I have had mine since 2009. Look after it and it will always work.
Mine has always been a hard starter as I like to say. Floods easy, but runs well when it fires. I am on trimmer head number two. they do wear out.
Ouch. At least the customer owned up to it.
I had a 1962 lawn boy lawn mower that my brother in-law borrowed when I wasn't home. he ran it out if gas and put regular gas in it. it locked up the engine. I shot some WD-40 in the cylinder and got it to free up and got it running. I used for 10 years after that.
Lawn boy 2 strokes are legendary!
Ya gotta love a Lawn-boy!
I worked as a landscaper for years, this one summer my boss hired this college student and he was the type of person who knew everything and never asked questions, I think he thought it made him look dumb or weak to ask questions. After about 2 weeks of working there he messed up big time. He was supposed to mix the 2 cycle with 5 gallons of gas. We had the bottles of 2 cycle that the whole bottle mixed with 5 gallons made the ratio we needed for the weed whackers, blowers, saws, whatever. He poured the gas into the blue gas can but didn't add the oil, then he topped off the 4 leaf blowers, we were doing spring cleanup so we used the blowers more than anything. 3 of us grab the blowers and start going, one by one they each died. All within about 10 minutes of each other. We quickly realized the problem but it was to late the damage was done to 3 of the 4. We were able to dump out the 4th gas tank since it had not been run yet.
Interesting! I was given a FS260C by a family friend and told they had run it on fuel without enough oil in it.
Basically they ran out of two stroke oil and put what they had in it and said. That will do.
It ran less than a minutes and ceased. The Stihl shop said beyond economical repair.
This machine cost in excess of $1500. So I pulled it apart and found a hole in the piston and and ring pieces everywhere including blocking the crank shaft.
To my surprise I washed out the crap in a parts washer, found the bore was still perfect. I replaced the piston (which was hard to find) and put it back together and it works fine. If it was a cheap machine I may not have bothered but glad I made the effort to save it.
@DavoShed "It ran less than a minutes and ceased. "
I'm sure it's true that it ceased working, but the word you are looking for is, "seized".
My Stihl leaf blower is at least 25 years old and still starts right up. Sometimes it will smoke a little bit because I got the mixture a little off but I guess I've never really damaged it. For weed whackers, this spring, I went electric and I will never go back to fuel. They are light, not noisy and for my yard it is perfect.
Take a Sharpie and write 50:1 gas mix next to fuel filler cap. Works for me.
@@maxwebster7572 Not a white one
Write 25:1 and it'll last a lot longer! 👍
@@misterrigsby8491 What ever works for you. I have two Toro CCR snow throwers I have owned since 1998 and 2007 both run on 45 or 50:1 and have had no problems related to engine wear. Plus I can do without all the smoke.
@@mikejohnson4617 Yes Mike.. But snow throwers obviously operate in freezing temperatures so 45:1 or 50:1 may be ok and snow throwers are only used how much? half a dozen times a year?: I've ran my husqvarna 254 for 30 year on 25:1 stihl red oil then it went on to the green super when it came out and apart from regular maintainence its never been touched engine wise, And it's done a lot of work and I don't have a problem with smoke, Stihl reccomend you use 25:1 if you use other manufacturers oil? 🤔
Dont worry. He wont do it again 😁
Your apprentice, Dave, will rebuild that! Haven’t seen him in a while. He’ll gladly take that off your hands!!!
Not worth rebuilding. Anyone with enough talent to rebuild would walk away from this. This is Stihl’s cheapest line trimmer, you couldn’t sell it for enough to pay for your time.
Super customer, keeps you busy!
I have a four stroke weed wakker . Ive even done an oil change on it. Only mechanics would love this little motor
I have two Stihl 2/stroke 4/stroke KM unit 8 years old and they run fine every day.
Good video direct and informative! Thanks

Nice video. Thanks

Appreciate your channel very much! God Speed 73!
I'm in lawn care and have gotten preoccupied and put straight gas in my trimmer. I was fortunate enough to notice the color before I used it and used it and did the cardboard test, I think you recommended.
I use Amsoil Sabre, mix at 100-1,never have any trouble with two strokes.Been using this oil for 7 years.Even used it my sons KTM 300 at 100-1, works fantastic.
