I was taught, back in the Dark Ages, that the term actually is "chaise longue" from the French, literally meaning "long chair".
Correct. The change from “longue” (very hard for English speakers to pronounce) to “lounge” is an example of what is called “folk etymology” in linguistics.

There is one piece that I love and you have mentioned before - the armoire (wardrobe). I have one in my kitchen fitted out with shelves for pots/pans, one in my hallway used as a linen closet, and another converted into a bar. While mine are from the 1800s, there are some good quality "entertainment centers" that can be picked up dirt-cheap.
Love a bergère chair. I have one by Pierre-Antoine Bellange, made in about 1815 in French Empire style. It's very formal but it works in my 1830s house. Never fear - there is also newer stuff - I don't want to live in a museum.

Love armoires! I couldn't find a place in a bedroom for mine, so I had it fitted with shelves. It houses my china in my dining room and looks fabulous!
Love my antique standing mirror. Every time I want to reclaim the corner it sits in for something else I recall I use it daily. It's not leaving.

My house was built in 1991. We have 9' ceilings. The builder/owner loved dental moldings. Bedroom tray ceiling and crown identical design in the diningroom and full livingroom and fireplace. Outside of the house has dental moldings around the eaves. That detail was part of the home's charm.
I think dark wood floors are luxurious and glamorous, but it does show dust and pet fur. Make sure you have an elegant, classy dark companion animal to go with your dark wood floor.
All surfaces will show dust and hair. I had dark hardwood floors in our last home and there was no problem as everything is always kept clean. I say have the floors you love, and just keep things maintained.
Interestingly enough, I had no idea any of these were dated. I assumed they're either coming back into style or timeless, most for the aesthetic, and the modular sofa for function. All of these would be bought very quickly where I live. Maybe it's a regional thing? Either way, I would absolutely love any of these peices.
On the topic of inlays in wood furniture, one of the prettiest inlays I've seen is mother-of-pearl. It's absolutely beautiful when set into wood. My sister's in-laws have an entire living room set with mother-of-pearl inlays on carved wood. It has to be some of the most beautiful furniture I've ever seen.

I will be keeping my bergere chairs until I’m gone. The carved wood detail and the subtle tapestry fabric make my living room. Also, a huge fan of both marquetry and parquetry.

I love your approach to design 💕it’s very chic however you advise is very much practical and conscious to the impact to the environment, I don’t like those quick make over where people throw things / furniture and get something that is not great quality so it won’t last the test of time. I see China closets and/or hutches in thrift stores for a song. I wish I could buy ten for when they become popular again. Personally I love mine and need the storage.

Yes, you can't give those away right now. No one even wants them as a donation (e.g., Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, etc.) Some charities have their websites noted: "Not accepting china cabinets."
@@wisteria808 There is a market for fine furniture. I waited quite a while to get my Baker breakfront, and I don’t brag but let’s say it wasn’t inexpensive by any means.
@@GarrettLeChic - Agreed. Pieces from manufacturers like Baker, Henkel Harris, Henredon, and Stickley, appeal to a small, upscale market. I was referring to the "general trend" away from formal dining rooms and china cabinets. On a personal level, I love a beautiful, formal dining room; but I don't find that to be the trend.
@@wisteria808 Oh yes I know you understand that. I just want people to think about ignoring trends and just have what makes them happy. Trend driven design is a losing proposition. The wealthiest people I know don’t follow trends so it pains me when people say things like I’m holding onto this because such and such will be back in favor someday. I just want people to know that not all interior designers are trend driven and if it never comes back into favor that’s totally fine if you like it.

Definitely keeping our modular sofa, because we don’t have a lot of space and when Christmas comes around we can move things and break it apart to make room for our tree! And as for the Cheval mirror, my grandmother has an antique one at the end of a hallway that gives me the creeps and I can never look straight into it because I have a crazy imagination 👻 . 😂😂

My whole life (ok the 20 years I've had them),, I never knew what my beloved chairs with the cane sides were called. Now I do! A suggestion for the future - could you give us an analysis of. The really crazy historical styles of the last 50 years? I am old enough to remember with awe the sunken seating areas - and sunken baths - of the 70’s. And how about crazy circular beds? Carpeting on walls? Glass floors, mirror ceilings, flock wallpaper, inflatable seating? I bet you would be hilarious talking us through the madness!

Hi Garrett! So funny…we have a Buy Nothing group in our area and I saw a cherry wood Cheval (sp?) mirror! I had just watched this video. The person’s mother was moving and they didn’t want it so I’m the lucky new owner!

I stumbled upon my mahogany cheval mirror in an anitques store several years ago and immediatley called my husband to bring the truck. The label on the back reads" Geo. C. Flint Co. West 23rd. St. NY. I know that the factory was there from 1893 to WWI. It lives in my bedroom with my mahogany canopy bed (Leonard's) and inlaid dressers. I will never part with any of these!

I love a Cheval mirror. Sadly, I've never had one and don't see that happening soon...we have a fun loving German Shepherd with a tail that could knock a person out if they aren't aware. I'd be worried wherever I would put it, that I wouldn't be able to have it where she wouldn't be able to accidentally bump it. Maybe some day, though! I'd have to move into a bigger home, though! Such a lovely video, Garrett, thank you. I find marquetry fascinating. For extra storage in our bedroom, in a sliver of space, I found a delicate Belle Epoque ecritoire covered on three sides in beautiful marquetry of flowers and vines. The drop-down has its original tooled leather, and the top is a most unusual red marble unavailable today. The legs are covered in gilt scrolling. Its little drawers hold my odds and ends, while the cupboard beneath is a repository for whatever I want close by. I’m probably not doing the piece justice by using it as a catch-all, but it is a work of art, and the fact that it isn’t actually being used will, I hope, preserve it. It’s all part of my moving away from matching casegoods in the bedroom, one of your excellent suggestions. Thanks again❤️

I have the cheval mirror, as one of the window corner in the guest bedroom was empty and I got it from an antique store, it catches all the greenery in that mirror, and looks a mirror full of life now:)
The nesting table was almost a last addition to the house here, and as you rightly said, used the couple of them for my corner reading nook and one of them in the office room here. So yes they are versatile and if you get them in glass they just make the space look more roomier:)

Keep anything that brings you joy, pack away items which you have loved but for now, have become tired of. Shop in your own home "packed away" boxes or basement temporary furniture warehouse.
Styles come and go, but items that bring and hold memories are priceless.
What Garrett does well and brilliantly is guiding people back into tradition as he embraces timeless pieces which HGTV said were out of style only now once tossed away can never affordably be replaced.

I really don’t know. I’d suggest you contact a qualified and experienced antique and furniture appraiser.
This video makes me think of all the Chippendale and Hepplewhite furniture that got thrown out or shunted off to servants quarters or basements when they went out of style, only to make fortunes for some lucky dumpster divers a couple of hundred years on!

If you have looked long and hard it might be a good idea to enlist the help of a local qualified interior designer that can come to your home and make some suggestions and help source it or perhaps consider custom.

I love old furniture as long as they aren’t painted. They seem to be higher quality and are built with solid wood. I hired a painter years ago. I have a ranch house now and wanted white ceilings. The painter said walls and ceilings were now painted the same color. A white ceiling with walls in pastel colors makes the height of the ceiling seem taller. Walls and ceilings in the same color makes a lower ceiling ranch house room look like a cave.
Sometimes they are painted the same! Every situation is different depending on the design effect sought.
