      Congrats! Love the channel btw! Personally I think its one of the best out here currently in the UA-cam Gun Community.
      While I'm here I'd like to point out something you mention in the video. You make the claim that the Underwood 115gr XP is not exactly +P performance. However I think you forgot to figure in that copper is a lighter material. Therefore it occupies more of the case's space for the bullet to be of the same weight as a standard lead core bullet. And to achieve the velocities it is. +P pressures are required. Also +P does not always mean higher velocity. While many automatically assume that and often that is the case. It is not a guarantee. +P simply means higher than standard SAAMI pressures specs. Whether its 2% higher or 10.
      Again congratulations. I look forward to more videos from you.

    The 'Xtreme' designation for this ammo applies more accurately to the barrier-blindness of the projectile. Hornady, Sig Sauer and other JHP rounds won't maintain the target effectivness of the Underwood (or Lehigh) when that taget is behind a barrier, like auto glass, auto doors, ply wood and dry wall.

    • @jimlacefield7176
      @jimlacefield7176 6 років тому +28

      I purchase ammo to stop a threat in a self defense situation. If I'm firing on someone that is behind plywood or doors I'm doing it wrong.

      Jim Lacefield i don't know about you, but the homes I've lived in have all had doors, walls and plywood. And I've never been carjacked, but the cars ive been in all have doors and windshields.
      The four barriers I listed are only mediums that I have seen tests of here on yt. Against all of those barriers, the lehigh/underwood XP/XD projectiles had best results for maintaining trajectory, barrier penetration and effectiveness within the intended target once the barriers had been overcome.

      Cory Brown It's really great ammo, that puts the .380 into the range of viable carry options.
      But it is also expensive. However, barrier blindness is an advantage I'm more than willing to afford myself for home defense.

    Paul - Lehigh Defense (the manufacturer of the bullet) says they designed the Penetrator to overcome initial barriers (e.g. car windows) without tumbling while still tearing up the soft target with propeller cavitation. I don't think they want it to tear up innocent bystanders. I'd sure like to see a meat target tested behind some typical barriers.

    Paul, I tested the 65 grain "extreme defender" .380 version of this ammo along with the 90 grain "extreme penetrator" stuff that you tested using my own version (copy?) of your meat target. I saw pretty much what you did with the 90 grain xp stuff, but I saw a lot more damage to the "soft tissue" with the 65 grain xd ammo. Unfortunately winter set in here in Ohio before I could repeat my test to verify that but considering the poor expansion of hollow points in a 380 I switched to the underwood 65 grain extreme defender for my own carry ammo (in an LCP). They SEEM better than hollow points in 380. One thing I also saw was that in the hard ribs, the holes it made were just like FMJ, the real difference was in the sim. lung tissue. I am going to try it again in the spring. Maybe with my own hand loads??

      It doesn't matter. FMJ in 380 works about as good as the best HP +P. Just hit your target center mass once. Each bullet has about a 30-40% chance to stop the worst charging rhino, and generally 1 hit will deter anyone but a pissed off ex-spouse , drug crazed pyscopath .or Jason or Micheal Myers. those might need 2-3.

    I was curious to hear your take on this ammo. I have to appreciate the fact that some creative engineer is finally trying to convert the kinetic energy which had hitherto been invested in spin solely for stability into the cavitation now being caused by those spinning fins. Great example of the results of someone thinking "outside the box".

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 5 років тому

      I don't think it's the spin energy, I think the scoops out the front and the flat nose give it higher drag than a round nose, so it dumps its forward energy quicker than ball. Higher drag is why expanded hollow-points dump their energy quicker too, it's just a way to get the higher drag without expanding.

    • @wes326
      @wes326 Рік тому

      If the bullet has a 1:10 twist rate then it might spin once or a little more in a human sized target between entrance and exit. I don't think that is enough to do much. But I could be wrong.