Awesome! I had some guy dropping off a near new Husqvarna saw with tungsten chain. After 5 weeks and 5 different parts replaced he finally admitted to lending it next door and they ran it with straight gas.
FS38 owners manual cover has a picture, the model #, and a warning to read the first 13 pages of Warnings. Buried on the bottom of page 5 are 4 lines that say it takes mix. Stihl should put on the cover MUST MIX GAS WITH 2 STROKE OIL 50:1. I have 4 Chainsaws, a Lawn Boy, 2 trimmers, 2 outboards, a Yamaha jet boat and two motocross that have two strokes so it is inexcusable to run straight gas but for a newbie, put the most important warning in front. Even cover the gas filler with a sticker.
I mean it’s kind of obvious just by looking at the tool if it takes mix or not
Orange tape if you have other people using it
@@Hellcat71782It’s only obvious if you know the difference to begin with. You know, I know, everyone who has been around 2-cycle engines SHOULD know, but there are a ton of people out there who know NOTHING about small engines. Maybe they grew up in an apartment, and this is their first exposure to a 2-cycle engine. THE MANUFACTURERS ALSO KNOW that some of their customers are not educated about engines. Since getting this wrong will instantly kill a new engine, the manufacturers owe it to this segment of their market to PROMINENTLY post a warning on the fuel filler and the owner’s manual. It ‘s not for us - it’s for the newly.
Of course, some folks just flat refuse to read ANY instructions, and probably deserve what they get. We all know them…
@@richardleclaire4923 if there’s only 1 spot for fuel and zero spots for oil it’s pretty obvious
There is a symbol on the gas cap 😂
Hi Dony, Toast for sure!
It hurts a lot more when the boys do this to a quick cut. I wish we could get those for 200 bucks.
👍👍👍. Thank you
I got lucky once, girlfriend's son strait gassed a FS45 Stihl, no idea how long he ran it, but it didn't seem to hurt it. It was an older machine, no idea if that had any impact on the results. It still runs good, it's over 10 years old.
Got really lucky with that one.
Perhaps there was some mixed fuel in the tank. Glad you lucked out.
Don,
Thank you for this. The only 2 stroke I have is a Stihl BR420. I mix my own and use the Stihl Ultra 50:1 oil
Wow the MotoMix and TruFuel at $30-$40US per gallon!
I run 42:1 in my 420’s.
Straight gas 😮😮
I can’t believe the sales person didn’t sell him some premix with his purchase.
what country do you live in where you have sales people for weed whackers? here we have 35 year old cashiers who complain about life and never being able to own a home while you are simply trying to pay for your purchase.
Yeah no kidding. It would have been an easy sale. He might of just picked it up at northern tool. Sad to see a good machine tore up. I wonder if there is any resale after fixing?
@@LygerTheCLawStihl was famous for only allowing retailers with salespeople to sell their equipment. They’ve loosened up on that I’ve noticed, now you can get some of their stuff in the box off the shelf. When I was selling them id put gas and run them before they went out the door. Buying 2 stroke mix doubles the warranty if I recall correctly.
This is the cheapest line trimmer Stihl makes, it’s possible the customer didn’t want to spend anymore money than they absolutely had too. Too bad they didn’t buy some Motomix.
@@user-rx1lc6mp5n that stuff is $15-$20 a gallon
"My wife put straight gas in it"
Some are straight gassers and look exactly the same
I once sold a well serviced 2 stroke motor scooter that had served me for 4 years without a single problem. A week later the buyer turns up complaining that the engine seized on him after just 20 miles. I immediately knew what had happened and told him it's his problem. Some people should be kept well away from technology.
I'd argue that a 2 stroke is anti technology 😂 so old and simple!
@@procrastinator1842 They're smelly, but cheap and easy to service.
@mikethespike7579 Yep. As much as I like the electric stuff my 2 stroke yard equipment goes forever...Victa 160cc 2 stroke mower 32 years old...victa weedeater 14 years old...
I know a guy that used premixed gas like you said and it messed up the carburetor i my self would never buy premixed gas for a weed whacker
Thanks for making videos with as few words as necessary. Five minute videos are great 20 minute videos and it’s siesta time.
moto mix, 10 times the cost of gas and some 2 stroke oil. i have a piece of junk homelite 49cc 2 stroke, ive thrown it against the ground, ran it without an air filter for 5 years and used it for a hammer and it still runs alright.
