One thing that I would really love to go away is this trend (that has been happening for a while) of using books merely for decor -- especially if they have stuff on top of them. I'm not taking all that stuff from there just to open a coffee table book! Also, what if water from vases seep into books?

Yes! Nothing wrong with a pretty stack of books on the coffee or end table. But they should be accessible and something you as the homeowner actually enjoy and read! I keep my pretty houseplant books and a art book out in a pretty stack because I use them a lot.

So unpopular opinion - but I like a well done accent wall. Sometimes I think they look really good, and can add to the space. All white walls can get boring. Same with all green walls, or all blue walls. Painting your room black can get too dark, but sometimes painting just a piece of the room works.

An accent wall uses contrast to solve a design problem. UA-cam decorators give a lot of bad advice and Nick is no acceptation to that rule. He tells his audience they don't "need" an accent wall and he has never seen their space. He doesn't know. Also like most decorators of no particular fame or fortune, he is a one trick pony. He can give you his look and nothing else. So you had better like his apartment a lot. I don't. There is nothing special about it.

I don’t think accent walls are bad-I think they’re great when done well. I’m a big fan of color and texture in a space. I think they can add dimensionality into a room, and there are so many ways to make accent walls, from very expensive to very affordable. I think the problem with accent walls when everyone chooses to do the exact same thing as everyone else.

Color and texture is great! Only committing to one wall makes it very jarring and unbalanced, heavy on one side. If you're gonna Limewash, or wainscot, or paint, do it for all the walls!

I will defend my accent wall to the death! I have an open concept living/dining room that's one long rectangle. One end of the rectangle is essentially dead space due to the placement of the entrance to the kitchen. I can only put storage pieces there. Painting the wall a darker color visually foreshortens the room and helps integrate the dead space with the rest of the room.

@@12345678abracadabra Not everyone owns, and it's easier to put back a rented space as it was if you just did one wall. It *can* make a space look unbalanced, but I don't agree it *necessarily* does so.

I have an unintentional accent wall in one bedroom. I repainted and barely had enough paint to do 3 walls in the room, so I left the darker color on the window wall alone. I was trying to refresh the room without spending money, using paints I already had.
I'm wondering if I just painted the "accent wall" a lighter color, so it wouldn't be such a big contrast, maybe that would make it look better.

Totally and you should decorate how you want to decorate. If you are a person who wants to change to follow every trend and have your home look like every influencer home on here, go for it. If you dont care about "dated" or "trends" and love your fuschia accent wall, keep it! Your home should be filled with things you love, not what other people love or tell you that you should love or hate.

well, I still think z little nook in the wall, which you can also use to put you soap etc on would be the enter option for me than a (wooden) stool, that won't do well with the water...

    • @koalaeucalyptus
      @koalaeucalyptus 9 місяців тому +7

@@lithopheliax61x5 While I agree that wood is not the best material of choice (I'd go for a sturdy plastic that's actually feasible to clean), a mere nook on the wall doesn't cut it for shaving legs. The height is usually wrong, you'd have other objects in there, and it eliminates the possibility of seating (which some people might need for a number of reasons). If the stool is not an option and the person owns and wants to renovate, I'd suggest a built-in seat on one side of the shower box, for example

Having a shower stool when you don't have a ledge for your tub (I think those freestanding tubs are really silly and a trend that will die) is actually handy. I also think paying $150 for a nice teak stool when you don't have a built in bench for your shower (and most showers really shouldn't have them because they take up a lot of space, drive up the cost of construction and allow water to pool) is handy for shaving legs or for keeping some of your products on there.

    • @thornyback
      @thornyback 9 місяців тому +50

I couldn't agree more. The freestanding tubs next to a wall are the biggest dirt-trap I've seen in my life and to top it off there is no place to put your stuff like towel, glass of wine, book, soap etc. They look very pretty but they are about as impractical as tubs come. Give me a beautiful built-in with a shelf and minimal cleaning.

After having major abdominal surgery this past spring (I'm recovering well, thank you), I needed a shower stool in order to wash myself. I bought a very basic medical stool, not at all attractive but sturdy, waterproof and cheap.
Turns out, I love having it, even though I no longer need it.
Sitting while shaving legs is wonderful. I can put it next to the tub to hold a few things when I take a bath. If I'm tired, I can use it for a night time shower.
Saying that, not just any stool will work. It needs to be 100% waterproof, have non-slip feet, and not give you splinters if you sit on it. Wood, even teak, won't stand up well to constant wetting and drying out - it will look bad (and raise splinters) well before it fails completely. My humble medical stool won't do any of these.

The only one I somewhat disagree with is the accent wall. Obviously, it looks tacky if it's some cheesy color like fuchsia or lime green, but I think if you choose a beautiful sophisticated shade that works with your overall color scheme, it can visually pull things together and look quite good. I'm thinking of doing a very small accent wall for this very reason.

These days it is helpful for my husband who is having some foot pain. I looked into those teak benches and felt that was just too much and I didn't need something else to keep clean.

I like an accent wall- especially a terra cotta wall to relieve and give a boost to the boring beige rest of the room. I liked it in the sixties and the eighties and the 2020s. An accent wall gives a bit of boost to an otherwise bland room. Really- most rooms in most houses are boring bland with too much safe beige (I love beige).