    To my understanding the Xtreme Penetrator wasnt exactly designed to get more penetration than typical FMJ, but rather give you similar depth of penetration but a more consistent wound cavity. FMJ has a tendency to be real shallow after a certain point and not exactly very consistent. That being said, the make the Xtreme Defender which is pretty much the same type of round but with larger broader flutes in the bullet to deliver even larger cavities while keeping good penetration.
    I've found this ammo in small calibers like .380, .32 ACP, and so on.. it works wonderfully. But in the larger calibers it's simply not that impressive. I've seen them in .45-70, and frankly I dont see a point. When it comes to hunting, there's far more effective rounds for the task. But even if you pressed it into self defense, still far more effective projectiles. I've seen plenty of people buy this stuff to take hunting because they're expecting miracle results using something like the 9mm Xtreme Penetrator on hogs and complaining it wont go shoulder to shoulder. Knowing full well FMJ likely wouldnt either and if it did it wouldnt stop the hog dead in it's tracks.
    I guess people really misunderstand what this round is meant to do... it doesnt help that flashy advertisement saying "Xtreme Penetrator" sticks out in your faces making you believe it's going to get some crazy high level of penetration. But like I said, I think it was designed to get JHP levels of consistent wound cavities with FMJ level penetration, which I recall hearing that in an interview some guys from Lehigh Defense. And if I find the video I will link it for those to see. But honestly, that's what this round does.. FMJ levels of penetration with a more consistent wound channel. Great for small calibers like .32 ACP, .32 S&W Long/Short, not too bad for a .32 H&R Magnum either but plenty of other good rounds available. Same with .38 Special, not too bad for snub nose guns, but with a longer barrel there's better options.

    • @lonewanderer3603
      @lonewanderer3603 6 років тому

      Christopher I don't think they make this in 32. They have an Extreme Cavitator, which is basically a #2 square drive instead of a Phillips screwdriver bit.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 6 років тому

      +Lonewanderer360 The Xtreme Cavitator is essentially at it's core the same design and all testing of my own and from others show it's performance is the same as the Xtreme Penetrator. I believe they had to change the shape and design when going with a .32 caliber round as there were complications with the normal design.

    • @sproutpits
      @sproutpits 6 років тому +1

      I've also seen evidence that it does a much better job of being effective after penetrating a windshield, drywall or plywood, which might be another reason for the moniker. Where hollowpoints expand early and/or clog with debris, the xtreme penetrator retains its shape all the way to the target.

      +sproutpits Well as I mentioned in my first post from what I understand as mentioned it was designed to penetrate like FMJ. I dont know if it does a better job than FMJ for windshields, drywall, or plywood and the likes in terms of penetration, bullet deviation, kinetic energy dump, etc. But I do know it will be more effective than an FMJ if it should hit the target on the other side. The XP's almost remind me of wad cutter bullets only they dont seem to keyhole or tumble inside gel and other mediums.

I'll admit I've been guilty of using 9mm bullets as ear protection once in the past, and it certainly creeped me out, but this dude was attempting to retrieve a freaking rimfire cartridge, by grabbing a hold of the rim with a pair of pliers. Some of the most unbelievable shit I've seen.... maybe ever.

    Yea, it's weird that the "Extreme Penetrator" round penetrates... I remember TNoutdoors9 freaking out when he couldn't get one to stop in something like 32" of gel. I WOULD, however, like to see a test of the Extreme Defender against the meat target in .380 and 9mm. I'd be willing to purchase the ammo in the name of science.

  • @Jesses001
    @Jesses001 6 років тому +86

    That 9mm round gets 150% penetration compared to a standard FMJ in gel. This test shows that gel has limitations when it comes to a test medium.

    • @Jesses001
      @Jesses001 6 років тому +2

      I would not had remembered you if you had not used that nick name, haha. Yes, all tests have their limitations, and we can not exactly get living humans to test on, so we do with what we got.

    • @Jesses001
      @Jesses001 6 років тому +6

      Gel tests are suppose to simulate the effects of flesh on projectiles. In gel tests, these rounds penetrate much further, but a more realistic target they do not, indicating that the gel tests are not representative of what they are attempting to showcase. Now this does not mean the gel tests are useless, but it shows the limitations of what a gel test can show us.

    • @steviesevieria1868
      @steviesevieria1868 6 років тому +5

      Jesse Sisolack I would say the meat target has limitations as well, such as inconsistent size, sometimes appearing maybe a 90% scale to an adult human, also lack of fat, which some human targets would have plenty of... However ballistic gel and the meat targets both give a certain amount of information that can be useful. The takeaway from this is you will do just as well with Remington (or other low cost) hollow points than the expensive Underwood Ammo in your 9mm.

    This maybe a year to late but I think there has been a mix up. There is a difference between the extreme defense and the extreme penetrators.The fluting of the bullet is thinner with a larger cavity on the penetrators were as the defense is much thicker and shallower much like what is shown in the video and those are designed to not over penetrate. They are fluid displacement rounds, they work off the spin of the bullet and using the fluting to create a larger wound cavity. I could go on explaining but these are very cool rounds to research. Paul your you tube channel is one of the best if you're looking for knowledge or insight on firearms. Thank you for all the great videos.

