I bought a FS commercial Brush cutter used it with the brush knife for more then 10 years . No problems I maintained a 60 acer estate in Brewster NY This cutter was a animal. Thanks Stihl for designing a great machine I recommend strongly to wear Stihl max body and head protection
I use the small guard with my cutting blade, and the large guard for weed whipping. Has worked well for a LONG time. No damage to me the user or my equipment.
Yes and that's wright way to use because you don't need big guard with string extra cutter when there is blade mounted.you put small guard then, and big one you use whit string and little blade...
Thanks mate, I used this knife today for the first time but I am really recommending taking off this black plastic part - mowing is much easier then, greetings from Czech Republic !
Mine didn't come with the black guard attachment. It looks like it might get in the way of cutting low. The orange guard works just fine. Really good instructions though. I've had an FS 120 for five years. Used to cut 1/2 acre of old pasture land. Like cutting butter when it's sharpened.
This video was a big help, but I’m having a problem with the blade vibrating badly, almost to the point of it being too difficult to hold the weed eater. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Nice clear video. Stihl recommend removing the lower black part of the guard as you can see the string cutter shows it's just for the mowing attachment.
You didn't have to take the whole head off of it by removeing that string part it comes off with it when you remove the whole thing that is a waste of time removing string out of the head you can take it all off at once and twist it back on when you are ready to use it again.
Hi. Thanks for making this video. I just applied my name played my machine and it looks like I did everything right, but I’m having a lot of vibration. I can barely hold onto it. I know it’s not loose but couldn’t be too tight? If you have any advice I would really appreciate it. My local shop is closed
Check the blade is located centrally. Turn trimmer upside down to attatch. You should see a lip in centre on the plate between the gearbox which the blade is located on. This will ensure it is exactly central. Also only really works on solid shaft trimmers.
I have an fs 240 and bought the Stihl brush knife for about $40 at the dealership. It works ok but is too small in diameter. Get yourself an Airecut blade which is larger, cheaper and cuts much better based on my experience.
Maybe I am missing something but if you are using the brush blade WHY do you need to put on a guard and one with a string trimmer attached ? If you are using the brush blade without any line why then would you need a string trimmer? Won't the blade work by itself without any guard or is that presumably too dangerous to use the blade without any plastic guard?
@@TheLightHouseLady The line cutter and skirt that come with the larger deflector aren't required when using the brush knife, grass blades or polycut plastic blades. Use line cutter / skirt only when using a line head.
@@freeflight4ever They include it so if you want to switch to string, you only need to replace the blade with string head. No need to replace both blade and guard back and forth.
The black thing that you inserted only for the string cutting head to cut the extra lenth of the string...its not needed for metal cutting Blade... It cant cut the extra length of the blade if any... :-)
First mi$take- buying from stihl. Some stihl machines can't even accommodate a 10" blade, vice the 12" ones I use, even on antique 21 cc Echo. Much better blade prices from Forester. Definitely need "kit" of stepped splined washers for machine to hold the blade, might need to trim guard (e.g. with bandsaw) so it doesn't get in the way. Mesh visor AND safety glasses, and hearing protection a must, as are smarts. IMO
Some serious mis-information in this video. The protective guard does not have the black skirt fitted for the three knife blade. That skirt is for line mowing. See the manual or the pic on the front of the box. And why strip the line head to take it off? Just unscrew it!
Thanks for the love bud ..great tool..I got a 2008 Stihl fs500 it's a beast eats through brush and thick woody growth..great video bud...I love listening your accent...wish I lived out in the sticks somewhere...squatch country...
Not true my friend. Stihl clearly warns the operator in the Stihl Manuals to use the metal guard when using certain blades. This blade is exempt from the change-over but the circular blades you use for small stumps- the metal guard is required. Cheers from Boston ☘️
Great video. Complete without being boring. And, none of the stupid , obnoxious music in the background I can actually hear what you are saying. Thx
Thank you for watching

Thank you
Thank you very much for posting this vid. Considerably more help than anything i got (or didn't get) from Stihl. You've filled in all the gaps. :-)
Thanks very much for this. The instructions that come with the attachment leave something to be desired!
Thank you for watching
Tfhanks so much. I'd forgotten how to attach it, after 15 years or so since I last used it.

Nice tutorial video, thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks!!!! Great upload and much appreciated!
This vid is 5 years old as I’m watching. Thank you nonetheless though. I have the Stihl parts/ blade but no directions.
Does good information have an expiration date?
Great video got a load of answers from this. Thank you
Glad my husband was able to help, thanks for your kind words.