I have an accent wall in my living room, i live in an open mcm home, and it's hard to know where to start and stop with paint when you want to one room to have a different wall color. I think some style homes can handle an accent wall. MCM design often features an accent wall. Totally agree with the aggressive wall moldings though.

ok yes, an accent wall isnt totally necessary. no visual design element is necessary. but accent walls arent bad. you have one behind you, as well. sometimes having the whole room one color can feel overwhelming or boring depending on the color. maybe someone doesnt want every wall burnt cienna but they still want to add some warmth. its a nice way to create dimension or texture to an otherwise flat surface. with any trend, dont feel like you need to hop on the train. do things because you think it works for you and its what you like

I agree, agree, agree with you on this. When I look at someon'es design in a room I think 1) is it really functional 2) how difficult is it to clean and maintain. All the vignettes (stools w/stuff on them in the bathrooms, cutesies on shelves especially in the bath & kitchen, around the sink getting water splashes, and stuff next to the cooktops getting greasy & dusty) I see require so much dusting and cleaning that the cuteness just isn't enough. And they ARE cute! 1 & 2 eliminate about 90% of what I see designers doing. I do love the look of the wood piece accent walls, but I would paint them the same color as the room (the texture is enough) and be aware that any line that is not vertical will be a dust collecter. That is A LOT of dusting to be done! I guess you can tell I don't have a maid LOL! Thanks again for your video, Nick!

I'm gonna come out in defense of accent walls in specific situations, as long as they're not random. Let's say you live in the subtropics (like me) and apartments are...maybe not what Americans are used to, and despite your best efforts one might get 'wall cancer' (when the paint bubbles and flakes due to humidity, especially if you are trying to be environmentally friendly and not using an a/c that much). It's easier to fix up and repaint a white wall, but getting more paint for an accent wall...well, you'd better hope they still make the same color or that you saved the info for that color (in our case, the name was not enough as Nippon Paint had changed all the names!) So you do one wall, because you can maintain that, but not every wall.
Or let's say you rent and you can imagine repainting one wall when you move out but would prefer not to repaint every wall. Not everyone owns, but that doesn't necessarily mean they want all white, if they can get permission to do something to a single wall. The same is true for wallpaper, even peel and stick. If you're renting, it's a lot easier to tear down one wall of peel-n-stick but not a lot of fun to take it down on every wall (and then wash them to remove any lingering adhesive or repaint areas where the adhesive took off paint).
As long as your colored wall is your focal point wall, I really don't see a problem with this. I guess it's dated, but if you like it, who cares?
I don't care for all the weird extra molding though. It looks like more skinny surfaces to have to dust.
I'll also defend stools if they're used for an actual purpose, e.g. next to the bath as a place to put a glass of water or tea, or burn a nice candle, or keep your face mask for when you're ready to put it on. Or if it's in the shower, it can help if you don't have a product shelf -- not everyone has tile that those suction cups will stick to and plastic storage looks cheap -- and some people use them to shave legs. Ever tried shaving your legs in the shower without something to hoist the leg you're working on up? It's a massive pain, especially if you have product in your hair or want to keep your hair dry (not everyone washes hair, or should wash hair, every day -- but leg shaving without a stool or other apparatus is a great way to get wet hair).

You used my fave word…cacophony. Retired teacher here. Spent 30 years using this amazing word! Never thought of it to use it in reference to pillows…😂😂😂

I love that word, too, That is one of the words that sounds exactly like its definition; "mellifluous" being another.

I stir fry often. The grease gets up and falls down. Items exposed gets a greased dust layer eventually. Greased dust is the hardest to clean. I would not use glass lampshade or desk lamp in kitchen.

    1. I keep a fold-out step stool next to the bath. This is really to access the shelves in the airing cupboard next door.
    2. Excess pillows & cushions are excellent ammunition for a spontaneous pillow fight. Just sayin’.
    3. Lamps are not suitable in a kitchen, full stop.
    4. Curved sofa = commercial space, like a hotel lobby.
    5. Accent wall = definitely passé, with the possible exception of providing a background for an artwork as focal point.
    6. Oversized lighting: wtf.

Love your work Nick. As an Australian follower , I spend a lot of time translating in my mind the different terminologies used , it's fun though 😀
Just a few, pillows we sleep on , cushions we decorate with . Counter Tops we call bench tops. Accent wall we call feature wall.
How come we have all come so late to the lamps on kitchen benches ?
I have loved introducing a couple of small lamps in two sections of my country kitchen in Southern Australia , oops I recall you aren't fond of country style 😀 my home is a Federation style set in half acre of native bushland mixed with European plantings, we love it. cheers from a home decor tragic , who loves your humour and your style . ❤

I think this is the first time I disagree with you, Nick. I love accent walls, they are great when painting the whole room in that colour feels too heavy, especially with bold/darker colours. I actually liked almost all of the examples that you showed in the video 😅
And as for stools in the bathroom - if I had space for it in mine, I would buy one to have someplace to put my PJs on while showering 😂 But unfortunately I only have the top of my washing machine for that.

I just always saw the stools as an answer to having no place to put products, a drink, your phone, book, etc within reach of a stand-alone tub. It's like an end table next to the tub. It seems practical.

Sometimes stools are mobility aids. I don't have one because it's pretty, I have it there because it helps me maintain my independence.

I never understood the concept of piling a mass of pillows and throws on the bed, all of which will have to be removed when you go sleep. And put back the next morning. Who even has time for that?

I enjoy your videos. Straight and to the point with very useful analysis. My go-to. Love the editing where you show many examples of what you're referring to.

I don't have a decorative stool, but I do have a metal and decoratuve glass round table next to the bathtub. A small radio is always on top. Below in a plastic basket are my shampoo, body wash, foot pumice stone, etc. The top is a great place to drop my phone and eyeglasses when bathing. I have a small bathroom with almost no counter space and no drawers, so corraling items there is necessary for my time and sanity. Trust me, I would not put an unnecessary piece of furniture in this bathroom!😄