How to fry a Stihl trimmer!
thats why i use moto mix
Sounds fine put mixed in and try it
Talented
I like to buy the cans of pre-mixed fuel/oil. Yeah, it's a lot more expensive than mixing myself but it's in a small sealed container so it's not going to go bad on the shelf, and the containers are small enough I'll use it up before it goes bad once I open it. If I was a professional, the economics of mixing my own might make sense, but for just an average homeowner, pre-mix is the way to go.
Great !
i run my STIHL on motomixx exclusively... i dont use it a ton so its nice that its stabilized and has a long shelf life.. starts on the first couple pulls every time and have had it for many years.. cant remember my model number.. its a KM something 131 I think... it had multi heads and its wickedly strong on motomixx...
In addition to mixing gas and oil properly, you should also watch out for ethanol content because ethanol will also slowly ruin the engine, whether mixed with oil or not. I use trufuel in all my Stihl equipment.
Chicanic has seen all kinds of problems with the that premixed fuel.
Just an fyi, ive used amsoil two stroke oil at 50:1 . Works well , very little to no smoke, and when I pulled apart the engine for a cleaning I found all of the parts still had a layer/ film of oil all over them.
Been trying to explain this to my roofers , they go through a blower every roof job , they are very skeptical about putting oil in the gas lol
someone gave me a riding mower once that had been water glassed (sodium silicate , the "cash for clunkers" engine killer) without telling me . when i finally busted the piston loose w/block of wood and 5lb hammer , the piston and cyl looked like the piston in the vid .
Why would someone want to kill their riding mower? People only blew up their clunker trade ins to get the $3,500
VERY expensive mistake😲 I know there are 4 cycle grass trimmers, but the majority are 2 cycle. Because they put straight gas in their 2 cycle engines, I wonder if they put mixed gas in their 4 cycle engines? Wouldn't be as bad, but would foul up the plug and make it smoke like a chimney. Thanks for the video Don and have a great Sunday my friend👍
But would this same customer be trusted to put oil in the crankcase of a 4 stroke?? Must equipment I've bought has stickers and tags all over it saying ADD OIL or USE 50:1 FUEL
I’m usually super worried about making this mistake. To the point of nightmares. 😂
G day Don Boy too bad. Thanks
Without 2-stroke experience and not taking 5 minutes to browse the manual I can see where this would happen. The pre-mix sticker on the cover was a dead giveaway but..
Wise words.
I could send yiu a video of the worst run gas in a 2 cycle you ever saw. A friend bought this saw on ebay and it wasn't such a good deal the saw was junk. Great video Don.
had a guy give me a "saw" as payment for something, and it was so bad, you could pull on the starter, and the saw wouldn't lift off the ground until you got to the end of the rope. asked my mechanic what he could do with it, and he gave one tug and said, "the plastics might be worth saving"
My power equipment shop says the manufacturers mandate their brand of 2-stroke oil for warranty. All my stuff is old and out of warranty, and I use a good 2-stroke oil of my choice... I've never failed an engine... usually the rest of the machine wears out first.
Been running 2Stroke engines since 89, only had one die on me, Mainly Stihl Husqy and a bought used 1978 BIG Echo saw starts the best of all my tools I mix my own and keep a can of Aspen premixed for the lads to use if they run out on a job.
Only lost one engine to bad wear and that was a 2stroke4stroke KM 130 i'd had ten years and run 6 hours a day 6 days a week
Everybody complains about gas above $3/gal but you have no problem paying $35/gal for premixed fuel. Ethanol-free high-octane pump gas is available, mix your own.
Not in Canada. Thank the Lieberals
"It ain't got no oil in it"
Mmmmmmmhmmmm.
"I'll be damned, that Scooter is as worthless as one poor son of a bitch can be".
Did this with a Hyundai strimmer, worst part was it ran for like maybe an hour before it cut out.
Piston was completely trashed and not been able to get a replacement. Bought 3 wrong sizes since (even though I’d thought I’d ordered the right part)
Great content as always. I just cant understand how people do this??? Its not that complicated!!! When putting fuel in the machine, there is a color difference in the fuel. It just blows my mind.