Where can I buy that adapter kit you used?
Good job
It would have been nice to know info/source on arbor & guard kit
Exactly what I needed…🙏🏽
Great brush knife demo. Thanks!

Thank you for your time in making this video. However I did it but the blade won't spin, what am I doing wrong???? Any suggestions is welcome

The blade is either not centered or it needs balanced by using a file to file off the excessive weight off of one side.
what size is that last nut 3:25? I appreciate any help
Very good video
Thank you
Nice clear video. Stihl recommend removing the lower black part of the guard as you can see the string cutter shows it's just for the mowing attachment.
Thank you for watching,
Stihl dealer also instructed me to remove the black portion of guard if using the cutting head.
Nice thanks I was not provide that pinaybe I can use a mail and I think I had that last 2nd. To last piece backwards 👍

I was gonna tell him that, i figured i would scroll down to see if anyone had already said it though, you beat me
We all had to start somewhere, these videos are hit & miss. Those blades are all I use for head high grass & underbrush fs80 & fs130
What's the point of using a period at the very end of your comment when you didn't use one for the rest of the comment?
@@HabeasJ Awesome positive comment😂. Are you still able to read it?
I use this on my 80v. Amazing blade but wish it cane in a larger size
Thank you for your help 🙂
Does the star locking washer come in the Kit? I bought the blade and it just comes with the hub & Nut.
How do you sharpen edges please 🙏
Ours did not come with the special tool provided, what exactly is it and can it be purchased alone?
What size is that Allen wrench that came with it ?

imo he put that first washer on upside down. I have no issue with vibration with my Stihl FS 56 + this blade. It was hell with trimmer line.
Nice upgrade
Good job
Why did you flip the blade tho?
great vid thanks
Thank you
It is pretty vicious and serious looking!

Nice video! Thank you for your nice comment on my video ♥
I like that on cutting strong brush like oak sprigs. a string line just don't do it. thanks
Thanks
Did you get the kit from a stihl dealer
I bought the blade, didn’t know if need the bigger guard and stuff, where did you get that at and how much is it?
Ace Hardware, not sure of price. It has been a while.
The guard comes in a kit, and can be purchased at a Stihl Dealer.
That blade looked like a ninja throwing star.
Thank You!
Probably could be used as that, lol
what's the socket size on the nut?
If there a brush cutter attachment that works with curved shaft trimmers? Anyone have a link to one?
Can i put this one on a fs 56?
And I can put this on a stihl fs-550?
Does this work on the FS 40 model
Good info.
Thank you
I got it thanks
thank u
I got a cheap ass weed eater from walmart, would a blade like this be compatable?
That helped! Thanks
Thank you for watching.
Is it supposed to vibrate a lot
What do you think?
I ordered the blade but didn't know about the cap and bolt you have to have to install it. Now I have to wait til I get it. 😢
Why would my 3 knife blade vibrate the whole trimmer?

Common sense…that’s what you’re missing.
Can you tighten the nut too much? Tia
Just a small point here... you dont have to take apart the string head like that to remove it... in fact it's simpler if you don't. Just sayin'..
Thank you
What model is the stihl? Ty
Model FS130R
@@TheLightHouseLady TY
It works better without the guard with the brush knife
How much
But why does my stihl have an extra thing like a big watcher?
dealer didn't sell the new sheild only the blade
Hello! Does it cut blackberry easy? Thank you.
Nick А yep! Just make sure your weed wacker is powerful enough, it works fine on my fs90
Oh yeah I have a S 270 Shindiawa and this blade and the Shindiawa saw blade...you can do it all
God knows...you help me out
Guys he flipped the blade @3:51
Why would you take the trimmer head apart? All I do is turn the whole works off, intact. No reason at all to take it apart.

ANYONE ELSE WATCHING THIS IN 2018!?!?!?!?
Thank you
Yes, in October 2018 - need put a blade on my 4 stroke Stihl/Honda strimmer
Why would that matter?
And there are 4 videos blocking everything you are doing at the key time you are trying it out. Time to look for another video showing me the test.
No need to disassemble head. Also wear gloves. Also mention which way cup on washer goes. Rate. 4 outa 10

you got old man hands just like me. Sucks dosen't it. Good video though.

If you want to save yourself about 50 bucks just by the nut protector and the blade itself don't buy the whole kit.
Great tip
