  • Deer Haven is a spectacular primitive campground in the badlands national park in South Dakota. It makes for a great hiking/ backpacking trip in the heart of the wilderness of badlands south dakota.

    Loved this video! I am planning a trip for the next few weeks and also going to stay in the backcountry. I was planning this hike. Is there anything you would plan differently for the trip? Also did you see any snakes while you were there? I'm not a fan. I realize they are there, but interested to know how prevalent. Thanks!

      LauraOnTheMove thank you for watching! Two things I would do differently are packing an insect repellant, hike in long sleeves and take snake gaiters. I rarely hike in sleeveless shirts but when I did the bugs killed me. We haven’t seen any snakes but they are there. Wear snake gaiters for safety and take your trekking poles. I used the trekking poles to check the grass in front of me. Here is an article I wrote with more details: trekkingpals.com/index.php/2020/07/09/backpacking-to-deer-haven-badlands-national-park/

    This reminds me of a larger version of the Tecopa Trail in California, just outside Death Valley. EPIC views!

    I was just here! July 4th of 2021. Fantastic area to camp. It was a great area to explore further up the trail as well.

    This is a little late, but I’m planning a trip out there soon! What did you do water wise? I’m looking to spend 2-3 nights, 2 people. So will obviously need to bring enough for cooking, drinking but not sure what a good amount would be?

    • @TrekkingPals
      @TrekkingPals  3 роки тому

      We spent one night and we hiked about 5 miles. There was no water source on the way. If you’re spending 3 nights, you need to account for meals and for drinking while hiking. You should also pack some extra water in case you lose the trail or get lost. It depends on your water consumption too and how hot 🥵 it is outside. I can’t give you an exact number. Enjoy the badlands.

    Anyone know the water situation in Badlands? NPS says you have to carry your own water because filtering is not an option due to limited streams and high sediment loads

    • @TrekkingPals
      @TrekkingPals  3 роки тому +1

      crosshairs3 That is correct, when we did this backpacking trip, there was no water source on the trail. You have to pack your own water and account for water for cooking too. Also, keep some water in your car when you finish. We were beat up by the heat and we were glad we had water in the car. Enjoy your trip

    Are you allowed to camp anywhere in the badlands? Or do you need a permit?

    • @TrekkingPals
      @TrekkingPals  Рік тому +1

      We didn’t need a permit! It doesn’t seem like it. Just the pass to enter the National Park.

    • @TrekkingPals
      @TrekkingPals  3 роки тому

      There was no water on this trail when we hiked there. You pack your own water