    My cousin just bought a Sig P365 in 9x19mm, probably due to current events in her big city. Now's not the time to learn, but it's better than nothing. Ammo isn't very available, but she got Buffalo Bore +P HC FN lead for bears and moose like I recommended. The only other available ammo was Xtreme penetrator. I used this vid to show why she should get HP ASAP lol
    Also the one about barrier penetration, a big concern in a crowded city for an office worker. You video about the Sig P365 was a big factor in convincing her to get that specific pistol many months ago (after I took her to every gun shop in the city to physically try every pistol under the sun lol), once the reliability problems had been worked out with the first releases and it was available with a thumb safety (the main reason she didn't go for the Glock 26, despite immediately loving it!). Thanks for putting this information out for free to The People. I've used it to make myself and several interested people around me better prepared and safer

    Most people can't shoot very well to begin with, so there is just as much danger to bystanders that someone will miss the intended target as overpenetration. The advantage of this ammo really comes in if there are barriers involved. As always know what's behind your target. Great video! I very rarely carry a Ruger LCP .380 but when I do it's with this ammo.

    Your results sound consistent with the products documentation. It's been said "penetrates like fmj, cavitates like a hollow point". Your results confirm this.
    The x-treme penetrator isn't the ultimate penetrator type bullet. Usually that goes to hard cast for a lot of people, but it deforms less than hard cast at higher speeds but still goes deeper than an HP. That's the point if the design.
    A lot of people poopoo that it does damage other than ice-picking at all, abd the ads just show it's a truck bullet in gel, but useless on real meat and bone targets.

What he is saying in that video he did not do as well in his accuracy, but it was how it fit his individual hand, not the firearm's fault. I notice he does not blame the ammo or firearm for his misses. He says, "...but this one has a flier, but that was just me..."

    Not sure how I missed this vid. I had been doing research a while back on underwood in 380. am actually relieved that the 380 doesn't over penetrate too much. The gel tests that I had seen on this ammo often left me concerned about using this ammo for defense. I was sold on the idea that it performs similar to a hollow point without having to expand. 380 hollow points can be iffy, depending on what you run it through. I like the idea of creating a good sized wound cavity while still maintaining enough penetration to neutralize the intended target. I will continue to use this in 380. I don't often carry 380. I typically use 9mm luger for carry. But I do have 380 for backup. Thank you for the info. You never fail to give good insight.

Something like an Xtreme Defender or Xtreme Penetrator that doesn't have to expand is probably the way to go for self defense in small calibers.

    Sig P238 with the Xtreme Penetrators is my lightweight backup to main rifle in the forest (BearSpray canister as 3rd backup). 16oz to carry loaded, versus 34+oz for my Ruger Security Six .357 Mag. Since I'm BackPack hunting, that small sidearm helps shave the oz's and is easy to wield in a 1-man tent. And easy to grab for when you need to take a piss in the middle of the night. And having a 2nd mag along gets me up to 6 + 7 + 1 for a total of 14 shots for hardly much extra weight. And the little P238 is crazy accurate for such a small gun, and has nice big chunky night sights on it, such that I can even manage to aim it without my glasses on, if I had to.

    Very interesting results. It's worth noting that this ammo is EXPENSIVE! I got some 140gr in .357 Magnum to try out (still haven't shot it yet as I have no place to setup a meat target). The intended pistol is the S&W 649 with 2 1/8th inch barrel. I would be very interested in seeing a followup video with that stuff. Your Ruger snubbie would be close enough. If you need a box sent, let me know how to arrange that.
    The operational theory behind the ammunition is that the flutes cut into the solid copper projectile create the cavitation that a hollow point bullet would. Works great on gel from the videos I've seen. Very consistent too. It is also good with barriers. This is the first time I've seen any version of the Underwood tested on a meat target. Kudos for that.

    Good video, that out of the way, the LEHIGH Extreme Penetrator (in 9mm) is not meant for personnel protection, that is by LEHIGH themselves. In 9mm, Extreme Defender is the load developed by LEHIGH for personnel protection. However, in the weaker .380cal, the Extreme Penetrator is a very good performer. Both of these loads are in fact BARRIER BLIND, meaning they are not affected as a HP would be. Underwood uses the Lehigh bullet, but adds more charge and a nickel caseing. Lehigh has thier own video out that explains all of the above.