Did that on my redmax backpack blower early in the morning in the fall got in a hurry. Had identical gas cans now one is painted blue.😁
Often happens when you have 4 stroke and 2 stroke equipment.. brain fade and get the fuels mixed up.
You know how batteries have to have a warning telling people not to eat them? Because people who eat batteries also buy power equipment.
I’ve always wondered what would happen but I didn’t know it would die that quickly
I ruined one in 5 seconds. I backed over it, but after I did the weed whacking!
Light weight boat anchor.
I have a leaf blower (ECHO) that my late brother purchased back in the early 1980s that I still use today. It has always had a 32:1 ratio oil gas mixture in it. Still running great.
I never use LESS than a 32:1 ratio mixture in 2 cycle engines. The only lubrication a 2-cycle engine gets is the oil you put in the fuel. To me, a 40 or 50 to 1 ratio is just not enough lubrication.
PS. I had a neighbor that bought a New string trimmer and always bought the Premixed 50:1 oil gas mixture in it. The trimmer lasted for ONE month after the warranty then LOCKED up.
.
I use 32:1 on old steel sleeve engines and 40-42:1 on modern Nikasil cylinder engines. Use a direct through the carb (engine running) decarbonizer a couple times a year and the equipment will last 10x longer before even needing a quick ring swap. Lastly don’t womp womp on and off the throttle all the time. Let ‘um eat at full power often and the carbon accumulation will be much less. People clog their engines with carbon and reduce lifespan simply because they don’t give’um full beans and let them run out to high speed. I have a couple of 2-cycle pump engines that run at 75-90% power for many many hours continuous and they hardly accumulate any appreciable carbon.
I also noticed that my echo blower prefers an oil rich mix. I also noticed it underperformed with premix and my own 50:1 mix. However, the other echo 2-stroke stuff purge molasses all over the exhaust with that higher ratio.
@@robertrada4783 @robertrada4783 Yes, that MOLASSES is just part of 2-Cycle engines. But that's what it takes to get a Good lubrication (I'm old school).
Side note:
Back in the 1970s and earlier, people used a 16:1 ratio ( 8 ounces of oil to 1 Gallon of Gas ) in Chainsaws.

I gave up on Stihl line trimmers due to the regular carburetor problems. I used the recommended can of oil/gas but it made no difference. I switched to a battery powered line trimmer and haven't had any problems.

An honest mistake. My way to avoid this is to use a container that is clear. I use old 1\2 gal booze bottles. Then you can see the premix in there. It usually has a color blue, red, green or some enhance the gas color. Like the Polaris ves. Its easy to see the oil is there. Using regular gas cans is ok too but to really know, I like to see the color in there. Like Donny said one day after mixing it, he held it up to the Canadian sunshine and said. "A beautiful blue mix". A suggestion.

I got an MS261 that was new and straight gassed for nothing, so I threw on a Hyway Nikasil Pop Up Cylinder Piston KIT and it has cut many cord since. Lost all compression? Stuck the rings in the piston?
If this happens to you, it’s cheap to order the piston and the cylinder and rebuild it yourself. completely rebuild a stihl chainsaw. It cost me 250-300 bucks. Not a big deal.
About 30 years ago I bought a new Weed Whacker that I paid over 400$ it was a big one with a blade etc... I used the oil that was provided to me with the machine but long story short it was confirmed that the oil was no good and it scratched all the piston and I never got my money back. I believe the oil was named Optimol or Optizol something like that.
Even if you rebuild it yourself with a new top end the lower end, IE rod was still run without lubricant. Will it run with just a new top end? Maybe, but it won't be long before the lower end locks up.

I may be the odd one here but I lay part of the blame on the dealer! I've only bought two new Stihl pieces of equipment, a FS44 trimmer and a MS310 chainsaw. Both times the dealer went over all the functions, explained they were 50:1 mix, sold the correct oil, then gassed up (and added bar oil to the chainsaw) and started them, doing any fine tuning on the spot. He then asked if I had any questions or would like to try out my new purchase there before I took them home (I didn't). Surely this would have prevented this. Or did the customer buy this from one of the "Pros" at an Ace hardware?
