becomes pretty problematic. So I can see why some would prefer if there were brand new CRTs to choose from. Not that I trust modern tech being any more reliable than old tube TVs.

    • @Kannamoris

I can't remember where I read it, but it was an article about a company that was one of the last ones still making the tubes for certain TVs. Even there was some niche demand for decent quality CRT screens, it would still not be enough for the company to manufacture them for a decent price.

a lot of "security" for buildings didn't care much, even if cameras got broken altogether. The whole set-up would be for lowered insurance rates only. As long as it was cheaper than LCD, they'd get CRT.
I did security at an office park not far outside of Boston in 2013, where 90% of cameras were fake; didn't function at all. A dozen buildings, almost all were 4 stories, and only one had real videocameras, B&W monitors, and it was basically just for the multistory parking. It also gave an indication about how much they cared about us patrol persons. Not a good feeling.

Just by sheer coincidence, I got a much older version of this same monitor from Computer Reset late last year. Mine was manufactured in 1982 IIRC (under a different brand name and beige) and it has normal RCA jacks on the back, both audio and video. When I tested it, the audio worked perfectly, but there wasn't any 15KHz whine, no heater warming up, nada. I hope that I can get it working some time. Yes, mine has the exact same chassis and it's 30 years older. Who would've thought of that?

@@Oldgamingfart How come the RF in is not affected by this? RF does have ground like any other connection. Just wondering how that works with a live chassis.
It's a shame live chassis can't be modded because RF only sets are in my opinion basically useless. I can't stand the static introduced by the RF modulation.

    • @kyle8952
      @kyle8952 2 роки тому +1

@@martinweizenacker7129 Live chassis RF connector is isolated by using a capacitor of a special size. Below a certain frequency, the capacitor blocks it. Above the frequency, it passes through. So the 50 or 60hz mains power is blocked from reaching the antenna connector.
In the past, some people would try to convert old 300-ohm tv to coaxial RF connector by cutting the old one off inside and wire a new one on. Then they would give themselves big electric shock and not know why.

One of the most interesting things I came across over the years was the "crt apocalypse " that was warned about within the FIGHTING GAME scene. CRT technology is unique in that the refresh rate is "nearly infinite" insofar that the input lag relative to the actual responsiveness is incomparable to any of the lcd or plasma based technology of today.
I definitely feel like "weight and aesthetic being the only reason" CRT is still a relevant technology that has real applications outside of the industrial sector. I can only hope they wont entirely disappear. It is of no surprise some games today emulate it with a layer to give people that same feeling, but it just isnt the same because even 144hz or greater screens dont have the same FEELING as using an original crt.

modern analog CCTV systems can do 1080p and audio over coax. So if the monitor has a speaker then something like an RF modulator might work. Or the monitor manufacturer has another "higher" model that has audio and to keep the cost down a bit they just leave out the speaker and RCA jacks on the lesser model.

Hey! That CRT is the ideal companion for security officers who have to spend long nights of boredom.
With this monitor and a good retro-console, no more boredom at work. 😅

That's actually pretty good picture quality over composite, especially for something produced when CRTs were pretty much forgotten already. Only some "chromatic aberration", but I guess the small tube size mitigates it some. A close up of the shadowmask pattern would be neat.

Audio would come through a signal over the coax usually for a monitor like this. There are ways to combine RCA outs with audio into a single format through broadcast coax, though easier with modern SDI nowadays.

Very cool little monitor. It looks like's it's right out of a security desk somewhere, setup to watch security cameras.

It probably will take audio from a camera with an sdi out (sdi uses bnc as the connector). My guess is that this could be used for an SD video monitor for film/tv work. I think I've seen these used back in my early filming days.

Clint, I think this video needs an NSFW tag. I don't think I have ever seen a man enjoy unboxing a new CRT quite so much. Also, really nice picture on that monitor.

I remember unboxing a dozen brand new CRTVs a few years back. We were emptying a school storage room.
I only unboxed them because cardboard and unnecessary packaging material does not belong in electric waste bins.....

Don't really care much about a generic crt monitor, but the sonic brought back a lot of memories of my college roommate and I playing sonic on my sega genesis in '93. So many late nights!

CRT's like this were used in CCTV systems in shops. As a kid I would walk into the shop and hear the whining of the flyback xformers, remember that well.

I didn't think there was even CRT's being made after about 2011-12. The last time I saw new CRT TV's in any store was in 2011. CRT's by 2013 must've only been been made for CCTV applications and PVMs.