Lehigh Defense also makes a similar, lighter weight Machined Solid Copper projectile with much deeper flutes called an Xtreme Defender that is intended for cartridges that a person will employ for personal defense. The XD projectiles create a greater permanent wound cavity than the XPs and they do not penetrate as deeply. Hopefully a thoughtful and generous viewer will send you some of Underwood Ammo's version of those in .380+P and 9x19+P to test.

    I think they named it the Extreme Penetrator due to the fact that it peforms great through hard barriers like car doors and windshields. It is designed to dump it's energy in soft tissue.
    Semper Fi, love your videos.

    ... So, its good for pocket pistols in minor calibers. Good to know. ..

      Gloomshadow100 I currently rotate Buffalo Bore's hot all copper HP with hot hard cast in my LCP2 but I'm thinking no need to rotate for expansion/pentration - So for 380, anyway, this looks to be the ammo that closes the gap between the underpowered 380 and the 9. Penetration plus energy dump. Carry the pocket gun with conidence with Underwood!

      Brad Erickson ..yeah, penetration, good wound channel and armor penetration all in one round that does not need to expand... if it feeds, not a bad deal.

      I just ordered two boxes. Need to make sure it feeds (from what I hear in the forums, the LCP2 eats it like candy) and where it prints. Then will box up up all the Buffalo Bore and Critical Defense and save it for the apocalypse. Haha.
      I believe that this round gives me the confidence to carry 380 instead of the larger pocket 9s. I have some Glock 40/357 Sigs to carry when I'm going places where an actual threat could possibly exist. It's nice to keep the Glock 27 at home in the case and EDC such a tiny gun that I forget is there, that I can shoot just as well as the 27 but finally not feel underpowered, thanks to Underwood! And thanks to the meat target (s)!

      Brad Erickson ..sounds like a good load to me...the whole idea of a .380 round that does damage similar to a,hollowpoint but doesn't need to expand is a huge deal for .380... bc i just dont trust any .380 or 32 25 22 anything to expand reliably out of a pistol bbl , just not enough energy andmthe hole in nose is,just too small and easy to plug up.. damage without expansion in 380 is a huge deal.

      Gloomshadow... You are exactly right. I load BB all copper very hot HPs because I believe through my personal testing, that they will expand better than conventional lead HPs and still give penetration and dumping their energy throughout the deep wound channel. But I'm clearly not convinced in their capabilities in 380 because I rotate Buffalo Bore +P hot hard cast rounds that will go through two meat targets, dumping minimal energy and, like you said, only making a small hole but my hope is that I can put the hole in the boiler room or a head shot. How great is it to have observed what Underwood was able to do to the meat target: it is the very best testing for live targets that I've ever seen in my life.
      Like I said, I'm switching over knowing that my little pocket gun is now more than capable of eliminating any kind of typical threat. I always kind of felt the need to research the micro 9s but I truly love the tiny profile of the LCP2, not to mention, the trigger is so good (and I have small hands so the grip fits great) that I am more accurate with it than I am with my G27 and new G43 which I think I'll sell. Thank you Underwood!
      To all the "380 underpowered" crowd, which included me until recently, this video is a must see and I'll be directing the people I know to it.

    I gonna start by saying that I'm always impressed with your videos. The standard test you did is not where these fluted bullets shine. Their special talent is that they don't slow down significantly thru dry barriers. If you are really curious, make the same test with your now famous "meat target" and set a metal sheet, plywood and Sheetrock in front of it.YES. ALL OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME. THEN you will be impressed with the small difference in penetration between the two tests. Actually, the metal sheet will be welded to the tip of the bullet when you dig it out. Cheers.

    Paul can you do a video of 9x18 Makarov ammunition for concealed carry? I'm not sure if you own a gun chambered in that but it would be a good video

      I own a pa-63 and there are Hornady JHP with the red plastic tips. It was the only defensive round I could find at the shops in my town. I don't carry it concealed due to the right hand safety being hard to switch to fire and the right hand grips with thumb rest (I'm a lefty). The round is between 380 and 9mm.

    Underwood's Xtreme Penetrator is designed to punch through barriers that would normally stop, slow down, plug or deform traditional expanding hollow points, while still delivering impressive cavitation damage on soft tissue. If Paul repeats the test with various hard barriers in front of his soft tissue targets, he will likely see the advantages of using the Underwood Xtreme Penetrators or the Underwood Xtreme Defenders.
